Here you sit, reclining against a pile of rubble, armor black with soot and red with blood. The fortress, at long last, has been taken, and its would-be conquerors captured or destroyed. As the dawn sun begins to climb the distant hills, a fine mix of red and orange lights the remains of this poor fortress. Its tall black tower, felled and broken, litters the courtyard with crumbling black stones and shards of iron. Its once-proud defenders, overtaken by the enemy, now fuel the pyres that burn against the daylight.

The few that survived owe their lives to you. With the destruction of the tower, the prisoners were released from its arcane magic, and those that could be recovered are being tended to by the faithful. Karius, the man you personally rescued from the torment of the spike, has been fully healed, and wishes to speak with you.

He is not alone. The vast majority of the valiant force would clamor for your attention, were they not restrained by their commanders. Erivrus, though separated from you by death, of all things, requests your ear from the safety of the realm of the gods. Through all of this, the gods maintain an open link, appraising you of all you might wish to know.

The frost demon has reached Kharok. A sudden burst of anti-scrying spells greeted its arrival, shutting out a great expanse of the frigid North. Siskiv and your other companions wish to join you, but the particulars of their transport are up to you. The sergeant, as you know, is grievously injured, though recovering. Seven fortresses on the Western edge remain under Forusian control, all with non-active towers. Perin's main forces will arrive at the fortress line within two weeks.

Frost Giants are extremely resistant to the elements, are unaffected by cold, have strong immune systems, and find cold/ice magic very easy to learn and use. They are unfailingly accurate with thrown weapons, but extraordinarily vulnerable to fire.

Mountain Giants can survive at very high altitudes, are resistant to physical damage, and benefit from a naturally calm mind, making them resistant to fear, among other things. They tend to be magically attuned, but are vulnerable to various evil forces.

Hill Giants are the offspring of Mountain and Frost giants. Most favor one side or the other, with very few being exact half-breeds. They are extremely long-lived, highly resistant to cold (though not immune), incredibly fast and agile, and naturally skilled with earth magic. However, most are afflicted with emotional problems, as they inherit a quiet, contemplative nature that is at odds with their other, aggressive half. It is common for them to succumb to schizophrenia within 50 years. Most are sterile.

Having him come back is probably for the best, but we should make it clear to him that his contract has been fulfilled. Anything he does from now on is his own duty, and shouldn't be dictated by us. While having him join the fight is good, if he wants to retire and be a farmer we shouldn't stop him. As for what he comes back as, a being that can learn and understand Forusian fire magic will be helpful in understanding what they've been doing.

Why don't we make a lot of giant-sized bladed discs with a convenient hole through the center, make a few hooks to hold stacks of said discs by their holes, and attach the hooks to an easily-reached part of our armor?

Maya's hands should be like 3 times human size, so assuming the diameter of each bladed disc is like 1.5x the length of her hands, they should be like 20-30 inches across, depending on the size of her hands relative to her body.
So in battle Maya would have a ready supply of bladed projectiles two to three feet across apiece that could be thrown easily and with unerrind accuracy. They'd do less impact damage and have less momentum than our cannonball shotputs, but there's something to be said for having a ranged weapon that cuts and penetrates on-hand at all times, for whatever situation might arise where we would need them, which are given automatic success as a thrown weapon.

Like Batman with his batarangs. You DO want to be Batman, don't you, /tg/?

Thankfully, nothing else requires your attention. The past few days have been tiring, and you're happy to get as much rest as you can before the next ridiculous event. You sleep for what seems like a week, secure inside a sizable tent beside the ruined fortress. When you awake, you are pleasantly surprised to learn that it's only late afternoon, and, though your muscles ache, you feel restored, and fully able.

At the request of the soldiers, you're allowing your armor to be scrubbed, one piece at a time, just in case you need to suit up quickly. While walking around in blood-encrusted Magma Steel surely makes you fearsome, it also surrounds you with a rather... disturbing smell.

Supper consisted mainly of piles of standard rations, in the absence of shops, taverns, or any good hunting. The soldiers were very eager to make you feel like 'part of the group', sharing stories of battle and stupid, if humorous, anecdotes, as well as useless knowledge. In such an environment, morbid humor is rampant, and you didn't particularly want to know that the Ulls occasionally eat the dead after an engagement (Forusians taste of bacon), or that Sergeant Lloe had to do some incredibly unsavory things to survive in a western swamp.

In the end, you survived the morning, telling of your first encounter with a DoD, and your troll-slaying adventure in the forest. The men were suitably impressed.

Given your skill with alchemy, your aid has been requested in the rebuilding of the fortress walls. Orders?

Done. You spend several hours assisting with construction, sharing your knowledge of architecture and working with the few alchemists that came along. All of them have skills surpassing yours, but none can match the sheer amount of energy you have without magical aid. Being a giant gives you a serious advantage in stamina.

By the time night falls, the fortress walls have been reconstructed to the point where they can withstand some serious firepower, but they are still incomplete. You notice that many of the soldiers seem to have an aversion to fire, handling torches with extreme care and preferring to stand some distance from them.

You make ten, forming them from carbon-steel, with six blades and holes in the center for holding. A short, curved hook emerges from the ground a moment later, and you consider grafting it to your armor.

Ask for the next time we make a shield we should have it with an outer layer of Tungsten as suggested above but that should be attached to a Silica ceramic backing. The handle would be made of of the same stuff. A straignt tungsten shield would be plenty tough but it's a conductor and since we're fighting fire mages mostly the whole thing would heat up and burn our hands, suit or not.

Obviously, you will need something to hold these disks, and it would be nice for that something to hold other useful items as well. Pressing your hands to the ground, you imagine a utility belt, rugged and exceedingly useful.

    >16

Steel snakes up from the ground amid green and gold shimmers, shaping itself at your whims while curling like a charmed cobra. First chains, then plates, strung together with shiny hinges and sporting a heavy buckle. On the front, a hammer and sickle are inscribed, colored faintly white and blue. On the back is Hretmar's rune, and all around are modular attachments for tools, pouches, or weapons. The bladed disks hang lightly off of a snap-clip on your right side, waiting patiently for torsos to sever.

Most who watched you make these things are now examining their own equipment with disdain.

The towers are fueled by death. It is expected that their process could be stalled by removing the prisoners without killing them. It should also be possible to fell them with explosives, but these would have to be placed within the walls, since an active tower is nearly invulnerable to attack from outside.

The towers, like the summoning horns, incorporate an acoustic component, which is the drumbeat you've heard. If this could be disrupted, the towers could be stalled from a distance, but so far no one knows exactly how to go about this.

    >>9534665
No problem. You've described the characteristics of the being in the picture, remembering it from your days of surfing the chans. The forge god likes it, and thinks he'll work with it. There's no telling how these things, if they're even possible to make, would act without a guiding soul. Since the engine is being designed as a replacement body, it might not function at all without someone 'inside' it.

    >>9534832
Unknown. You have described the concept of destructive resonance, and the gods think there is some merit in using it, but they don't know exactly how to do that.

Speaker design is fairly simple, in principle. You could attempt to make one, if you want, and since you have a reliable source of electrical power in the form of the magelock, it would be easy to test.

The hammer and sickle DON'T specifically represent communism, collectivism, socialism, or anything of the sort.

    The hammer represents LABOR.
    The sickle represents FARMING.

These things have been Maya's primary tasks since day 1, armed combat, fun as it is, is a sideshow to our industrial efforts.

The hammer and sickle together represents industry, workers and peasants.

Bolshevists co-opted the symbol because they believed they represented the workers and peasants and their interests. Not the other way around.

An equally appropriate symbol for Maya? The right-leaning swastika, it represents rebirth, progress, growth, violence, rapid change, violent change, basically all the positive aspects of Shiva. The left leaning swastika, of course, represents peace, stability, tranquility, serenity, and plenty. So the Nazi swastika would also work.

Another symbol that Maya could use? The Terran Empire symbol from Star Trek's mirror universe. It shows the world united by the sword.

Or maybe the Federation's symbol, laurels circling around a field of stars. Victory extending across space.

Or perhaps an arrow shot into the moon, with a motto like "pierce the heavens." Representing technology crossing the heavens themselves. Over time this symbol could lose the arrow-shaft and be modified to look exactly like Starfleet communicator-badges from The Next Generation.

Black and yellow liquid oozes from the earth, combining with a fair amount of dirt and rising like a small tower, shaping into a black box with thin walls. The front of the box sinks inward, becoming a cone that appears to transform into something like canvas. Inside the box, coils of wire combine and seat themselves, extruding two ends which are enclosed within small connectors jutting out of the top. Almost as an afterthought, a curved handgrip materializes on the top, just your size.

The soldiers hoot and holler, all within range dropping what they are doing to see your arcane device. A brief test with the magelock produces a high-pitched squeal from the speaker box, causing everyone to cover their ears and wince. It works.

We tried, we aren't strong enough to change the runes by either physical OR magical means.

What I'm wondering is if the local teleportation block works by blocking the gods' ability to see what's going on, or if it blocks all their powers totally.
If all divine power is blocked, then blessed items should lose their blessedness, right? Or at least whatever benefit sanctification gave them.
If they just can't get a transporter LOCK, though, that gives us some interesting possibilities.

The humans are impaled in spikes on a tower.
So if the gods were able to teleport shit, but couldn't see what specifically they were teleporting, then I suppose they could teleport, say, everything at impalement height to a new location.
Which would retrieve the soldiers and spikes, while leaving the tower they are impaled over intact but removing it's power source.
I saw Geordi do something similar in several episodes of Star Trek where transporter locks weren't working but they knew the approximate location of what they wanted and put the information in manually.

The field surrounding an active tower, as well as that generated by entities summoned by the horns, blocks the sight and influence of gods. Teleportation, among other powers, cannot be used on objects or people inside the field. The pantheon could try to brute-force their way through it, as they did to show you how to get out of the other realm, but this would require a lot of power, and might not work, or it might make things worse. Such an action might feed the tower, for example.

    Relax. Three things.
    1. We already made a speaker.
    2. A university full of bright minds was recently given both the equipment and the idea to make a radio; they should make a moving-coil microphone and working speaker system soon enough.
    3. We can make a resonator guitar out of steel right now.

Once the radio system is functional (which, eh, could involve a lot of passive use of magic or enchanted items, for now) we will be able to modify the resonator to act as the mobile stage in a microphone, and then hook the whole damn thing up to a speaker. Or just have the microphone pick up the noise inside the guitar. Or whatever.

The limiting step at this point is that Maya doesn't know how to make a microphone of any sort. Once that difficulty is resolved, we WILL become a true METAL alchemist.

Arc lights have very good light to heat ratios, so you get a LOT of photons for the energy input instead of a lot of bulb heat but a comparatively dim, humanly-usable light.
Arc lamps, for this reason, are used in high-intensity lighting situations where incandescents would melt and short out.
Which means that if, say, you want a beam of white light--a very bright, very powerful beam--or you want a high-intenisty photon pump for a laser's gain medium, you go with an arc light.

Also arc lamps simulate natural lighting better, instead of the somewhat more limited spectrum of normal lights.

The downsides of arc lights? They burn out relatively quick, are often waaay too fucking bright, yadda yadda yadda.

Tungsten and silcon. Tungsten and silicon. The alchemy band probes the earth for materials matching your preference, returning results as fast as you can move your focus. Pockets of minerals open themselves, shift, recombine, and head for the surface, splitting into thousands of pieces like a subterranean rainstorm.

Scales push out of the dirt, linking together like chainmail. Solid plates extend and connect, their backs covered with thin layers of heat-resistant ceramic. The exertion of manufacturing all of these components makes your head hurt, draining you considerably. But you continue, making a suit of armor worthy of the hunter.

Vest and greaves of scale mail. Armguards, gauntlets, boots, and helmet made from interlocking plates. Tungsten and carbon mixed together, heavy but difficult to pierce, backed by silicon-based ceramics, for heat resistance. Unfortunately, you were not able to make a full suit, but coverage is sufficient, you think, for the moment. Once he adjusts to the weight, you'll add to it.

Oh good. I was worried we'd need to do some magical repairs on it.

You know, if we end up with a lot of spare time between each attack on the towers we could probably alchemy up some thin chest plate that could be given to some of the other soldiers. I'm sure they'd like ANY kind of fire protection they could find.

Can we spend some more time with Kel?
I'd like to maybe move on from hugging to more personal matters.

Do the Forusian Soldiers or Fire mages have armor that looks anything like this?

No. They seem to favor light armor suited more for mobility, with helmets incorporating grill-type faceguards. The mages usually wear robes, not armor.

I'd rather hoped their fire mages would be wearing robes and no metal armor. Maybe some sort of magic armor, but leaving the metal armor for the nonmagic types.

    Want to know why?

Electron guns do not penetrate Faraday cages. Conductive materials only carry charges on their surfaces. And full metal enclosure would provide a conduit for electricity to travel to the ground without going through the target's body.

When we killed the Fire Giant, Subprocessor DM did it right, he had us tear open holes in the metal armor and THEN shoot our daggers into the exposed flesh. If we shot him while he was still perfectly enclosed, he'd have just been seared, instead of becoming the main charge carrier between the anode to the ground state.

Something like that, but leaving the eyes exposed and uncovered. Their helmets seem to be equipped with movable visors, but those are rarely down.

Honestly. Yeah that IS the storybook ending and the fairy tale ending and all that, but "and then everyone died" is ALSO a pretty typical fairy tale ending, I just don't see any particular motive to ASPIRE to it, y'know?
