You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a defender of the weak. You are a force for good.

    Last Post in Previous Thread:

You resolve to learn enough about channeling to allow Lark to make use of your substantial energies, and cast the powerful spell needed to ensure that the mage cannot escape or dispel his attachment to the town without being killed or severely injured. While you study, Jerith will be kept under guard in the Hall, where he can tend to the swordsman until he's sure he's beyond help.

With a cart full of ice and the disemboweled body of a possible enemy spy, the twins leave for the fortress, on a journey that you hope is not going to be eventful. Maybe, if something like that can help safeguard the entire nation, it'll be worth what you had to do. And maybe, if it turns out that you did, inadvertently, prevent an infiltration, that'll give you some pull with the government.

At least you have someone else to learn from, and someone else to provide magical assistance. Lark has told you on more than one occasion that he's getting old, and his talents will soon fade into nothing. If this mage can take up a little of the slack, that would be perfect. A decade of intensive study under apprenticeship doesn't compare to a few months of reading and focusing without any real understanding.

After the charm is complete, you hope Jerith will be able to do some good. You killed two of his companions and might have rendered his leader insane, but you spoke up for him, and kept him alive. It would be... horrible to lose every single one of them, no matter how you rationalize it. Whatever you do, this has to work out for the best.

Once things calm down for the next long timeskip, I think we though DEFINITELY study up on any Ice Deities that are:
    1. REAL

    2. Good

We're a freaking Superbeing of Frost, we're already, like, probably his great-grand-niece. It could potentially give us:
    1. A God's Favor
    and
    2. Some Meta-universe info, possibly about the nature of the dark trend our Ice powers seem to have and the (seemingly forgotten as of late) question on why/how we're here.

    Writing.

    >>7968945
    It does, I suppose.

The nature of magic in this world is quite different from what you had expected. 'Spells', such as they are, do not produce a single, immutable effect upon casting. Rather, a spell encompasses a broad range of effects, and is fairly easy to manipulate once you've mastered the state of mind that allows you to cast it. The spell Ice Grenade gives you the ability to summon exploding shards of ice, but the way in which you do so is up to you.

You can cast them one at a time or in multiples, limit the explosions or increase their power tenfold. You can make them erupt from the ground or form inside objects, animals, or persons, as long as you can focus directly on your target. In fact, you've even figured out how to institute a time-delay, but this requires a lot of concentration and is still fairly error-prone.

He can heal extensive injuries and minor diseases, but in actual regeneration he runs into diminishing returns. He's capable of extending a person's natural lifespan, but it takes a lot of power, and the more he does it, the less it helps.

Lark has been serving as the town healer, but he's been having trouble keeping up. There aren't many who would be willing to accept the mage's help right now, though.

To start a Bolshevist revolution, we need to handle things on both the left and right hand.

We've done very well with what Lenin termed the left handed side of things. We've taught and taken care of the local peasants well enough and become integrated enough among them that they naturally look to us. When something occurs in the village, it is us that they look to for help, when something occurs they inform us, when they prosper they attribute it to us, and when they suffer they will attribute it to the legitimate government and the environment. We have become the de facto leader of this area, and ought to look to expanding our left-handed methods elsewhere; surely there are other villages that could be improved through progressive, rational, Bolshevist methods just as this one has, which would then integrate themselves into a shadow government under a soviet lead by pre-existing village leaders and our own Bolshevist manipulators.

But more than that, and more immediately, we need right-hand methods. For a truly Leninist Bolshevism we need to work on entering the Duma or it's equivalent to give the Party both token legitimacy and, more importantly, some legal protection and cover for it's subversive left-handed methods.

This is important because if we are at the stage where our methods have succeeded enough to organize an overthrow and our left-handed methods have reached all the way into the enemy nation, we can negotiate PEACE. We can end this destructive war through a single, swift, beautiful coup d'etat placing the workers and peasants of the organized soviets in charge of their own nation--and while we do this, our left-handed methods will be at work in the neighboring countries, causing the fire of international revolution to spread rapidly across the fields of the suffering masses. Workers of the world unite!

He's absolutely fine. Feels better than ever, really. At the insistance of the elders, he's been taking it easy, but so far hasn't had any problems.

The book of Basic Magic Lore contains tables of various deities and other powerful entities, divided into sections relating to their favored sphere. In the ice/frost/cold section, you find a long, long list of gods, goddesses, demons, and unbound beings, each with their own quirks, and many with the tag 'dubious', meaning their existence is unconfirmed.

The most powerful beings on the list range between evil and neutral, but as you turn the pages they become more likely to be good. If you want a powerful patron, your best bet is one of the neutrals, but if you'd prefer a god more in line with your morals, you'll be better off with one of the mediocre beings.

As food for thought here is a small and incomplete list of possible over-arching goals to work on:
    1. Improve the quality of life in the village/win the villager's trust
    2. Improve odds of survival within the fantasy world by studying magic, making ourselves hard to find, and/or somehow winning the good will of the Lord that's after us.
    3. Find out why we are here/how we got here.
    4. Possibly use our knowledge of tech/sci to advance the town to a level of pseudo-modernity. Possibly break off into self-governance.

It was auto-hidden. It's still there.

The cities of the mid-country are vast, towering with magically strengthened structures and packed to the brim with tenements, factories, shops, and public buildings. Their streets swarm with humans at all hours, rushing to and fro in a flurry of unending activity. Wizards and practicing magicians stand at every corner, offering their talents along with the street vendors and the journeymen, willing to cast hundreds of spells at bargain rates.

Ornithopters, great, winged craft fashioned from wood and canvas, patrol the air between the scattered metropolises, carrying passengers and goods on the fastest routes through the air. They are small, heavy craft, extremely fragile and only suited for light work, but they are fast, and they can glide without the aid of magic, thus enabling them to land safely even after their power source has failed.

The pilots are skilled, well-trained men with reflexes above and beyond the norm. They ride the currents like the most graceful birds, finding the paths only they can see. It is they that form the backbone of the fastest couriers, ferrying perishables and emergency personnel, taking on rush jobs for the weight of the gold it nets them. Though they are few, and their craft are simple, breakable things, they fly.

It has been three days. With constant practice, you've finally managed to get your channeling skill up enough for Lark to agree to attempt the bind. It feels very strange, like suddenly having all the strength sapped from your body, and it leaves you so tired you could drift off at any moment, but it works.

Lark presses his palm against the man's forehead, concentrates for a moment, and then removes it, leaving a bright, green rune imprinted on Jerith's skin. It flashes several different colors, and then disappears.

“Done,” says the old man, sitting down on a nearby stool, “You can move to the edge of the forest. If you go in, you have three seconds to get back out.”

The mage nods, rubbing the spot where the symbol appeared. Lark waves the guards off, and they go about their business reluctantly, still casting backwards glances at the poor spellcaster.

With this done, you can get back to your regular schedule. There are still houses to build, a bathroom to construct, and a methane furnace to plan, among other things. You feel out of it, but if you spend the next few hours being careful not to exert yourself, you should be fine. Lark needs some help getting up again, but insists he's alright.

The day goes well, all things considered. Kel, your apprentice, hangs around you a lot closer than he does normally, spending a great deal of his time watching the mage who is now in your care. Jerith is a man of great skill and humility, trying to stay out of everyone's way instead of acting the least bit defiant, even though his power is sufficient to slay many if he was so inclined.

Surrounded by a fine, purple glow, he lifts staggering weights and moves them with ease, doing the work of two or three men by himself. He struggles, but refuses your assistance, telling you quietly that he shouldn't be seen relying on you, as he needs to work for himself, to lessen the strength of his misdeeds.

As night falls, the exhausted mage retires to the Hall, which Lark guards with several farmers. He tends to the swordsman, who no longer screams at all hours, though his wild eyes still lock with yours, filling you with a sense of dread. The soft, crimson light puts him to sleep as Jerith works through the essence of his mind, pulling at the remaining threads of a retreating soul.

In your cavern, safe from the dealings of the surface, you open the tome of Magic Lore, finding the place where you located the god of your choosing. A neutral, powerful and wise, as reasonable as they come, with a soft spot for mortals and their silly problems. If you can contact him, perhaps you can find out more about this world, and maybe, if you're lucky, you can acquire the power to make this town stand fast against all evils.

You chant the incantation shown to you by the book, calling the name of a god you can't be sure exists, wishing for contact. You focus without patterns, letting your mind shine like a searching beacon into the darkness of a plane beyond your senses. You find a light. You pull it.

A great, booming voice fills your head.

“HRETMAR ANSWERS YOUR MORTAL PLEA. SPEAK YOUR MIND.”

We should powderize one fistful at a time, noting their origins, add water, and leave the mixture to dry in our cave.

“I SEE FROM YOUR BOOK THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN ME FROM AMONG ALL MY SIBLINGS. THIS PLEASES ME.” He laughs. “I AM NOT A GOD OF WAR, OR OF BATTLE, OR OF BLOOD. I AM A KEEPER OF SECRETS, PROTECTOR OF THE MIDDLE PATH. THAT WHICH IS NEITHER GOOD NOR EVIL IS MINE. MY CHILDREN DO NOT SPEAK TO ME OFTEN.” At this, he chuckles quietly, though his eyes are saddened. It seems obvious that a race known for pillaging and destruction wouldn't have much use for a neutral god.

“Thank you for your help, venerated Hretmar.” He nods. “I would like to know...”

You converse with the Lord of the North for awhile, posing questions and answering queries, going off on tangents occasionally like you were talking to a normal human. He knows of your adopted town, as he knows of most settlements in the North, but the people there were nothing more than a curiosity to him, as they know him not, and are not of his chosen race, besides. If you wish for him to help them, or to help you help them, he is willing.

“I CONFESS THAT MY REASONS ARE NOT ENTIRELY HONORABLE,” he tells you gravely, “FOR I HAVE LONG SEEMED WITHOUT A PURPOSE. I HAVE BEEN... BORED.”

    Artist's rendition of Hretmar.

After the villages and the human kingdom have become a haven for the workers and peasants, we can set to work at reaching out to our fellow Frost Giants, educating and socializing them to function without engaging in the habitual violence and pillaging of the workers and peasants, thus simultaneously alleviating the exploitation of the labor classes, expanding the power and reach of international socialism, aiding and reinvigorating the giants, AND restoring honor, care, and proper respect to Hretmar.

Hretmar is the key to our revolution's expansion across racial boundaries and it's eventual incorporation of the frost giants.

As Lark suspected, the tablet binds a spirit of cold within it. It is angry, restless, and quite nasty, but very powerful. Hretmar himself could squash it like a bug, but that would remove a useful source of power for you.

He knows nothing of the Demons of the Deep, beyond their actions once they rise from the mantle. They appear infrequently, searching for something he cannot fathom, and are cut down by the mortals they attack. Alone, they are no great threat to a well-prepared force. In groups, they are to be feared and avoided.

Pretty cool guy. Cultivating a friendship with him could be very fun. Mostly Listen to what he has to say, he's timeless, and who wouldn't want to hear about the stories that the fatther of gods knows. Similarly knowledge of worlds beyond the planes he knows would be amazing for a god of knowledge to learn. He's an awesome guy and we should spend plenty of time comuning with him.

Also, two other possibilities open up: Dedicating our libraries to him (possibly writing what we know of math/science/etc in a few volumes), and exploring the underworkings of the crust in his name.

His brothers and sisters have led the Frost Giants to great victories over the titans of the wastes, the Demons of ash and magma, and occasionally the pitiful, nomadic humans who wrap themselves in fur. At one time, Hretmar oversaw a host of clerics and scholars, when times were good. They were far from neutral, but he ignored any ideological differences because they shared his love for the pursuit of knowledge. Once, with his help, a priest of the ice called so much power that an entire mountain range rose out of the glaciers, sealing a hundred thousand volcanic elementals within a rocky tomb.

At some time in your life, you must see the old fortress-city of Karok, far, far to the North, in a land that is now a blasted desert. In that place, the Frost Giants reached their peak, almost becoming a race of benevolent, learned beings, when their greatest spell, cast from an ancient artifact, summoned their end. The gods of fire themselves were pulled from their plane, purging the city clean life in a fit of rage. All that survives in their deepest vaults is their history and their science, inscribed into a neverending wall of ice. It is a place to see.

As for what not to do, 'don't touch fire' is pretty high on the list. Don't dabble in summoning before you've spent plenty of time in practice, don't start wars you can't win, don't prank-call gods, things of that nature.
