Hello there, excuse me. Yes, you.

I need you to help me with something.

How do I stop this black-and-white sneak thief from breaking into my library and stealing my books? I know you love books yourselves, and imagine you might know some way to protect them.

Create a fake arcane library in the exact place of your normal library. Change the library somewhere else. Anyone who enters the fake library is stuck forever.
Or, stop being so asthmatic and learn to actually CATCH thieves.

You haven't had to endure THAT GUY until you've had to suffer someone who comes to your house every other day, high on mushrooms, just to bum out, ogle your miniatures, ask about whatever you're trying to read, mooch off your refrigerator, sleep on your bed, and try to steal some of your books before leaving.

And I have to bear with this because we're two of the only three nerds of our kind in the area.

There are some official comic printings written by ZUN and drawn by some other guy. Though I don't believe if they would peak your interest as if I remember correctly they are somewhat slice of life/joke based. Though feel free to make your own mind up at http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Touhou_Wiki . Frankly I just like browsing the bizarre back stories and odd facts section for the characters to find out things.

Yes. She's both the smartest fairy, the strongest fairy, and the one with the best memory. Most fairies can barely remember what they did a week ago. Cirno half-remembered stuff that happened sixty years ago - stuff that even motherfucking Yukari had half-forgotten already.

So really, Cirno's pretty impressive. She's practically building herself against all genetic chance.

There's a couple, but really, Touhou is more explained in the books (Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red, Perfect Memento in strict Sense) than comics.

However, for some little Touhou jokes by the author himself, you have Eastern Little Nature Deity and its related comics, which follow the life of three extremely low-tier prankster fairies. And then there's Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth, but if you haven't played Touhou 8 you won't understand shit there.

No, actually. The comics tell entirely different stories with the same characters. It's the difference between two books in the same series, basically. You can always read a bit of the Touhou Wiki to educate yourself on the characters, though.

    Silent Sinner in Blue

This one is about an very "just as planned" booze raid to the moon, orchestrated by Yukari. The story earns a bit of stick due to a pair of rather annoying Wesleys it introduces, but personally there is nothing else wrong with it.

Well, that's a bit of a problem lately, since Gensokyo.org's gallery of translated doujinshi is down. You could always use the torrent they made instead - it has EVERYTHING the gallery had, which includes a real fuckload of fan comics and most of the ZUN ones.

As for the books? Well, sorry, pal, but you're up shit creek with weights on your feet. The most you have is Touhouwiki's attempts at partial translations, which aren't exactly written as a miracle of prose, and in fact get a bit babelfish-y at a couple places, since people with a good domain of both moonspeak and English are really hard to come by. For example, here you can read the attempts at translating Curiosities of Lotus Asia, a book detailing the daily life of half-youkai (and only male with a speaking part in the series) shopkeeper Rinnosuke as many of the other characters pass by his store and either buy stuff from him, mooch stuf from him, or give him headaches.

Yes there is. Even if you ignore the Watatsukis' over nine thousand annoyance factor, the fact remains that the pace of the comic is seriously awful.

Touhou has what may be the most amazing fan community ever.

The games themselves are fun, and among the best of their kind out there. But where it really becomes epic is the fans. Massive amounts of fan art, fucking thousands of comics, hundreds of albums. And the vast majority of it of good quality, little of it is crap in my experience.

RIGHT! Making the names more general! I'll actually get on that this moment.

"Hat" is more of a stylistic choice, though. The example shown is that if you want to have Hat represent appearance, you could easily have a bunch of other design quirks--Byakuren would have a good Hat, represented by technicolor hair and floating ribbons.

Though as always, I'm not at all averse to changing anything against my ideas if enough people think it should be that way.

Well, as a fan myself, that's not quite true. We have or big, BIG share of shit. The difference is that many Touhou fans latch to and publicize the quality stuff and simply ignores the bad stuff, instead of the usual practice of obsessing over the bad examples, for purposes of bashing, that most communities practice. This makes bad things fade into obscurity pretty quickly.

Really, even in the games themselves, the games have great music. Yes, it's low-quality MIDI, but the melodies themselves are real fucking solid. It's one of the advanatges of chiptunes - you can't disguise bad music under MOAR VIOLIN, so you're forced to compose catchy shit by definition or suck. It's why Megaman games still have some of the best soundtracks ever. And it's also why when the fans then get and arrange them with instruments and vocals, you get absolutely fucking amazing.

Thats what I was saying. The music is kickass in all of them, its just that the few games that use real instruments sound fantastic.

midi itself is not low quality, only your playback device. With a proper synth midi is amazing, but most systems these days have shit-tier midi support.

in case you drop back into the thread, or other are interested in learning about Gensokyo, then apart from the wiki that allready have been linked, then there's some doujinshi which essentially is adaption of a games plot.

esamples are: Koumakyou part 1 and 2, by Tohonifu (the plot is actually that the big boss of the sixth game recreates the incident from that game to draw out Reimu and essentially perform an intervention for her sake and makes a reference to the plot in another doujin by the name Wriggle VS SDM)

Unofficial Gensokyo Guidebook by Gaku-touhou is more like a random trivia book which explains some of the references and source material in the book, broken up by short comics involving what's covered.

Two Scarlet Sacrements Under the Starry Sky by Flip Flops is an adaption of the plot from the sixth game,

    Hope it helps.

I was even more surprised that so many characters could fairly easily be translated in EQ2 when I started trying it out. >Fae Wizard with spiky blue wings and AA skill that turns all of your group's spells into cold damage. >High Elf Ranger/Alchemist with white braided hair. >Catgirl Necromancer. >etc

Games like Exalted and BESM were literally made for things like turning game/anime characters into PnP characters, though.

Integrity - Monk, canonically stated to be brutally strongwilled and stubborn.
Presence - SHE HAS SO MUCH CHARISMA SHE FUCKING *SHINES*. I'm not even kidding!
Resistance - Lady's a martial artist, and a damn good at that. Plus magic self-buffs outta the wazoo.

There are a lot that don't, actually. And even then, most of the doujins just make minor derailments for the sake of funny, but keeping the base tone of the setting - zany antics and funny.

But Tohonifun just turns perfectly lazy/gentle/normal characters into psychos. And as the whole "vs Yuka" series shows, they seem to be unable to actually DO any protagonist that isn't a psycho. Yukari? Psycho. Ran? Psycho. Remilia? Psycho (okay, this one is more canon-based). Reimu? Psycho with PTSD. Shou? Psycho. Byakuren? Psycho. Hell, even motherfucking Wriggle, though at least THAT one has a decent excuse and stuff.

It just gets kind of annoying, is all.

There's a difference between the usual "violent" that Gensokyo residents display and Tohonifun's signature "sociopath." Everything he's done with Yukari other than Yuka vs Yukari has done some off-the-wall retconning of how Ran and Yukari met, how the SDM crew met, and tons of other things. Tohonifun did well with Kaguya vs Mokou and Kaguya, they're established nutjobs; did well with Koumakyou, Reimu could theoretically snap under all the pressure she gets; did well with Wriggle vs SDM, lesser character get walked on frequently. But for Flan to be crazy before Remi locked her up for years at a time? For China to defend the vampires to the death before knowing them? For Yukari to meet Ran then leave her for years? That's nuts - totally against established history.

The whole point of Danmaku is that touhou characters can resolve problems without killing each other. There is also the issue that Gensokyo doesn't have a legal system or government, and the closest thing they have is Reimu. So non-lethal fights are about as good as it gets.

I hadn't read all of Tohoifuns' work, but ya, some of them doesn't really fit too well with the canon or usual fanon portrayal, some how ever feels, atleast in my case, pretty believeable for how things could be if the light-heartedness gets reduced and adds deepths to the characters that can be fairly believeable.

Koumakyou portray Reimu as how I can believeable see her acting after more then 10 incidents where she have been able to get a good ending and simple just want to live her lazy carefree life drinking tea, yet still have to do all her other monster killing off-screen against those who do not respect the spell-card rules despite not wanting to fight, because she is born what she is. and it does end up a happy note when it turns out that everything was a plot to make Reimu realise that she isn't alone and are more then the red-white shrine maiden.

offcourse, since it's all doujin work, then the beauty of it is that you can pick and choice the interprintation you like the must.

with that said, ya, Tohoifun might not be the best entry into gensokyo in hindsight, without having a rough idea of the plot and personality of the characters.

No offense meant, but... Psychotic, murderous behaviour doesn't add depth to a character. And people like Yukari (who is both the Paradigm of Laziness, a Trickster who prefers making you look like a fool to killing you, and pretty much Gensokyo's Guardian) suddenly being all MURDER YOUKAI PRIDE SILENCE I KILL YOU is everything *but* believable.

Let's not even get into the portrayal of Byakuren, who according to canon over the years has turned into a literal saint, and suddenly in Tohonifun she's all SUBMIT TO MY IDEA OR DIE NO WAIT ON SECOND THOUGHT DIE ANYWAY.

Really, I liked Wriggle vs SDM because it was halfway believable, and I liked Koumakyou because you could see it if you added just a little heap of grimdark to the characters' lives. But everything else by the circle is just... well, as away from canon as is humanly possible.

Hence why I said Tohonifun is very much not a good place to start people into Touhou.

See, I think everyone should realize touhou's pretty dark.

Look at EoSD. Youkai were either these half feral monsters who'd ambush you just to attack you, or intelligent being that could almost, but not quite, pass for human. Everyone threatened to eat Reimu left and right. When accused of murder, Reimu brushed it off by noting it was only one, so that was ok. Remilia responded to Sakuya's death by noting at least she got you to waste a bomb.

It's only later we learned it was a joke, and I perosnally think ZUN toned it down because of the fanbase he started to develop. But he still lets it bleed through. Mokou vs Kaguya is nothing but nightmare fuel. Yuyuko's story is a pretty solid tragedy. And there's plenty more.

Everyone who acts like touhou is all fun all the time just tends to ignore the evidence otherwise.

She's a judge of the afterlife, it is her job. She's just bring proactive.

Well, she's a god, so in terms of pure power she ranks up there. If we take Shoot the Bullet, she's quite capable of forcing a person to fight themselves.

Second of all, her power has been described as the ability to tell black from white: the ability to separate what she sees perfectly.

Now, look at Yukari's ability, the ability to bend and remove borders. What if Yukari fought someone who could make sure those borders stayed separated?

No, actually. Touhou never was horribly dark. Touhou is an interesting setting because everyone is a hair's width away from dark, where dark backstories happen, but where everything, despite the fighting, always has a happy ending and gets solved peacefully with a tea party at the end (a tea party which is also present in EoSD, by the way).

And it happens this way, simply, because ZUN's a happy drunk, not a depressive drunk, and there isn't anyone beyond redemption in canon Gensokyo - everyone can be good.

It has been said that the only "truly evil" character in Touhou is a tree. This theory is pretty approximately correct.

Now, hold on a bit. The nature of Gensokyo (vaguely defined and largely fleshed out by fanon) means that it can be exactly as grimdark or happy as you want it, so I think the whole debate on whether it absolutely is so and so noblebright/grimdark is useless, even if I'm taking it as silly fun wonderland for this game.

Well, Gensokyo will last quite a bit. and yes, when gensokyo is gone, they're both fucked. But then, so is everything else, really, as Gensokyo will probably last exactly as much as human civilization - it is fed from the fantasies of humans, after all.

So really, by then it's not a real setting or tone concern. For that to happen, the setting and its whole mood would have to be completely destroyed and turned into another thing completely. Kind of like what happened to Forgotten Realms in 4th, only to the power of n.

The portrayal of the youchrist just made me go "eh?" which is why I didn't suggested that one as opposed to Koumakyou (where Marisa even points out that Reimu is not being herself)

with that said, then I stand corrected and take back Koumakyou as a suggested introduction into Gensokyo. I n hindsight, really knowing who and what Reimu is, helps to get the must out of that one

Touhou power levels are super hard to estimate considering:
    1. You have characters who are powerful gameplay wise (Particularly hard to dodge danmaku, etc.)
    2. You have characters who have extremely powerful abilities. (Yuyuko can kill anyone instantly, Flan can crush almost anything, Remilia can control your fate, etc.)
    3. You have characters constantly and recklessly willing to use a lot of power. (The protagonists)

On the other hand, there are things limiting the strengths of characters, such as the Spell Card system, which some may be better at exploiting than others, or willingness to use full power. Then there's fanon as well: While Zun says Meiling is weaker than other youkai because she's "average at everything," fan speculation tends to latch onto the rather believable idea that she just sucks at danmaku. In pure freakish physical strength she could probably splatter many of the more powerful characters with her kung fu. Again, that's entirely fanon, but it at least opens the idea that some characters are stronger than they initially appear.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)18:15 No.8366783
    >>8366735

Well, it's not that she'd splatter many, but she'd be placed higher in the tiers. Why? Because a Mario-type character would undoubtedly be placed much better if she could use all her stats, instead of it being spellcard duels where the one with the biggest (Magic+Dodge) roll wins. For one, many gensokyans seem cripplingly undefended for melee...

I've seen threads that would belong in /jp/, /k/, /a/, /ck/ and /x/ discussed on here and in many ways I felt like the discussion atmosphere was not as volatile as it can be on some of those forums.

In the terms I'm REALLY EXCITED that you're using, Meiling would have average everything but a really crazy Hat.

And a certain Interaction which you have inspired me to make.

I had a theory around the time Immaterial and Missing Power came out.. Touhou magic is inversely proportional to breat size.. And considering Meiling had the second or third largest breasts.. and the least amount of magic, it made sense.

Although with Yukari and Komachi always being depicted with giant tits, that kinda threw it out the window.

Especially with Patchouli, she's supposed to have the strongest magic of anybody else in the whole verse, but due to physical weakness (Anemia, asthma, i've heard a lot of what it could be) she cant ever finish her spells.

    >(Anemia, asthma, i've heard a lot of what it could be)

The answer is d) All of the above. Yes, Pache is anemic AND asthmathic AND...

But on a good day, with her asthma not acting up too much, she can actually beat Suika in a duel.

No one can seem to decide whether Patchouli is huge or no-breasted. I mean, her clothing is like a huge striped robe so it's kind of impossible to tell.

Touhou definition of "beat the shit out of" is guaranteed to be non-fatal, due to the spellcard system that reimu shoves down their throats like a bad GM's self-insert character.

Also, on the topic of touhou music, even those with no interest in the games need this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-eensMhO_k

    /tg/ - /t/ouhou /g/ames

Really, most of /tg/ likes or just does not care about the silly hat girls. Just one or two really vocal sage fags.

That remix sounds like an last stage track of an Ace Combat game. Possibly one of the most epic reworkings of Bloom Nobly -- hell, of any Touhou song.

Eh... She lives in Heaven, and has control over the earth. In any event, to become a celestial that ascends to heaven you have to beat a shinigami which are gods so it is fair to place them at the same level.

Which really, is leads to the point that merely being a god isn't a direct sign of power. Touhou follows Shinto beliefs about gods, and while gods are often powerful, they aren't always and more importantly, it is possible for a non-god to surpass a god(often becoming divine in the process, but not always).

Wait what? i though you only needed to be removed from all wordly desires

At any rate, tenshi is the descendant of celestial, meaning she was born celestial, not climbed there herself

    >However, to become a celestial, humans must free themselves of worldly desires.

i dont see the word shinigami, you may be thinking about the fact celestial fight shinigamis to extend they lifespawn, something i dont think Tenshi has done at all
