So I've been playing some pokemon: tabletop adventures with some buddies, and we've been filling in holes where we could to make the game work. You see, there are a lot of missing pieces that players need in order to play this game. But the main thing I'm missing right now is the capabilities. I've read the archive where Stark explains what they are and how they're used and I have the newest version of the pokedex (if Mr. Stark hasn't updated it since the last thread) but I don't know what any of these capabilities mean.

Did Stark ever release the capabilities somewhere?
Also, one of players would like to know: Are there rules for playing a pokemon?

Pokemon TA general I guess. Anyone else having similar problems while trying to run this game?

I gave up on trying to put together a session since I don't know how to make encounters or how any of the gym battles would work if my players wanted to challenge one. I'll just wait for beta. Less work.

Does he have the pokemon up?

    >>9188447
Encounters should be easy assuming the pokemon stats are up. Just say, while walking in the grass... a wild Pokemon jumps out at you...etc. For Gym Battles again if the pokemon are stated out, just pick what type of badge is it and the pokemon appropriate.

I've been doing a few sessions of the so far and the problem I have with gyms is that they single out a player while the rest just look for 10 minutes and wait for their turn. Was there any specific way to do gym battles so they don't take so long?

Pokemon like to travel in packs, why wouldn't they? They're semi-intelligent creatures, and most like to travel in groups to take down prey or to not become prey. While other travel in one or two these should be harder like Elites or Solos.

I was reading the Pokemon Adventures manga the other week, and I really, really like the way it handles the legendaries. And the Ruby/Sapphire arch got me thinking.

I imagined a world where Groudon and Kyogre weren't stopped. Equally matched, they are still fighting. The entire Hoenn has turned into a wasteland, and nearby regions are also feeling the effects of their fight, not least by the great influx of people evacuated from it. All of Hoenn is off limits and guarded by military, but it doesn't keep out those dedicated people who believe there might be really strong and/or rare pokemon in the deserted region.

Dr. Mr. Stark said that the last class is something people have wanted to do for a while in a tabletop setting for pokemon.

    >It finds way to find synergy with nature more then the Ranger who masters it, more then the Breeeder who brings nature up and more then the Psychic or Martial Artist who are practitioners of nature's power.

There is currently no way to PLAY as a pokemon.

    My guess?

Some way to become a pokemon at the start of a campaign or transform into one for a bit.

It is, think about the fact that there are no normal Animals, and yet they eat meat. That means that some people hunt pokemon, obviously sentient creatures, for the pure purpose of food.

They use Pokemon as slaves in everything. Instead of developing technology there entire society is based around using pokemon with certain attributes to replace modern technology.

KA-D-BRA (aka PSIKICK), the Telepath Pokégirl
    Type: Near Human
    Element: Psychic
    Frequency: Rare
Diet: human style foods, especially sushi
    Role: commonly used for peacekeeping
    Libido: Average
    Strong Vs: Fighting, Poison, Psychic
    Weak Vs: Bug, Dark, Ghost
    Attacks: Telepathy, Confusion, Teleport, Telekinesis
Enhancements: High psi ability (teleportation, telepathy, telekinesis), high intelligence
    Evolves: Alaka-Wham (normal)
    Evolves From: A-Bra (normal)
    >> Anonymous 04/14/10(Wed)16:14 No.9191451
Nothing summarizes the evolution from A-Bra to Ka-D-Bra so much as "growth". She grows taller, usually only a few inches, with the tallest seen being 5'7. Her bust size increases dramatically, becoming the D-cup she takes her name from. Her "antennae" double in length, usually 4-6 inches in length. Their skin darkens to a medium orange, though their antennae remain yellow. They also become more active, requiring less sleep, and more regular Tamings.
With their physical growth, and especially the increase in the size of their antennae, Ka-D-Bras experience significant growth in their psychic powers. Their ability to teleport and powerful telekinesis more than makes up for their physical frailty, giving them an edge in combat that their previous form lacked, and their augmented intelligence gives them a grasp of tactics that allows them to make the most of their attacks.
Ka-D-Bras tend to make people nervous. Many Ka-D-Bra sided briefly with Mao in her Rebellion, only to break away after Pine Ridge.
Unfortunately, the taint of associating with Mao continues to follow this once more plentiful and valued breed. Fear and distrust make Ka-D-Bra nervous or report feeling sickened, while those who have found a Tamer who trusts and likes them find a staunch ally in the near humans.
One peculiarity of the Ka-D-Bra still has researchers puzzled. A Ka-D-Bra will eagerly bend any spoons she comes across with her telekinesis, almost to the point of compulsion. While this urge is not intense enough for Tamers to use it as bait to capture Feral Ka-D-Bras (which are as rare as their unevolved form), most Tamers who have a Ka-D-Bra in their Harem quickly learns to eat with chopsticks.

    MYNX, the Nimble Pokégirl
    Type: Animorph (mink)
    Element: Normal
    Frequency: Uncommon
    Diet: human style foods
    Role: entertainer and public service
    Libido: Average to High
    Strong Vs: Ghost
    Weak Vs: Fighting
    Attacks: Tackle, Leap, Dodge, Dance
Enhancements: Enhanced Speed (x3), Enhanced Agility (x6), Enhanced Hearing (x3), Enhanced Olfactory Sense (x4)
Disadvantages: Mynx all suffer from a problem with their lung capacity, resulting in tiring quickly from sustained exertion and vulnerability to certain attacks.
Evolves: Lupina (Moon Stone), Draco (Dragon Scale), Lynx (orgasm; mechanism unknown), Ursine (Dark Stone), Furrite (orgasm), Phaenine (Angel Stone), Slutton (battle stress), Bawdger (Diamond Stone), Slottern (Water Stone), Pyrona (Dragon E-medal)
    Evolves From: None

Another of the normal-types that were originally created for Sukebe's War, which are known to evolve in many directions: so many, in fact, that some researchers are insistent that there are even more evolutions just waiting to be discovered. As it is now, these furred-all-over Pokégirls are affectionate, useful in and out of battle, and if it wasn't for their genetic quirk with their lung problems they would be extremely popular among pet owners and tamers. As it is, they are only popular among pet owners- many say that their fur is the softest and greatest feeling fur of any Pokégirl (and some Pokégirls, such as Kitsune and Kittens, are known to resent this view). Fortunately, Mynx aren't overbearing about this boasting, as only their owners say such things. They have long tails that are about half again as long as the Pokégirl is tall, and is completely covered with that soft fur
Tamers, however, only deal with Mynx because of their many various evolutions, as the Mynx herself is not useful in prolonged battles. Many battles that are down to a Mynx against any other Pokégirl are forfeited because the Mynx wouldn't last long enough against their opponent. Because of their lung problems, Mynx Pokégirls just are of no use in Sex Battles either. Despite their high libidos, they have a low pleasure threshold at the same time, which researchers attribute to this breed's lung problem.
During the war, the Mynx were kept as a reserve guard that would annoy the human forces as the main Pokégirl forces either suckered the humans into a trap or were in retreat. They were only used during the beginning of the war, however, as Sukebe proceeded to evolve his Mynx forces into their more powerful evolutionary forms.

These Pokégirls don't like to be with Eva-breed Pokégirls, however, due to the comparisons that are drawn between them. The Eva-breed are more numerous these days, however, due to the years following the Revenge War: the Mynx were one of the easier to find Pokégirls in that day and age, and many were slaughtered. In the years between then and modern-times, however, the Mynx has staged a remarkable comeback in numbers.

I run gym battles like this:
3 rounds. Last team standing wins.
Round 1, player and gym leader send out a pokemon. No substitutions. Once a pokemon faints or is returned, move to round 2. The pokemon who is not returned or fells the foe is the winner of round 1.
Round 2, player and gym leader send out a pokemon. No substitutions. Once a pokemon faints or is returned, move to round 3. The pokemon who is not returned or fells the foe is the winner of round 2.
Round 3, player and gym leader send out a pokemon. No substitutions. Once a pokemon faints or is returned, substitutions are allowed. You may only use substitutions with pokemon who were winners of previous rounds.

This means trainers must have at least 3 pokemon when challenging a gym leader.

It also means that if you lose your first two rounds, you'll have to beat all three of the leader's pokemon with your last pokemon.

Hell, if you take good typing in, you'll win the 3 rounds no problem.

They start at 10, and they have an option. Go to school, or become a pokemon trainer. Going to school they learn about everything a normal kid would learn, and about pokemon. These guys are your pokemon prof., gym leaders, elite 4, battle city...etc.

Making it grim dark, I say that only 1:4 pokemon trainers that start at age 10 make it to adult hood. They're either killed by pokemon were eaten, killed by another trainer for their possessions, or they were killed by diseases and or lack of nutrition.

Pokemon school is just as cut throat but instead of losing your life (very rarely) you lose social standing. Which is a lot worse to many, but the hope of gaining it back drives people. After school, you have option of going back home and living off the government, adventurer, or work for the government. Staying home and living off the government you must have a child (after all you need more people to continue the cycle) and never leave your small village. If you do well on your adventures (aka surviving) for one year, you get hazard pay. You can only withdraw 50%, the other 50% goes into savings, and when you retire from adventuring that will be your retirement.

Gym Leaders, Professors, Scientist, Elite Four all get paid salaries. They get raises depending on the number of years served, valuable research, or infamy on your dueling style.

I refluffed the canon for Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures, but you could do whatever you'd like.
Trainers are allowed to get their pokemon license at 18. They go through grade school until 16, then go to 2 years of pokemon school or some other school if they want nothing to do with pokemon.
Each trainer is licensed and so are any poke balls they use. This way the pokemon, what are essentially weapons, are decently regulated and only allowed to be used by trained people who know how to handle them.
This doesn't mean kids aren't exposed to pokemon at all. They just can't own any. If they have pokemon around the house, their parents are probably the owners.

Which is stupid, because you could just legally own pokemon and use them normally to make a nice sum. Especially since several of their schemes in the game wouldn't be illegal in the base setting that you've outlined so far, where eating certain pokemon is only naturlal; in this setting, selling Slowpoke Tails wouldn't be illegal, and would be a quick, legal, and easy way to make money for them.

The Mystic, as very many of you have guessed, can take the form of a pokemon. Quite literally.
Of its two starting features, Possess and Borrow, Possess allows your spirit to leave your body and take control of a pokemon, playing as one temporarily. The draw back here is that your body is left by itself and will be in need of protection. Of course, while in control of a pokemon you should be able to protect your real body quite easily. The second power, Borrow, allows the Mystic to borrow, for one use, a Move that the pokemon they were possessing knew while the Mystic is in their own body they returned to. Certain moves, may not be borrowed.

Yes, but *why* did they steal the pokemon? In the anime, it's evil for the sake of evil, fine for what the show is trying to get across, not so much for a more serious RPG. Again, stealing slowpoke for their tails might make sense, until you consider how easy they are to catch, and that the risks of being discovered or caught for outweigh the minor trouble of finding and catch Slowpokes, then setting up a breeding farm for them.

These posts got me thinking. The poke world seems to be heavily regulated, with government providing subsidies and handouts (free poke centre, free/subsidized starter pokemon, etc). Team Rocket's actions are usually deemed illegal, as they are not going along with the government regulations.

Team Rocket could be interpreted to be a right wing, pro free markets organization attempting to oust the current communist government.. or at least just trying to avoid their regulation through the creation of a black market.

Fuck, this thread/concept is looking better and better all the time. Before I saw this thread I thought the closest to a Pokemon RPG I could get was playing a 4.0 Shaman... but this is very promising.

The Buffet will be able to able to use Pokemon Moves such as Swords Dance or Clam Mind, useless to a human. But, once they Possess a pokemon, thos ebuffs will remain, and in leaving that pokemon, the Buffet could leave those buffs on the pokemon they Possessed, serving a support role.

The Guardian will be able to use protection Moves, Reflect, Light Screen, Safeguard, Defog, Protect, etc. In order to serve their team as a defender.

The Godspeaker will be able to steal the powers of the legendary pokemon. Their power will be like the words of gods, but in using a god's power they will attract very deadly attention.

Hell, Team Rocket could be actually working for the betterment of humanity at the expense of pokemon, a supportable political standpoint. After all, with pokemon being used as work forces and food, it's not that much of a stretch to see them becoming servants more than pets in a household. So less evil, more controversial and in opposition of the current government.

Why? Make your own reasons per campaign.

Right now, the campaign I'm running has a lot to do with the major corporations in the pokemon world.
Mainly: Pokemon Storage Company, Silph Co., and Devon Co.

With CEOs dying and their heirs getting killed off as well, the major corporations which the Pokemon Nation heavily rely on are becoming untrustworthy.

Some are being passed over to different leaders that completely upset the balance of the entire pokemon system.

Especially when a new, cheap Poke Ball, which is arguably more effect then the old one, is being practically given away. And about 1.8 million are donated to the Pokemon Storage Company when one of their facilities are attacked and each Poke Ball needs replacing.

Some of my players' current worries:
What if someone can control everyone in those Poke Balls?
What if those Poke Balls are actually good, but they just fail?
Who is killing all of the CEOs?
How are they orchestrating murders that are spanning the entire country?
Why is Aqua so active in Kanto if Archie and Maxie are known to be dead?
Who will save their party member, Sam Silph, heir to the Silph Company?

    More on the Mystic:
The Channeler advanced class will allow you to use Borrow in more complex ways, like let another pokemon borrow a move from another pokemon, or borrow Moves without possession.

The Muse will be able to sooth great beasts and legends or ask for their help (a Cryptozoologist with a different style of play). But, you can't take Godspeaker and Muse since they act with legends in opposing ways.

That's what the Mystic looks like so far.

    Target pokemon.
They need to make a "possess" roll on d100, just like capture rolls, restraint rolls, breeding rolls, etc.
It's a harder roll then a capture roll, making it the hardest d100 roll in the game, but there is no roll need for your own pokemon.
You could potentially possess a bad guy's pokemon.

It's just the lifeless body thing. That thing takes extra damage if you aren't inside it and it's hurt.

I'm thinking having it set a decade or so before RBY in Kanto, back when there were thought to be only a hundred or so pokemon. Cinnabar Mansion will still be active, the Sliph Co. building will be a burgeoning new company, and item/pokemon transfer systems will be a new and revolutionary innovation.

    >>9194975
You can still catch pokemon. Just not with those features. Being able to borrow wild pokemon to overcome obstacle X is very useful.
    >>9195229
You can, but whatever replaces the pokemon becomes one of the 3 allowed for that match. Which means the baton passer/u-turner will show up again in the 2nd or 3rd round anyway. Plus Baton-passing on the first or second rounds would be useless as you have to switch the baton-catcher out immediately after you defeat that pokemon. A helpful will do something for you and, if you take features for it, you can have up to 4 at the same time, plus your companion, plus your pokemon on your team. But Helpfuls will leave if they help you once. Companions stick around until you find a better pokemon to use as companion.

    More about baton passing/u-turn.
It is a terrible idea to use these against gym leaders, unless you do it in a careful, well tested manner. Gym leaders WILL send out someone who can take the round if they see that baton passer/u-turner in the 1st or 2nd round. Your best bet is >>9195869. That's the only way I'd suggest you use it. The GM's guide is supposedly going to have many pre-made pokemon to destroy all comers and at least one per gym will have a way to stop that kind of tactic.

I am really loving this idea, but the idea behind the psychic and martial artist seems bad to me in light of the setting. Everything else is really cool, but the trainers don't fight or really engage physically with these creatures. That, in my view, is the whole point is to have the pokemon fight each other.

Perhaps they could instead train with the pokemon in the case of the martial artist to raise the pokemon's physical stats or the psychic could amplify the special stats of any specific pokemon.

Take a look at Pokemon Special (or Adventures or whatever), the manga. I didn't think those classes would fit until I got bored and read some of it. Then shit like Bruno and Yellow made me think again.

I am going to have to be honest, I haven't read the manga. I have only really played the games and I understand that there are reasons why those kind of mechanics would exist in the games. Perhaps I am missing something by not knowing about the events in the manga then?

Not Stark, but I'll wager a guess. Yellow's like a psychic who skipped the psychic part and went straight to Healer and Empath. Green seems to be a Breeder -> Evolver, and I thought Silver would be a Breeder -> Trader except Stark's description of the advanced class isn't anything like him.

I would strongly suggest al least reading some of them, they're a decent read. Dr. Stark's game is based Heavily off the manga and it captures the mood and feel of how the game should be played.

Not really, it's just that in the manga battles are presented to be a bit more involved on the part of the trainer. Like half the time they're running when they toss out the pokeballs for no reason, trainers are often hit and injured by pokemon, and Bruno sends out his pokemon from pokeball nunchucks so they'll be moving faster and hit harder with their first attack. Most of the trainers tend to train themselves as much as their pokemon.

Yellow: Healer/Empath/Evolver skipped prerequisites because she's a Mary Sue. But that's okay, we still love her.
    Green: Ace Trainer, Breeder, Evolver
Silver: Ace Trainer, something, I don't know.

As for the manga influence, it's very much so there. It's one of the reasons why I started this project.

Not really. You've seen her before. In the first chapter. When you see it, you'll know.

Here is the most updated alpha splatbook.
It's the most /tg/ will get for now and it is nearly everything except the fluff that Axiom, the champ he is, is adding and the editing Axiom has been doing as well.
It's also missing almost all of my pre-made GM stuff.
    That'll come later. Eventually.

The only thing I remember is it had a rather... dangerous Psychic gym leader fight.

Like, possession and the main character nearly getting pasted at least once. But that doesn't seem to have the same coloring style.

I guess I'll know soon enough.
