Viridian Forest was burning. Sweat ran down Purple's back as he came close to the edge of the forest, and then he stopped. There were the culprits - Team Rocket. These no-good criminals were flushing Pokemon out of their native habitat, then capturing the terrified things en-mass when they rushed out of their blazing home. Already. they had a bulging net full of various low stage bug pokemon, as well as Pikachu, Pidgey, and the odd Pidgeotto.

The grunts turned to meet the intruder - Purple didn't look so intimidating. Just a young man with a bad fashion sense and an entourage of wild Squirtle behind him. One of the masked men glared with a toxic grin. "You here to free these Pokemon, kid? You'll have to go through us first!" the grunts instinctively reached for their Pokeballs, but Purple was faster.

"Don't mind if I do!" The Ranger unfastened a small capsule from his belt, but this was no Pokeball. "Riot Bomb, I choose you!" he cried as he tossed the device at the criminals' feet. "R-riot bomb?!" one of them shouted shortly before it blasted apart into a cloud of stun spores. The grunts were overtaken in seconds and collapsed to the ground.

"Squirtles, go put out that fire!" Purple ordered the wild tiny turtles that had been following him, as he flicked open his bowie knife to free the captured pokemon.

tl;dr and terrible writefaggotry aside, the Ranger is a pretty fuckawesome class in Pokemon Tabletop Adventures. Too bad it's literally unplayable until proper rules for the Styler are released.

    Yeah, P:TA general.

    Awesome.

So, anything you guys really want to try once beta is out?

I'm thinking about going as a classless trainer with the "Guys, Watch This!" feat.

Just be a fairly average trainer, playing with his pokemon, battlen, traden, trainan, the usual pokemon stuff. But always have 1 feat point that I don't use (or maybe 3 at higher levels)

Then, the first time my pokemon all faint... I spend a single feat point on the Martial Artist class (and 2 advanced classes if I am a high enough level at the time)

DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE FIGHT.

AND THEN I FUCK UP WHOEVER HAD THE BALLS TO HURT MY POKEMON.

The year is 1941. A small group of soldiers are separated from their platoon behind enemy lines, left to wander the German countryside. With only their rifles, their army-issue pokemon, and the man watching their back, they have to find their way back to allied territory.

And if that means busting some nazi head, then so be it.

Reread it. It can only be used when you would be able to use a trainer action (ie, on you turn during battle) but its a free action, you can gain the class and two advanced classes AND STILL BE ABLE TO ATTACK, all in a single turn.

So even when you gain the class you can leap into battle and start fighting without having to wait.

Also, since your pokemon all fainted, i'm pretty sure you would qualify for the Enduring Soul advanced class.

What would be a good choice for the 3rd advanced class?

Enduring Soul's an Advanced Class of Ace Trainer. You'd have to be Martial Artist/Ace Trainer/Enduring Soul if you went that route.

Also you only qualify if you yourself are knocked unconscious.

Here's an interesting tidbit. Special Ops Rangers/Martial Artists can get higher damage reduction than a Black Belt up until the Black Belt's Strength modifier is +13.

A Special Ops Ranger can get up to Perfect Armor, which gives them a damage reduction of 25.

A Martial Artist/Black Belt can get Toughest Skin, which gives them damage reduction equal to their strength modifier tripled. This replaces the Martial Artist's Tough Skin, which gives damage reduction equal to one's strength modifier.

Stark said all damage reduction stacks.

Now, a Ranger/Spec. Ops/Martial Artist can get Perfect Armor and Tough Skin.

With a Strength of 16, this would give 25+3 damage reduction.

A Black Belt of equal strength with Toughest Skin would have 9 damage reduction.

The Ranger would stay ahead all the way until the Black Belt had a strength of 36, giving him a strength modifier of +13, and giving him 39 damage reduction. Perfect Armor/Tough Skin combo would give 25+13 = 39, as well.

From then on forwards, the black belt would have the advantage.

But, minoring in Martial Artist as a Spec. Ops means you'll never make Captain, which is more rangery and has some nice features of its own, including the ability to use HYPER BEAM as well as being an officer.
    >> Anonymous 04/28/10(Wed)20:52 No.9495919
    >>9495884

'scuse me. At +13 strength mod, the Ranger would have 38 damage reduction, edging under the Black Belt by one point.

    Black Belt/Weapons Master.

However, if you playing as an "average joe" trainer, then it wouldn't make sense, since i doubt you would have a weapon on you. Unless the class works on improvised weapons.

If it doesn't, go with black belt/ninja, or black belt/ aura user (although that would also ruin your "average joe" concept)
    >> Anonymous 04/28/10(Wed)20:55 No.9495986
Oh, and one more thing on the damage reduction issue - It's very unlikely a Ranger will have the Strength to keep up with a Black Belt anyhow. So this isn't as bad as it looks, really.

    >Plants and animals are those generally common to middle Europe. Beeches, oaks, and other deciduous trees constitute one-third of the forests; conifers are increasing as a result of reforestation. Spruce and fir trees predominate in the upper mountains, while pine and larch are found in sandy soil. There are many species of ferns, flowers, fungi, and mosses. Fish abound in the rivers and the North Sea. Wild animals include deer, wild boar, mouflon, fox, badger, hare, and small numbers of beaver. Various migratory birds cross Germany in the spring and autumn.

So, Snovers in the winter, a lot of grass and tree pokemon, Lots of the more freshwater-type fish pokemon, Spoinks and Swinub (for boars), Stantler (for deer), Vulpix (fox), Lopunny (Hare), Probably most of the derps (beavers, badgers, etc.). "Migratory birds" would mean a lot of the derp birds. Rats too. Rats are everywhere so Marril, Pikachu, Pichu, etc.

Pokemon that probably WOULDN'T appear would be tropical ones (A lot of the fish, a lot of the birds. Chatot especially) Obviousely un-european stuff like Girafarig and Hippowdon would be right out except as zoo exibits or special boss-pokemon belonging to the nazis.

That would be the guard pokemon. However I see most Nazis being issued fast pokemon. It fits the blitzkrieg type of warfare. French would of had defensive pokemon from the last war. Brits would have idk, but Americans once they enter would have mostly just the evee line as it allows mass production and speciality that the Americans had during WWII. I would also say psychics for communication something Americans excelled at. For the Russians I would have cheap and expendable pokemon like rattatas and raticates.

Weapons Master isn't really as well thought out as the rest of the classes. They automatically get the Master level Arms Feature for any weapon they want, but they get Slash as their second feature even if they choose bows or throwing weapons (the latter of which I'm sort of disappoint in anyhow, given Jugglers are supposed to use them but their damage is Int based, which martial artists get a penalty to... oy. Jugglers make up for it though with Weapon Rain so they can attack up to four times with Multitasking).

The rest of the class just gives you a few pokemon moves as features, which aren't that many.

If we overlay some standard fantasy races over the PTA framework, it would probably make a pretty bitchin' campaign.

Humans are the catch-all, of course.
Elves commune with pokemon easily, making them excellent Rangers or Breeders.
Gnomes are great artifacers, making good capture specialists or Researchers.
Dwarves are build like brick shithouses, making good Martial Artists.
High Elves are good with the forces they only know as "Magic" making them good Psychics.

    Any others?

    From archives:
Uncle Capture Specialist catches a strong wild.
Mother Breeder breeds a thorough-bred Egg and hatches it with their bonuses. The Breeder will push good moves onto the pokemon as it grows up.
Father Ace Trainer takes over from there and raises the baby with their leveling bonuses to make it really powerful.
Big Brother Psychic, Martial Artist or Ranger are always at its side while its training in the wild, always intercepting hits for the team's prized pokemon to make sure it's always safe.
Eventually, you'll have a super strong pokemon who would die for any member of the team, though it won't because it's so goddamned powerful.
At this point, Grandpa Researcher and Grandma Coordinator will use the prized pokemon against the Elite Four and in Master Contests, since they have the most features they can use in tournament settings.

    Do this with several pokemon.

    1. They thought it was a thread about the games, and didn't realize it was a homebrew system
    2. They thought it would end up like any other homebrew posted were it would either be dropped after a week, or be horrible unbalanced.

    Would you play this campaign?:

    Pokemon + The wild west.
Characters are wandering duelists/settlers going from town to town exploring the pokewild west.
Pokemon box does not exist, but 6-man team is enforced, meaning players are encouraged to unload pokemon they know they aren't going to use, either by eating them for survival, or skinning them for supplies, or selling them to fur traders or chefs for cold hard cash. Capture specialists are thus the cashcows of the campaign.
Trainers gain levels by beating each town's best duelists in quickdraw battles, which can and WILL be deadly (As you are aiming for the trainer before he can call out his pokemon. If you're not careful you'll kill him, but if you're not careful he could kill you.)

Basically Red Dead Redemption with the guns replaced by pokemon.

Plus, Ninjask can move something like 30 spaces per round while Machamp can only move, like six. Also, above a certain speed threshold, all movement capabilities go up.

So unless Machamp has some ranged attacks (which I'm sure he does, as physical ranged attacks exist) Ninjask wins.

Though, if you're too much of a dick about it, your GM'll just do a "Exploding Gravellers fall, everyone dies"

Also, to max out evasion though Speed, you'd need a literally impossible number of stat points.

Assuming a base stat of 10 SPD (pretty high), putting all stat points until lvl 51 into SPD would only get you a grand total of 6 evasion. That's still a lot, but it's not game-breaking.

    Yes, with some mild caveats.

By building like that, you'd have bugger all for attack and defense stats. This means you do no damage, and take a fuckton.

Also, you get only one Shift action per turn. This means you're limited to Ninjask's much weaker SATK stat and ranged movepool, since you can't risk getting close enough.

And, of course, wild Pokemon can just target the Trainer instead.

Hey, Axiom. Bringing up what I did in the OP - the rules for the Styler don't seem to exist yet. You know anything about that, or is that something that's gonna wait til the beta?
    >> Anonymous 04/28/10(Wed)22:34 No.9497849
    >>9497806

Doublechecking the rules, it seems that Ranged has no actual range. If the two pokemon are fighting, it seems it's assumed they're close enough for it to hit.

Also Rock Slide happens to use the attack stat instead of the special attack stat, as it has an asterisk.
    >> Anonymous 04/28/10(Wed)22:34 No.9497850
    >>9497529
According to the file I have, it's 16 base speed.

Add to that the fact that stat aces get two extra stat points in their chosen stat at levels divisible by 10, so assuming you take Speed Ace at level 20 or so, from 30 and on you get 6 extra points.
And then you get to add half of your STR mod (which is going to be pretty high for Aces) to each of your pokemon's base speed.
That's an easy extra +1 or 2 evasion at level 50 (On top of the +6 he'd normally have). Still not game breaking by any means, but ever so slightly better.

Now what IS game breaky is that Ninjask has Speed Boost on top of that. Every turn he survives he gets an extra combat stage to his speed, meaning every turn he gets that much harder to hit every turn. If it goes all six turns, you have (If I'm not mistaken) 200% of your max speed, THATS when you have something like +14 to evasion and you almost literally can't hit him with a roll lower than 16 for most moves, and 17 for a lot of the stronger ones.

I'll make sure to get some clarification in Beta on how the Styler works, cause it's not clear. In fact, I'll whip off an e-mail to Stark and see what he's been doing.

My best guess is that it'd take three trainer actions (three loops), and you can't attack or do any hostile actions towards the Pokemon. Probably throw in an varying accuracy check based on how pissed off it is. Keep it low, though, since it takes multiple turns.

Seven turns to set up. You've got a pretty decent (>50%) chance of being hit at first, an extremely real chance of taking a Swift attack up the ass, and a GM that's pissed at you for trying to break his game.

Also, remember that Baton Pass only transfers Combat Stages - not the actual stats. Your Combat stages will be based off of Heracross's SPD stat instead, making this build entirely a moot point.

I'm imagining a Ranger Captain on top of the Dragonite Bus, as it's making a mad offroad dash after Team Buttfuck.

Fourteen Pokemon line the top of the bus with the Ranger. Seven Helpfuls, one companion, and six Captured. The Captain takes out his styler and in unison they point at the evil team's mecha.

Fifteen Hyper Beams go off in unison and become as one.

Oh man. Use Type Soul on Shedinja. Ghost/Normal type Shedinja = Immune to everything but Dark attacks.

Which doesn't help TOO much since Dark attacks are pretty much already Shedinja's worst nightmare. But still its nice to get rid of those silly Bug weaknesses.

Thanks for the heads up Axiom, how the Styler works is below. About your starting packages idea: I think it's cool, I like it. What I let my players start off with was a backpack and whatever they brought in it with them from home (within reason). I keep a very close eye on player inventory in game. I don't want poke marts in my players' backpacks.

Range Stylers have 10 Energy in them. Any Ranger can recharge that for free at Centers, Marts, Police/Ranger departments. When a Ranger makes a Restraint roll, they roll 1d100 and must roll under the pokemon's Capture Rate. When making a restraint roll, the target's capture rate is raised 25, because unless you're making that pokemon a Companion they'll only be with you for a short while anyway.

The 1d100 roll is used for nearly every roll in this game that involves adding a pokemon to your team except for the Psychic's mind control feature (Capture rolls, Restraint Rolls, Egg Rolls, Possession Rolls). So if you plan to make other ways of converting pokemon in this game, try to use the d100 roll to make it similar to the other rolls.

Something like D&D is easy since all the players instinctively know what they should do- kill monsters, save people, get loot, grow stronger, repeat. But I have no idea what direction to take with this game... anyone have any good ideas to motivate players/build a storyline?

Well, the games themselves make for a good basic framework. Disregard females. collect pokemon. Earn Gym Badges. Fight off the team of the week. Beat the elite 4. Fight. Get XP for your pokemon. Build an asskicking team. Repeat.

There's still loot and people to save, and badguys to evicerate, but it's all done with a fine overlay of adorable cockfighting.

How I've run my two, starting-from-the-professor's-lab campaigns:
    Players start level 0.
Played 2-3 sessions with no goal in mind. Let Players choose where they wanted to go. They explored, caught pokemon, picked classes they wanted to shoot for, got a badge or two.
Next session: Hit em with world developments. They won't react immediately, they still want to catch pokemon and fight gyms. Let them, the world change won't effect them personally too much, and they are just starting off, what could they do to stop the world from turning?
Slowly integrate that problem's effects into their party. Add more side-effects of the event. Help players realize that something needs to be done.
Players will try to save the world, Gym battles and wild encounters a close second to their new primary goal.

I'll post some plots of campaigns I've run/plan to run in my next post.

Oh. Most important part of campaign ending:

So, your players saved the world/city/whatever.
They put so much effort into this that they've neglected the Gym Challenge or whatever they originally wanted to do.
In game, the campaign should have been less then a few months.
Elite four members show up to the public ceremony, honoring the players' public service and say, "Hey, good job fellas. How'd you like to participate in this year's pokemon league championship?." "But Bruno, we don't have enough badges." "It's okay. You're in."
    Time Skip
Next Session, place the players in different brackets for a 64 man championship. They'll need to put their skills against each other instead of with each other for (hopefully) the first time to see who wins it all. Winner gets a chance to battle the Elite Four to see if they are a Champion, or 'just' a tournament winner.

    Aaaaaand a few more questions.

    1. Does the "Guys, Watch This" (or whatever it was called) let you gain classes in the middle of battle?

    2. For the same feat, Can you gain more then 1 feat (or class) a turn?

    3. Does the Weapon Master class work with Improvised weapons?

    4. Can Rune Masters (or players in general) choose to have their Unown be 'backwards?' (like the bottem of an L facing left instead of right)

You need to have 2 Advanced Classes. Sorry for the poor wording. Thank you Axiom for editing my shoddy work. You're amazing.

    Plots:
Players fight Gyms. Player make it to Cinnabar eventually. Blaine's place got broken in to. Shit got stolen. No one cares. Oh wait, it was important stuff let's investigate. Off to Sinnoh. They found Galactic. Galactic killed one of the players. Galactic's building radio towers nation-wide. Using Blaine's stolen stuff to do so. Galactic tries to piss off steel types with sound waves that make them all rampage, it lasts for a few weeks. Eventually Dialga comes out from its dimension because it's so pissed. Cyrus tries to catch it. Players stop Cyrus and kite Dialga until it loses interest and returns home. Cyrus tries to get Deoxys. Players stop him by allying Deoxys. World saved. Championship time.

    Currently running this campaign:
Gym battling. Wild Capturing. Cheap ass poke balls from new company! Aqua in Kanto. Aqua kills Bill. Bill's heir dies. Pokemon Storage Company unowned. 40% of the population's pokemon are moved into the new cheap poke ball. Silph Co's president is murdered. Siplh Co's heir (a party member) is a target. Devon Stone is killed. Steven Stone (another party member) is a target. The cheap ass poke balls are missing 'submission' chips so the party is worried about what it will do for the nation's capture pokemon. There is a mad grab for power in the pokemon corporate world. Players find a lab where 10 assassin pokemon were forged for each big NPC in the world. They are trying to stop whatever Aqua's plan is right now. (More details as we play more sessions I guess.

The next campaign I plan to run:
First session: The top 8 of this year's pokemon league championships. Players will be allowed to be up to level 20. Have several different pokemon. Be way powerful.
After a winner is declared, and they get to fight the elite four their battle will be interrupted. A war will be announced by two legendary pokemon on TV and players will have to pick a side. The 8 players will split up and pick sides into two groups (I'm co-GMing this campaign with another GM) and the players will ahve to collect certain items for their legendarys since the legends are keeping each other at bay. Cults will form. People will work against both parties. The parties will work against each other. Time will be a huge factor. In game, only 2 weeks will pass before D-day. D-day will be the final session where they show up to the destined place for the all out war.

He took Steven and Steven is now still alive. For now. Steven's pokemon assassin is a powerful, genetically modified Blaziken. Perfect for defeating a Steel Master. He's playing Steven well and being a powerful asset to the team but is just as useful as other members in the party. The only thing he has that makes him REALLY useful to the party is his bank account.

I think it'd be easier to homebrew after I see the Beta. I plan to try and make a few classes, even though Stark has hit almost every base in terms of trainer types, but I'd like to make a 'magic' class. Stark don't care about other people's homebrew material. He's said that much in previous thread. Go for it, and if it's good the community will use it. Isn't that what this whole project is about?

Really? I guess you enjoy having horible balance, bad graphics, and shitty mechanics. There is litterally nothing good about them other then being nastolgic.

You can't even argue that those where the only games they planned. The original intention was for them to get out Red and green so that they could make Gold and Silver (which were planned from the beginning, this becomes even more obvious when ho-oh shows up in the FIRST FUCKING EPISODE)

I can understand not liking gen 3 and beyond. They changed a lot, and you couln't keep your old team.

However, Gen 2 has better graphics, Identical gameplay mechanics, AND fixes the balance issues of gen 1. You can even keep your old team.

There is LITERALLY no reason to only like gen 1, unless you are an elitest douchebag.

If it's a Ranger offshoot, maybe one of its class features should be gaining the ability to use Helpful pokemon in battle for a few turns before they run away. That + the Ranger feature that lets you command pokemon without needing to capture them would be pretty useful to the party.

    >>9501033 Alright. Here we go. I'll start with World History.

    World History
It is theorized that the Tunguska event was Mew hurtling to Earth. This is theorized by mapping the spread of the Pokerus combined with reported Mew sightings. At first humanity is unsure of the mutating flora and fauna that is spreading around the world, especially since some humans mutate as well. When an animal, whether human or otherwise, begins mutating because of the Pokerus they slowly start to lose their memories and speech capacity. When the process is complete, they remember nothing of their previous lives except for fleeting dreamlike impressions. On animals and plants, it twists them into pokemon similar to the animal they once were. Humans have some small resistance to this, but not much. As Mew spread around the world, so the Pokerus spread.

Children have to get inoculated against pokerus, those that don't are susceptible to becoming pokemon. So poor areas, such as Africa, have it running rampant. Pokerus is transmitted via saliva and feces of infected people and pokemon.

    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)02:02 No.9501101
    >>9501081

It isn't until the 1920s, when a vaccine to the Pokerus is developed, that Pokemon become part of society, beginning with the end of WW1 when the first regiments of Pokemon trainers appear. When WW2 began Pokemon were there from the start, with the German Blitzkrieg being revolutionary for its use of Pokemon.

However, WW2 was the end of large nations. The resources expended by the nations during the war left them unable to cope with the issues at home created by pokemon. Nation after nation fell apart, becoming city-states. Transnational corporations such as PokeCentre, and Police Corp began to rise and became one of the few constants in the world.

In 1964 the Elite Four arose in Osaka Japan as a group of Trainers who aimed to restore order to the world. They set up a competition system where trainers have to travel between cities to challenge the city's gym leader. This was done to encourage travel, and economic growth. The Elite Four are now an organization of 4 representatives from each continent who work together to keep civilization alive. The League Champions, who have been able to beat the Elite Four of their continent, are the enforcers of the Elite Four, though the Elite Four also has a veritable army of trainers and bureaucrats to support their cause.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)02:04 No.9501131
    >>9501101

Pokemon training and handling was revolutionized in 1964 when Kurt Mauser designed the first pokeball made from an apricorn in Germany. Apricorns were strangely wide spread plants that had been altered by the Pokerus but had not become Pokemon. This connection to the Pokerus is what allows the pokeballs to capture pokemon but not normal flora and fauna. This invention made catching Pokemon easy enough that almost anyone could do it, expanding the population of professional trainers greatly. Additionally the ability to store Pokemon indefinitely in an object the size of a baseball meant that almost anyone could own a Pokemon without having to worry about upkeep costs, so long as they could afford a Pokeball. However, Pokeballs were expensive as they had to be hand crafted. This meant that only the wealthy were able to purchase them, leaving the less fortunate to deal with the issues of feeding their Pokemon.

In 1978, with improved manufacturing means, the Poke Mart company created the first mass produced Pokeball. The mass production of pokeballs made PokeMart a rising company, and it was quickly subsumed by the PokeCentre Corporation. The decreased cost of the mass produced pokeballs (though they were still fairly expensive) created a second expansion of the popularity of Pokemon. The most recent revolution in Pokemon came from Bill Gates when he developed the PC Storage system in 1997. This allowed for Pokemon to be transported between locations over the internet while inside pokeballs. Unfortunately, due to the City State nature of the world, infrastructure quality is at an all time low, including the internet.

    >>9501131 Moving on to the Pokemon League

    Pokemon League
Everything is City-States, with Cities competing for the right to have a Pokemon Gym because they bring economic stimulus. A Gym Leader must come from the town in which their gym is located. A gym can switch locations if the Elite Four give a challenger city permission to send their champion to face another city's gym leader. Gym leaders have a wide range of pokemon, and save their best for Champions.

When a trainer encounters another trainer either is free to challenge the other to a battle. The trainer who is challenged gets to decide if there is a wager on the match, and what the wager is. Wagers can range from a friendly bet, to money, to equipment. Some trainers choose to make the wager the ownership of a pokemon, but this is discouraged by the Elite Four and can be refused without consequence.

Despite the fact that the Elite Four enforce the wagers whenever possible, many trainers who lose matches in the wild often become desperate over their loss, resorting to violence against their opponent. If that happens, the attacker is now a criminal and any injuries that follow are considered self-defence, or assault. The attacker can then be formally charged and imprisoned. However, such unregulated battles often result in fatalities in the wilderness.

Split evo. At level X it evolves into a pokemon with very balanced stats, that is decent all around, but not great at anything.

If at level X it knows at least 1 move that causes confusion, it gets dizzier, gains the ability that increases the chance of secondary effects, and works by taking the annoyance of confusion up to eleven, knowing attract, a few different confusion moves, a paralasis move, and stomp. but its stats are all over the place, making its difficult to actually train.

Armour and weapons that have no connection to a pokemon are not permitted in normal battles (for example, a cubone's helmet and club are allowed, but a machop with a sword is not). This is not a common issue in sanctioned battles, as outside items will not enter a pokeball with a pokemon. However, some trainers who do not use pokeballs provide their pokemon with armour and occasionally weapons.

Gym battles take the form of a one on one battle. The challenger and the Gym Leader each choose their single best pokemon and then battle with only those. This is to prevent a Gym Leader from succeeding simply through attrition.

One of the things I find interesting - technically speaking, there aren't always 8 gyms in a region [though there are usually 8 badge-bearing gyms]. See Saffron City's fighting gym, for example. The only restriction is that you must have AT LEAST 8 badges from a given region to enter its league, so each region COULD theoretically have more than 8 gyms.

Rocket Gang: The Rocket Gang is an organized crime group originating from somewhere in the former United States. They commit crimes such as arms, pokemon, and drug dealing to increase their wealth, though they often have a hand in most organized crime in North America, and there are rumours that they may be spreading globally.

Team Magma: Team Magma is a cult that believes that humanity's problems stem from the oceans and that if there was more land humanity would return to its once prosperous form. They seek out legendary pokemon and advanced technologies to further their goals, which are at odds with Team Aqua's.

Team Aqua: Team Aqua is a cult that believes that humanity is a plague on the land and needs to be washed from the world in a biblical flood. They search for legendary pokemon to remake the world into something cleaner. Since their goals are the opposite of Team Magma's the two cults often come into conflict, creating fatal battles.

Galactic: Galactic Corporation believes that humanity's future on the Earth is limited, and so they must expand into the stars. While not overtly sinister in nature, Galactic will stop at nothing to advance their goals.

Pokeball Smith: A smith is a person who knows how to make pokeballs out of apricorns, as well as repair, and modify standard pokeballs.

Pokemon Breeder: A breeder raises pokemon often from when they hatch for the purpose of breeding them to make baby pokemon. They know how to take especially good care of their pokemon which helps to make the pokemon more loyal.

Pokemon Ranger: Rangers defend Pokemon from people, and people from Pokemon. In towns too small to afford the services of Police Corp. volunteer Rangers protect the citizens from pokemon, and from criminals.

Specialist: A specialist focuses on a certain type of pokemon, learning all they can about that one type. Often they mimic their preferred type in some fashion so as to better understand their pokemon.

Coordinator: Coordinators collect pokemon not for battle, but for performance contests. To enter contests often a certain etiquette must be followed, lending the Coordinator to being a skilled diplomat.

Researcher: Researchers are interested in pokemon for the sake of knowledge. They learn everything and anything about all pokemon. While Researchers may not have as good battle skills as Specialists, they often know far more.

Bandit: A world of nation states leaves a lot of land unclaimed, and a lot of roads unsafe. Criminals regularly prey on travelers, using whatever weapons they have, whether it be gun, club, or Pokemon. Bandits are often skilled in a combination of stealth and brutal combat.

The ability you're thinking of is Serene Grace.

With that in mind, I like the name "Zenda". Maybe give it a black/white split spot pattern too?

The "even" one should be... Blanda. I dunno. Though keep in mind, Zenda's stats being imbalanced could actually make it a better poke than Blanda because hyper-specialization is a very good thing currently. Who knows, gen 5's metagame may throw that out the window.

What other pokes need help. Third stage for Marowak, Exeggutor, Dugtrio and Electrode, maybe? What would be this gen's useless bug type line and moderately useful normal type two-stage? Its fossils? It seems pretty hard to compete with Bidoof.

Exterminator: In a world with insects and mice that can easily maul a person, the formerly simple job of being an exterminator now belongs to a grizzled few veterans. Though Rangers may try to provide this service, there's no one as good at it as an exterminator.

Psychic: Sometimes the Pokerus has strange effects even on inoculated people. Psychics are the most common form of this. Most psychics have a low level telepathy that they can use to communicate with their Pokemon, but there are some that can read human minds, and a few who can simulate some Psychic Pokemon attacks.

I think it makes more sense as an advanced class for Capture specialist, and it seems a little too powerful to be an early-game class. Seriously, stealing shit from other trainers, that's pretty hardcore.

Breloom fits that description save dinosaur (and that is arguable).

With the starters, I'd like to see what gen4 almost did. Make their secondary type super-effective against the starter that beats them. So following that, it'd be something like Fire/Electric, Water/Poison, Grass/Ground or Rock. Probably Rock, since Grass/Ground was done but so was Fire/Fighting. It could also use the Dark/Fighting/Psychic thing, which you did, but in the opposite direction.

I'm trying to have 1 new advanced class per Class during the Mystic update and I've yet to have a 'new' class for the Capture Specialist. Maybe you folks could make it if it's not too ridiculous.

As for the Nature-Paladin, that could be an interesting addition to the Ranger as an Advanced class.

After Beta is out after all, P:TA will be one giant community project with as much content as there is contributions.

For the people asking about stealing the teams pokemon, I was thinking this: The act of snagging a pokemon is what creates a shadow pokemon, since they have to be moved to a new pokeball, which causes severe mental trama. A Shadow pokemon will randomly go into a rage, where its movepool becomes limited, it can't learn new moves, and it is also confused. Being near its actual trainer will ALWAYS activate this, so stealing a teamates pokemon will render the pokemon useless to you.

You CAN steal gym leaders pokemon, however, since gym matches are heavily spectated and guarded, you will be killed before you even manage to leave the gym.

    SUGGESTION TO THOSE MAKING SNAGGER:
POKEMON CAN ONLY BE CAPTURED IF THEY DONT LOVE THEIR ACTUAL TRAINERS. But jsut cause they're being saved by you doesn't mean they automatically like you. Add these few clauses to how the Snagger works or it will be hell for the GM as the Snagger runs around stealing everything from normal trainers.

Maybe not 'love'. The pokemon that are allowed to be snagged should have at least have a negative tendency towards its owner in order for it to be allowed to be caught.
This, plus Halfwing's adaptation of Wes' snagging in Colosseum would look pretty spiffy. They shouldn't be Shadow pokemon though. They should rage though, and I mean that literally. They should mindlessly use the Move Rage unless they are calmed down and converted.

Paladin stuff. How are these for the basic features: (Keep in mind, I thought these up with a fantasy campaign in mind)

Smite: Probably a Daily power. I kinda thought this up with Alignment in mind even though I know PTA has no alignment. Pretty much a melee attack by the trainer that does "Super Effective" damage against someone of opposite alignment.
Or OH! It's an attack with extra damage powered by the types of their patron legendary! So if you're a Paladin under, say, Lugia, your Smite will do somethingDsomething of Dragon/Psychic damage with appropriate super-effectiveness or resistance as needed.

    Righteous Fury:
Your voice is filled with the vengeance of your patron. Pokemon you command are willing to fight for you.
Effect: Pokemon with the "Helpful" title have four of their moves revealed to the Paladin, who may command the helpful pokemon to attack. An attack by a Helpful pokemon counts as its action, and it is released after performing it.

Quick and dirty writeups. Any ideas?

I would like to ask something should smite come back sometime, that being... do you have a rough idea on a release date for the beta?I have worked on a few homebrew games with a friend or two on this line but never really got too far with it... not in a d20 sense anyways but your game seems to have mad crazy potential... honestly I'm looking foreword to this more than I did spore, and dear god was that a let down but you know... no pressure? haha

Cool, but I am currently leaning to the Team Grunt class. Any ties to capture specialist just seem so broken.

However, If you need a new Capture Specialist class, How about something involving seals? They would give a bonus to apperal in contests, and could even give a small effect in battle when you send out your pokemon, weaponizing the pokeballs (Fire seals could cause some minor burst damage, Petals could heal nearby allies, Smoke could lower enemy accuracy, etc.)

Goddammit. What skill is it? If Paladin requires Ranger/Mystic to get Maybe the Paladin just gets an upgraded or tricked out version of it.

Why is this still being discussed?
Any class can be an evil class.
Whatever. Stark's all 'everyone can make anything and play for fun, lol' which is good in theory. But, then jackasses will just fuck up common sense.

Well, maybe instead of An attack, it would be more appropriate to get a defensive skill instead.

    Divine Armor:
    Static
When taking damage from powers exhibiting a type, the paladin is considered the same type as its patron legendary, and applies weaknesses and resistances as appropriate.

Become a patron to, say, Registeel, and weapon attacks without alignment (Which I would assume default to normal type) would be "Not very effective."

    >Spore
I WAITED SIX GOD DAMN YEARS FOR THAT GAME!

I CHECKED THE 3 DIFFERENT FAN SITES TWICE A DAY EVERY DAY!

    ...
God damn it maxis. You had created the best god damn game the world had ever seen. You created what was literally the perfect sandbox game. I could take the delays, at least you were working on it.

But then you tried to get rid of that teen rating, and lower it to an E...

You had so much potential. You had nasa begging to see what a terraformed mars look like. You had robin williams create a creature so vile, that the game itself crashed to prevent it from having kids. You created a game that could be sold to hardcore gamers, while still being used in Biology, Psychology AND History classes as educational material.

And you threw it all away. Just to get a slightly broader audience.

    Maxis, I am dissapoint.

So, peanut gallery, any more ideas for Paladin (It might need a more pokemon-y name, by the way, but Paladin is an okay placeholder) and Snagger?
    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)04:01 No.9502610
    >>9502579
Snagger requiring a bad relationship between the trainer and pokemon seems to be the easy way to handle it. I'd personally set it as a capture specialist, and just throw on a ridiculous capture rate penalty.

For paladin, how about a feat that allows you to hit for super effective damage against things your patron is weak against? Assuming the Paladin is meant to be fighting either alongside or in protection of the legendary, it would make sense that the trainer would be able to cover the legendary's typing.

Say, if your patron is Registeel, Your special attack would deal super effective damage against things that are strong against steel. So your attack would hit Fire, fighting, and Ground types for super effective damage.

    >Why are there corrdintors if everyone can enter contests? Why are there capture specialists if everyone can catch pokemon? Why are there ace trainers if everyone can battle? Why are there researchers if everyone can learn stuff? Why are there breeders if everyone can breed pokemon? Why are there psychics when everyone can... Okay... That one doesn't work... But you get my point.

Anyone can join a Team. The Team Grunt is just the best fit. They are the ones who practice evading the law, stealing, and litterally getting away with murder. So when the group has to do one of those, anyone can do it, but only the Team Grunt can do it with no risk of drawing unwanted attention or getting caught.

Not an idea, but would combining the Ranger skill "No Restraint" (Lets you command pokemon without capturing them) with "Righteous Fury" work? That seems like an awesome move combination and I want to know if it is in fact, doable.

The problem is if you don't have to restrain the pokemon, are you given an opportunity to learn the 4 moves? Maybe if you tell the pokemon to attack with No Restraint, it uses an attack at random since you did not specify? Seems like something that should be cleared up before people get confused.

I suggest a skill somewhere down the line that lets you do that thing Team Rocket does in the games once you kick the boss's ass, where the screen goes dark for a split second and when it comes back up the entire building has been abandoned.

What would the other advanced classes for the Team Grunt be, if I may ask? With a little overview for each idea?
    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)04:32 No.9502953
Paladin needs to do something with his companion. Maybe he can change his Companion's typing to the patron legend's, or learn a signature move. The implication being that the Paladin's companion pokemon is turning into an avatar of the god.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)04:33 No.9502960
You know, many people seem to be keen on running a war themed campaign. It would be fully possible to create new advanced classes around that concept.

Ace trainer advanced class: Veteran soldier.
The veteran soldier has seen his fair share of battle, and cannot be phased by the horrors of war. No fear, no hesitation, just the orders he is given. He is always one step ahead and one level above his enemies, and little takes him by surprise.

Breeder advanced class: Mass breeder. The mass breeder specializes in creating pokemon not for himself, but for use by total strangers. Pokemon bred by the mass breeder will treat any master as if he was bred by him.

Capture specialist advanced classt: Snagger. The snagger appreciates the bond one must have between pokemon and trainer, for he knows exactly what waits for him if that bond is broken.

Oh shit. My companion just learned Roar of Time. All y'alls are fucked.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)04:34 No.9502969
    Coordinator advanced class: USO.
The USO uses his pokemon to keep morale in the front lines high. He also serves an

active role in assaults, his pokemon's powerful demonstrations demoralizing enemy

    combatants.

    Martial artist advanced class: sniper.
The sniper uses his pokemon from hiding, firing ranged attacks such as sonic boom

and psychic without being traced back. It is not an easy feat, though, and the

sniper and his pokemon must be as one.

    Psychic advanced class: warmind.
The warmind knows the the two most important parts of a battle are knowing the

enemy and knowing yourself. The warmind uses his psychic abilities to predict the

enemy's movements and to make sure his enemy cannot predict his.

    Ranger advanced class: Guerrilla.
Even in times of war, wild pokemon far outnumber the trained. The guerrilla

specializes in using massive amount of wild pokemon. Though it takes a great while

and a great many guerrillas to assemble a great force, they can easily turn the

    tide of any battle.

    Researcher advanced class: forward recon.
The forward recon takes him knack for memory and applies it to war. With a glace,

he can determine the size and power of an entrenched position, even if none of the

pokemon are sent out. The forward recon has an amazing knack for quick and

photographic memory, as well as a knack for insightful reading of people.

Well, earlier someone suggested Con man, Snagger, and Executive. I was also thinking of including a class that deals with making your pokemon hate you. And possibly a hacker. It needs play testing anyway, so I'll just see what my players come up with.

Also, depending on what I can come up with, I might make a Stalker class (anime team rocket)

One of the Class feats I have in mind is being able to survive lethal attacks, with the upgraded version also applying to your pokemon. Although for balance reasons, I will probably make it so you can choose the be unkillable from special attacks, or physical attacks, but not both.

"Hasty Retreat" If you are caught while attempting an illegal action, Roll 1d20. If the result is higher then 10 (needs testing) you may avoid all concequences. The action you were attempting is automatically failed.
