I've had one, actually.

Kazuki Kita was a fighter pilot. He was cryogenically frozen after the Earth was invaded by aliens. He was later revived as the last hope of humanity.

This, for the most part, involved bringing a fighter jet to a giant robot fight. Which, admittedly, he was damn good at.

His arc was that the thing about soldiers is that they had to have the right to stop being soldiers - he was looking for his brother, who had vanished in the days before the world went to hell. Apparently, the alien forces used his mind as the code for their AIs, copied over and over.

He served on board a carrier, the Steel Dragon, sort of the guardian of the party. Also an AI, he thought, and he sort of distrusted her.

Until eventually he learned she was an admiral hooked up to a tube on life support, unable to rest until the war was finally completed.

Which, you know, one day it was. Kazuki shot down the enemy's final last-ditch attempt, the forces of humanity saved the day, and "ROCK AND ROLL!" was shouted very, very loudly.

And then neither Kaz or the Dragon had anywhere to go. Kaz retired to the ruins of Tokyo, starting a little farm out in an abandoned lot near his apartment.

And the dragon, well, flew away into space, an ancient admiral sailing out in a steel coffin, systems shutting down.

Kaz accompanied her in his ship out past Mars, wordless.

Then he turned around and went back.

Fuck you Cthulhu, while on a pirate campaign my Dwarf veteran threw himself at the lovecraftian beast that had killed all his friends and ruined his life and sanity. Restored my honor by throwing myself at equivalents to the devil in the hope of lopping off a toe.

Some bitter sweet stuff too. Had a character called Radiation Man. My aim with this character was to make a character who had the worst life ever and was over the top Ronery. Set in the 1860s, an experiment by a man of SCIENCE! way ahead of his time. Made the guy green and radioactive, able to send out radiation at a great rate to a lesser rate but always radioactive. Ended up kill his family with cancer. Had a special cage on wheels to stop the radiation, robots to bring me food. Scientist dies and Radiation Man decides to live a life of loneliness. Campaign starts, organization of superhumans is formed and drags me in with the rest of the party by way of "If you don't, we will shoot you" and we go on adventures, with my guy always being SO RONERY. My role was to order my robo-servants around and if things got really bad the rest of the party'd retreat, I'd walk in a flood the place with radiation. Due to always being so ronery he's not a lot of fun to be around, but the female speedster thought he was kind of sweet. His most used line was "All I want is a hug..." which became a sort of long running joke as I tower over the body of some mook I flooded with radiation. So at the end of the campaign we're on the BBEG aliens mothership that was trying to destroy Earth, we're at the helm but alien scoutships are docking and are going to retake it. We only know how to move it forwards and we decide to CRASH IT INTO THE SUN. As we descend to our fiery deaths the female speedster enters my little cage and hugs me. I burn in her embrace. Radiation Man got his hug, the alien invasion is halted and then he burns.

I suppose that tragic ends make me cry more. I don't know if it means more that way. Also a tragic accidental TKP of your group isn't always meaningful lol. I suppose it depends on who the tragedy happens to within the story.

Sometimes things being tragic just piss me off, like cool characters being killed off or taken away. (ex. Oz from Buffy, Kamina from Gurren Lagann, your relatively interesting dad in Fallout 3, Wash in Serenity, King Cailan and Duncan in Dragon Age, L from Death Note)

I tend to avoid stories which I know will end badly simply because I know that I could get depressed when a character I connect with disappears.

I will say that a character enduring hardship and some tragedy before succeeding makes their struggle more meaningful. If they die for it, it just makes me focus more on why they didn't live.
