Likewise towns in the Shadowfell are already twisted and decayed ruins stalked by nightmares. What happens after the collapse when the nightmares the Shadowfell mirrors have actually happened and are long gone?

Better question is why they're still active in the first place in an apocalyptic world.

Fossil fuel and nuclear power plants wouldn't run without human input, and they have no signs of being self-powered by solar cells or wind turbines.

I always thought Gensokyo would make a decent Mount Olympus style home of the gods, where all the touhous were just deities among their kind, or among groups of people. Mystia would be deity (or just ruler) of the night sparrows, which I imagine to be an evolved form of harpy with more song powers.

Characters like Reimu or Sanae would have started out as humans and taken the interest of established members of the pantheon enough that they were elevated, and now serve as guardians of the human race (since gods friendly to humans are vastly outnumbered by the unfriendly ones). Marisa would have stolen her place in the pantheon, of course, although she'll insist she's just borrowing it.

For the world setting, then, you can take Gensokyo and expand it. Human Village becomes Human Kingdom - surrounded on all sides by either untamed magical wilderness, a kingdom ruled by vampires, and the mountainous region inhabited by the flying monsters among others.

I figure she just takes damaged traffic signs from isolated country roads nearby or something, she may put them back after, who knows.

It's also worth considering is there are people in her subway train spellcard or if it's danmaku designed to look like a subway train. The idea of people seeing a momentary flash of a fight between two young girls while passing through a tunnel is amusing.

I've always liked the setting more or less as it is, a haven for creatures of faith and dreams who were growing weak in a world dominated with science and fact. And then beyond these places, if a group is lucky or good enough to survive, they might reach the court of the daughter of the moon, or the netherworld, or they might have to travel deep underground to save the world from nuclear fusion.

Take out the spell card system and unlimited powers - those are only used by the gods to ensure they don't destroy all creation. Then you have a setting with pretty much unlimited potential, and could run virtually any system or type of adventure there.

I like the idea of this character as a recurring enemy. Your first meeting is when you're hired to stop the unseasonable cold in an area. You meet her, she attacks you right away. If you win, the cold goes away and you can go ahead on your way.

Later, the ice fairy seeks you out for revenge. "I'm stronger than I was before!" From there you have comical options (like her being exactly the same as before, or slipping on icy ground and starting to cry) or you can play it as she said: she's stronger and she has a chance of beating the group.

Then there's Lily White, who announces every spring with a shower of danmaku. And the humans don't appreciate it as houses are destroyed, fields are ravaged, and mayhem and destruction follow her path (which changes from year to year, so they can't predict it).

it's not uncommon for Yukari to lose fights from time to time, she's not some power house melee machine like Suika or Yuka. Yukari was never meant to be a direct power kind of character, she's a schemer by nature and rarely seems to fight seriously because of it. It's described in Perfect Memento that when Yukari fights she usually does so with a eerie smile and amused attitude, even when she loses. She's more likely to use the lose to her own ends and a fair number of the others are catching on to how frustrating Yukari is in a fight, like the result doesn't really matter to her, it's just part of a elaborate twisty scheme.

Anyone using Yukari as a power house BBEG is doing it wrong, sure she's strong and frightening, but her strength is supposed to be in her twisted intellect and completely out of the box schemes that seem to defy logic. A very long term planner ideally if I were to use Yukari, she'd be a character who would both at the same time seem like a villain AND support.

I'm of the camp that Yukari's losses are the fault of using the spellcard system for everything as opposed to just plain fighting. Her power stretches across so much that you can't really do anything without falling into a gap for eternity.

Which is why I'm saying, the only confrontation you'd have with her is a debate or something that isn't really a confrontation, through which she realizes that what she's doing could be accomplished without harming <the thing you want to keep her away from>.

Where as Ran is more of a direct straight laced intellect much like a super computer, she is able to do extremely complex mathematics in her head without problem, but she isn't used to thinking outside of normal logical parameters. So she wastes much of her time working out the width of rivers using math, that aside she's good support for her master, both strong, loyal and intelligent.

    >>8936803

but that's kind of the point, even without the spell card system in place, Yukari isn't the type to directly just kill or gap someone out of known existence. She's beyond that to a level where using her opponent towards her own ends is much more useful or even just amusing. Any fight with her would be on her terms with multiple branching plans depending on how the 'fight' goes. If they are genuinely threatening to her she could easily escape or manipulate her way out of the problem, it's pretty much her nature but she's not really someone you can directly compare power against because her power isn't a direct one, much like she herself isn't the kind of person to use direct force unless it serves a ultimate purpose.

I suppose you might say that ironically for a fox youkai, Ran is pretty honest and straight forward about things, whether that's because Yukari made her like that, or if it's just her personality I don't know, but she's just doesn't seem the scheming type.

The problem is that not everything has borders. Kaguya would probably wipe the floor with Yukari in a serious fight because of her control over eternity... whereas in a danmaku battle border manipulation is much more useful.

I'd go so far as to say this: She avoids fighting for anything she really wants unless she knows she will win. Which is why she brought Reimu along with her to face Kaguya that time, or why you don't see her as an opponent in Tenshi's scenario in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody - she avoided fighting because Tenshi decided to get serious, and there was a chance of losing (and she didn't want to lose to Tenshi).

Whereas on the other hand, even though she lost to [Reimu/Marisa/Sakuya] after the events of PCB, she didn't mind because she was just testing the strength of these amusing humans.

That said, without spellcard rules most anyone who made Yukari an enemy would find themselves moving between the border of life and death before they knew it, unless they're a stage 6 boss, final EX boss, or Tewi.

I think ZUN would have us beleive that some borders are much harder for Yukari to manipulate then others, just because Yukari's power is to manipulate borders doesn't mean she can easily do it all the time, it took some effort to get to the moon after all.

Personally I like to think Yukari just plans that far ahead with a dangerous insight into how people are going to react and how she can lead them to move in ways she wants and then plans further on the off chance they react in a different way and how to correct it. I see her sitting on a dozen different schemes at once watching them progress and occasionally making appearances to correct things she hadn't taken into account.

Of course, it's a fan view of everything. Yukari could just be very lazy and run the odd twisted scheme when needed.

Though I imagine Yukari's idea of a enemy would be a bit different from others, where Remilia might destroy someone for being disrespectful towards her, Yukari sees things in a different way, the opponents she seems to really dislike are people like Tenshi who are outsiders that look down on youkai. I think something like celestial arrogance could really get on her nerves in the same way the Lunarians kind of pissed her off, but she's smart enough as you say to know not to fight such strong opponents directly. Lunarian's have bullshit technology mixed with magic, Celestials are youkai kryptonite and strong as hell to boot.

The problem is that people put too much importance on danmaku battles, these aren't serious fights for the most part and even when they are they are done with danmaku duelling rules which are designed so the weak can challenge the strong.

I'd say yes because anything is possible in Gensokyo, it's part of the point, that said just because you can doesn't mean it's easy, the hardest ones would likely require special narrative circumstances, in a sense it's easier to think of Gensokyo as a fairy tale Discworld, getting big things done requires a story to be present and roles to be picked out.

Yukari can manipulate the borders between almost anything, but that doesn't mean that she will, or even that she'll want to. Yeah, Yukari created Gensokyo for whatever the fuck reason. I'm fairly sure that's been confirmed. The reason why is still unknown, though; might be so youkai still have a place to exist, might be as some kind of personal playground.

    >>8937531
Actually, yes. After all, Reimu gets her powers (however indirectly) from Yukari. The only thing she's canonically done completely on her own is learn to fly, which isn't that much of an achievement because EVERYONE can learn to fly in Gensokyo.

Yukari had a part in making the border, she didn't make it herself. It was a combined effort for alot of people, I think there was even a dragon involved somewhere but honest the specifics are beyond me.

The point is, a bunch of youkai were involved, Reimu's family were involved and so on. It was a combined effort.

Reimu's shrine and her bloodline are a important part of the border today, but I don't think they are the source of her power, at least not entirely. I'd say it's a combination of her bloodline and her shrine maiden training. She may not be very good as a shrine maiden when it comes to dealing with people and gathering faith, but when it comes to kicking ass she's got a talent for it and she's been doing it long since before the spell card system.

Certainly not the most powerful character around, but she does have countless experience some unfair advantages.

The more I think about this, the more interesting it seems. The idea that the hourai elixer granted immortal life, but not health thus requireing measures of a fairly extreme sort for immortals to avoid living in misery forever has good potential in my opinion. It nerfs the whole "no matter what happens I'm immortal so I don't care" aspect that can occur with immortal caracters, since they need to maintain a way of avoiding being sick for ever and ever. Anyone else like this idea?

Plus, Alice's dolls have no free will. Literally everything they do, Alice is forcing them to do, including everything from basic movement to the appearance of having emotions. This makes a lot of the fanart for Alice at least three times as hilarious.

That sounds horrible. There's no way you could maintain health for a thousand years, especially when you spend a few centuries attacking everyone you meet, and then a few more centuries sitting and staring at the ceiling because you just don't care anymore. Both of which Mokou did, as I recall. Once you did have some ailment which persisted through your reincarnation, you'd never get rid of it, and the immortal effectively becomes a long-lived mortal.

    >MALICE CANNON
I love that name. I hate that type of formation, but if you ignore that, it just sounds awesome. Is it a cannon that fires malice, or is it a cannon formed of pure, condensed malice? Who knows?

i am going to point at info of the touhouwikia, take this as you please

    >SDM came through the barrier in the early 1800 or something

ironical, the border was created in 1884

    >Moryia shrine gods came through recently because they were going to fade from existence because of lack of faith.

Kanako, a goddess of the wind and rain, seeks to gain all of Gensokyo's faith in order to prevent the declining level of faith in Gensokyo to reach the point where its gods lose their power. Were such a thing to happen, she believes, Gensokyo would fall into a state of chaos.

This is exactly why I love it. Whatever it is, it's just pure, unadulterated Malice.

    >Alice is canon gay for Marisa. That's all.
As far as I know, Alice and Marisa are canon neighbors and no more.
    >There's no way you could maintain health for a thousand years
Yes there is: magic and/or lunarian super science. Kaguya's got Eirin's shady drugs to keep her going and, from what I've heard, (might be fanon, I really don't know) Mokou has some sort of pact with a phoenix. Since she's immortal without the phoenix maybe it keeps her healthy, purging all the illness every time her body is reformed.

Amusingly, if you look at the text in SA, there's no real affection there. Alice is all business. And then her battle text in hisoutensoku when she beats Marisa:
    >Soon, the ultimate doll should be complete. With this, the forest will be mine.

Obviously, she's either lost her affection for Marisa or has only been plotting to kick Marisa out since the beginning, making excuses to stay near Marisa to study her battle style and make contingencies in order to be sure of winning.

    >As far as I know, Alice and Marisa are canon neighbors and no more.
ZUN said it, so it's Word of God. It was in an interview.

There's no canon information on exactly what Mokou's deal with the phoenix is.

    Mokou's a health nut, that's why she's healthy even though she's immortal.

only inside the barrier can you get people like this.

Remilia Scarlet, accursed bloodfeasting hellspawn of Scarlet Devil Mansion. Enjoys tea parties and assorted flavors of cheese.

    >Enjoys tea parties and assorted flavors of cheese.
Well who doesn't? Aside from the uncultured & lactose intolerant, respectively.

The lactose intolerant can enjoy the flavors of cheese, just, not the aftereffects.

    >Remilia Scarlet, accursed bloodfeasting hellspawn of Scarlet Devil Mansion.

Actually, Remilia is known to be a light drinker. She takes only an eensy bit of blood each time. Flandre is a raw foodist though, so she eats bloody meat.

Flandre also doesn't know how to properly attack a human, and without Sakuya or someone else preparing her food for her she accidentally destroys the person she wants to eat.

Yes, they have all this damn FUN around you while you continue to hate for wholly arbitrary reasons.
