So, I was wondering if anyone knew about how long it would be before Black Mesa Janitor releases his latest version of Adeptus Evangelion? I'm planning to DM for my group when BMJ finishes his final version and I'd like to get as much of that planning done as I can beforehand. Also, if anyone has run this, about how long does combat take with 4 people?
Adeptus Evangelion stories are also appreciated.
If you don't know what this is, go look it up on suptg. All threads involving this system have the Evangelion tag.
    Scene Shinji barely related.

It's going to be done soon. The major rules are all set, and there will be no significant changes unless something goes explosively wrong. The fluff is in, the optional rules are away, and all that's really left is optimising the rules-set to be sure it works the way it's meant to. That's going to take however long it takes to assure everyone involved in testing the rules that they work.

    Now there is.

Everyone has said thus far that the official deadline is the end of the month, and we are trying our absolute best to stick to that.

If it takes longer, be assured that it'll be worth it. As it is, there is really not very much to be added.

And as always, the team has been notified and questions about changes are welcome.

I REALLY don't want another person to start up a game, but I can only delay them so long before we're back to D&D.
This also may be a way to ease them into Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader.

Know idea about the release date, but I'll bite on the conversation since I want to run AdEva with my regular DH group sometime.

I wrote up some characters a while back and a 'sample' angel to get a feel for the system and ran a generic combat with some BTech models/scenery. For the most part, I found combat was about a gradual wearing down of the Angel's defenses, where everyone tries to keep each other's AT Fields protected while they chip away at the Angel's hitting it then wearing it down again.

Basically, since it can regenerate it's 9-20(!) point AT Field with a full action, you need everyone in concert taking it down because no single Eva can do that much damage on its own. Which I found awesome, because I was worried about balancing a fight with potential 4,5,6 v 1.

All I can really say is: I'd give my players immediately the Literacy skill (since, unlike DH, it's assumed everyone can read+write in modern settings) and either their home language or some other boost for english-speakers only. And make sure everyone spends their first 200XP on AT Power (Spread). Without an AT Field, you die.

I'm not sure how much you know/have experience with the setting, but I played out the first battle over a couple of free nights and it seemed a nice system. Any particular questions? I'd also love to hear from someone who actually has a campaign going (like those AWESOME IRC chaps with the bigass pyramid), because I'm keen on this as well.

4 is what we're trying to balance it for, so it should be a few hours online (2-4), halve that time for RL sessions.

    >Adeptus Evangelion stories are also appreciated.

    >give everyone literacy
Literacy is now assumed to be a universal thing, not a skill.

    >make sure XP is spent on spread
Spread and Neutralize are automatically gained and neutralization is less of an action sink--the base power is a half action, maintaining free. You no longer take ego damage from an incomplete neutralize either.

    >AWESOME IRC chaps with the big pyramid
Of which I am one. John Douglas/Pilot 00 here, glad to hear that people are actually bothering to read logs.

All but one of us have seen the series and at least some, if not all of the movies. Most of our Angels are entirely made from scratch rather than rolled, but I have helped test angel generation and the canon ones and can confidently say that they're generally balanced.

Advice? I'd suggest to do things outside of just school sessions. Explore the city, have events and such. If you don't have any ideas at all, I DID make a d100 random event ideas chart that I could post to get the right feel across.

Could you share your d100 list with us simpletons?

I'm kinda suck for ideas aside from my one concept for the KK getting pissed off at the PCs for killing "God's messengers" (and who could blame them? The angels are, well, 'angels' and they shoot fuckhueg burning crosses).

    >> neutralization is less of an action sink--the base power is a half action, maintaining free. You no longer take ego damage from an incomplete neutralize either.

Hmmmm, maybe I'm just inexperienced, but wouldn't this make Neutralise too much of an "easy" way? I liked the last edition (thought I didn't play it much at all) and thought it was a nice idea, with the poor guy doing all the neutralising getting mindraped as he struggles to bring down the angel for the others. It had a nice feel. I'm kinda worried this will go all DH-ascended powers, and make people start wiping away ATS 20 angels with little drawbacks, is all.

Each of those things sound good in isolation, but together it just sounds a little too easy on the pilots.

It's not. As it was, nearly every single death in the game was due to ego, and it was actually unlikely that a person could possibly complete the entire set without losing it entirely. This change is only meant to make it so that a well-played character is capable of finishing a campaign without resorting to GM intervention. That's not a problem for good GMs, but it has to be there for the ones who are scared shitless of ever operating outside the explicit rules.

I guess draining their protection is bad enough. I saw what happened in one game when an attack got past an AT Field... Evas are pretty damn fragile to start with.

Then again, this Angel could project its image to appear as if it were teleporting and shot 7dm-radius explosive rounds out of its forehead...so it may not have been the ideal base model.

Sorry for any derps in the wording, I cranked this entire thing out over the course of one sleepless night. Janitor has said that it'll make it into the final version of v2, last I recall.

Difficulty was one of our biggest concerns when retouching the angel generation charts.

It's not perfect, and being a random generation chart it could hardly be, but I think it gets the job done.

Currently it factors things such as party size and number of angels defeated, as well as the relative experience of players with the system.

You can and should modify everythign you get to make it work. For example, in a funland campaign, you could make the military graveyard still be nice by giving it an overall inspiring message of hope by reading out inscriptions of people who died in heroic situations to great effect. In a Baron Mode campaign, you could turn something like unpacking vital cargo into unpacking cargo that turns out to be from the now-decommissioned prototyping facility that built the Evangelions and have one of the players find the log of live test subject outcomes, mostly reading dead, catatonic (terminated), and unknown. The list is twenty pages long.

That sort of thing is just good GMing.

That would be hard. Real hard.

Best way I can think of is to spend no surplus on evas and go straight for unlimited positron turret works. Multiple ODs, each with specialized VTOL loadouts. It'd be near impossible, but that one lucky called shot Righteous Fury could possibly make it.

Of course, such things are a little counter to the purpose of the game, but if you REALLY don't want evas in there, v2 includes stats for a "proper" mecha intended to be piloted in the same way that an eva is, just minus the AT field and plus some very special tricks.

    >> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan 04/22/10(Thu)22:18 No.9368057
    >>9367963

Not by the game rules. It comes down to GM arbitration. The AT field means that the only meaningful weaponry that can kill it involves either macrobatteries of positron weaponry, N2 mines with enough CBRND forces to engage it and finish it afterwards, planting explosives in such a way that the Angel walks the AT field over them before setting them off, and the like.

In my notionalfuturegame I intended for one Angel to have to be dealt with by conventional firepower. Aside from the above options there's also more mcinematic options, like deploying Engineer teams in VTOLS and trying to fastrope them ontothe Angel to set off micronukes. This sort of thing always comes down to the GM and what they play like.

    >>9367963

If they have SR below 100, you could amass enough firepower to get a few lucky hits in that could kill it.

You can also spray them with bakelite until you completely freeze them, pray that the angel interception system grapples them into submission.

That said, anything with 100+ SR is unkillable without penetrating the fields somehow, your best bet would be to shower them with positrons until righteous fury kicks in.

You could always give him a success no matter what direction the narrative takes, only it comes at the cost of a city. Maybe they can only N2 it when it's right in the heart of the CBD, maybe if it gets any closer (outside the city limits) it'll be too close to Nerv, I dunno. Just make it cost Nerv badly. Very badly.

Yes, it'll be a PR nightmare. Yes, no one in the world will like Nerv ever again. But they *did* end up with no usable Evas against an Angel. RAW that's a TPK. Then again, grimdark v noblebright.

I do also like the idea of an elite team dropping onto it's shoulders and grenading it. Especially if they all die in the process. Especially if they were well known and loved by the PCs/players (longrunning alternate characters, etc).

Just make it mean something to them, rather than a get out of jail free card.

Allright, I'll do what I can to explain. I am running a "Hunt for Adam" style campaign, where the players are based in a floating aircraft carrier about half the size of an imperial star destroyer. In my game world, the angels appear at random locations around the world in an attempt to find and merge with Adam. Problem is, NERV has no Idea where he is, and therefore, needing to kill the angels before they can search out Adam, needs to take a much more proactive role.

Now the HMS Illustrious is primarily a ship of war, and during its construction and outfitting basically everyone dropped the ball on what exactly the pilots were supposed to be doing when they weren't sleeping, running synch tests, or recovering from EVA related Injuries. This basically means that the pilots, particularly the twin Prodigies, have a lot of free time during the day to get in trouble wandering around the ship, or whatever.

YOU WILL BE NEEDED SO MUCH AT SOME POINT IF YOU CAN SPARE ANYTHING. SERIOUSLY. We plan to work on rules for exactly that idea at some point in the future because it's just so great.

Our ops director is Captain Megan Welsh, a 25 year old Irish American from Boston who lost her entire large extended family either in second impact, the famines following, or the Impact wars (rolled a 10 for insanity points during character generation, and her player took Damaged goods and a modified version of Depressive to represent PTSD.) Long story short, Megan, while she tries to be a good parent figure to the pilots, is a bit overly fond of the bottle at times. And when she found out that the pilots were either loafing around their bunkroom all day long or wandering around the ship getting underfoot / trying to sneak into the Vault (Think Terminal Dogma from the series, only not quite as X-Bawk hueg), decides that this cannot be allowed to continue.

Instead of hiring a tutor and having them come over to the Illy on the next courier flight, or getting Dr. Rick Hunter (Project E rep onboard) to rig a couple MAGE terminals up in a empty supply room like a sane person would, the good captain decides that she's going to haul half a dozen 14 year old kids to her office every day and teach them the more tatically oriented aspects of her job, figuring that instilling some basic tactical / command skills and whatnot in the kids under her command can't possibly hurt their chances to save the world.

Due to me not paying any attention when creating basic outline for the Illy, and only afterwards realizing that she is both longer and masses more then every aircraft carrier ever built combined, she is almost 4 goddamn kilometers long, and like 900 meters wide, with 28 decks. She weighs more then the present day US navy for godssake. There's a small amusement park on H deck with its own small rollercoaster for gods sake, and a dozen movie theaters. Thankfully none of my players have asked exactly how the United Kingdom could afford to build this goddamn monster in a Post 2nd Impact economy, but as I've already introduced her, its a bit late to take her out. As for ship stats, Its more or less static scenery/plot device thus far, though I do plan to make it a mobile object for some of the later fights once I get a chance to stat her out, as a sort of hybrid battleship/carrier for the ops director to have a bit more to do.. The biggest problem that I've found thus far is having a reason for the ship to have a bunch of kids near the pilots age for them to make friends with, though I might just go the Enterprise-D route and say that crew can bring their families along or something.

I actually have "THE SHIP IS TOO BIG" as more of a concern, though none of my players have really complained yet. As for Fluff, I mostly have the players confined to the NERV related areas like the EVA cages, Central dogma, Medlabs, and all that, and have those areas fleshed out pretty well. I at least have an idea of what goes where for most of the rest of the ship, and a rough sketch of her armament and air group, which includes a pair of 60 year old B52s modified for carrier ops via rule of cool and XBAWK huge flight deck. Were I to sketch up her design again, I would make her maybe a bit more then twice the size of a Nimitz class carrier, which is plenty big for this kind of thing.

If you want some more details for the Illy, I can start putting them down once I get back from my walk.

Ohh yeah the players love it. Thats where the Illustrious's nickname came from anyways. The Ops director, who I mentioned her background earlier, is played like a alcholic, PTSD female version of Kamina. I am doing my Angels slightly out of order right now, in order to throw the players off balance, and generally freak SEELE the hell out with how things aren't going anywhere remotely near to being just as planned. I've done Sachiel through the twins, and just did Leliel last weekend. Now two of the players, including our ops director have actually watched the series, and know enough to stay the hell away from the fucker. Four pilots don't, and three of them decide to stay in a tight group while closing on him before opening fire. Thirty seconds and a sizeable chunk of Paris latter, NERV is down three evangelions, and British Asuka and Scottish Rei are ordered to fall back while Megan figures out exactly how she's going to explain this to the commander.

Deciding that she has to get her kids out of there, No matter the cost, she has the two remaining units stay just outside the shadow working on neturalizing the AT field, while the Illy's engines are reved up to full. Then she gives the order to brace for impact, and throws the throttle to the firewall, with the Illy leaping forwards at the blazing speed of about 150 miles per hour.

    > Ramming Leliel with a flying city-sized aircraft carrier.

There are no words that can do this idea justice.

The Illustrious tears into then opening to Leliel's Driac sea with the combined weight of about a billion tons of steel and advanced alloy traveling at a speed far faster then any such mass was ever intended to travel. Needless to say, they get sucked in, though Leliel obviously isn't very happy about being forcibly deflowered in such a manner by a city-carrier, flashing a bunch of different colors and waking the dead with a godawful wailing noise. Inside the Angel, The Illy pops into the Driac Sea a hundred meters or so from Unit-01, 03, and 04. While she may have managed to ohh so cleverly recklessly endanger three of NERV's most valuable assets, along with like 99% of the Royal Navy, Megan still has a plan for getting out of this. After finding that the Illy's repulsor drives dont function without a surface to push against, and the induction engines aren't exactly designed to push the whole ship themselves without overloading, Megan reestablishes communications with the pilots, and orders them to start working the Angels AT field over as well. When the group isn't able to breach the SR 200 threshold by about 20 points due to some synch flux they've taken, Megan decides its time to stop fucking around with all this AT field crap she doesn't really understand and fall back to something its become rather clear to everyone else on the table that she does. Extreme, indiscriminate force. She has the captain of the Illy, who's been spending this entire time alternating between "HOLY SHIT THAT WAS AWESOME" and "DEAR GOD BITCH, YOU ARE INSANE", to open fire with everything from the spinal railguns, to the point defense autocannons. As well as the ships full inventory of a dozen N2 tipped IRBMs.

Meanwhile, outside the Driac Seal, Pilots Angela Windsor (British Asuka), and Jamie McCloud (Scottish Rei), are finally managing to close their mouths after watching another needlessly insane plan by their commanding officer apparently backfire on her, with fatal results. About five minutes after watching all their co-workers apparently die kicking and screaming on the Megan Welsh suicide train, the Angel suddenly gives off another godforsaken screech, flashes a dozen different colors before settling on void black, and starts to swell to a massive size. Wisely deciding that they want no part of an exploding angel, they run like hell from the epicenter of the upcoming disaster. They turn back in time to watch the now two kilometer wide Leliel pop like a goddamn ballon, as the Illustrious rapes his other side flying out covered in blood, with guns still smoking from the previous alpha strike, and the other three EVA's falling to the ground and smashing a couple apartment blocks flat. Needless to say nothing else done that session, if not the campaign will be able to top that. And despite NERV command and SEELE being pissed that she endangered the Illy like that, they did have to admit that she got the more valuable EVA's out as well as taking out an angel and bringing their plans to revive their dead wife/become gods one step closer to completion.

Seeing how its currently 2 in the morning and I really need to get some sleep tonight, I think I'll only do one more short one before I go to bed, If this thread is still around I can post some moar stuff in between working on the Harry Potter RPG I'm developing.

Ok so I've told you about our groups ops directior, and mentioned two of the five pilots, Angela Windsor, who is pretty much a blonde, english version of Asuka without the mommy issues, and Jamie Mccloud, a scottish version of Rei, down to her Evangelion, which she ironically rolled the exact same apperance as Cannon Unit-00. Other Pilots are Hanna, an Italian Neo-spartan with the fanatical drawback, who likes sniping with a long-mas, at least till she can afford training for a heavy railgun. We also have Ishi Hikari, a Japanese Mecha Otaku who happens to be a natural in finding new ways to use his AT field, and drives Dr Hunter crazy in figuring out how he does it. The final pilot is Giles Fortner, a British boy with an unhealthy obsession with fire, and who specializes in getting his EVA to RIP AND TEAR THE HUGE GUTS OF THE ENEMY.

Now our second fight is up against Shamshel, who at the time is hiding in the Amazon Rain forest after the UN got pissy after he attacked a couple refuge camps and N2'd the hell out of him. The four pilots who were at that session get loaded up onto EVA carriers since the Illy is on the other side of the world at the time, and orbital recon suggest that Shamshel's going to be finished with regenerating fairly soon. Once they reach the sector where Shamshel is hidden, the EVA's get dropped from a few klicks up, and the pilots need to roll a fairly easy agility check to deploy their parachutes correctly.

Now Angela, Hana, and Giles all manage to not fuck up the very easy (+30) task of having their EVA's assume the correct posture for freefall, and then tapping a icon in the corner of their HUD twice to release the parachute. Ishi on the other hand... Ishi is so excited about being on his second combat mission that he rolls a 95, causing his parachute to release too early, fouling the chute on one of his EVA's limbs and causing his EVA to spin out of control a full kilometer above the rainforest. Luckily he has the presence of mind to spread his AT field in time, allowing him to make a more or less survivable landing without tearing his eva up too badly, after he smashes through two different levels of rain forest canopy, destroys like 4 acres of trees, scares every animal away in a ten mile radius, and scares a pair of poachers who happened to be standing fifty feet away from where his units head ended up smashing into the ground, tangled in his chute and the debris from aftermentioned canopies.

After cutting their comrade, newly dubbed "Thud" out of his tangled chute and the better part of a dozen trees with their prog knives, the group decides to split into two sets of two to cut down on how long they need to spend searching for Lobsterboy without allowing him to pick them off one by one. After about twenty minutes of playing "I spy something green" Angela and Giles are distracted from their latest couple's arguement by a pair of pink energy whips wrapping themselves around Giles ankles and smashing him up against a tree. Sure enough, they've been so busy fighting that they havent noticed a giant red alien sneaking up on them. (though it doenst hurt that they both rolled absolutely terrible on perception during character generation.) The other team shows up a few rounds later, and a swirling meele quickly develops with Angela and Giles playing tank, while Ishi and Hanna nail Shamshel from range. Then Shamshel gets lucky and crushes the torso of Giles ride, causing him to black out due to fatigue. Giles rolls for Berserker, gets a 9, and Mommy freaks out a little about how her son is getting manhandled by this little mermaid reject. She proceeds to YOU HAVE HUGE GUTS, RIP AND TEAR to Shamshel.

After tearing Shamshel apart in the finest tradition of the more widely known Unit-01, Our 01 decides that come to think of it, those other Units also have to go, and knocks the head off the weakened Unit-02 with a single hit from her axe. Cue group going "Shit just got Real". Hana tries to restrain 01, but gets thrown up against a tree and knocked out, leaving Ishi, who hasnt exactly done anything very impressive this session, other then epic failing at pulling a ripcord for his parachute. Now Ishi isn't exactly fond of Giles, and having just watched the rest of the group get their asses kicked, decides that he isn't going to try to restrain 01 like Hana, and lets loose with everything he has, finishing the damage done to unit-01s chest with a lucky hit from his AT wave when its about 2 dm away from him, and leaving him having to haul 3 EVA's or parts therefore of to the nearest large clearing for Evac himself. Thats it for tonight.

Yeah that was pretty much my groups reaction to Megan's plan, though her player regularly pulls this kind of shit. I'm actually kind of afraid what she's going to do once we get Illy fully stated once I have time to do so after this semester finishes up. If the ship ever gets destroyed I figure she has about a 50% chance to try to ride the ship into the angel of the week as the bridge burns around her.
