The resurrection orb pulses in time with your phylactery as you hold it out before you, twisting your mechanical hand this way and that to better examine the new addition to your rapidly ascending form. The spherical artifact seems to have passed right through your palm to form a semitransparent lense, flickering with inner fire. You can feel the power it contains as an extension of yourself, supercharging every single nanite that constitutes your body with amazing regenerative capacity.

You are Xeno. Before, you were the sole survivor of an ill-fated expedition to explore necron ruins and recover ancient artifacts; now, you are much, much more. Reluctantly drafted into the service of a necron lord known as the Lady of Infinite Abyss, you have slowly shed your organic weakness to become an immortal in your own right, finally casting off the last vestiges of your tau body in a recent battle with the minions of the Dusk of Uncountable Suns - the usurper that seeks to claim the Lady's power as his own.

Though you're no longer tau, you haven't been subsumed by the soulless undeath that afflicts the rank and file of your necron adversaries, nor the madness of their leaders. With the help of your loyal scarab, Drone, you've endured every imaginable assault on the purity of your soul and come through unscathed, stronger even. In your heart of hearts, you know that the sacrifice you've made has been worthwhile, granting you the power to end the threats posed by both the Dusk and the Lady here and now.

With the resurrection orb in your possession, two more artifacts of the Lady's effects remain to be retrieved; a death mask and power core, each of which will prove to be essential in the final conflict. Of the two, the power core lies closest to your current location in the well of souls - a resurrection chamber deep in the heart of the tomb ship your science vessel, the Su'T'ji, is rapidly becoming.

    What do?

You alight upon the obsidian floor, the Weaver's staff of light materializing in your hands as your fingers close around its ephemeral shaft. The weapon feels more natural to you now, perhaps as a result of your completed transformation, but its true potential remains locked until you can acquire the power core to boost your own abilities.

Your network-sense keeps you apprised of your surroundings and in tune with the tomb ship around you. Practically nothing of the Su'T'ji remains, consumed by the Dusk of Uncountable Suns' voracious nanomachines to fuel their industry. An errant process leads to a millisecond of wonder, if perhaps the ship's identity is still as intact as yours... but you doubt it.

The Dusk's minions are out in force, scouring the ship for the last of the Lady's artifacts. Their precise positioning is hidden from you, but you can feel the data chatter of their incessant wireless communication like a dull buzzing in the background.

    Roll 1d100.

You slip into an alcove between two immense pillars of black stone, shutting down all but your most basic systems. The thrum of your phylactery falls silent as the emerald glow of your various conduits darkens and goes out. Your thought processes slow, diminished by your semi-idle state as you fall as still as a statue, obscured by the enveloping shadows of your hiding place.

The immortals pass, three of them in lock-step, moving with a singular purpose. You recognize them as the warrior-forms that nearly destroyed you, facilitating your unexpected rebirth in the well of souls.

One of them bears a distinctive energy pattern about it, localized around its right leg; it doesn't take much processing power to recognize that it must have crushed your gauss carbine underfoot.

Your hand lashes out with the speed of a firing piston, seizing the barrel of the necron's weapon in a death grip and levering it around with all of your not inconsiderable might! The immortal is lifted clear off the floor, thrown into its fellows with a resounding clatter of colliding metal. The three warrior-forms fall in a tangled heap, struggling to extricate themselves and granting you some breathing room.

The resurrection orb, so recently acquired, glows brightly as your fingers close as if to grasp an unseen force, pulling back as you draw the necrodermis from your stricken foes. They disintegrate before your eyes in a swirl of silver mist that flows into your palm, throbbing green light seeping from between your panels as your body courses with energy!

Your reserves are flush with raw material with which to improve yourself or construct additional drones, the latter of which causes your fabrication armatures to twitch in anticipation. Although you're hard pressed to describe it, the act of creation is almost... serene. Given the time, you imagine you could indulge in it for hours, perfecting each scarab and imbuing it with life... unfortunately, you don't have the time to indluge in such a luxary right now.

The necrodermis you've absorbed can easily be repurposed to enhance your existing characteristics or to develop new ones - incorporating a weapon system into your forearm, for instance, or molecular disruptors in your fingertips. Even augmenting your wings for greater speed and airborne agility is an option, one which holds a certain appeal considering your close kinship with Drone.

You kneel, bracing your hands against the floor and leaning forward so that your wings can reach their full extension, stretching wide across your shoulders to reveal the heart of your inner workings. The pulsation of your phylactery picks up in tempo, building to a steady surge as nanomechanical constructors assemble across the surface of your antigravitic vanes and set about their work.

The feeling is difficult to describe, not painful but not altogether pleasant, either. Pressure builds as the complex structures of the delicate mechanisms are broken down and reassembled, enhancing their performance and durability. To your augmented mind, you perceive each nanite as it is broken down and incorporated into your body, locking in place to form the larger structures of your form.

The process concludes as power flows into your wing vanes, oscillating rapidly in place to allow you to fly free. You lift off the ground, levitating for a moment before allowing your hooves to touch down.

Your new specifications scroll through your mind, speed and agility comprehensively enhanced, but the process has cost too much raw material to undertake another upgrade now.

The shadowlight is nearby, its vast circular chamber looming through a cyclopean portal. Your wings carry you rapidly into the chamber, but as far as you're able to perceive it's completely empty! Lofting higher, you make a circuit of the room, banking around its circumference for any sign of the power core you seek.

Without any indication of its presence, you come to land near the center of the room - but as your hooves touch down, a stone slab slides silently across the ingress, sealing you in!

Beams of blinding light criss-cross the chamber, but you stand your ground as they trace increasingly complex patterns in the air surrounding you. An effect not unlike persistence of vision begins to grant the rapidly resolving shapes a sort of solidity and before your very optics, you find yourself transported to another time and place.

All around you, a desloate wasteland stretches in every direction. Ruined towers of basalt and obsidian crumble behind you, the light gone out of the channels cut into their mirror surfaces. Bodies lie strewn across the battlefield, mostly necron but also a variety of colorfully attired organics, close-fitting suits of composite armor and impact-reactive mesh torn asunder by gauss blasts or matter-disrupting talons.

A lone figure stands before you, resplendent in a suit of bone-white armor and black robes, its haughty countenance failing to mask its uncertainty at the outcome of the conflict. Finally, it speaks.

'Your reign ends here,' it lilts, raising a blade swirling with otherworldly energies. It hurts to look upon it, the strange properties of the weapon preventing you from conducting n accurate analysis. 'In the name of Ulthwé, I shall return you to the infinite abyss you so adore.'

You reach out with your resurrection orb, seizing your severed parts although they lie nearly a meter beyond your reach; the gesture causes them to collapse into a cloud of silver, swirling about of their own accord and reassembling in their proper configuration, firmly reattached! You have just enough time to roll out of the way of your attacker's next blow, a cleaving strike intended to split you down the middle, but you remain on the ground.

You hold the power core aloft, pondering the implications it represents... but after giving it due consideration, you conclude that the reward far outweights the risk.

All the same, you have Drone back up your most recent mnemonics... just in case.

The core slips into you its socket, clicking into place as if the two components were designed for each other and for a moment, nothing happens. You wonder if maybe it's broken, but the thought has scarcely buffered when a surge of energy roars through you! Every channel and conduit becomes irridescent with energy as your body reflexively reconfigures to handle the increased output. The core fuses to your phylactery, forming a codependent bond.

The surge courses down your arms and focuses in your hands, arcs of energy dancing between your fingers as they curl into offensive claws. Each digit terminates in a long silver talon, its edged blurred with molecular agitation with which to disrupt solid matter. A simple flex retracts the claws again, returning your fingertips to a somewhat less threatening configuration.

Let's improve our drone production. This will allow for quantity and lots of back ups.

    We shall be the Swarm!

Also, can we tear into Necron/ship architecture to store up on raw material for Drone production?

do a scan of the archive for the info we're interested in. what with having the power core and the orb now, I'm willing to believe that we're going to have company soon, so we should get what we need from it now.

Yeah. I'm sorry, I'm just a bit frustrated. Everyone goes crazy for the Mistress of the Undying Swarm shtick and is so quick to abandon our humanity (Taumanity?), and then we get the option to actually do something that would fit with it and people just go with more shit for us. WE HAVE A STAFF OF LIGHT ALREADY. WE HAVE A MELEE WEAPON THAT COMES BACK TO US WHEN WE LOOSE IT. WE DON'T NEED CLAWS!. It doesn't help that we haven't been making anymore scarabs, which further makes our title seem completely unfitting.

    >>8501778
    So what?
Three people went for it, and it's not like there's never going to be another upgrade ever again. And it's not like you won't enjoy it anyway.

Agree. This was a waste of an upgrade. Instead of something useful like a Stealth generator, a Secundary Power core, a Drone Upgrade or an upgrade to prevent mindcontrol we chose a redundant meele upgrade!!!!!

    >>8501881
And we might as well start now, since more scarabs=more eyes out to perform spot checks, more meat shields, more attacking force, an ability to split up when we need to go after multiple thing (hey, just like what we're doing now!). What can these claws do? Slice things. Gee, if only we had a weapon that do that kind of thing. Oh wait, we DO! The Staff of Light. Now I'll admit, it probably can't slice things, but it's still a power weapon if memory serves, and is pretty potent in its own right.

I'm guessing you gave us the claws because they'll be needed later. We'll also be able to deal devastating punches to the faces of our enemies.

But we also want those drone upgrades, think of possible options to give us!
    >> Anonymous 03/10/10(Wed)01:01 No.8501962
Betcha all that some idiot decides to try and fuck something up with these new claw we have when anything else would have been a better option, rolls 90+, and gets us totally pwnd. Again.

Well, to be fair, we've been discussing about arm integrated weaponry every since we laid eyes on the prototype Tau gauss carbine. And it's not like we can't make more drones out of the Dusk minions that we'll eventually come across.

Yes, but of all the inbuilt weapons, why a melee one? When we already have one? And I wasn't talking about more drones, I meant some kind of upgrade for them. Something that maybe the power core had stored in it that could be integrated into them.

But what's done is done, and I guess I should probably stop bitching about it.
