    Plane/tg/uardians...

We all agree that Samus Aran is badass as hell and could all-too-easily fit into 40K like a Slaaneshi servant's tentacle in a schoolgirl's anus, but that is not why I mention her. After all, I'm sure there's a dozen different Warhammer statblocks for the Chozo-armored battle-goddess out there already.

    Instead, I challenge you thusly...

Stat her, both in and out of the suit, for other systems. Whether tweaking the suit to be magical for a fantasy campaign, or Science!-based hoodoo for a superhero game, or whatever, I don't care... just do it.

Why? Well, I just wanna see if you CAN, to be honest. I've seen metric assloads of Samus-in-40K stuff here and elsewhere... but virtually nothing at all otherwise. And if anyone could pull it off, it'd be you brillian/tg/uys.

I could do it in GURPS. But you have to decide, do I evaluate her in a serious tone and build her along those lines, or is she a video game character and designed along THOSE lines?

Each has serious tone differences and GURPS can only realistically and accurately depict one at a time.

I did it once before in in Mutants and Masterminds because i love metroid so much

based it of the Metroid Prime verson, so you just use the alternate power for the beam and change the damage type.
however, if your going to stat Samus out of the suit, you have to remember that the baseline stats are still at peak human level: she's jumping 20 ft and denting steal regardless of the power armor.

mostly its the interaction of her health system, her ammo pickup and her MASSIVE plot armor.

I saw a distinct difference between her original 8-bit style of play and her more recent iterations. Theres a trend now to make it less cartoony and more realistic.

I shall endeavor to make her most recent iteration a GURPS character though. It should be an interesting exercise

    >mostly its the interaction of her health system, her ammo pickup and her MASSIVE plot armor.

Not sure if I get you. The suit IS motherfucking impossibly tough - it's part of why she can take armies by herself. The health bar is an abstraction for the player, yes, but the fact that her shields can take a big fucking railgun round straight-on with only partial damage isn't.

As for ammo... ammo really doesn't apply. The energy reactor her beam uses is pretty much self-sufficent and runs on Chozo Uberhandwavium, and doesn't really run out until the suit itself goes online.

The hell? She can't really take on armies, unless taking them on 1-3 at a time counts... which isn't exactly unusual. Though it'd be fucking sweet if you could try.

Soulbow, with the Psionic Shot feats, gives you an infinite ammo blaster weapon that can be customized in various ways and charged up for extra damage.

The laser you get from Warlock is much less cool, but also get infinite Detect Magic for the Scan Visor, and some huge bonuses to jumping and tumbling.

Neither of which are really planet-destroying war goddesses.

    >>8545323

No, I meant in fluff. In-game, you fight them three-on-one or so, six-on-one tops because, hell, the player is only human and that'd be mean and horrible game design, especially on a game that's more about exploration than about combat.

But Samus, as a character, does mow down veritable squads, with odds of like what, forty-on-one? and wins handily enough to go for the next squad subsequently. Things like that are why quite a few people in-universe don't actually believe she exists - because *obviously*, nobody could do that kind of shit.

Basic Power/Charge Beam assumed to be charged-particle, with other variations being alterations of the charge and/or particle type.- Wave Beam being electrified ion-clusters, Ice Beam being thermally-negative energy-pulse, Plasma Beam being, well, high-temperature plasma. Missles and Morph Ball still unexplained - suspect subspace "pocketing" may be involved.

lasers would be coherent over range like what we see, but move far too quickly. plasma globbules /should/ spread over distance if all they are doing is moving in the transmitted direction, so they'd lack the range we see but have the right speed.

a plasma glob that's doing weird helical crazy motion along the way might be coherent, it's messy exciting physics.

Samus is a big girl outside of the suit, but the Morph Ball is tiny- and in Prime, at least, the transformation happens in an explicitly non-mass-conserving way.

The suit can convert matter to energy and back again.

That's how every single piece of weapons technology from every single species in the known universe is able to integrate seamlessly into her suit. The suit deconstructs the physical mechanism of how the weapon works, and then rebuilds it as part of the arm cannon.

As far as the suit and the Chozo are concerned, there is no difference between act of performing a task, and the tool that is designed for it.

Samus' blaster is Destruction. That's how it works.

The Morph Ball isn't really THAT small, only about one meter across, roughly half the height of a standing adult human, and it is physically feasible for an exceptionally agile person to maneuver themselves into such a small space - the suit's adaptive nature "re-forms" around them (as noted by the fact the ball changes as the suit does) as they do so. The "inner glow" is a sort of gyroscopic forcefield, allowing the ball to be controlled without loss of equilibrium.
    >> balthazarr !!cm88o03MYrr 03/12/10(Fri)12:39 No.8545776
The character generator was having a wacky-ass time exporting data, as I am on my netbook, Im not surprised this happened.

But that's her in a basic nutshell. The advantages with 0 point cost are granted by the suit, which itself, is signature gear indivisible from her as a person. Her basic blaster acts as the plasma rifle, and her grenades are similar in type to the plasma model. As an extra thematic note, her rifle takes up the use of her arm, and she is mostly immune to her own grenade damage. All in all, the suit provides the majority of her strength and speed while her skill and acrobatic talents make up the rest.

Seeing how hard it is to put anything from the metroid universe in comparison with almost any other universe due to the limited information we get on how exactly the stuff works

Thats why I'd love if there was some kind of RTS or RPG based on the metroid universe where we get explained what the heck is going on

Summary for people who don't know Spirit of the Century

Aspects can be any cool thing about your character. You get fate points for roleplaying according to your aspects when it's really not in your best interests. If you can tie an aspect into an action you perform, you can spend a fate point for a huge bonus.

Skills work exactly like you'd expect.

Stunts are special skill-related deals. The three I picked are +2 to athletics involving fitting through tight spaces, perform complex feats while moving, ignore lots of terrain when moving from place to place in a combat, and stuff to let her get that power armor.

Armored makes something very hard to damage, especially if it has lots of stress boxes. Rugged adds two stress boxes, meaning the power armor has 7. That's more than most characters.

The power beam and morph ball are fairly self-explanatory. Craftsmanship (athletics) means +1 to athletics. Note that she already has Superb (+5) athletics, so this brings her up to Fantastic (+6). When fitting through tight spaces, the morph ball and contortionist kick in, bringing her up to +10. If she invoked "How the hell did she get there?" that'd be +12. Note that the scale tops out at +8 (Legendary).

My understanding, based on the fragments from the series and wild speculation:

The bulk of the Metroid universe uses standard science fiction principles. Standard man-portable technology is good enough for powered armor and particle weapons. Large battleship-sized technology tops out at manipulating gravity.

There exists rare and experimental technology that goes outside of those boundaries. The big experimental trend is setting up electromagnetic containment fields to fling packets of whatever the hell - the other bounty hunters use this to fling around plasma, supercooled gas, and the like. This technology is rare because it is experimental, but in a few years it might become the normal. Unlike 40k (and many settings, really), the Metroid universe is a brief snapshot in time, and technology is still advancing rapidly. For example, gravity generators that are only present on large ships in the Prime series are being experimentally used by the helicopter-sized Nightmare by the time of Fusion.
    >> SquashMonster !!YzKAMLHEhyW 03/12/10(Fri)17:48 No.8550103
    >>8550092
The Chozo reached our current level of experimental technology ages ago, and their ancient artifacts are still useful enough to be of military concern. Their technology stopped advancing shortly after this though, and they moved to develop spiritually instead. Some time relatively recently, the Chozo discovered a sort of "life energy," which is a technology so advanced that it sounds like spiritualism to us.

The Chozo updated most of their technology to use this life energy: they made power armor powered off of it with visors that allow one to see the remnants of life energy floating by newly deceased foes. They made a beam weapon that shoots blasts of life energy. They engineered the metroid species to drain life energy. Because the Chozo stopped developing technology not long after they reached the rest of the universe's current level, and because the Chozo all either died or ascended soon after discovering life energy, this technology is very similar in form to the rest of "modern" tech, despite using vastly more advanced mechanisms and power sources.

The chozo ability to transform anything into pure energy is more of a like transhumanist singularity. Metroid can take on a theoretically infinite amount of enemies, because she can replicate shields and weaponry from life and materials. This is shit that would be god-level technology in Eclipse Phase, let alone Metroid's (mostly grounded) universe.

Samus' gear is infinitely more advanced than anything anybody has in the series. It adapts itself exactly to what she needs and what is around her. If her gear appears as weak as the weapons of those around her, that's only because the suit hasn't decided she needs better yet, and assimilated new technologies.

This is the true Samus to me.

She needs a 1980s style hairdo to fit into 40k properly. That way, she'll fit into 40k better than some of the later additions too.

According to the developers behind Super Metroid, Samus is visually based on Kim Basinger, and the original plans for her death animation and ending scene in that game included brief nudity. Also her B-W-H measurements in centimeters are 106-60-90, she has a birthmark whose location only the director knows... and one of the graphic designers claims she's actually a shemale, but we're pretty sure he's joking about that one.

Heh. That'd be cool. Federation vs Pirates vs... what?

In /v/, though, we usually prefer to daydream about a Dwarf Fortress/Dungeon Keeper style game from the perspective of the pirates. You have to plan your bases and defend them from the hostile lifeforms, the Federation, your own experiments blowing up (frequent occurence), and random bounty hunters.

And then, the final stage would be Samus finally arriving, and you trying to delay her as much as possible while hauling ass away, because the Hunter cannot be stopped.

He does have one point amidst of that, though - Samus's suit seems to have a way to recharge energy from her slain enemies, somehow. And a downright absurd ability to absorb technology easily. The "mass to energy and back" thing might not be that farfetched, really...
