    /tg/, help, I have a crisis.
One of my players has apparently lost his mind. He found the highest level paladin he could (some 8-10 levels higher than him) and, in what must have been the most foolish move I have ever witnessed, sent a trio of assassins (all of whom knew said PC personally) to murder the Paladin's wife, and kidnap his infant daughter. His motives are unclear.
This might have had some chance of success, but one of the other players suggested via a covert note that his Rogue would follow, and cause one of the (significantly lower level) assassins to be captured. This is because of some political intrigue which has put the rogue at odds with the aforementioned player (a cleric of Asmodeus) though the latter is unaware of it.

So /tg/, if you were a Paladin, and you came home to find your house burning, your wife dead (and probably horribly abused), and your daughter missing, and some jackass with blood on his knives unconscious outside of your front door (looks like he slipped and fell on his way out) what would you do?
Pic Related, it was the picture I showed to get the Paladin's personality across the first time they saw him in the Duke's court.

Wrong answer, because this makes you a railroading faggot.

It seems your player is trying to make the paladin fall. This may or may not work, depending on how truly LG the paladin is.

    Did he get the daughter?

He did. The rogue specified that he let the one with the girl get away so that the Paladin would have a reason to chase after the cleric.

First of all, unless the Cleric uses any divination spells, don't tell him what the Paladin is doing.

Secondly, the Paladin should be having an internal struggle between wanting to seek vengeance for his family, and trying to stay cold and objective about the situation. In either case, he will try to hunt the PC down, either personally or through henchmen (depending on how lawful he is/what is day-to-day duties are).

In any case, simply by killing his wife, torching his house, and doing something terrible to his infant daughter, don't let the Paladin fall. This is the sort of trial-by-fire thing that Paladins dig. Unless the player has something truly original in mind (and he better, otherwise don't hold back the obvious inevitability of SMITE EVIL), the Paladin will eventually hunt him down, and kill him.

Ok. Have the paladin under some anti-scry field, to keep the cleric from monitoring his actions.

paladin drops him off at his superior's feet
they may or may not have vows but they can sure as hell take him to the inquisition and mind fuck the information out. Cleric of Asmodeus to boot. Perfect target of some LG smiting.

The problem I can forsee is that he could use the party to try and fight back or just have some general dickish scheme planned for this. That is where rouges 10 levels higher than him come in. Send some inquisitorial agents to nab the girl from under his nose and some Paladins to curb stomp the PC to the brink of death so he can be tried and horribly executed by "A plea of innocence is GUILTY! of wasting my time" sorta judge. Also, soul trap/banish shred the soul of the mofo so he can't pull off some daemonic ritual or join his dark master in the afterlife.

    Simple.

The paladin sounds like an important man.
He seems to know the local leader.
The paladin obviously know who'se the culprit by now.

-Put a very large bounty on the cleric (wanted alive)** and have letters sent to the neighbor duchies/nations/whatever to warn them,

-Reward for bringing the girl back.

-Anyone who is found to hide information on the cleric's wayabouts will be considered criminals as well.

This leaves the party two choice. Help the cleric and become hunted as well, give the cleric and get rewarded.
**That way he can be "shown the error of his ways".
Failing that, get the paladin to demand help from his God, and show how 10 levels and being a good guy goes.

Don't forget, the paladin knows his girl would become a martyr if she's killed (thus her soul is basically safe) AND he knows that if the cleric kills her, he don't have any leverage left. You can expect some truly epic divine retribution if that happens.
Really, your player didin't plan his thing thoroughly.

I think it'd be interesting to run a campaign which is entirely based off of "You kidnapped that Paladin's daughter, and now they've launched a global Inquisition AGAINST THE PARTY."

With the right players, you could keep it going for like, two sessions before the pallies burn the players at the stake and declare their names Anathema.

    >the paladin knows his girl would become a martyr if she's killed (thus her soul is basically safe) AND he knows that if the cleric kills her, he don't have any leverage left.

    That is a terrifying notion.
    "I'll kill the girl!"
    "No you won't."
    "...What?"
"You won't, because if you kill the girl, you have no leverage yet. The only reason I haven't had a Solar twist your head off yet is that you have my daughter. If she dies, I will rest easy knowing that her soul is safe... But you will die. And unlike mine, your god does not look kindly on wasted investments."

LG paladin stuff? First of all, take the prisoner alive and confirm that he's actually involved in this atrocity. Having him unconscious on my doorstep with blooded knives in hand is a bit too convenient, and could be a frame job - the last thing I want is to SMITE EVIL on the wrong guy.

Then get in touch with fellow paladins, knight-brothers in my holy order, clerics etc. By whatever means are acceptable to my god I will find out who orchestrated this attack. I will then enlist the aid of my holy brethren - paladins, clerics, avengers. This blow was struck against my family, against innocents undeserving of such a fate, and was clearly meant as a blow against myself and what I stand for. Thus, the perpetrator is an enemy of my order and of my god, and it is in the interest of my order to hunt this foe down.

Then I will put on my Righteous Retribution face. In the name of my god, I will see those who slew my family brought to account - not vengeance, but justice. I will find out who they are, I will track them down, and I will see them pay for their crimes.

Nothing will stop me. Not oceans, not deserts, not storms or wildfires. No matter stone he might hide under or hole he might crawl into, the light of my righteous cause will fall upon him and he will be purged. I will fill my heart not with fury or rage, but with steadfast determination and single-minded tenacity. My faith in my god will nourish and sustain me, and keep my purpose pure.

I have tracked the infernal wretches through the dark temple. It lies stained with the blood of the wicked. Those who kidnapped my daughter and destroyed my home, my wife's murderers, had fled through a gateway to the Ninth Level of Hell...Asmodeus' plane. I have long known that they were devotees of the Tyrant, but they did not appear to have this much influence with their dark god when they murdered my wife.

The Order is in shambles behind me, and only Initiate Cersus remained to put the temple to the torch. Should I ever return from this, I shall petition for the Sun Father to grant him sainthood.

I fear I shall never know the Shining One's touch again, for my powers have fled from me in this dark place. I will not falter, though. Justice must be done, and I will not take the easy path. I will follow these monsters to Asmodeus' very feet if I must, and spit in his eye as I smite him with whatever divine might remains within me.

If I were OP-DM, I'd make the clerics obvious plan to have the paladin fall go horribly, horribly wrong. If he had tried this with a fairly normal paladin, it might have resulted something less terrifying.

But 8-10 levels higher? Fall? Oh no, not this guy.

The cleric better pray this is a paladin of the more pacifist gods. A martial agent of a pacifist god. He might survive with his life. If we're talking about something like the lawful good god of punishing and smiting evil, then there is no form of personal revenge aside from hurting uninvolved innocents, that could make this paladin fall.

He has been wronged in a most profound way, and there must be punishment. Just, but not nice.

Honestly, even a paladin of Pelor with Tits wouldn't be inclined to keep this fucker alive. The important part is just to keep a clear line between just vengeance and bitter revenge, and _firmly_ keep the paladin in the right side of things. A Cleric of Asmodeus that does deeds like this is not something to be redeemed, but something to be put down, before he ruins other lives.

    Paladin Saminar's Journal, Day 133:
I stand before Asmodeus' court. I am awash in the acrid blood of Pit Fiends. I have been unable to sleep, bathe, or keep my beard trimmed properly in the Style of Pelor for weeks. My blade is pockmarked and nicked from the infernal creatures' bones.

I am unsure of how I have found the time to write here. The scrolls of Pelor insist that the Dictator Fiend's wounds produce the smaller demons constantly. Perhaps they gather behind the obsidian door before me, readying an ambush.

    I welcome their assault.

Each fiend I strike down reassures my place in the afterlife, beside the spirits of my family. Each wound that stings with the blood of these beasts renews my dedication to the cause.

Pelor may not be able to assist me in this Dark Plane, but I will bring the Light of his Justice to it all the same. I will punish the wicked. I will charge into the throne room of the Master of Darkness himself, and I will smite him as I smite all evil.

I must go now. The gate opens.

It was the first hinting that the kindly old priest of pelor that hung around and gave us divine magic discounts was a major villain when this brigand made off with most of the valuables and set the church on fire.
It was some kind of homebrew spell that exposed them to the 'light of good' or something to burn away impurities- You could make will saves to fully devote yourself away from it and get out, or accept an alignment change.
Until then, you were stuck under heatlamps until you made a save or accepted good, with the worst sunburn ever.

...So the cleric uses a wisdom-draining poison to drop his wisdom to three, hits him with a Suggestion not to accept the alignment change out, and left him in a backroom, healing him occasionally.

We shat bricks when we found him.

    Paladin Saminar's Journal, Day 142:
It is done. The Cleric of Asmodeus, his party of thieves and murderers, accomplices in his dark deeds, are dead. Pit Fiend corpses spread as far as the eye can see. Asmodeus himself lies at my feet. As a god, he cannot truly be killed except by another god, but the wounds I have inflicted on him since our battle have kept him at bay. Surely, the power of Good has shone on me in this Dark place, for me to have prevailed in single combat with an Astral Demon on his own plane.

My own wounds are so extensive that I cannot tell the putrid blood of these Fiends from mine own. My blade is so dull now that it is little more than a metal club. My armor has long since burned away from the acidic coating of demons' blood that covers me.

I am unsure of how my flesh endures where sanctified steel could not. Pelor help me, but I think this plane has affected me in ways I cannot understand.

Asmodeus stopped threatening me and calling me mortal yesterday. I can see the fear of Justice in his inhuman eyes, now. I think he understands that I will not yield until Pelor comes to relieve me.

    I feel...strong.

Dude, OP - your cleric PC now has a bounty on his head. Pretty much without doubt, since the paladin can question the remaining assassin. The cleric is also going to have one fucking hard time keeping an infant girl under wraps for long, given that he has to keep her alive to have any bargaining power for anything.

Meanwhile, if anyone finds out about what he's done they'll either kill or flip him. To his superiors he's now a bargaining token to try and ease pressure on other fronts by looking good here and making a nice pretty show of "catching" him. To most people, he's a head with a price tag - everyone and anyone is now a potential snitch for the money. And of course good-aligned people will want him dead or in chains.

All in all, dude's fucked. Question is, how much of this line of reasoning do you want to throw the party to see if they'll go behind his back to be the ones getting the benefit from dragging him in?

It is also entirely possible that this Paladin, being the highest level Paladin around, is also the best one suited to tracking these fiends down.

Paladins of Pelor often dress in civilian garb when on the move, and seek to protect the weak and innocent. Searching for the child he believes is taken is right up his alley, since it's protection, and there's nobody better at it than he--he's the highest ranked and most noble.

What I'd do, as this DM, is throw in some opportunities to screw over some innocents later on. Let the covertly moving Paladins establish a lead on this guy, and then track him down.

If you can, find a way for this dickbag to make a jump for power. Like, some kind of horridly evil artifact that you may be supposed to destroy but can conveniently be used by a cleric of evil.

Once this guy goes full retard and decides A God Am I, the Paladins can show up and just lead to a beatdown of epic proportions where this guy is just crushed for his stupidity.

Ideally, I'd like to make it so the other players side with the paladins, but if your team is mostly all Chaotic Stupid then just use this as a "Time to suffer some realistic consequences" ending to a campaign gone awry.

Bonus points, plot hook for new group. New quest giver, the Paladin. Destroy the artifact.

OH SHIT, DM-OP! I just realized something - do one of those classic "crime gone wrong" moments. Has the cleric set up any way of caring for a newborn child? Does he have any food for her? Anyone who can nurse or care for her? A trusted, *competent* associate watching the fragile infant child?

If not, kill the baby. It's not intended, it's not part of the plan, but the idiot who was tasked with holding her couldn't get her to stop crying while a guard patrol was coming closer and closer and he just held her tightly under a pillow to keep her silent and... now what? The cleric's lost his bargaining chip, but the paladin doesn't know it yet.

    Paladin Saminar's Journal, Day 155:
After much deliberation and futile prayer to my lost god, I have come to my decision.

A demon is a demon. Evil is evil. It is because of this Fiend that the Cleric could fuel his quest to burn my home, murder my beloved, and sacrifice my infant daughter on an infernal altar. It is because of this creature that my Order is lost, all of my friends butchered on the road to Justice.

No matter how fervently it may wish to be redeemed, this Dark God is incapable of it. It is impossible to redeem a thousand years of dark worship. Justice will not allow it!

I know now why Asmodeus fears me. Pelor's favor alone could not have brought me this far. To defeat a Demon Lord in single combat and keep him subdued is something even a demigod could only dream of.

Today, I will strike down this Fiend and sit upon his twisted throne. I will reshape this realm in the name of Good. I shall be like Mighty Pelor, but I shall not shirk away from what must be done. From now on, the Ninth Plane will be the Seat of Justice.

Lawful Good, although with the Law in question being that of Justice.

He is the one who is called in when a crime has been committed that puts the criminal beyond any hope of redemption other than having his soul itself rendered down and reforged. He is also the one who is called in when a dispute arises between different Good-aligned groups, since in that situation Justice is the only possible basis on which to make a choice.

At the same time, he is more lenient of temporary malfeasance in the service of good, a la Grey Guard. So long as you then seek to balance the scales afterward.

Honestly, OP, just start from "you fucked up" and build from there - ratchet up the pressure by dropping more and more bombshells of just how badly the cleric's screwed until either the party dumps his body in a ditch somewhere or they find a way to turn his dumb ass into something useful.

First let it be known the paladin knows who did it. Post the bounty. Then just run from there - if the cleric turns to higher-ups for help, they try to snag him for their own purposes. If he tries to lay low, the commoners have loose lips and he has to try and keep a baby silent and healthy. If he tries to pawn off the baby, it dies and he's *really* fucked. If he hides in the darkness, there are bounty hunters and assassins who want him. If he tries to meld into the crowd, there are good-aligned clerics and paladins tasked with bringing him down and a price on his head no peasant can resist.

There will be no moment of peace or rest while he's alive - too many people want him for too many reasons. Each time he finds a way out of one situation, there will be another one and another man hunting him... and always, always, the paladin whose home he desecrated is only a day behind him and on his trail.

He's a fugitive. He's hunted. He's royally fucked. Start from there, and just build as you go until the pressure or the challenges BREAK HIM. Your ideal goal should be him *seeking out* the paladin to give him his kid back and sobbingly beg him to make it stop.

My idea was that battling across a continent, then across a Plane, would have pumped him to the maximum level...then that infusion of demon's blood he got from days of fighting a Demon Prince in single combat gave him access to the powers that make gods what they are.

I mean, a paladin who fights on when he can't feel the favor of his deity is either stupid or a goddamn superhero, and I didn't want to write somebody stupid. >:)

And then the paladin says "Honey, what do you think?" as he turns to his assassin wife.

The reason why I figured on Lawful Good instead of Lawful Neutral is that he still cares about redemption. If it's possible for you to somehow balance the scales, he puts you on a "My Name is Earl" style work-release instead of automatic "CLEAVE AND SMITE". Only if you've done something so heinous that there is no possible way for you to ever atone would he actively seek your death. But once he does set his paladins to that task, the only question is how long you'll last before they catch you.

The Nameless One, needless to say, would be somewhat of a puzzler for him.

If we're looking at this like a couple's movie, then the one to compare the situation to would be the last part of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith".

I also think that having the cleric find out that not only is the paladin after him, but the rezzed wife is also after him, and she's more willing to get her hands dirty, would add another layer of delicious despair to his situation.

Basically, Riggs was a good cop who lost the will to live after his wife died in an "accident." He basically turns into a suicidally brave cop on the edge and he does shit like this:
