    Well, fuck me running, /tg/.

I promised a friend of mine that I'd show up for a game of something he called World Of Darkness because he said he was a player short. I know fuck-all about pen and paper games. Normally, I'd just head to /b/ and hope for the best, but I already tried that and it ended about as well as one would expect.

Mind giving a reformed troll a crash course on making sense of this stuff so I can at least try to fill the position until he gets a better replacement?

Some research into the topic has revealed that it's Hunter. From what I understand, it's supposed to be about brutalizing the shit out of anyone that isn't Average John Q. Public.

I'm aware that I could just wait until Sunday to ask my friend about how it's supposed to work, but the dude's running the game and I'd hate to slow things down for him with "WHAT IS A D10," followed by "HOW DO I MAKE CHARACTER," and "WHAT THE HELL IS A DOT?"

You are not immune to bullets. Or half the shit they can do to you.

What you ARE immune to is mind effecting things, if you spend conviction, but basically it means Badass Vampire can't CONTROL YOUR MIND. This is important.

    Close, but not quite.

Depending on who you are, you can access strange powers known as Edges, to help combat the monsters.

Keep in mind that they're not as powerful as every other supernatural, who can do things like throw people into shadows forever, jump through computers and punch you through the internet, turn into horrible Angel like beings, Possess other human beings to kill you, eat you with a single bite (and the car you were trying to hide in), or, in the case of Mages, completely destroy your reality and replace it with their own.

Oh, and also the world's going to end in a few years.

And yeah, you'll notice that the World of Darkness, ESPECIALLY the Old World of Darkness, is a lot like a crazy horror comic book. That's part of the fun.
    >> Anonymous 05/06/10(Thu)01:35 No.9642617
prep time wins all combats in wod. With skills in science specializing in chemistry and enough time you can kill anything. Vampires are delt with via fire bombs, werewolves with bigger bombs, and mages with deadly poison gas and than explosives. All of them have ways of coming back from alot of damage, so you have to kill them in one round with one blow. Though a powerful mage will probably survive the initial blast so prepare a 2nd and 3rd means of killing him that can activate soon after the initial blast. Given enough time he'll create a portal to a dimension he made and kill you with spells while you sleep(probably painfully).

Maybe it's just an inability to fit the gravity of all the others in my mind, but the punch-through-the-Internet one strikes me as the most disturbing.

Also, reading through some more of the character creation process, it looks like there's two different types of characters here. Bystanders and Hunters. I'm guessing I'm going for Hunter?

    >Bystanders and Hunters. I'm guessing I'm going for Hunter?
Probably. Bystanders are prospective Hunters that fail the initiation. All they get is the knowledge that evil monsters exist, but no special powers like immunity to mind control that full Hunters get.
    >> Anonymous 05/06/10(Thu)01:47 No.9642853
    >>9642715

    Yes.

A Hunter answered the call of the Messengers, and got some neato powers, but now they have to deal with the crazy shit.

A Bystander is someone who saw the reality of the world they were living in, and, for one reason or another, refused to act in time. Everything mostly returns to normal, except they can see the monsters. Not that they can do anything, they're still just humans.

Unless your ST (which is basically a term for your friend running the game) decides to have you play a Bystander, you'll be a Hunter.

    >If Vengeance is what it sounds like, visiting fiery retribution on the unwary could be equally hilarious and terrifying for all parties involved.
Pretty much. The first powers of Vengeance make either a melee or thrown weapon hit extra hard.

Your Creed makes a big impact on your hunter too. Creed is basically the philosophy your character assumes towards the hunt and monsters in general. Avengers (using Vengeance powers primarily) are the attackers; monsters appear, they get put down. Judges (Judgment powers) decide which monsters get put down when and the best plan of attack for doing so. Defenders (using Defense powers) protect others from the monsters. That's the 3 Zeal creeds; there's also 3 Mercy creeds and 3 Vision creeds, though 2 of the Vision ones are drive all of their members insane during their imbuing. Acting within your Creed goals gets you extra Conviction, which is the juice that runs your mental resistance and powers your Edges.

One minor note: you only get a Specialty when an Attribute or Ability is 4 or more dots. So you wouldn't get a Dexterity specialty, but would get a Stamina one.

But yeah, looking at Guy's sheet, he seems to be more suited for the Judgment type. He's seems to have a bit of an investigative mind, he's relatively decent with his hands, and likes to fight with his fists.

However, since he's a bit of a brawler, Vengance is still a pretty viable option, though most Avengers tend to use firearms.

    >Defender sounds like a handy thing to have.
Defenders are incredibly useful. Their first level power, Ward, creates a very very strong circle around you that monsters can't cross, and their second power, Rejuvenate, lets them heal incredibly quickly. They can share this healing with others too, which is good, because healing powers are really rare overall (the only other 2 come pretty late power-wise).

    >The core book thing says that things like Expression and Crafts get a specialization, regardless of dots. Do I keep those?
As >>9644227 says, Crafts and Expression are odd. They're so broad, you get a Specialty just to say what part of them you are actually trained in.

    >Finally, I'm not sure what to make of the Merits and Flaws.
They don't actually appear in the Hunter core book, just the Player's Guide. They add or subtract bonus points during character creation. They cover stuff not found in the other traits, like if your character is ambidextrous, can drink like a fish and never get drunk, or has an innate knowledge of maps. Flaws are just the opposite: you can't dance and trip over everything, always lose your keys or forget where you parked.

They're not necessary if you're just starting to learn the game though.

I've always been a fan of the "let the characters initial reactions to monsters determine their creed, with player approval" method. I've had a lot of success with it.

In this case though, it'll depend on what the player finds most interesting. What to get between the monsters and your bros? Defender. Want to be the one directing traffic and be a tactical leader? Judge. Want to hit the monsters with a glowing-red death pipe? Avenger.

    >>9644714

Ah, a roleplaying troll. Actually, I got Hunter: The Reckoning Core and Player's Guide from /rs/. I think they might have actually been put there by you at some point. If so, thanks.

    What else might I need?

    >>9644776

Actually, I'm explaining that with the Mentor thing and the scattered ability points: the martial artist tried to teach him to be quick, but only really succeeded at toughening him up, and doing plenty of grunt work for other people couldn't have hurt his stamina much.

you're not supposed to start out perfect at everything, but with debilitating flaws to make up for it. Shit's lame. The new flaws and merits play much more fairly.

You shouldn't need much besides those.

If you want to get technical, you could grab the Hunter Book: Defender splat. It introduces some new Edges and abilities you might like. It also gives a background on what Defenders are like and how they deal with the Hunter society in general.

    >you're not supposed to start out perfect at everything,
That's why the ST should smack down any character that's been deliberately min-maxed into an unrealistic mess, especially in Hunter.

I always hard capped the amount of points a character could get from Flaws at 7, and my players were good enough to not bring bad characters.

Some points at the beginning in exchange for a permanent flaw?

I still like nWoD's version better.

    >>9644944
yeah, I'm not sure he's a troll either. He's just a tremendous faggot, and he seems unable to differentiate between himself and his character.

He's annoying enough to be a nuisance, but productive and contributing enough to almost justify have him around.

I just wish things didn't turn into a shitstorm when he shows up.

    >>9644907

I actually liked how nWoD approaches it. No actual points for getting flaws, but you do get an extra point or so of XP if you manage to use your flaw in a manner that works and helps out with roleplay. This is not to say that this too cannot be abused, however. I usually only give 1 XP when the flaw is used, and have an absolute maximum of 2-3 times per story arc.

I also let my players buy off Flaws for 3 XP per point, if it made sense in game. You could clear Debts, for example, but I doubt your character can lose his Dependence (Insulin) flaw without finding a cure for diabetes.

    >I still like nWoD's version better.
Different strokes for different folks. I don't like how all nWoD's Flaws are basically the same value-wise.

    >I don't like how all nWoD's Flaws are basically the same value-wise.

That's true as well. I'd be more willing to up the XP rate for more serious flaws, but my players always take minor stuff for some odd reason. At worst, they'll have Behavior Blind.

    >but I doubt your character can lose his Dependence (Insulin) flaw without finding a cure for diabetes.

Greater or minor are hugely dependent on how they're played. Even things like "blind" can be relatively minor if played that way.

    >>9645086
Indeed. I was talking mostly about Hunters, so mostly vanilla mortals, but if your hunter can convince a mage with Life magic to cure his diabetes, great.

You still have to pay the XP though.

I always despised oWoD, mostly for the types that played Vampire: The Masquerade. Hunter was the only one that appealed to me, or even made any sense as an RPG instead of just a fantasy, so good luck OP!

Hunter is honestly one of my favorite games in the oWoD. Along with Wraith, they're fun to read and play (though Wraith is criminally under-played).

I was sort of disappointed by Vigil, until I read further. Horror Recognition Guide convinced me that this was going to be another one of my favorites.
