ALRIGHT, RECRUITS, THIS IS PART II OF THE ROKUGANI TACTICS THREAD. LAST TIME, WE WERE DISCUSSING THE UNICORN, AND WHETHER OR NOT THEY COULD HOLD GROUND.

TO EXPLAIN, DEFENSE IS REALLY NOT A HIGH POINT OF UNICORN STRATEGY. THEIR HORSES EAT A LOT OF FOOD AND ARE USELESS INSIDE A CASTLE, AND HOLDING TERRITORY BADLY HINDERS MOBILITY, WHICH IS ONE OF THEIR CHIEF AND DEFINING ASSETS.

Sounds like you should pretend to defend somewhere, let them capture it, then have the rest of your army pop up and siege them.

MASTER MATSU, I HAVE BEEN WONDERING, HOW DOES ONE PROPERLY CONDUCT A FULL-OUT FRONTAL CHARGE? IF IT'S ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, FOR EXAMPLE IF THE ENEMY IS BETWEEN YOU AND SOME DELICIOUS HUGE BREASTS.
I ALWAYS SEEM TO LOSE FAR TOO MANY MEN, AND I DON'T LIKE LOSING MEN BECAUSE I OFTEN CONDUCT LONG CAMPAIGNS AND ANY KIND OF ATTRITION REALLY RUINS MY DAY BY LIMITING MY TOTAL REACH.

OR AM I JUST ASKING TOO MUCH? REPLENISHING MY FORCES ALWAYS TAKES TOO MUCH TIME.

One idea on how to beat the Lion is probably hitting their resources.

After all, tacticians can only work with what they've got. They may be smarter than you, but if you can force them to fight on your terms by reducing their food supplies, popular support and troops, their strategists will be wringing their hands trying to figure out how to work a miracle with nothing but moths in their coin purse. And it's not like every Akodo is a genius on par with Toturi.

I'm certainly no strategic genius like a Lion, but we know a thing or two about beating enemies bigger and scarier than us, having been a minor clan before.

When outnumbered, you get him looking somewhere else with a distraction, such as a contingent of scouts or a naval skirmish, get the heck out of there, and find difficult terrain, so you fill 'em with arrows while they're trying to bring their full force to bear. Narrow passes with little room for larger, orderly groups of soldiers are a must have!

Y'know, our clans are kinda similar.
It's fortunate we don't occupy the same territory, otherwise we might come to blows. Not only are we pragmatic and often seen as "foreigners" in our own land, but we favor mobile warfare.

What we lack in numbers, we make up for in better defense compared to the Unicorn. Both of our militaries more effective on the offensive though, as the key advantage of cavalry is outflanking and attacking in unexpected locations, in the same way that an unexpected naval landing can accomplish the same sort of thing.

We don't really have the luxury of imperial favor or huge urban centers like the Lion. Defensive warfare is difficult for our clans. Of course, the Mantis deal with that fact by being hard to attack except by sea, and the Unicorn deal with that fact by not being there when the enemy decide to lay siege.

The main problem with heavy cavalry forces are- you guessed it- the horses. The fate of entire nations has risen and fallen based on the fates of their horses.

Consider the horse- a fragile animal. It breaks a leg, it is dead. Feed it wet hay, it is dead. Let it eat too much green grass in the spring, it colics, and might be dead- or it will flounder, and be lame and useful only as a pack animal forever more.

Heavy Cavalry is immensely powerful, but against a determined pike-wall, they break easily. However, pike formations are notoriously maneuverable- this is where your archers come in. Archers are easier to come by then are horse archers.

And remember this- once cavalry are engaged with other cavalry, their formation goes to hell. They must either continue to fight, fixing their location, or risk taking heavy casualties when they turn their backs to run, with the arrows and the lance-points of enemy cavalry close behind.

Use this wisely, and with a hundred mounted men you may fix in place three hundred enemy riders; and flank their position on foot. Thus did the legendary barbarian Alexander crush the horse clans of the far West, or so say the Unicorn scholars who still pass along such tales.

Mantis, a clan i have been married into, is often portrayed as greedy, lazy and entirely unfitting to be samurai. And so we infest every court in the land and every chamber-maids bed, and we hear all.

What? Shan-Yu was clearly Unicorn, he rode a horse and wanted to kill the Emperor and was a filthy Gaijin.

Free RPG day is June 19th. It obviously won't have everything, but it will be enough to whet the appetite.

Phoenix clan here, saving you all from bloodmagic by doing it so you don't have to.

Taint? What? No, I've got all this black jade here. That stops corruption, no problems at all. IF it's green, then you've got a problem.

    He's not a dragon, he's a Phoenix.

Yeah. That's the symbol for ronin in L5R. Toturi the Black adopted it for his standard during the Clan War. Mostly dropped it when he became Emperor.

Jade absorbs taint. When it's completely tainted, it becomes black.

Saru-chan stays awake while I sleep, and takes naps while I am awake, that way we always have at least one eye open. If danger nears, he can chitter a warning or hurl fruit to awaken me. We make a good team.
