Sigourney was fine as hell in that shitty movie. Strangely, I don't find her attractive at all in Alien, probably largely due to my hsitef for plumber's crack. Aliens, on the other hand... Then again, that was probably thanks largely to the powerloader fight. Yum. No, I don't think anybody was actually attracted to the Heylistens. I know some people claim to be, but I've also noticed that those same people were the hipsters who tried to get me to turn my metal down, then, the moment Brutal Legend came out, asked me to hook them up with some, ugh, Metallica mp3s.

Navi, the fairy from Ocarina of time, always shouting "HEY! LISTEN!" right in your ear? I figured, you know, they share a name, and are even more annoying, I'ma call them Heylistens. I rename shit, sort of my token shittoss at pretentious douchebags. I also refer to the protagonist of Twilight as Bertha Duck. Or were you wigged out by the reference to Brutal Legend? It's a video game, all about Heavy Metal and the fantasy settings with which it shares an inspiration loop. The Poser Squad was pretending to be metal after it came out, because they'd decided they liked it without playing it, because it was made by the guy who made Psychonauts, a game they also never played, but heard was really good and didn't make any money, so must have been indie. They then proved they have no taste by implying that Metallica was good before they sold out, when any metalhead could tell you Metallica never sold out, they were just always shitty, then they started making money and producing boy bands. I hope that explains my post, and doesn't overload your caffeine-fried brain. On the bright side, it could just be that my brain lacks sufficient caffeine to post coherently.

Excerpt from Pandora Incident Report: Administrator Selfridge Reporting

After the disastrous loss of life and material due to the failed eviction of the Na’vi, I made the difficult decision not to attempt to hold Hell’s Gate. Although our automated static defenses were quite operational, the death of Colonel Quaritch and 70% of SecOps combat staff made it abundantly clear that any attempt to resist the Na’vi would only result in further loss of mission critical personnel.

After overseeing successful regrouping aboard the ISV Venture Star, I called a meeting of all surviving high level staff to discuss our next move. Although the Pandorans had allowed us to take as much as we could transport with us into orbit, we had no means of replenishing our food supplies while offworld. Moreover, the Venture Star did not have enough cryobays to accommodate all employees, either to make the return voyage to Earth or to stay in cryosleep until the next starship en route arrived. A unanimous decision was made by all upper level staff. Drastic action had to be undertaken to ensure the survival of not only the over two hundred employees under our care, but also the future of the entire Pandoran colonization and mining effort.

Orbital surveillance revealed that the victorious Na’vi had all gathered around the “Tree of Souls” in some sort of ritual. In attendance were several former RDA personnel, including the now infamous “Jake Sully”. Understand that the actions of these defectors led directly to the deaths over 100 RDA personnel. Colonial law is clear on the authority of colonial administrators in sentencing under such circumstances.

    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)21:19 No.9516870
Using EVA suits and industrial mining equipment we had taken with us from the surface, we detached one of the ISV Venture Star’s twin engines and reattached it to a landing craft, which was then rigged to be controlled remotely. I understand that nearly half the Venture Star’s monumental cost is contained in its engines. I further understand that RDM currently owns only ten such interstellar vessels. However, weighing the cost of one ship, no matter how expensive, against several hundred lives and the colonization of the most valuable world currently known, well, what else could I have done? Moreover, had we not taken this drastic action, all ships en route (or sent during the five year delay before any report reached Earth) would have been similarly stranded in Pandoran airspace, lacking fuel for the return journey and with little means of obtaining more.

While the Na’vi were still gathered at the “Tree of Souls”, the refitted landing craft was accelerated by the full power of an interstellar engine towards the planet’s surface. The impact event utterly destroyed the “Tree of Souls”, as well as the approximately 2,000 natives gathered there, and the remainder of the human defectors who had “gone native”. This was all done within 24 hours of evacuation.

The effect of this attack was immediate and more drastic than I had dared hope. Apparently, the late Dr. Augustine was correct in surmising the tree’s pivotal place in the greater Pandoran biosphere. After the tree’s destruction, a mass die off of native flora (and thus fauna) occurred in a radius of approximately 350 kilometers. Moreover, all surviving Na’vi fled the area. Orbital surveillance revealed that entire tribes relocated in response to this event, presumably to other areas with surviving floral networks.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)21:20 No.9516882
    >>9516870
Thus, less than two weeks after being driven from the planet’s surface, we found ourselves back in Hell’s Gate. Moreover, due to the mass die off of native plant life and relocation of natives, many previously inaccessible mining sites were now quite open. The fact that we no longer had to constantly fight against encroaching flora, and travel in strength due to hyper-aggressive fauna, provided further savings. Concern over another assault by Na’vi in response to the destruction of the “Tree of Souls” proved to be unfounded. The Na’vi had learned a harsh lesson, and now they strenuously avoid any contact with human machines or personnel.

In conclusion, any censure for my actions should be taken in light of the following projected earnings report:

"The Planet is a vast Sentient Organic Computing Network" is now one of those "Not Cannon, but makes the movie better" theories, like Neo never leaving the Matrix.

The Planet is fully aware of what's going on, and the instant it knew just what it was up against, it struck like the fist of an angry god.

Look at the thing. All of it's eco-systems are so perfect.... unlike Earth's biome where as it was said, it was a billion year cage fight to the death, all the creatures on Pandora exist at the Whim of Eywa. What does it care if "cells" die, so long as they're replaced? All the creatures are programmed to behave in a certain fashion, including the Na'Vi. There is no real free will. Just a cold calculated precision. Hell, it probably messes with their brains every time they uplink in order to make sure that their "Operating System" is running right.

Which means Jake Sully was lured by the Siren song of the Na'Vi, and then was indoctrinated by the foul Xenos when he allowed the malicious planet intelligence to access his brain.

    Eywa is now Xenomorph-tier evil.

    The arching sky is calling
    Troopers back to their trade.
ALL HANDS! STAND BY! FREE FALLING!
And the lights below us fade.

Out ride the sons of Terra,
    Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps a race of Earthmen,
Out, far, and onward yet ---

We pray for one last landing
    On the globe that gave us birth;
Let us rest our eyes on the friendly skies
And the cool, green hills of Earth.

Glassing it from orbit is like nuking a city. There's no chance of survivors and everything dies, and will stay dead for the next several decades.

Marines go in, blow things up and secure the site. Plausible chance of survivors/prisoners, surrounding eco system might eventually recover. Also restoring the blasted areas will make a great political/charity campaign someday.

Not really sure, but the Japanese were strongly considering surrendering to the Allies once the Soviets started marching towards them. Can't say it's true or not, just that the surrender of Imperial Japan was just a matter of time, full-scale invasion of Japan or not, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombing or not.

The troops in the movie were just private security, with dinky ships and limited man power. On top of that, they weren't TRYING to exterminate the Na'vi. Imagine actual military (or whatever passes for it in that setting, shit, PMCs?) with ships meant for glassing planets orbitting slowly, the Na'vi defenseless to do anything except perceive the incomprehensible horror of their doom.

I usually don't go to /tg/ and I didn't understand why you hated Avatar so much. But it recently occurred to me that you guys are mostly just jealous. Sure, some of you might not have actually liked the movie and are just lashing out because you find its popularity annoying; that's reasonable.

But I bet at least 80% of you are just upset that you could never create a campaign half as engrossing as Avatars. Do you think you could ever convince your group to sit through three hours of railroading and PAY you $20 for the privilege? You rely on cheap gimmicks (because, no matter how fun it is, interacting with the story IS a gimmick) to keep their attention and even then you fail half the time.

That's why you buy books to take your campaign setting from, because you're so desperate for approval from your fellow gamers and you know that you have a shit-tier imagination so you're willing to spend money on supplemental sourcebooks. Cameron was able to make a movie that reached millions; he poured his heart and soul into the project and people are clamoring for more. Your shitty little campaign will reach the eight people in your group and they're calling you a shitty DM behind your back.

Maybe you're scared to really put yourself into a campaign and you need to tear down anyone who does. You rely on "LOL! MR T IS A LICH!" or other pathetic, lolrandum bits that you can use to claim that you didn't really take the story seriously in the first place when your PCs mock you.

But Cameron had the guts to make an epic; maybe you'll do that too, someday. But first you'll have to come to terms with your own failings and stop trying to tear down Avatar.

    Sincerely, /tv/.

Seriously. The movie was great the first time I saw it when it was set in 1800s midwest. When set on magic floating mountain planet it was not nearly as good.

How exactly were the characters strawmen? The Na'vi had an oppressive tribal monarchy dieing because of the clan leaders' conservatism. The humans were fleeing a planet in its death throes thanks to a selfish, materialistic culture that destroyed its own environment and was forced to pray on others. Jake Sully was the only one willing to experience both worlds and attempt to merge the two.

Strawmen are typicaly one dementional charaters whos soul existance is for them to prove a point.
Case in point the general in avater or the business man (I would look up their names but I really can not care) both are strawmen in their one dementional charicterisation and are thusly defeated during the plot providing the loser analogue for the Science vs Nature metaphore that the film was attempting to cram down its viewers throats in addition to the Race War tale.

At first I though you were going to make an interesting, introspective point, but then the obvious troll started, and then you showed your ignorance. Sure, you might just be fine on /tv/ vegetating as you watch amazing worlds pass your screen, but the reality is that we're not satisfied with that, so we make our own worlds. You'll find that very few of us actually use published material. Our greatest stories come from our own imagination, our greatest achievements molded by our players, and only mediated by our DMs.

But are we jealous? Yes, we are. We are jealous that the Na'vi have everything. We are jealous that they are given their strength and power on a silver platter. We are jealous, but because we had to work for everything. Each level our characters build, each point of favor paid for in blood, sweat, and tears, against our fellow or even the nature herself.

And do you know what? That's the only way to do it. To put yourself into everything you gain, to fight for every inch is so much more gratifying than going for miles downhill with the wind at your back.

You see, we are jealous because the Na'vi did not have to work for their contentment until we came. We are jealous because they can be weak, so we cannot stand their weakness and thus put them to the test of steel. Instead Cameron had them pass it by divine intervention and continue along their way without perturbation. They could not even pass a test of their existence without the answers being handed to them. They are as spoiled children when we have had our childhood innocence ripped from us in the cruelest ways. Of course we are jealous, they don't even deserve it.

Sir, he did more for the working man and NATURE PRESERVATION than any president before or since. Sure, his cousin Franklin brought forth the new deal, but that's because it was a time of crisis. Theodore MADE his legacy. He was a proactive president that went forth and did shit for the benefit of the little man worker. Theodore Roosevelt IS modern domestic progressivism. I'd like to see a better president actually carve something with the purest motivation of altruism and uplifting the American people without a crisis or war above his head.

Roosevelt is the example of how an American should carry himself, why wouldn't we idolize him?

He is possibly the most quintessentially American man I can think of. Boisterous, gregarious, loud, brash, charismatic. An explorer, a peace-maker, a hunter, a killer. He viewed the world as his playground, and every other country as an unincorporated American colony. Love him or hate him, no man before or since has been as uniquely American as Teddy.

His nature preservation cannot really be compared to later environmental policies. His was only a superficial fix, it protected land and animals from direct threats. The policies of Nixon, for example, were arguably more effective but lacked the ooomph of creating a parks system. Clinton didn't take office during a crisis, in fact he presided over one of the safest periods in modern American history. He still went and made his own legacy.

No, he's right. Roosevelt believed deeply in American supremacy, and was constantly frustrated that, not only would other countries have the gall not to accede to his demands, but that his fellow countrymen didn't even want to go to war and claim them for his own. He believed, fervently, that America should assert itself militarily as a world power, and that other nations were simply roadblocks to be run over. He fought hard to achieve war with Spain, he worked to annex the Phillipines, and he treated the Caribbean and South America as property of the United States. I do not agree with what he did, but that doesn't stop my respecting him.

Hey /tg/, I don't know what this thread is about but I see you are talking about Teddy Roosevelt? Should I start dumping my political cartoon folder?

Ah, there's your problem. The word 'deserves' is a tricky one. At the end of it, no one really deserves anything. That aside, have you ever thought that they might genuinely like Roosevelt, not just because it's funny? He strikes a peculiar chord with people, and, even if they disagree with him and don't think his contributions all that meaningful, they can't help but be fascinated by the man.
