"Little mice scurry to stave off doom
While all around them shadows loom."
    -Lebron James

The noonday sun beats down on the Atlanta streets. Several stories above the gridwork, the brown-haired girl leans against the edge of an apartment roof, staring up at the bright light. A 50-caliber anti-materials rifle leans against the railing next to her.

Several hundred feet away, down the street, you are explaining to Private First Class Devon Brody what you're doing here; you're going to lure Subject 88 into the open, and then Clara will punch a hole in him with the rifle. He seems tentatively sure of himself. You sigh; it will have to do.

Somewhere off in the residential sprawl you hear the crash of metal on stone.

    >What do?

Motioning for Brody to follow, you set off down an alleyway connecting to the street.
"Helen, I've lost visual on you, if you find him make sure you lure him back over here," Clara's voice sounds in your ear.
"Right, stay sharp. I'm just going to see what's going on over here."
Peering out onto the next street, you can see a large figure, probably around 7'6", rifling through the wreckage of a car that looks like it's been opened like a can.
His wide frame is completely covered in bony plates layered on top of each other like scales. His back is to you, but you can imagine he's not exactly a looker.

88 gives you a wave of a bony hand, then bounds past you up the street. He really picks up some good speed for a man with a huge inner skeleton and huger exoskeleton.

"Clara, come on down; we need to get ourselves another cellular phone."
Soon the three of you are wandering the deserted streets, an odd group to be sure. Clara has slung the enormous .50-caliber over her shoulders, while Brody has his Springfield shouldered somewhat laxly.

"That went better than I expected," Garfield said. "Although, I DID expect I was going to get to eat him."

What does gamma radiation do to mechanicals? We need to clear out, Brody will likely be fine, but Clara...? She described herself as an "automata", which to me implies a lack of microprocessors and a more robust (if unrealistic by normal laws) steampunk-ish design, but that may or may not be so.

The problem with this is that Brody will forget what the hell he's doing in there in short order, and we can't communicate with him effectively while he's in there. Even a headset or similar would likely age into nonfunctionality very quickly.

The wind whips back your faces as you drive down the deserted I-75 highway. In the back seat, Clara stands up, ponytail whipping behind her, hanging on to the roll cage. Behind her, your various un-irradiated firearms are strapped in. The 9mm handgun gave off no radiation when examined, thankfully, though you ditched your clothing. Clumps of your hair have come out, giving you an even more punked-out look. Brody sits in the passenger seat, holding his wide-brimmed helmet down and looking silenty at the passing palmetto forests. You realize his life must be pretty shitty.

A little past Gainesville you pick up the first signals on the radio.
    "....anyone.....Tampa area.........message. I have valuable infor............ject 13, in Mi............ansisco. Please co...................adio tower on the outski..........Tampa."

Tampa is another 2 hours driving south, though you're doing heavily above the speed limit. Florida as a whole seems completely deserted, its inhabitants cleared out back when the psychic hurricane of 13 was over Miami.

The radio signal gets no stronger as you approach Tampa, which is troubling, but Clara assures you the radio tower was damaged at some point in the chaos. You follow her directions when she begins to recognize the area, and eventually find yourself outside of a small radio broadcasting station/studio. It's about four stories tall.
"I hope 33 has done well for himself in my absence," Clara muses aloud.

You make sure the Beretta has a round chambered, then exit the Jeep.
"Does everything look the way you left it?" you ask Clara. "Brody, we're here to fetch a man. Clara's a robot, I have bloodwhips. Read your card and stay sharp." Brody does so.

The radio station seems in decent condition, though the top of the tower is missing, twisted beams of steel ending abruptly. You enter through the front door, which has been barricaded; Clara moves the debris aside bodily.
Climbing several flights of stairs within the building, Clara occasionally calls out. "Mister 33? I've returned with help!" Her voice sounds so human; it echoes softly in the narrow stairwells.

At last you reach the fourth floor; smaller than the other three, it seems to contain a glass-windowed recording studio and a small cubicle farm. Moving through the offices excitedly, Clara takes the lead, but stops abruptly, her face registering only confusion.

    <Continuing......>

A man sits near the far wall, in the hallway between offices, slumped in an office chair. He's facing you, albeit somewhat awkwardly. You can get a good enough look to tell that his wrists have been totally gashed open. The carpet around him is a dull rusty stain.
As you draw closer, you make out his face. He looks tired, frozen in a fitful sleep, though the dried blood suggests a more permanent state. Behind him is a bulletin board, containing several schedules as well as a map of the united states.
Strange twisting symbols seem to be burned into the wall behind him, all across the board, like they were seared with some sort of tool. Dominating the expanse is a floor-to-ceiling black scar of ash, taking the rough shape of a humanoid figure with spindly, multi-jointed limbs stretching like gaunt tree-branches over the expanse of strange figures.

Clara's face is wrinkled at the brow. She chews her lower lip, adjusting her skirt as she looks at 33. You wonder why anyone would program a robot like that.
33 himself doesn't look like he's been dead long, maybe half a week, tops.

    "Shit...." Garfield murmurs.
"The rest of this room is clear," Brody says, looking around.

"Clara...you should go. You don't need to see this."
Clara drops the old man's hand she had been holding. Her fingertips come away with some of the dried blood on them. She rubs it off, somewhat absently, eyes on the ground. Then she turns and bolts out, one hand shielding her face.

"Time to teach me, blood..." you murmur to yourself, walking towards the wall. Before you can even start to extrude a tentacle, however, the symbols began vibrating and dancing in place along the board, jittering like bad animation. Even more horrifyingly, the humanoid figure begins to peel itself off the wall, jerkily stepping into being like some kind of waking nightmare. Its faceless visage regards you, shaking as though in the grips of some seizure. There is a crackling snap, and then another, as its long arms rip themselves from the medium of burnt wood, dragging on the floor given their harsh, angular length.

Other than physically touching it, the blood doesnt seem to have any further effect. You book it, making a narrow jump over the creature's own whiplike limp that snaps out at you.
Bursting through the door, you find Clara coming up the stairs.
    "I heard a gunshot! What's wrong?"
You frantically wave you hand, indicating to turn back.

Brody is behind you, taking the stairs slightly more slowly. He turns at the bottom of one flight, shouldering his rifle.
"Go on!" he shouts, before being impaled through the chest by a pair of arms. The slender man's form is black, but less a black that implies pigmentation than one that speaks of a true, horrible -absence-. In a flash, the torso of the being is right in front of Brody, and he is knocked backwards, out the window that stands between the two flights of stairs.

You dash back to the Jeep. As you burst out the front doors of the facility, you see Brody, his arm reattaching itself to the proper socket.
"Hey! You! Um...what's going on?" He asks, bone sinking back into its proper place.
"Just come with us if you want to...live..." you say, motioning for him to follow. You quickly shuffle through the equipment in the back of the jeep, finally finding the "Absorbent Tuning Fork", still in its clear cubic prison.
"Clara, could you break this open?"
"Yes? Let me try." She takes it from you, squeezing. Her face scrunches up with exertion, and several chunks of the clear plastic-like molding come off. She continues, until she finally draws it from what remains.
Behind you, the doors of the radio station slam open, thick veins of hissing, scratching blackness crawling across the outer walls of the structure as the slender man stands in the doorway, pointing at you with an enlongated limb.
You take the tuning fork, slapping it against the side of the jeep and pointing it at the beings unstable, jerky frame.
It produces a soft, even tone. Nothing happens. Your hand feels very dry.

If the underside of the wing heats up as hot as it can, then that'd create lift - so i vote that we practice selective activation of the burnination, towards the ultimate purpose of being able to wipe the smugness clean off of Ramiel's winged, egotistical face.

"Within this sliver of infinity are voices that will speak to you, seek you to dance for them like a puppet. I, for the most part, have been a willing servitor, for the power of the Shard is great."
"At its urging we stole from the Arkham dogs a shifting stone of unknown origin, and carried it into the wilderness, to the caps of black stone that kiss the heavens and spurn the sea. There We waited, and nursed the grievous injuries visited upon my ward by your parasite."
"The creature came, the insufferable mind that the Prime Shard wished absorbed unto itself. I stood my ground, as directed, but we...IT...was baffled, blindsided by the machinations of the dweller in the dark."
"We were driven from the mountaintop, and the stone lost to us, and every step dogged by the lashing nightbare lurking under every stone and threshold."

Both. He is slender, and made out of shadows.
We've seen the slender man in 13's crazy drawings, and Spider-Lebron/54Corpse told us about him when we experimented with artifacts.

"An unfortunate occurrence," Ramiel says, sheathing 23. He pats Creed on the shoulder. "But then, we thought you were Arkham hounds, so such is the way of things. I bid you well. I will return to you when I have divined further the Shard's intent." 151 braces his knees somewhat, then, with a powerful gust, lifts off, his wings flexing mightily. Creed stands before you, sleeves dragging emptily on his coat.
"Welcome aboard," you say. "That's Clara, the team Automaton, and this is private Devon Brody. You'll be introducing yourself a lot."
"...Cilian Creed," he spits out at last. "I will do as my Lord commands me, and you shall me his mouth in his absence."
