Presumably, it's to pay for the rituals that have to take place for the sake of the barrier's preservation. The reason why she is so perturbed regarding the lack of it is that it is the one thing keeping the realm stable, and she lacks the proper funding to maintain it.

Do you know how hard it is to find manwhores in Gensokyo? Do you REALLY want a sexually-frustrated and cranky Reimu?

Either for the upkeep of the temple, or she just wants to buy lots of men to throw herself into and boy-surf. Mikos love the cock.

Well the Shinto shrine business really got going when the second mongol invasion of Japan was deflected by the walls on the coasts and the final kami-kaze which destroyed an entire fleet. The emperor at the time considered the shrines to have worked, and just in case, ordered regural prayer to be held because the Japanese expected the mongols to try again - which they never did. So like in Europe where monks were paid to pray for a soul to be able to go to heaven, in Japan monks were paid to act as a supernatural military weather beacon. Plus like the abbots and bishops of Europe the monks of Japan set up their own little armies until the goverment subdued them. And like monks and priests today, the shinto shrines are empty little despair boxes where inb4anhero people beg for teh moneyz to pay the upkeep.

Technically d10 based, but most combat is solved more like a puzzle than anything else. Numbers should be small.

The basics of combat are that a character puts bullets down on their turn and moves them around. The idea is to make it so the enemy can't make any moves without getting hit or just trick them and end up hitting them anyway.

There are four stats: Cuteness, Laser, Dodging and Hat. Cuteness determines bullet strength and how long a fight will last. Laser determines how many bullets you can put down per turn and how far they can move. Dodging determines movement and possibly other agility-related things. Hat is toughness and determines health, as the more impressive and unwieldy your silly hat is, the stronger you must be to wear it. (But you don't NEED to have a hat. Fluff-wise, a high hat score can just represent a lot of weird quirks in your character's appearance, like Byakuren's technicolor hair or Flandre's christmas light wing THINGS).

Hard non-combat stuff is solved by d10+relevant stat, contested. When there's no opposing stat to contest, the GM can probably just ad-hoc a difficulty.

Once the basics are down pat, I'd like to flesh out traits that represent things the character is or can do that makes them unique.

I'd treat it like 4E's minion vs monster difference: lesser enemies can engage one player in vast numbers, but greater enemies - mid-stage/end-stage bosses or greater enemies (like Koakuma or particularly strong fairies) - must declare a challenge. When a player is challenged, the only greater enemy allowed to deliberately harm the challenged player is the challenging monster - even super-powerful monsters must be taken out 1v1, like during the Lunarian challenge in SSiB. Lesser enemies can still engage a challenged player, which makes AoE effects still extremely viable.

How so? d20s are a little big and I'm not the most keen on d20 systems, and d6 seems to imply dicepools. Hate dicepools, but they COULD work with smaller numbers like this has. d4, maybe, but d4s are infernal, evil things. Like intelligent and malicious caltrops.

By the way, starting stats would be 10 to spread across the four. I also neglected to mention that there will be a mechanic for bombs: You start with a number equal to the sum of your highest and lowest stat, and can use them to recover health when you go down or clear the field of one person's bullets. Other possible uses are welcome, and I'm sure many could be made into Traits.

A lot of little dice universally would imply a lot of (glancing) hits, which would be contrary to the "one hit, you're dead" playstyle of the games. Whatever the stat for 'toughness' on players is, it would be representative of the lives the player has; get hit, lose a life irrecoverably until you defeat the boss. Bosses would be able to take that level of punishment without batting an eye though, so perhaps d10 on collision with a bullet, players automatically lose a life on hit unless they interrupt with a bomb (no idea how to make that work), bosses take d6 damage.

Some kind of graze system where there's a reward for moving between bullets as frequently as possible, and a power level system to represent the [P]s a player has accumulated would also be a nice touch. The former would reward creative solutions to near-entrapment, while the latter would reward consecutive perfect victories. I can see the power system being easily worked into the d6 to bosses that I mentioned earlier, something like d6+power with a maximum of 10 power levels.

The "Toughness" stat is currently called "Hat". I imagine that half (or one third) of it would be a number you take away from bullet damage, and twice it (or three times) would be your health. Probably 1/3 and twice. As it stands, the use of bombs as shields is when you lose all your health--it beings you back to half. The idea in a duel isn't necessarily to shoot your opponent down, but to have the most health left when it ends (Number of rounds determined in some way by Cuteness, still up in the air).

As for your ideas...Pretty interesting. We can talk about them as the thread goes on, as this REALLY need a system of character advancement, and specifically rules for when stats increase and when traits are gained. But that will come after we actually HAVE traits to gain and the stats are set in stone.

We can depart from strictly following the games for the sake of making something that works better. If it turns out that the idea of "lives" is simpler and more fun, then it'll change, but let's go with health for now.

    >why would i not want health?
The feel of encounters in the games (and in the official non-game material) is that the player is a frail but powerful attacker whose defense is agility in dodging bullets (focus) and speed in moving away from them (non-focus). 'Lives' would be a fluffier representation of this, and since combat is swamping your opponent in bullets, having a turn of insubstantial movement for repositioning after each 'death' would prevent the player from being "hit when they're down." A large-value HP system would be needless in Gensokyo's bloodless battles, since it exists for systems where players are dealing, taking, and healing a lot of damage.

Given the source material, it's easier to think of it as taking a tremendous blow, then after a winded period (lose your presently fired bullets, upgrades, and so on) you regain your full power. The trick is that after losing a life, the flow of the battle turns against you since your bullets were shitter for a short period of time, giving the enemy some breathing room and opportunity to set up more danmaku for you

Getting hit and losing a 'life' would be the physical equivalent of having a clean hit to your body: a quick moment of adrenaline by which you scamper to a safer position. You're not 'dead' since despite what the mechanics in the games are, Gensokyo fluff dictates that nobody dies due to danmaku. Running out of 'lives' is when you're battered and out of breath, unable to successfully dodge anymore.

    >>8033702
I'd visualize that as an AGI-type stat that goes into the d10 to determine a hit when colliding with a bullet. More agile characters like Youmu or Reimu could "just barely" dodge the bullet, while less agile ones like Letty or Yuugi would take a hit.

You're convincing me on the first point, but on the second...I'm not quite so sure. I've already stated that including dice in combat is iffy, because I'd like the focus to be on positioning and attack patterns than just rolling rolling rolling. Colliding with a bullet should be something you'd want to avoid, and when it happens, you should be down a life, no two ways about it. Maybe something a little different with a certain trait or two.

Close enough for government work; someone once asked ZUN why characters have lives, if the danmaku battles are bloodless, and he said it was because they got shot down. When someone asked what lives represented in that case, he responded "Well, to put it simply, it's guts."

Deferring to the games, players collide their sprite with bullets extremely often without the bullets contacting the player's hitbox. A bullet entering the player's square would be like a bullet coming in contact with the player's sprite, with a successful dodge roll meaning the bullet missed the hitbox, and a failed dodge meaning the bullet contacted the hitbox. This would make a bullet entering the player's square not a death sentence, but a very risky and preferably avoided situation.

As for how to resolve post-miss positioning, the only idea I have is the player getting to move to an adjacent point, repeating the dodge roll (possibly with a higher difficulty) if there's a bullet in that new square.

Dodonpachi still kicks my ass, but that's because I haven't been trying it seriously. Same with IN Lunatic. SA/UFO Lunatic and most other Cave titles are beyond me, though.

I have Ikaruga... should try beating that again sometime (I own the gamecube and XBLA versions). Also should try to hunt down Radiant Silvergun... and a dreamcast to play it on.

I bought Mobile Light Force 2 in a bargain bin. Cover has nothing to do with the game at all... turns out to be a pretty decent shooter. And by decent, I mean playable with interesting mechanics.

As for Cave games, they're designed to kick your ass. Moreso than other bullet hell shooters.

Yeah, thanks for the heads-up. Trying to follow >>8035346's instructions, but FireYiff is going "HURRRR REINSTALL JAVA" instead of finding the correct app for it. I'm about to body slam my computer if it doesn't get on with the program soon.

You should download a client if you're having trouble. mIRC works for Windows, and Colloquy works for Mac.

So, what are the names of some good shootemups? I don't have the jewgold for importing anything, but I've got a computer that can emulate anything up to a PS2 game, and I know I've heard of at least a handful of good shootemups on that platform, but I never really got around to looking into them

Install MAME. Get anything with Raiden, four-digit numbers starting with 19 and Donpachi in the title, then grab Cyvern, Mars Matrix and Progear.
