You cease your struggles at the sound of movement, a shadowy form looming above you as you lie entangled in a web of dense polymer strands. Although you can't see it, you feel the construct's eyes upon you, regarding you with the same cold detachment that a lepidopterist might have for a pinned specimen. The sensation of helplesness is not a welcome one, the growing anxiety of your situation causing your wings to fidget despite yourself. Drone hisses defensively, keeping close between you and the impending threat.

Your name is Xeno, sole survivor of the science vessel Su'T'ji - for now, at least - and erstwhile servant of the necron lord known as the Lady of Infinite Abyss. Caught up in a conflict between the Lady and its treacherous lieutenant, the Dusk of Uncountable Suns, you were awakened from cryogenic stasis with no recollection of your past life and a breast full of cybernetic augmentation, repurposing you to your mistress sinister intentions.

Dispatched by the Lady to retrieve its dark materials, you now find yourself in the unenviable position of being cornered by what you presume to be a higher-order necron sentience - an impossibly ancient being, resurrected uncountable times over the course of millions of years, old before your race first crawled from the primordial ooze of your forebears.

'How very curious,' the unseen figure observes, carried closer on spidery, skeletal legs. 'Speaking of curiosity, you're curious about what happens after you die, right? Guess what? I know! You're going to find out first-hand before I can finish telling you, though, so I won't bother. I'll give you a hint: you're going to want to pack as much living as you possibly can into the next couple of minutes.'

    What do?

You feel an enormous hand encircle your ankles and pluck you from the web, holding you upside down - a rush of vertigo accompanies the sudden change in perspective as you find yourself face to face with the Weaver.

Although it resembles the necrons you've encountered, this one's configuration is wholly unique to the less complex warrior forms, resembling nothing so much as an enormous spider upon which its sculpted, skeletal torso sits. It turns you this way and that, optics whirring as it scans you.

'You serve the Lady,' it states emphatically, declaring a fact.

Weaver is broken, the glimmer of its mind fractured and corroded by millions of years of imperfect stasis and compounded by something else that you can't quite place. Something has been done to it by an immensely more powerful being - the Dusk, you suppose, or maybe even the Lady itself.

Whatever the case may be, the thin web of its psyche could be liked unto spun glass, delicate and fragile. There was beauty there, once - perhaps it was an artisan, chosen by its mistress to join it in immortality - but time and trauma has worn it away.

You realize that the Weaver may not be entirely rational. You should tread carefully.

Your knuckles whiten with strain as you hold tightly to the Weaver's cranial architecture, desperately trying to impose order on the chaotic swirl of memory and emotion being ruthlessly purged by the simple directive to restore functionality. Ghosts of past experience flicker before your eyes, of the joys of creation and beauty that the Weaver brought into the world - and of the soul-crushing loneliness that it endured to fulfil its Lady's desires. All these moments are swept away, lost like tears in the rain. You are losing her.

You slip free of your physical form as your consciousness plunges head-long into the Weavers,' a rush of information inundating you as you dive deeply into the fractured remains of its - no, of her personality. The words to describe it fail you, forcing you to think in terms of metaphor. A billion, billion slivers of porcelain swirl about and you pluck each one from the cybernetic ether and reassemble it with the care and attention that no artificial program could ever hope to match.

Time ceases to have meaning as you spend what seems like tireless millennia making her whole again. You come to know her intimately, a whole eternity of experience laid bare before you. All of her hopes and dreams and aspirations, everything that she is, is a part of you now, too.

She doesn't remember her name, you realize. She doesn't remember anything before she awoke as the Weaver, just a dim impression of an offer to outlive the stars themselves in eternal service to her beloved mistress. She accepted without hesitation.

You disengage from the stricken construct, a sense of elation suffusing you as you admire your handiwork. For the first time in a world's age, the Weaver is whole again.

The Weaver rises, optics whirring in calibration as she regains consciousness. She pauses to examine her hands, turning them over before her eyes with childlike wonder before she turns to face you.

'I... I am whole. Thank you, Xeno. You saved me from an eternity of emptiness, doomed to slowly slip into oblivion.

'I have to rest, now. It's been so long since I rested... but I want you to take this, first.'

She reaches down and holds open her palm, a staff appearing in it in a conflux of emerald luminescence. 'Take this. When the time comes, you'll know what to do with it.

'Do not be afraid of what comes next. You're so much more than you realize.'

With those final words, the Weaver curls in upon herself, spider-like scarabs disengaging from hidden docks across her abdomen to encircle the hibernating necron in a gauzy film of polymer cocoon. Their work done, her symbiotic drones return to their mother and join her in slumber.

You clamber free from the Weaver's web, spreading your wings and taking to the air above the pit in which she now slumbers. Any thoughts you may have harbored of blowing up the Su'T'ji fall to the wayside, unwilling as you are to harm the one who you so recently saved.

Having gazed into a necron's mind, you find that your perspective of them has changed. In the Weaver you found something of a kindred spirit, someone who had dedicated themselves wholly to the act of creation. The weapon which you now wield is proof enough of that, masterfully forged by an immortal artisan whose experience rivaled the skill of all the finest engineers of the Tau Empire.

If such a thing can embody such beauty, then perhaps there's hope for you, too.

The device itself, you recognize as a staff of light - the scepter with which necron lords rule over their deathless courts. The haft feels weighty and unfamiliar in your hands, intended for a being larger and more powerful than yourself. Thoughts of growing into it flit through your mind, of perhaps becoming the something more which Weaver spoke of.

The pit is silent now that Weaver has entered stasis with only the gentle thrumming of your wings to disturb it. You're unable to reconcile the vast space with the Su'T'ji's original configuration - no doubt, the ship's transformation has become quite dramatic, sharing more in common with a necron pyramid than the tau exploration vessel it was laid down as.

Thanks to your interface with the Weaver, you have a newfound familiarity with tombships of the sort the Su'T'ji is fast becoming - likewise, you are able to recall where your slumbering friend secreted away the remainder of the Lady's effects; a power core, resurrection orb and death mask. These artifacts would make whomever wielded them unimaginably more powerful - you can't allow them to fall into the hands of the Dusk, or the Lady if you still intend to avert her resurrection.

Of the Drone you dispatched to deck seven, there is no sign. The construct switched to stand-alone mode some time ago when it lost its connection to the greater hive mind shared between you, operating on its instructions to reconnoiter the area and remain out of sight. You can only presume that it's continuing to follow your instructions, but there is some small chance that it's been discovered.

The power core throbs with the contained power of a star, harnessed and given purpose to supplement the most powerful necron war-forms. You remember crafting it as if you'd done so with your own hands, although you know the memory of having done so is borrowed experience from the Weaver.

Likewise, the death mask is another masterpiece, meant to interface directly with your cranial components to augment and expand your awareness beyond even immortal standards.

Finally, the resurrection orb grants complete control over the bearer's necrodermis and that of the minions they command, allowing even the most catastrophic damage to be repaired in instants.

All three will be necessary in order to complete your ascension and they won't be easy to acquire - no doubt that the Dusk is looking for them already.

Weaver's memories of the two lords are hazy and indistinct. For the most part, she was never really a member of the Lady's inner court, serving her mistress best in her creative capacity. There were others among the Lady's court that Weaver was equally distrustful of, but only the Dusk made an overt play for dominance by withholding support at a key moment in a battle against the hated eldar.

Without the Dusk's warrior, the Lady was cornered and defeated by an eldar farseer, forcing her armies to retreat to the safety of their tomb world. With her physical form shattered beyond repair, the Lady was forced to enter prolonged stasis with one last command to her loyal Weaver - make the Dusk suffer for his actions.

Death Mask should allow us to have free access to the ship computers and superior hacking abilities.

You decide to find the Lady's resurrection orb first, figuring that at the very least you can keep it out of anybody else's hands. The thought of using it to animate fallen necrons seems somewhat distasteful, somehow... especially since you can put their necrodermis to much better use by incorporating it into yourself.

Since we are fighting in small corridors I suggest something like this with ability to climb walls and cellings and armed with taucron guns. Traditional Necron Warriors are to clumbsy.

Uh, no. All necrons were once living creatures. Then they met the C'tan. And the C'tan were all like "Yo dudes, I heard that you're average lifespan is about 30 years and life is shit, so here's what I'll do: You'll get to live forever with these awesome metal bodies and you'll do whatever I say." And they did it. Every necron was once a member of that race.

According to the Codex (which has different fluff than the 5th Ed rulebook we seem to be following) the Necrontyr approached the C'tan first. I don't remember which god they found in their home system's star, though.

If the necrontyr were able to give the c'tan their undying bodies, why didn't they do it for themselves right from the start?

Are you fucking kidding me? That's what they're saying now? Wait, no, you're right. I remember something about them contacting the spirit of their sun and that being the first C'tan or something back in the old 'dex too. Either way, I'm going to be cantankerous and take an instant dislike to the new 5th edition version. Those bastards.

the actual written fluff of the day the necron'tyr became necrons is truely epic, but I can't share it for my codex is on a different continent than I.
