    30 KB I Was a Teenage Mind Flayer Elder Brain !nd39fJvVDI 02/07/10(Sun)12:04 No.7965941
Twenty years ago, your parent—you had only one—spawned you and some ten thousand siblings, secreting you into a large, wide-lipped vat. There you grew, devouring your siblings, and avoiding being devoured by the Elder Brain whose tank you shared. You grew strong, and soon consumed all of your siblings. The time was ripe, and the Elder Brain let its attendants know that it was time to implant you and begin ceremorphosis. You were transferred to the birthing pods by solemn attendants.

You were denied nutrients for three weeks, the better to spur your hunger. Then, when the pangs grew too painful to bear, two thralls carried in a hooded prisoner, and laid it down, thrashing and screaming, at the lip of the birthing pool. The illithid attending the process lifted up the hood, and with a ravenous hunger, you leapt out of the birthing pool and into the ear of a:

Over the course of several days, your host wails in terror and pain as you feed on her internal organs, replacing them with your own, neuron-dense substance. Your work turns the drow woman’s skin to a dull mauve color, and her skin becomes coated with a protective slime. As the process nears its completion, the drow’s hair falls out, her jaw turns to cartilage, and four prehensile tentacles sprout from her face. You consume the last few delicious morsels of the drow’s brain, and her eyes—now your eyes—turn a glassy, pupil-less white. Your birth is complete, and the Elder Brain calls upon you to report to the workshops for instruction.

Four years pass, and your teachers at the Illithid Sept of Lagurno find you an adequate student. You are trained as a hunter, navigating the depths of the earth in search of your peoples' enemies--especially the gith.

    http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=184000

You are resting in your small, damp quarters in Lagurno’s central plaza, when a command enters your mind. It is sent by an Ulitharid, a taller, stronger, more intelligent mutation among Illithids that invariably rise to supervisory positions.

“%yOu+will COMe at onCe to the ^CApTuRe^pits^, SeleCT a%thrALl, and perforM a%SERvice for ^THE^BRAIN^”

At the capture pits, the Ulitharid who summoned you stands near a large, deep pit, slick with slime and the captives’ droppings. “ChoOSe from%these,” he intones into your mind. You look over the railing and down into the pit, and see five new acquisitions from a recent raid:

A short, bearded food that calls itself a dwarf man.

A scrawny tree vermin food that calls itself an elf woman.

A fat, bearded food that calls itself a human man.

A scarred, tattooed, tusked food that calls itself an orc woman.

A small, beady-eyed food that calls itself a Halfling man.

The orc, already cowed by long weeks in the captive pit, allows the claw to grab her and pull her up without protest. The claw deposits her next to you. Lacking any commands to do otherwise, the thrall lies in a heap on the slick stone floor and stares at the ceiling, moving her jaw up and down soundlessly.

Lets get in some field practice with our psionics.

Try to make the thrall feel safe around you, more relaxed, as if it is obeying some sort of inbuilt command intrinsic to it's system (which is what you are shooting for.) Further, try and warp how it views it's own captivity into something that involves more or the chemicals associated with happy food. If you keep working on this, you could have a pretty good method of ensuring the loyalty of thralls even when pesky adventurers swing on through.

Start making your way to the bazaar, on the way, keep trying to put the thrall's mind together in some way to hopefully return some degree of mental acuity without also returning some of that rebellious attitude that is so distracting.
Keep working on this, if you can get even halfway competent at tweaking the mindset of thralls that they serve willingly and alertly, more so than other thralls, then you could use that as a constant advantage in the machinations of the Illithid. Really, getting good at this will only help you.

There is the extra benefit of getting even better at telepathy as you work on your precision.

Your thrall follows you through the wide, dark tunnels of Lagurno, and you continuously send her feelings of ease and comfort. She begins to carry herself with more certainty and strength.

You reach the bazaar, where a resonance stone in the center of the trade area emanates a feeling of fair dealing and bonds of trust. Around the bazaar, some 30 illithid merchants and their slaves display their wares for barter.

"I am trained in the use of all simple and martial weapons, light armor, medium armor, and shields, master."

There are three merchants trading weapons. One offers a selection of wood-crafted weapons recovered from a raid on a wood elf village two weeks ago, one is trading bone weaponry from a shamanic tribe on an adjoining plane, and one sells arcane-empowered staves made here in Lagurno.

Multi-tasking time, BECAUSE TRAINING NEVER STOPS

    Do the following:

--Continue working on female orc's psyche, become more familiar with your first thrall's strengths/weaknesses (both in combat and out), so that you may more efficiently put your thrall to work. Try to discern what the thrall used to call itself, they usually place much importance in their spoken names, knowing it could prove useful.

--Start telepathically contacting sellers in the area as you identify item types that you or your thrall could use effectively, doing this while still working on the thrall. Splitting attention is good for improving focus and deftness of action.

--Track down contact you were ordered to meet.

Continue working over Orc, you aren't done until you know her inside and out and have tweaked her brain chemistry so that she is tailored specifically to being a loyal, obedient (and much more mentally alert) minion.

Get her a shield, medium armor and whatever weapon she can pick out as being the one she feels most comfortable with. And give her a subtly jolt of happiness every time she either acts in your best interests or otherwise follows your commands, to reinforce the work you are doing.

Also, practice telepathy by scanning her mind for her past, get some basics like her name, if she knows anyone of interest, etc.

You learn that the Orc calls herself Asa. She was once a priestess of her kind, and can call on Gruumsh for aid to a limited degree. She is also trained in martial combat, and has learned to harness her people's bestial wrath against her enemies. She is completely nude and covered filth--her own, and that of her fellow captives.

The merchant selling bonecrafted arms responds to your query: "This one could provision your thrall with the carved femur of a thunder lizard, which the thrall's people are known to use as an effective club. I would ask in return the pledge of your vote for my ascendancy to the judging board for the upcoming Competitive Eating trials."

    arm her with club
armor her with med armor and shield (divine castor + your only bodyguard + racial str bonus = med armor? YESPLS)

while doing this, continue to work on her mind, make her feel comfortable, at home around you, to such a point that she feels at peace and natural whenever she is near you or serving you. This could be aided by adding a lowkey thread of owner-worship into the reprogramming, only enough to make her even more inclined to be assertive about guarding her newly gained life anchor (you)

This hinges upon using the time the illithid we need to speak to being busy with customers to acquire medium armor and a shield for our thrall, to go with the club. Then, after meeting with the contact, we should make time to clean our thrall while getting even more in-depth in our rewriting. Our goal is to return her function to her original capacities, when she was creative, assertive, without bringing back the independance or willfullness that usually goes with it.

Okay cool, double check you have a weapon of your own (might need it, on the off chance things all go to hell), and set out.

On the way out, start working on a disguise principle, while also continuing your work molding Asa into an alert, capable, supremely loyal and protective thrall by tweaking he brain chemistry (can add some tones of owner-worship, so she sees you, at least to some extent, as a being so completely above her [or any other thrall] that it is only right that she serves, maybe start tweaking her memories of life before being captured to look less prefferable, etc)

The disguise should be psionically based. Bascially, you cue the mind of anyone you target with this to, when they see you, process your image as a same gendered, same species individual. Everyone sees their own general racial traits in you, instead of tentacle

"Thank you for choosing me, master. I know now that my path has led me here, to this place, to serve my true purpose in serving you." Now armed and assured, Asa begins to take on a confident gait. She stands close by your side, ready to intercede between you and any enemy that may confront you.

You reach the exit to the Sept of Lagurno's lower levels. In your entire existence, you have never left the damp, dark tunnels of Lagurno. You were told that outside this hatch is a village of Duergar, almost all of whom are enthralled to your people, although you have not seen this yourself.

You craft a devious plan to deceive your foes, using a power you picked up late in your psionic studies

(Acquired the False Sensory Input power).

    >>7967487

By Orc standards, Asa is a little below-average; by human standards, she is a hideous monstrosity. You are a horrific, genderless creature, the mere sight of which is enough to sear madness into the minds of humans.

You adjust the straps on your dampsuit, which maintains the moisture your body needs to survive, and prepare to leave your home.

(I'm taking off for a few hours--I'll be on again in the early evening, Pacific Time. Thanks for the responses, especially from Devious Anon.)

Not too fond of the Illithid names... we can't really remember or pronounce them.

I propose we call ourselves K'tulu. Not exactly an original name, but it's better than an un-pronouncable mixture of letters, numbers, and punctuation characters.

Make Asa take point. If we run into trouble, it's better that our thrall is hurt than us. We can always get a new thrall if she dies.

Speaking of which, send her messages about her role in life; she exists to serve us, and that to die for us would be infinitely preferable than to live for herself. We are her benevolent master. We could have chosen another thrall over her, but we did not.

Disguise ourselves as a minion of Asa.

She'll be doing the speaking, anyway (as we don't want to provoke the impressionable humanoids).

Follow her around, and use our psychic powers to tell her where to go (as we're following her) and what to say.

The plan to use Asa as our 'face while using the disguise to stay hidden sounds good, but consider this:

Historically speaking, there are established appearances for humanoids that seem to be universally approved of (the 'cute' phenomenon, etc.)

And considering Asa's appearance, this could be problematic in certain situations. So, I suggest adding reconstructive surgery/ augmentive magic to change Asa's appearance, into something that is more likely to elicit a favorable response from any wild food.

For now, keep working on her mind, double, triple and quadruple checking all of the changes you have made, make sure they are as well-extablished as you are currently capable of rendering them.

Then, start working on actual improvement. Try using the general processes Illithids use to convert tissue on obtaining a body to improve the mental fortitude and response time of your thrall. After all, if she is to be a 'face', she will need to be at least somewhat personable, or will in certain conversation types. Might as well start preparing her for usefullness there as well.

The Elder Brain is pleased that his thread has been bumped in his absence.
    ---------
You open the hatch that leads up and out of your Sept, and are immediately struck by how incredibly loud the Duergar village above is. Your entire life has been bathed in near-complete silence, but for the screams of food and the gentle gurgling of fountains in the square. Here, in the village above, there is a constant din of verbal speech and physical labor.

The hatch you emerged from is guarded by two illithid, both of whom trained you as a hunter. They acknowledge you. You stand in a cathedral of black marble. Behind you, the guards cover the hatch with a tapestry depicting a dwarven god. Before you are a few rows of stone pews, and a set of double doors leading out of the cathedral and into the Duergar town.

"I will stand before you and defend you, master," mumbles Asa, your Orcish thrall. "What is your bidding?"

You leave the cathedral through a set of large, stone doors. Upper Lagurno appears as a normal duergar village in most respects. Huts of stone with moss roofs crowd the center of town. On the lower side, a collecting pool stores water that drips from overhanging stalactites. Animals are penned or kept in sunken pits. Mushrooms grow abundantly in side caverns.

Your training as a hunter serves you well, and you intuit from the pattern of moss growth on the overhanging stalactites which direction will take you north. You pass by a few duergar huts and approach the north gate, where a pair of duergar in polished plate armor stand guard with glittering halberds. Their armaments do not appear to have ever been used. The guards' eyes are alert and discerning--they are not thralls.

"Oi, ye slimy berk there!" one of them shouts out in Undercommon. "Ye gots permission from the Primarch te take this gate?"

You are to recover the brain of a fallen Illithid patrolman and bring it back to the Elder Brain of your Sept (village) in a specially prepared vessel called a Brain Canister. Upon death, an Illithid's brain is fed to the Elder Brain, where it joins the Elder Brain's immortal superconsciousness. For the brain of a warrior to go to waste is as close to "tragedy" as the Illithid mind can conceive.

You step through the North Gate and into a wide tunnel. A bio-luminescent fungus provides dim lighting in patches. You find the light annoying.

As you walk through the tunnel, you feel the Elder Brain's influence wane with distance. Its presence has been ever-present since your infancy, so the silence in your mind sets you ill at ease. The Brainmate sends re-assuring vibrations through your frontal lobe, similar to those of The Brain, and the feeling subsides.

You enter a circular chamber. On the eastern side is a shallow pool, glowing from beneath. In the middle of the room, three sharp stalagmites jut out of the ground, and a ten-foot-wide hole gapes open in the ceiling above them. You enter through the south, where a pair of urophians*, disguised as more stalagmites, guard the path to the duergar village.

*A urophian is the result of ceremorphic implantation of an Illithid fetus into a roper. The only known successful implantation of an Illithid mind into a cold-blooded creature, urophians are every bit as intelligent as you are. Still, their station in life means they are treated as lesser creatures by Illithids such as yourself.

The urophians appreciate the courtesy deeply. Having only one another to communicate with every moment of their century-long existence, they take your perfunctory greeting as an invitation to conversation.

"Hey, where ya headed? Got a big mission ahead of you? Yeah, I bet it's a really big mission. Real important, y'know? You look pretty important. And might I say that's a good fit of dampsuit for you--really accentuates your figure. What was your host? Don't tell me--a gray elf, right? I bet it was a gray elf!"

You could be free of their incessant, telepathic prattling, but for the fact that the path you took into the room is seemingly where the walking path ends. As you wander around the chamber, the urophians continue to badger you.

Should you prove able, telekineticaly open all doors at range to avoid this problem (while you and asa are both behind cover to prevent unnecessary damage to your person or thrall)

Also, for Asa: We have her devotion and loyalty much more heavily reinforced than in a normal thrall.

But let us do more. Let us work to rebuild mental acuity. Her mind is still vacant, her gaze glassy: She still lacks something, to be a perfect minion. You need to give her a reason to live, something that makes her happy to wake up to once more continue with.

This is easily achieved by simply increasing satisfaction levels as a chemical response to considering her roll, so that she finds personal enjoyment out of it. It is proven that these foods perform much more ably when they feel themselves content, rather than bored or vacuous.

Then, address Asa, and ask her:

"What do you think of your new role as my thrall?"

While she responds, try to nudge her towards enjoyment, pride, diligance, and other thoughts conducive to good performance, both to make her say them, and to make them more relevant to her psyche. The great thing is the amount of work we have put into her already makes her idyllically suited to this treatment.

And thusly, we restore her to her original full capacity.

So that in the future, we may work to mold her into an even greater tool.

When Asa opens the wooden door on the right, an arrow flies out through the open door and grazes her arm. She screams in a bloody fury, and a further arrow sails past her head. She bellows out her anger, spittle flying out from her tusked mouth.

Asa is confused--she has never seen such a creature before. It has taught, yellow-green skin, protruding cheekbones, and sunken, yellow eyes. It stands about 6 feet tall and wears a chain shirt. He had a composite longbow, but he just dropped it in order to draw a glowing shortsword from the scabbard at his side.

You recognize the creature as a Githzerai, one of the race of Gith who escaped your people's control and now make war on illithid kind. You are particularly well trained at fighting them.

Asa growls furiously in her barbaric tongue and charges headlong at the gith. She smashes down with the femur, but the gith leaps out of the way, and she shatters the wooden crates he was perched upon.

The gith circles around behind Asa and opens up a wide gash in her back, through a gap in her protective hides. She howls in pain, and her black blood splatters across the wall as the gith ends his strike with a flourish. He looks into your white, pupil-less eyes challengingly.

Hungrily, you rap your tentacles around his head, and secrete a corrosive fluid that dissolves the top of his skull almost instantly. As his body goes limp, you grab him around the chest and hold him up.

You have never eaten Gith before. You taste memories of a chaotic, swirling plane of mists. A glorious burst of wisdom and self-discipline dances across your palate, and your senses are overwhelmed by the pure joy of this exotic meal. You moan in ecstasy as his childhood, adolescence, and early adult memories flow down your throat in a stream of gooey, protein-rich jelly. Finally, your tentacles pick away at the remaining bits of the brain, and you come to the most delicious part of the meal: his last moments.

    ****
You feel yourself poised, crouched in darkness, waiting for your quarry. For months you have tracked the movements of an illithid diplomat to the Drow, and now, as he approaches, you spring your trap. You fire an arrow into the back of its neck, killing the illithid instantly. You hide his body away in one of the storage rooms near the gate, then wait in the other room, listening for the scout you are certain will be sent to investigate. Hours later, an orc opens the door, but you are ready with your bow already pulled taught. You fire two shots, one grazing, one wild. You see the illithid patrolman you had expected. The orc attacks, you dodge effortlessly, then remember the teachings of Zerthimon which hold you centered against the illithid's psionic attack. You achieve a minor wound on the horrific creature, but at the cost of losing your centered state of mind; he takes advantage. The last thing you feel is a mouth sucking your brain out through the top of your head.

    --Better circumvent such defenses later

Then, attend to Asa, possibly using this, her physically wounded and mentally more fragile state as the moment to ask her what she thinks of working with you, and then using your established manipulations as a base, to steer her thoughts towards the better parts: Rose tint her memories thus far with you.

Work on that thought process she just had, on the loss of love to go with the heightened fear: Perhaps this can be reversed/altered?

Basically, can we give her a minor case of cognitive dissonance (happens to sapient beings all the time, small ones don't cause psychological issues), in that she is both afraid of us because we were willing to attack while she was in the way, AND as an example for herself of how she did not predict her master's needs well enough, and thus was caught in the blast as a byproduct, and master does NOT want to hurt us unduly, cue increased love/guilt over having failed, but given your nonchalant attitude about the event, her conclusion (at your behest) shall be that this simply means she needs to study you better, study the environment better, and in general attempt to perform more ably to make up for this failure she now believes herself to have committed.

While doing this, take an assessment of Asa's brain, versus what you know of illithid mind function. Start roughing a plan on how to bestow some of superior synaptical structure on a thrall, thus boosting their intelligence.

I solemnly swear that I will not railroad you. Just remember that the Elder Brain is a powerful entity that controls Mind Flayer society from top to bottom (kind of like The Computer in Paranoia), and fucking with the Elder Brain will most likely not pan out well.

Not just a *powerful* entity, mind you. A CR 25 entity.

The goggles aren't tinted, but they do seem to magnify nearby objects.

Okay, seriously, I'm closing my browser window now before I let myself get sucked back in. Good night, /tg/.

I'm sad I missed the whole combat scene. I had kept up with it up until then.
