    248 KB Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures Misconductor !!qa7ceFN5eKO 05/03/10(Mon)12:07 No.9586540
Hey /tg/! This weekend I decided to gather some buddies up to try out a game of Pokemon Tabletop Adventure, and while some info was not available (Some capabilities descriptions I had to make up.) the game went amazingly well, and the game is intended to go on for a few more weeks!

To make a simple summary of what happened, I had four players: Three that started out, and one that came in later on. The first player chose to make an ace trainer/martial artist build and started (After much consideration on my part.) with a Sableye. The second wanted to make a Capture Specialist build, and she started with a Zubat. The third is making a Breeder build, and started with a Gulpin. The fourth trainer came in later on and is on the path of making an Ace Trainer/Psychic build, and started with a Totodile.

I decided to have the game take place in Kanto to keep it simple. Six years after Red/Blue, and three years after Gold/Silver. The trainers started in Viridian City, getting thier pokemon from the rather kooky Professor Fig, whom needed trainers with attitude to gather information on pokemon via pokedex so he can get funding. And since the party were the only ones to show up to get their pokemon (Not many parents trust his judgment, since his last group of hip young trainers got swallowed up by a Gyarados.) they got pokedexes, and one got a pokegear.

    (cont)

Well things started smoothly. The three went to the Pokemon Center and were sent on an errand for the doctor at the Center. After a tutorial trainer and the party's first wild encounter (The Gulpin Trainer stabbed a pidgey and crippled it... Then caught it.) they met Professor Oak and the fourth party member. The Gulpin Trainer traded a pidgey and bidoof for a Slowpoke, and the four returned to Viridian, and the Sableye trainer met Gary Oak, the Viridian Gym leader. The trainer attempted to punch him, but Gary dodged and smacked him pretty hard in the face. The trainers decide to move on to Pewter City. After some encounters and catches in Viridian forest, they meet at the gym, and each face Brock. Brock kept them on their guard by switching up pokemon used each battle, but so far every trainer has done well in facing him. The Zubat Trainer is the only one that needs to battle him, and that will pick up next game this weekend.

    The current roster:
    Sableye Trainer-
    - Sableye
    - Squirtle
    - Zangoose

    Gulpin Trainer-
    - Gulpin
    - Shellder
    - Slowpoke

    Zubat Trainer-
    - Zubat
    - Combee
    - Shinx
    - Shroomish

    Totodile Trainer-
    - Totodile
    - Mankey
    - Feabas

Overall, I was amazed on how much fun everyone had with the game, even if it was only in Alpha. Mr. Stark, wherever you are, I want you to know that I, and my players, are more than eager to see the beta of P:TA completed. Already the game has proven to be one of the most fun we have played in a while!

tl;dr: Post your Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures thread.

How exactly does that work? I mean are pokedexes some kind of super artificial intelligence that is capable of instantly analize recently met pokemans?

The way I see it, pokedexes are able to analyze pokemon that you catch like new data into a computer. That's why you don't get any REAL info on a pokemon in the games unless you catch it.

I have the primary villains setup, but at least one of my players wants to shoot for champion, what should i do, a bracket like in the series? or perhaps the elite four then the former champ? What level of involvement should the champ have on the story?

Well if one is shooting for champion, a good way to pull a twist is to make the champion ominous and difficult to identify. This allows you to have the champ stroll around in public without too much media hassle, and also have the player meet the champ without even knowing him/her. It makes the reveal that much of an OH SHI- moment. Especially if you make it someone they would not expect.

As for the league, I always imagined it being tournament style, either round robin or bracket styled. The winner then gets to face the elite four, and finally the champion.

Alternatively, you can allow the party a chance to ALL win round robin style by gaining enough points in the league, and then each member faces an elite four member before getting a shot at the champ. However only one person can get a chance to become champion.

And as for the champion status itself, it is suggested that you keep your status secret to prevent constant random challengers on the street and media hassle. Along with that, I'd thing champs would get a special status, and all that make it as far as the elite four would get access to the Battle Frontier.

    Just my suggestions.

    >>9587739
You could even have a stand-in, fake 'champion' who's a friend of the real one.

thanks man, i was kinda going with a helpful figure being the big reveal as champ.

Also need some ideas for gym leaders, i currently have two ways to win at a gym, through battling or to impress the leader.

current leaders and impress conditions i have now are

Dark type: must be able to confound and misguide the opponent

ground type: Using one's brawn and stamina to muscle the opponent and use his strength against him

Water type: using the weather and water to your advantage (fought in a harbor, uses rain dance alot)

Fire type: also the beauty coordinator, must impress with stylish moves

Fighting type: Use hard work and guts to overcome

need three more leaders with three more conditions. any ideas /tg/?

The big selling point to get the guys that play my game to play was that they had the option of being in Team motherfucking Rocket. (They have yet to do so though. Some prefer to stick as normal trainers even!) Giving options that nearly EVERYONE has been itching to try out is a great way to get them interested.

Also, offer to allow unique starters. That helps a lot.

The rules, like combat and character creation, are scattered in the archived threads, sadly, and take time to gather up. Took me a while to get the rules set up, but it was worth it in the end.

There is a list of base stats your pokemon can have. For every level you add two points to any stat(s), as long as they stay in order from least to greatest. Natures alter base stats by 2. So a nature bumps one stat by 2, and lowers another by 2. This changes the order of the base stats and helps you change how you want the stats to roll.

    Ahhh.

You start with Str, Con, Dex, Wis, Int, and Cha. Using a 64 point-buy system, you can add the stats wherever you like, so long as all of the stats have a minimum of 6 on each. HP is the CON score times 5.

There've been a few threads that explored stuff like that. Some of them might even be archived on sup/tg/.

My favorite was Pokemon set in Nazi Germany. A team of Americans stranded behind enemy lines have to liberate eight pokemon-type themed POW camps, before escaping back to allied territory.

There was a large emphasis and encouragement to use and buff up your rifle alongside your pokemon, even though against most pokemon your rifle ain't gonna do shit.

So in honor of the game I was thinking we should come up with some gym leaders that might work for your particular setting.

One I was thinking of would be a woman named Metilina. A steel type gym leader who has a Steelix, Aggron, Metang and a Skarmory. She's have this real cog/clockwork design going for her. With a hoopkirt that had a cog like design at the base and cog shaped earnings.

Another could be a Gym that's also the Pokemon center and the leader is the Nurse Joy of the city.

I am actually intending on using a dragon user as a gym leader, and making the most charismatic badass of the eight, encouraging you to fight on with sheer will and determination, yet showing no mercy n the process. If he is about to win, he will ask a question before giving the finishing blow.

    Fun fact:

Using Breeder features, you can force your metapod to learn attacks other than harden.
You can also breed so that the babies get some stat bonuses.

Essentially you can actually raise a team of six metapods and actually have a kind of workable team. Or six Magikarp.

For the WWII setting, each "Gym leader" is actually a German officer in charge of a different POW camp which must be liberated. You can, of course, liberate the prisoners without alerting the guards and get away scott free, but to get his dogtag (Badge, and the signifier of another level-up for the party) you have to successfully assassinate the officer to cut off the head of the german forces in the area.

I don't know german, so I can't come up with any German puns, but I did daydream a Flying-type encampment that has constant patrols from the air, so if you approach the camp without taking steps to conceal yourself you'll be spotted by the flying border patrols and forced to either fight or flee.

The Officer would have a Skarmory and a Honchkrow, and if you don't take care, he'll get on the back of the Skarmory before you can get him and force you to fight his other five pokemon, as well as waves of soldiers and the soldier's pokemon (Which you don't want to do. because you'll probably die.)

Here you go. Non-playtested, not particularly edited, incomplete fluff, and probably either broken or underpowered, but here it is.

tl;dr: It's an extra Advanced class for the Ranger basic class. Essentially, the trainer swears himself to one of the legendary pokemon, and gains their divine favor. Your main gimmick is that any helpers you pick up through your Ranger feats have four attacks revealed to you, which you can order the pokemon to launch (which is normally impossible for Rangers except with the Companion).

Their other gimmick is that they get a couple feats that reflect whatever legendary they roll with including a Divine Blessing wildcard feat, and "True Divine Avatar" which essentially turns your companion into a mini-me version of the legendary.

Opinions are appreciated, I think this trainer class + one of the more overpowered or Evil legendaries would make an excellent instant BBEG.

Pic related, because you can swear yourself to Missingno (At a steep penalty)

It's not a bad skill at all, though, especially if you wait for the right item to come along before you start using it. If I understand corrected, the first use of the skill doesn't subtract from your "Deleted forever" countdown.

Well, I'm not at my computer at the moment, so this is all off of the top of my head, but the snaggem class is an advanced class of the team grunt class.

Snagging a pokemon causes extreme mental trauma, turning it into a shadow pokemon.

Shadow pokemon usually end up being more dangerous to themselves then to others, but it is fairly easy to purify them.

However, they cannot be purified near their original owners, and will become even worse when near them, so stealing a teamates pokemon ends up causing more harm then good, with a pokemon so damaged it will likely never recover.

This is to stop those assholes in the group who would steal all the partys pokemon, just because they can.

Well probably give the Grunt capabilities suited towards stealing Pokemon even if they're owned by others. Give them bonus damage using trainer attacks against Pokemon. Maybe they can even call for support.

The Executive should probably be similar to the Ace Trainer in boosting their Pokemon's capabilities.

Halfwing, I want you to understand beforehand that I am in no way against any players making homebrew classes. I encourage this and hope to see several new things that my team would have never thought of. My aim here is to understand your take on the Snagger class. I'm playing devil's advocate. The reason being, during the Mystic update, all existing classes will get one or two new Advanced Classes. After the last few threads we've decided upon reworking the old "Snagger" that was originally an Advanced Class of the Capture Specialist.

In order to make sure we are working towards different ends, I'd like to know more about the intentions behind someone who is your version of the Snagger. You see, I intend to make a Snagger available to good natured trainers. I believe that given any class, you may RP them as bad or good.

A Ranger can abusively call pokemon towards them, but if they are also a Chaser, or a Chaser is on the team, the Ranger suddenly has a way around their rules and can trick innocent pokemon into becoming their tools. Good or evil.

This 'Grunt' Class can have uses for the evil RPing group, don't get me wrong, I'm sure some may have fun with the Class you are making, but it seems to limit the freedom that other classes have: The option to do good OR bad.

That said, the Snagger is pretty much what I've mentioned before in previous threads. We're retouching it so anyone can use it as an Advanced class of the Capture Specialist. What is different about your own?

As a suggestion; here's how I handle my Pokemon league championships:
Place players in separate brackets. Eventually, it'll be the bunch of them at top four (hopefully). Only the winner of that gets to fight the elite four. Beat them, and that player IS a pokemon league Champion. A Champion they fight afterwards is only for exhibition. They shouldn't lose the right to be a champion, just because they lost to a previous one, it's a huge let down.

Another way I've seen suggested is to have players make it to the top four, and round robin from there, the winner getting to fight the elite four etc.

Find what works best for you.

I really need a new name for the team grunt. The basic idea is that, while most of the rocket grunts you fight are this class, but it is not limited to them.

Instead, the grunt is someone who, on their own, are extremely weak, and no threat. However, they have trained specifically in fighting as a team, ganging up on the enemy.

Snaggers are able to take this aa step farther by fighting with pokemon that aren't even their own, and are little more then mindless killing machines. You can play as a ruthless player like Silver, stealing any pokemon that could further there goals, or a heroic character like wes or... that other guy... who only captures pokemon who are abused/ already stolen.

That sounds...more appropriate really. Otherwise the "villain" class is merely a hodgepodge of all of the others. Quite frankyl, the Grunt could be considered a separate Basic Class with the addition that it can act as a pre-req for any of the evil classes or that it's needed alongside the non-Grunt pre-req class.

Ace -> Executive seems pretty fair to say, though Exec may belong solely to the Grunt instead.

An evil Coordinator may excel at scaring or intimidating opponents to either running away, freezing up or wildly attacking. Or the Investor gets an expansion...

Martial Artist and Psychic both seem to be naturally inclined to go either way. Alternatively, the Martial Artist can become a Thug and excel at personally damaging other Trainers or Pokemon. Hex Maniac or Influential seem already fit for the Psychic.

Breeder and Researcher can also be flavored to go either way.

Well, having read that I think we are working towards different things. I just don't want to release the Snagger in the Mystic update and have it look too similar.

That said, I agree that a change in name would repel a lot of the negative stigma the 'Grunt' class seems to receive. As it stands, when a pokemon player sees it there is no way their mind would not immediately go to those 'bad guys'.

That is every single other class.

    > are little more then mindless killing machines.
    Makable with every other class.

I'm with Stark with this. You need to seriously make a way for Grunt to define itself as an ENTIRELY separate class. Otherwise, you're better off not adding it to an already massive batch of trainer options.

I did think about that, however, that seems to sperate it into "Good guys have to play this, bad guys have to play this" which would make it annoying for playing someone like Wes or Silver, bad guys who turn good. Or someone like Michael, who uses underhanded tactics and steals pokemon, in order to give them better lives and fulfill noble goals.

There are other classes that benifit in fighting in a group as opposed to 1 on 1? I didn't know that.

As for the mindless killing machines, that is not the normal "Okay go attack the enemy" kind of pokemon. That is the kind of pokemon that is just as likely to kill its trainer as it is to fight.

I think the problem is that everyone automatically assumes that if you take this class, you are automatically a member of the local Team, or that if you are a member, that you are automatically this class.

That is not the case, hence the need to rename the class.

Because the default classes are so broad, there's not much room for a Grunt class. I don't see any specialties other than summoning other Grunt trainers. Maybe Grunts get a special stipend like Jessie and James get.

Organization Member as a class name instead maybe so that potential non-villainous branches could be like Officer (Law enforcement) or Businessman (probably too much like the investor) or Organization Official (expanded bonuses to the Org. Member feats and the ability to boss them around)

That is not the same thing. Not even close.

That is team synergy, having one classes strengths make up for anothers weaknesses. This is a trainer who, when alone, is unable to fight, but gains strength near his friends/allys. His pokemon actually grow in power while near his teamates, not just letting his teamates take care of what he can't.

As for the Shadow pokemon... I'm guessing you have never played the colloseum games. These are pokemon so mentally scared that they are little more then weapons at this point. It doesn't attck you because you took it from its family, or because it doesn't respect you, or because it you are mean to it. It attacks you because at this point it is no longer a living, thinking animal. It is a killing machine with no emotion, unable to do anything BUT kill whatever is standing in front of it.

Whoop! Glad my thread is still rolling!

Anywho I JUST got out of DMing a solo game with the Sableye player online a second ago. To make things short: He, along with an select few pissed wild pokemon, took on a level 75+ Garchomp that somehow (Has to do with story) ended up on Mt. Moon. He earlier wanted to gather the masses at Pewter City, but most, save for Brock, were much too frightened to take it on. Hell the majority of the wild pokemon were too terrified to attack it. With an army of clefairy doing metronome, the mountain ended up with a hole being blown into it, all the pokemon save for one, and Brock getting knocked out, and the player even getting his guts slashed open by the Garchomp. But in the very end the wild pokemon once too terrified went in and ganged up on the dragon type, saving the player's life as his vision faded to black...

He eventually woke up in a hospital, and is slowly recovering. Needless to say, the balls to stand up to a 75+ Garchomp while he was only level 3 got him a level up as a trainer.

Well, Snagging it is what makes it turn into a shadow pokemon.

So snagging a pokemon turns it into a shadow pokemon, however, when snagging a pokemon, you take a huge penalty to the capture.

This penalty and effects does not apply when snagging a shadow pokemon, and you are entirely capable of purifying them. Doing so is basically rescuing abused pokemon.

Hell, there is no doubt this class "should" be evil. But every time it has showed up in the games, it has ALWAYS been a good guy.

Yep! I intend to use the suggestions. I used the suggestions that you made for gyms a few threads back as well. It made Brock look less like a easy win and more a challenge, especially when he whooped some trainer ass with the surprising use of a Shuckle and Probopass in the gym battles. (Since they were challenging him in a row, he switched one pokemon every match to keep the battle refreshing and challenging. The Sableye trainer did NOT expect a Probopass and a Kabuto, to say the least.) All the trainers still won though, even though there were some VERY close battles.

In one of the other threads I mentioned an idea for a capture specialist advanced class (before you settled on Snagger) that focused on using Seals to weaponize their pokeballs and alter the battlefield.

    >Seals for and advanced class
I think it's an interesting take on something that most players seem to forget exist. If you can complicate the class without making every feat 'seal X does Y', I'm sure someone will give it a try eventually.

As for the dislike your homebrew class is getting: Don't take it too hard. Take it as constructive criticism. Early threads for this game, before they even began getting archived, were basically just me getting stomped on by /tg/ saying what a stupid idea this all was. Don't scrap the thing; just carefully look at what they would want to see in your class. Granted, a lot of them seem to be saying they don't want the class at all, but the biggest thing other then that is that they want a new class to be able to define itself from the rest of the 9 classes we've already set up. Not an easy feat, but doable.

Also, just because certain people will never try it don't just throw it away. I'm not going to lie and say I think it's a great class idea, because it looks like it still needs a lot of tweaking for it to be its own unique set of tricks, but if you put time into it, you might as well post it in it's own thing in the future. Maybe someone will take a look. You never know, that person might be looking for whatever you make. Besides, the first I heard of your homebrew class was what, last week? It's not going to be good in that short of a time. If you really like it, follow through with it.

If I stopped just because the first few posts in my original threads were "Sounds stupid" or "Go back to /v/" this project wouldn't be where it is now.

I tried it. Keeping track of +6 PCs per player sucks for the GM. I didn't like that since I normally GM/DM. This system's first goal was to streamline pokemon into an extension of the Trainer. As a GM, I appreciate the simplicity even though there are several bodies on the field at any given time.

I''ve also been tooling with a homebrew campaign as well, interpreting the rules as best as I could in their current state.

What I've tooled around with is having the trainers start with a 10 in all of their stats, to basically have the feel of a "normal person" beginning their trainer career. By level 7 they'll have their first actual class. Currently there's enough "feats" without prerequisites to support this, even though it may be six or seven. They're feats early trainers should have nonetheless.

They want to run it as close to the first season of the anime and pokemon red/blue as possible. Watch ash the first 70 episodes. The dude doesn't even win his first gym battle, he's given his badge because he made brock have an emotional thought that wasn't "fuck everything with tits that moves."

I'm sorry it sounds boring to the power gamers. They're power gamers themselves, but hey. Pokemon's about striving to be the best trainer. At age 10 each person can get their first pokemon to begin their training career.

Sounds geeky, sorry. Was watching the first 20 episodes yesterday and today to get a feel of what they want.

Yeah, but you want tabletop to run in such a way that a trainer could go to any gym first potentially. Catching a ferry south to Cinnabar if they wanted. Each gym should be a challenge.

It's what they want. So what they want, they'll get. Yes, electricity defeated the Onyx. But Ash literally tortured his Pikachu to do so. So if they want to hook their pokemon up to a water wheel while they themselves run on said waterwheel for several hours to generate lethal voltages, more power to em. I'll allow it.

If we're throwing real world logic into a fantasy game, it's been proven that rocks have the potential to generate electricity. For instance, Graphite.

Lets not forget that metal comes from ore, which are contained in rocks.
    >> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)03:07 No.9602444
Hey guys, not to rain on your parade, but rock takes normal damage from electric attacks. Onix, however, is rock/ground, and ground is immune.

Yet if a player of mine is willing to torture their pikachu to be able to inflict damage to it, I'll totally allow it.

But since Pikachu isn't one of the starting pokemon in this homebrew, the point's moot. I was simply using the anime as an example on how one could get around immunities if they went to the extreme.

As a bit of background, I did intend it to be a hybrid class between the Ranger and Mystic, but since the Mystic has not been released and we don't really know too much about it, I've just decided to divorce it from the Mystic for now, and just have it be a Ranger class.

Once Mystic is released (Which won't be for a while I'm sure) you can consider the Paladin's Prerequisites to require both Ranger and Mystic.
