    Hear me now
Oh thou bleak and unbearable world,
    Thou art base and debauched as can be;
And a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled
Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee!
    I am I, Don Quixote,
    The Lord of La Mancha!
My destiny calls and I go,
And the wild winds of fortune
    Will carry me onward,
    Oh whithersoever they blow.

    To Dream
    The impossible dream
    To fight
    The unbeatable foe
    To bear
    With unbearable sorrow
    To run
Where the brave dare not go
    To right
    The unrightable wrong
    To love
    Pure and chaste from afar
    To try
When your arms are too weary
    To reach
    The unreachable star

    This is my quest
    To follow that star
    No matter how hopeless
    No matter how far

    To fight for the right
    Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
    For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
    To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
    To reach the unreachable star

The author originally intended the character to be a mockery of one who read too much of the time's romantic novels. The fanboy of that time who decided to live by the unrealistic standards of his characters from the fiction he admires.

The fact most people admire and sympathize with that character, gives me hope.

It's also important to point out that Miguel de Cervantes fucking lived that life. His life was full of adventure and chivalry. The author GK Chesterton wrote an essay about this (http://chestertonandfriends.blogspot.com/2006/05/true-romance.html) that I really like.

Essentially, Cervantes was a fucking hero. He ran away to sea, and fought incredibly bravely, heroically, in a number of battles, never giving up despite severe wounds. He was captured by pirates, but never gave in to them - tried to escape four times, and behaved incredibly admirably at all times. And then he gets ransomed and goes home and denies the existence of adventure or romance.

We have sufficient advantages over our enemies that are borrowed and not truly our own; it is the quality of a porter, and no effect of virtue, to have stronger arms and legs; it is a dead and corporeal quality to set in array; 'tis a turn of fortune to make our enemy stumble, or to dazzle him with the light of the sun; 'tis a trick of science and art, and that may happen in a mean base fellow, to be a good fencer. The estimate and value of a man consist in the heart and in the will: there his true honor lies. Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of the courage and the soul; it does not lie in the goodness of our horse or our arms: but in our own. He that falls obstinate in his courage- "Si succiderit, de genu pugnat"- he who, for any danger of imminent death, abates nothing of his assurance; who, dying, yet darts at his enemy a fierce and disdainful look, is overcome not by us, but by fortune; he is killed, not conquered; the most valiant are sometimes the most unfortunate. There are defeats more triumphant than victories.

Victrix causa diis placuit, sed victa Catoni.

When we are in the tavern,
we do not think how we will go to dust,
    but we hurry to gamble,
    which always makes us sweat.
    What happens in the tavern,
    where money is host,
    you may well ask,
    and hear what I say.
    Some gamble, some drink,
    some behave loosely.
    But of those who gamble,
    some are stripped bare,
    some win their clothes here,
    some are dressed in sacks.
    Here no-one fears death,
but they throw the dice in the name of Bacchus.
First of all it is to the wine-merchant
    the the libertines drink,
    one for the prisoners,
    three for the living,
    four for all Christians,
    five for the faithful dead,
    six for the loose sisters,
seven for the footpads in the wood,
    Eight for the errant brethren,
    nine for the dispersed monks,
    ten for the seamen,
    eleven for the squabblers,
    twelve for the penitent,
    thirteen for the wayfarers.
To the Pope as to the king
    they all drink without restraint.
The mistress drinks, the master drinks,
the soldier drinks, the priest drinks,
the man drinks, the woman drinks,
the servant drinks with the maid,
the swift man drinks, the lazy man drinks,
the white man drinks, the black man drinks,
the settled man drinks, the wanderer drinks,
the stupid man drinks, the wise man drinks,
The poor man drinks, the sick man drinks,
the exile drinks, and the stranger,
the boy drinks, the old man drinks,
the bishop drinks, and the deacon,
the sister drinks, the brother drinks,
the old lady drinks, the mother drinks,
this man drinks, that man drinks,
a hundred drink, a thousand drink.
    Six hundred pennies would hardly
    suffice, if everyone
    drinks immoderately and immeasurably.
    However much they cheerfully drink
we are the ones whom everyone scolds,
    and thus we are destitute.
May those who slander us be cursed
and may their names not be written in the book of the righteous.

Though I am not continent myself, I nevertheless sincerely approve the continence of the Feuillans and Capuchins, and highly commend their way of living. I insinuate myself by imagination into their place, and love and honour them the more for being other than I am. I very much desire that we may be judged every man by himself, and would not be drawn into the consequence of common examples. My own weakness nothing alters the esteem I ought to have for the force and vigour of those who deserve it:

"Sunt qui nihil suadent, quam quod se imitari posse confidunt."

["There are who persuade nothing but what they believe they can imitate themselves."--Cicero, De Orator., c. 7.]

Crawling upon the slime of the earth, I do not for all that cease to observe up in the clouds the inimitable height of some heroic souls. 'Tis a great deal for me to have my judgment regular and just, if the effects cannot be so, and to maintain this sovereign part, at least, free from corruption; 'tis something to have my will right and good where my legs fail me. This age wherein we live, in our part of the world at least, is grown so stupid, that not only the exercise, but the very imagination of virtue is defective, and seems to be no other but college jargon:

    "Virtutem verba putant, ut
    Lucum ligna:"

["They think words virtue, as they think mere wood a sacred grove."
    --Horace, Ep., i. 6, 31.]

"Quam vereri deberent, etiam si percipere non possent."

["Which they ought to reverence, though they cannot comprehend." --Cicero, Tusc. Quas., v. 2.]

Not a paladin but my flirtatious swashbucklers heart would swell with such pride if she heard this song.
As self-important and narcissistic as she is, she basically lives by this notion.

She can't stand the thought of how selfless she has become and so she hides behind an exterior in hopes it would drive everyone away.

The rest of the party coax her into action by threatening to inform everyone about this.

What started off as an opposite of sorts to a messiah complex has become the longest running joke in the group.

Still, she scored some free paladin abilities as an (as yet unnamed) goddess has been closely watching her good deeds. (Despite it not being in any deities name)

first part. Keep in mind the original is much better worded, and it rhymes so it rolls off really easily. But the general gist is like this. Tell me if you want to knwo how it goes on.

    Don Quixote

I've read a hundsand (this is hard to translate- a pun with numbers that makes a nonexistant word that seems a really high number, a direct quote from the book) stories about errant knights
of undertakings and victories of the just against the overbearing
[so I can't] stay anymore shut in this room with my books
like a lazy coward deaf to all suffering
In this world, today more than ever, injustice reigns
and you don't hear about heroic knights anymore
for this reason, Sancho, we need more than anything
a fit of generosity, even if it's a crazy dream
Go fetch my saddle, for my daring commitment
I swore to my fair one, Dulcinea del Toboso
and to you Sancho, I promise to give a castle
but I'm not hearing rebuttals, come on, saddle my horse!
You'll be my squire, my comforting shadow
and with this pure heart, with my shield and Rocinante
I'll strike down injustice with my spear day and night
as surely as in the Mancha I'm called Don Quixote

I love playing Paladins. The main reason is the concept of looking at overwelming odds and certain death, but not yeilding to it because you know that you are doing the right thing and nothing will turn you away from that.

I wouldn't mind DMing this. But I warn you /tg/ I would make your paladins lives hard. You may even fight amongst yourselves. I would be as cruel as the real world and punish you just for doing the right thing.

    Sancho

This madman is sick, he needs a doctor
It's not worth it to argue with him, he's always in a fool mood
He's the saddest person ever born on Earth
fearless knight of a solitary war
waged for love of a no-name woman
met in a brothel where she works as a whore
but he believes he's seen a true princess
and at all costs wanted to sear an oath to her
And so we've been kicked in the ass for days now
we don't know where we are anymore, we don't have food nor drinks
and this wild madman who's more naive than children
just yesterday got struck down by windmills
He's stubborn, idealistic, his head is full of dreams
I'm more realistic and I'm content with a castle
He'll make me Governor and I'll have plenty of land
as surely as I have a heart as well and I'm called Sancho Panza

    Don Quixote

Spring on your feet Sancho, it's late, you can't sleep any more
only cynics and cowards don't wake up at dawn
for the formers it's because of indifference and contempt of values
for the latters it's because of reluctance to do one's duty
Injustice isn't the only evil eating the world
Even the souls of men have plumbed to the depths
we must hurry because the more time passes
the more shadowy the foe becomes and the knot gets tangled

    Sancho Panza

    Talking about shadows...
Yesterday when he saw those harmless sheep
he attacked them like they were an army of Moors
but wasn' it obvious, my lord,
that even the shepherds would bit us with their dogs?
Maybe I am a cowards and sleep all the time, but I'm not a traitor
I believe only in what I see, and reality is
the only thing by which I abide, as surely as now I'm starving!

    Don Quixote

Sancho listen to me, please, I was a realist as well
but nowadays I just don't care and even if my sight is good
the appearances of things don't deceive me
I like much better the surprises of this tyrant soul of mine
that shapes with tricks the reality in front of you
it opens your eyes and lights you up
Before, I was bored and wished to die
but now I'm a brand new man that's not afraid of suffering

    Sancho Panza

My lord, I'm a poor ignorant man
and I didn't understand much of your abstract speech
even if bravery could manage to erase my laziness
would only the two of us be able to bring justice back?
In a world where evil is commonplace and always wins
where "money" reigns today more ruthlessly than ever
could this nag and this useless squire
be able to checkmate the "power" and save the whole world?

    Don Quixote

Are you saying, Sancho, that I should just back down
because "evil" and "power" look so gloomy?
That I should give up my dignity
be humbled and accept a reality like that?

    Together

"Power" is the trash of human's history
and even if we are just two romantic wrecks
we'll spit our souls in injustice's face day and night
we're the "Great Duo of the Mancha"
    Sancho Panza... and Don Quixote!
yeah the singer is a bit of an anarchist, but the song is good. Sancho and Quixote are totally bros.

You dare doubt the Paladin and the great test of the night? That is a foolish assumption, for we are the ones who stand against the darkness, we are the ones who laugh, sing, and spit at the face of evil most foul. We are the ones who stand tall against forces that would break us, never to bow, never to bend nor break. We are your bulwark against invaders. We are your torch to the dark forest of this world.

We are your Paladins, /tg/; never doubt our strength, our courage, or our vigilance.
