Since the first thread was full of massive win, let's have a second one.
/tg/ is often... obsessed with video games. But there are a LOT of GOOD video games from further back than /tg/ usually discusses. Like this wonderful gem. I doubt any of you could guess where its from, and if you did discover it, you wouldn't believe it.

But lets have a thread about some of the great old games. And I mean old. Like before 95.

I beat that game without even realizing it. After I got a stable population/air/food ratio going, I just built several labs and researched. Eventually I was looking at the build menu to see if anything new had popped up, and there was a spaceport. I put it on the surface, waited a few turns, and victory was mine.

    Such a sense of achievement.

The Killing Game Show (aka Fatal Rewind) here, doing time shenanigans in platformers before your "Sands of Time" offspring.

(Admittedly, it was a demo-recording like thing that meant you could fast-forward through your previous attempt at the level and then take over at the point just before you made the fatal mistake, rather than rewinding. But it had an incredibly cool intro, cyberpunk plot, and was bastard hard.)

    Some questions regarding Loom.

I like Adventure games, but there are some aspects that are simply obnoxious and I'm wondering if Loom has any of them.

    - Can't win condition, I don't like Adventure games where you if you fuck up you've irrevocably lost, this is why I enjoyed Monkey Island and didn't like Dark Seed
    - Pixel searching, you've got to point the mouse over a single fucking pixel to find something, this is why I didn't like Beneath a Steel Sky
    - Almost retarded puzzles, A bit of Monkey Island 2 had this problem and some of it was such bullshit (monkey on pipe what?). But god the writing was excellent.
    >> Anonymous 03/24/10(Wed)23:33 No.8771458
Series that I grew up playing and still dust off when the nostalgia strikes:
Bard's Tale (3 is kinda weak. Went for 'you're going to kill a god' epic, just turned into a WTF powergame near the end)
Ultima (THERE WERE ONLY 7! ONLY 7!!)
Eye of the Beholder (Again, 3 was the weak link, because it wasn't Westwood. 2 gives me wood to this day.)
Wizardry (Nintendo Hard and campy to boot. What's not to love?)
Gold Box games (Can't think of any outright bad ones, though Pools of Darkness and Dark Queen of Krynn were meh at best)
    >> Anonymous 03/24/10(Wed)23:36 No.8771488
Dune II was the shit back in the day, especially when you look back on it through extra-thick nostalgia goggles.

None that I can recall, though I do remember a spot or two that it's easy to get stuck in for a long time because you didn't stand in the right spot to trigger an event.
    >- Pixel searching
None. Everything is solved by combination of music notes as spells, which cause things to happen.
    >- Almost retarded puzzles
Some are very easy, others take a bit of thought to solve. Several even have multiple ways to solve it. None will leave you scratching your head going "What the fuck kind of sense was that supposed to make?" or require huge leaps or total suspension of logic.

Robinsons Requiem was pretty interesting. It's somewhere between an Adventure RPG sandbox sim. You play a Robinson, a scout dropped on planets to evaluate their habitability. You are versed in every survival technique, and after your tour of duty ends, you will be a very rich man. However, this tour is different. Before they dropped you off, you uncovered a secret plot to get rid of Robinsons who have become problematic, normally because they contracted dangerous diseases during their tour of duty. Those Robinsons are dropped on a planet so feral that it becomes their last mission. But before you can blow the whistle, you get your new assignment. Guess where they drop you...

...I honestly can't remember any others from before 1995. My dad was cheap, and all I would get was a wall of shareware demos.

It wasn't UNTIL 1995 that I started getting games that were good and not-pirated, if only because my father couldn't burn CD-Roms back then.

Mechwarrior 2 and Dark Forces were my two first REAL PC games, both created during that limbo time between MS-Dos and Windows 95 that made games so hard to run.

There was an excellent piece called Quartex which came with the DIGIT Tracker demo on the Atari ST. I am surprised that the Internet has almost completely forgotten it. (Disk images are out there.) It's extra annoying that it's in a propritary format and I can't get into something standard to throw at MikMod or ModPlug to get better quality than the hissy emulated Yahama DSP hackery. :/

Since there are a great many 16-bit-era types around, maybe you can help me remember a piece of Atari ST software which was sort of a game, sort of a simulation toy; think RoboCode, if you know that, but with more too it and less Java.

It was a little bit Conway's Game of Life: you had little robotic life forms, and you could plop them down in a maze of your design, which could have food in it, and the robots could be assigned to coloured teams. The robots themselves were built from simple logic gates, up to the complexity of flip-flops for simple memory, and the usual array of sensors and movement widgets: I think they could fire bullets at opposing teams too. Their appearance was based on a scaled-down version of their circuit board.

This thing has been rattling around in my brain for ages, and even if I could get anywhere near the old ST in storage, the chance of finding the right disk is tiny. It would be awesome to dust off the concept and give it a new lick of paint.

I'm trying to give the matter some serious consideration now. Sam & Max's opposition were somewhat goofy for the role. Sludge Vohaul made Ripburger look smalltime, but I think missed the sheer depth of streak of executive malice. The Kings Quests mostly had DERP DERP EVIL WIZARD. Malcom and The Hand from the Legends of Kyrandia weren't particularly great. LeChuck is pretty good, but perhaps a little too incompetent. I'm not sure who else could---ah.

In a game where you hire top mercenaries from around the world to work for you, this guy works for 55$ a day and comes with a unique weapon, an electric hedge trimmer.

They call him unusually ruthless Reuban.
Ruthless because he killed his whole family with a hedge trimmer. Unusually because he had to recharge it twice before he was finished.

Second Z was ok. At least it was somehow original in terms of gameplay, although the idea was pretty stupid and game-ruining.

...would you /want/ one? That was one of the swarm of quick "me too" RTSes in the wake of C&C. I've got a boxed copy somewhere and gave up on it and went back to C&C's bonus missions soon after the first level IIRC.

Pic related. Cheesiest exploit in the world.

Haha. Z was sorta cool, but ways too hyper for its own good, IMO. KI also sucked.

KKnD had Crabs and Earth 2140 had a decend KI for your own units. You could also play a democratic Nation that went all Terminator, all the time. And that rocks.
