    23 KB Artifact Quest: Part 2 Ground Man !FSvMO5RY12 02/19/10(Fri)00:42 No.8164420
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/8162717/

You are a sword. You have been a sword for as long as you can remember, which is roughly three hundred years. Unfortunately for you, you've spent that most of time languishing in the hoard of a green dragon.

    But no longer.

Just yesterday, you were liberated from your gilded prison by the human wizard Arcturus and his motley crew of adventurers: noble human paladin Percival, pious human cleric Ashley, frugal halfling rogue Merri, and foppish elf Lindelasse. Sensing the potential in the ineffectual Lindelasse, you have asked to be taken to be his new armament.

But your intentions may not be entirely noble. Your abilities include those of freezing and domination of will. None know the full breadth of your power, least of all yourself. But your destiny is yours, and yours alone to forge. By hook or crook, you'll make your way in this world beyond the dragon's lair.

The adventurers are returning to the riverside metropolis of Riverton, to announce their victory to the local authorities. The city is within view, but it will be a couple hours before you enter the city proper. Spirits are high in the group, and Lindelasse is playing a jaunty tune on his harp, while you ride in style at his side in a spare scabbard supplied by the paladin.

    What do?

    Spare scabbard? Lame.
    >> Anonymous 02/19/10(Fri)00:45 No.8164469
Test the waters, see how open Ashley is to Cleric/Sword relations.

Also, we deserve better than "Paladin's spare scabbard."

Sword's a lame name. We need a better one. Since the Bard's busy thinking of a newer, more heroic name for himself, he might want to think of one for us that would be pleasing to the ear beside his in song.

Additionally? Let's get to knowing the story of how he came to kill the dragon. She was...something like a friend of ours, even if we needed her dead. It would be nice to know more about why she died, and what her death served.

    "Arcturus?"

"What is it, sword?" The wizard glances over to you idly.

"Would it be possible for you to cast some sort of spell of flying on me, so that I would be able to move of my own will?"

The wizard sucks his teeth for a moment or two. "The short answer, my silvered friend, is no. The long answer is 'Yes, but no." A garden-variety fly spell wouldn't allow you to fly by itself. If I had more time and resources, I might be able to add to your abilities and make you able to fly... but I'm not trying it. I simply don't know the extend of your ability. If I try to tamper with you, you might inadvertently blast me with a freezing burst, and then BOOM! goodbye, Arcturus." He chuckles, then shrugs. "Sorry, sword. Wish I could help."

"Alright, I suppose I can do that."

"And second," you keen on, "we're getting you some lessons so that you don't walk like... like... well, like such an -elf.- You need a more confident stride. Maybe we should get you lessons from a dwarf."

Arcturus ponders this for a moment, then pulls out a red gem of indeterminate type. "Awaken, Gem of Birghtness." The gem begins to glow a bright, cascading red. "Sleep, Gem of Brightness," he intones, and just as quickly as the light came, it goes. Arcturus tosses the gem over to Lindelasse, who catches it deftly. "Now you try, sword."

After a few hours of travel, the party arrives at the gates of Riverton, "The Jewel of Rosel". It's a sprawling city built on mercantile, especially the lucrative business of adventurer outfitting. As the party approaches the gates, one of the guards standing at the gate notices your party and rushes off into the town. The others straighten up respectfully. All of the guards are wearing surcoats of quartered blue and white over scale mail, and each carries a large shield emblazoned with blue and white. Scabbards holding short swords sit on their belts. One of the guards, a portly human with mutton chops, hails your party. "Mr. Arcturus! I trust your mission has gone as planned?"

"Sir," Arcturus smiles genuinely, "the lizarrdfolk and their leader have been dealt with. No longer will they threaten the outskirts of the city."

The guards grin and bother the party no further. You and the rest of the party make your way into the city.

"Once we report our success to the governess, then we may go our separate ways," Arturus intones. The others nod. Percival and Ashley look somewhat relieved, but Lindelasse appears downcast at this news.

While you have no concept of motivational posters, you do know what dragon scales look like. You concentrate on Merri, and try to send her a mental 'image' of dragon scales...

Merri stops for a moment, then grins deviously. She follows after the party, skipping. Arcturus eyes her, nonplussed. "What has you back in a such a chipper mood all of a sudden?"

"Oh, nothing!" the halfling says in a sing-song tone of voice.

    >>8165353

You keen this message to Arcturus. The wizard looks left, then right, then shakes his head shortly and spins his finger around in a clockwise motion. Perhaps he means he'll talk about it later.

You approach the Riverton Governor's Mansion. It's an extravagant affair, marbled and expansive, a testament to Riverton's wealth. As the party approaches the doors, to of the Governess' private guards stop you at the door. One is a human man, the other an orcish woman. Apparently, in this realm, orcs are considered one of the civilized races. Go figure.

"Adjunct Arcturus Bly of the IGM and company, I presume?" the human asks.

"Indeed, sir," Arcturus nods. "May we?"

"Just a moment, sir. Gorma, you wanna...?"

"Yeah, I can inform Her Excellency," says the orc. She quietly enters the mansion, closing the door behind her.

You keen so that only Lindelasse can hear you. "So, uh, Lindy."

"Yeah, sword?" Lindelasse whispers so that only you can hear distinctly, but Arcturus eyes him whispering and shakes his head, rolling his eyes.

"You know, I've been stuck in the hoard of a green dragon for about three hundred years... maybe more, my memory doesn't go back that far. I was just wondering... about the general geography around us. Where is 'here'?"

"Ohhhh... well, us, right now, we're in Riverton. It's a trade city set on the crossing between two important rivers: the river Dominus flowing off to the east, and the Helmoure to the south. Most of this continent is controlled by the Empire of Rosel. You saw their legionaries as we were entering the city."

"The guys in the blue and white?"

"Yep. There's one other major human power on this continent, the Kingdom of Jerou to the north. To the far west lies colonial holdings of Dracony."

    "Dracony?"

"Yeah. These creatures called the dracons: not quite dragons, not quite lizard folk, but somewhere between the two, they rule it from across the western shore. They're bad news."

    "I see..."

"The orcs mainly live to the west... not far enough to reach into the Dracony colonies, but too close for comfort. My homeland," Lindelasse says with pride," is the Aelflund Forest, far to the south by southeast."

    "And the other continents?"

"Well, there's Edobar, to the west, where the Kingdoms of Rubica, Bubaria, and Dracony can be found. Travel around, and you reach right back to this continent. Then to the southwest is Pelonia, where the kingdoms of Al'Masad and Tulmesia can be found. To the south is..." here, Lindelasse shudders.

    "To the south is...?"

And then, just as suddenly as it had come, it left. You are left feeling cold, if indeed a sword can feel cold. Well... wouldn't you know better than anyone?

Lindelasse goes on. "Khyyran Rhee is a wasteland. It's the blighted example of what necromancy can do to the world if it's allowed to spread. Almost the entire continent is populated by the undead, ruled by five mighty lich kings. It's said that there are some who still live in Khyyran Rhee... they are bred as cattle for the undead to feed upon." He shudders. "Anyway... let's talk about something else. Huh. You'd think someone would have called for us by now, wouldn't you?"

Perhaps you were meant as a grand weapon, intended to fight the hordes of the dead continent... or maybe one of the lich kings forged you, to carry you forth as a weapon of conquest against the forces of the living... Or maybe it's just a fluke?

You ponder the possibilities for a while. You're quite surprised when you realize you've missed everything that happened in the Governess' mansion. Lindelasse and Merri are discussing the dragon scales, while Arcturus is discussing something with a bald, red-robed male human wizard.

"-ything were to happen, I'd sure want you and the sword watching my back," Merri says.

"As I said, I'll over you the better half of a 60-40 split," Linde bargains.

"It's a done deal, then." Merry grins, then she and Lindelasse pull off a fairly complicated handshake. Arcturus bows deeply to the red-robed wizard and walks over to Lindelasse. He addresses you.

"Sword, this is Councillor Orman Mendel with the Internation Guild of Mages. If you would be willing, we'd like to talk with you and Lindelasse about... well, you."

    What say you, /tg/?

This is obviously not the time nor the place for it, but we have figured out we can mind control things within 5 feet.

We should test this out further and see how far the mind control goes. The next time we pass by a common citizen, we should mind control him to run down the street about 100 yeards as fast as he can.

If we can develop this so that when our wielder attacks a sentient creature, he doesn't actually hit and we just mind control them, we could get a sizeable army quickly.

Linde draws you from the sheath with a small flourish. You're starting to get used to being flipped around. The elf offers you to the councillor, who takes you up admiringly.

"Yes... hmm... interesting... my, my..." Mendel mutters interestedly, looking down the length of your blade. He wields you with earnest at a chair, cutting it in two with little effort and frosting over the remains. "Very interesting!" he exclaims, then mutters an incomprehensible incantation. The chair is mended and rights itself as if it had never been bisected.

"What is the square root of one hundred, sword?" Mendel asks.

"Ten," you reply. the red-robed wizard strokes his chin thoughtfully. He sets you on a table and casts another spell on you. Finally, Mendel frowns. "Hm... I can't discern anything through magic... almost like..." His frown disappears, replaced with excited optimism. He hands you back to Lindelasse, who sheaths you. Mendel takes Arcturus aside for a moment, and they commune privately in a corner. Mendel's excitement seems to be contagious.

Lindelasse looks down at you inquiringly.

"Uh... you want to explain this to the sword who's been living in a pile of gold for three centuries?" you keen irritably.

Dude that has got to be the most awesome thing ever. It almost counterbalances being wielded by an elf.

While I'm sure you'd be happy talking about needledicks all day long, you're fagging up the thread.

    Arthas/Nerzhul, of course

As the three of you travel down the crowded merchant's road, you wonder to yourself just what it was you were made for... and then you stop. What does it matter, really, what you were built for? It's what you make yourself to be that matters in the end.

Just yesterday, you were sitting in the hoard of a green dragon. Now, you are a magical artifact, setting out on what is to be the rest of your existence.

    Kinda makes you think.

Not you can think anymore. Lindelasse has started skipping again.

    Goddamnit.
Well that's it out of me for tonight, I'll continue ArtifactQuest tomorrow. I'll stick around for a few minutes to answer questions, then it's to bed with me.

Dammit to hell. Elves will be elves, I guess.

When do you plan to start the next one?

Unfortunately, good with the writefaggotry, not so much the drawfaggotry here. tgchan seems to favor the dual approach.

Would a map (even a rough MSpaint sketch) of the surrounding geography of the region as described by Lindy be possible, either by the GM or some generous anon?
