"I hope Fieldson was right about that sit-down with Arkham," Garfield says, as the two of you watch the Chinook approach.
"Yeah, and I hope he was wrong about Arkham using me as a publicity stunt."

When the chopper sets down on the highway outside Tampa, about a half-dozen armed men exit, bearing military issue assault rifles. One of them beelines for you, while your ragtag team waits in the Jeep.

"You're the one we're here for? Express to Ohio?"

    >'Ello, Blood Quest. Fancy meet'n you 'ere.
I suppose Charleston will have to wait. And I hope 88's okay in Atlanta.
I'm not entirely too put out by being the new face of Arkham Research. We could take the company in a more tolerant direction (not saying we should or not, but I'm not completely "FUCK YOU! ARKHAM IS THE DEVIL").
Their actions to some of those they caught is deplorable. (Although I believe 13 was what STARTED the Key/Gate idea, due to some failed seance.) But consider this: perhaps we volunteered for the Key/Gate project. What other choice did they have afterward but lock up our crazy blood-monster ass?
Also throwing this out there: perhaps we should set Walters/Fieldson to searching for traitors amongst the ranks. Dr. O was genuinely surprised about the hexadon artifact at 13's old house. I think we have someone in league with the Slender Man.

You can feel the eyes of the soldiers as you get onto the helicopter, Clara and Brody hauling the equipment from the Jeep. Soon you are headed north, winding your way up towards Ohio.
"I'll tell you, it's good to finally hear some success stories coming past the blockade," one of the soldiers says aloud. "Do you know, I hear they're estimating the death toll at over 40 million people, mostly from the south-east and now California."

    Hey StonerDM

this idea I had since the encounter with #18:

How about a new rule that if we fight a numbered opponent and dice roll the exact number the opponent we facing, we get to make a special move. So when we fight #7 and roll 7, instead of crit fail we perform some kind of a special move or something.

The idea came to me when you did basically that when we fought #18

Brody is marveling at the schism between his and the modern military's equipment. Creed sits near the rear of the chopper, alone, while Clara sits near several of the soldiers, chatting amicably while they wonder at her circuitry and uncanny level of humanity.

You walk over to Creed's isolated corner. He raises an eyebrow as you approach.
    "Yes? What's wrong?"
"Nothing, nothing's wrong," you say, sitting next to him on the narrow bench. "I was just hoping to learn more about my team mates, and you are one of them, at least for the time being."
    "Yes...until Ramiel's return..."

"I'm not sure what you hope to learn. I felt the calling at a very young age, the presence of my...divine gift," he rubs a few fingers together, sending off a small, candle-wisp of flame. "My parents took me on the church circuit, instilling the Lord's passion in the faithful congregations. I was there that I was...apprehended by Arkham Research. They approached us as we were leaving a church, flashed some badges, and away I went; my parents probably didn't realize they were never going to see me again."

"It was pleasant enough at first, simple tests of authenticity and then effectiveness. It became apparent to me that I was being researched for military applications, and so I ceased cooperating. The experiments after that took on a far less...pleasant tone. Eventually they realized they couldn't replicate God's gift to me, and decided to lock me up with the rest of the subjects there, content to let me rot. Ramiel was one of the ones that helped me escape. I caught glimpses of him before, from time to time, behind a closed door or rounding a corner, and when I saw him during the chaos, I assumed he wasn't real. I understand now that it is my mission to serve and protect him, though protection is something he does not often require."

"That's a noble cause. It's better than becoming some pyromaniac. Have you tried looking for your parents?"
"They've moved, settled up in Colorado somewhere. I...what would I tell them? I've been imprisoned, tortured, vivisected, for all of my adult life? Maybe, when this is all over...but I've been keeping busy with Ramiel, first bringing justice to Arkham, and then his efforts to please the Shard."

The soldiers seem extremely impressed when Clara snaps her arm open to reveal her railgun. Over the course of the trip, however, they gradually become annoyed with Brody, who must be repeatedly told that he is in a flying machine, and that he is perfectly safe.
You and Creed empathize with one another's plights. Ohio swings into view with you confident that your relationship with him has grown.

The chopper touches down along a deserted stretch of road.
"We're in Ohio now; we skirted around over the border, and we're setting you down about 50 miles from Cleveland; this is a very disorganized bunch of people, which is why we haven't done more about it. All the same, be fucking careful out there."
You already have an M4A1; Clara and Creed are both given one, though you inform the military that giving one to Brody will probably end up being a waste.

You watch the chopper pull away, flying east to refuel and resupply.
"Miss Helen," Clara asks, loading the M4 like she was instructed and hefting it to her shoulder. "What's the plan?"

You set off on foot; the roads seem deserted, though you can see the light pollution from Cleveland ahead. Creed tears the sleeves off of his shirt and wraps up Clara's exposed wiring.
After about twenty-minutes of slow going, you hear engines and approaching headlights behind you. A caravan of about three large pickups is approaching, their rear beds fill of about 20 total locals, all armed with handguns or rifles. They've probably spotted you.

Ohio: outside of the cities, it's a lot of agriculture and general wooded areas. most of the people lack much of an accent, pronouncing most words basically how they're spelled. Some people have your basic trashy inner-city accent. People drive really slowly and really badly.

Cleveland proper is kind of a shithole, but it has extensive suburbs which tend to be pretty nice. The city lost like half it's population over the last 50 years when the jobs left, so the only people left are the people who either wanted to stay, or are too poor to leave. There are huge numbers of brick buildings and warehouses and shit everywhere that are just completely sealed and boarded up, and have been for decades because it's too expensive to demolish them.

I've been told the people are friendly, but it didn't seem any different from anywhere else. There are some pretty spectacular rednecks there, but it's got the full range of people you'd find anywhere.

Two of the shots hit Creed in the stomach, and he goes down gasping. At the very least, the flames go out and stop killing people. That's a very small comfort right now.

"I hope this works..." you say to yourself, extruding Garfield.
Keeping his temperature as low as you can, you extrude two tentacles, slowly working your way into Creed's body through his bullet-holes; you flood the area with blood. You actually manage to feel out the two slugs inside him, and you gently guide them out through the entrance wounds.
"Oh, God...Jesus, help me, that hurts," Creed grunts.

Looking over towards the 'red carpet' you can see the Siren standing on her feet now.

Her head is cocked back at a terrible angle, but she holds her arms at her sides, fists flexing. She has torn off or otherwise removed her black dress, exposing her bare flesh down to only underwear.

When the last chip of bone is minced to ashes and those ashes are combed over intently, you finally feel something nagging at you, like a mosquito in your ear that won't shut up. You gradually realize that you've been unable to hear, unable to really think, to reason with yourself. It's like a caffeine crash and a hangover at once, the rush of exhaustion and soreness coming at the tailend of your insane rush.
"Miss Helen? Miss HELEN!! Are you alright??" Clara is screaming in your ear.
"82, Jesus, get a hold of yourself!" Garfield says. He sounds deeply concerned.
All around you you can hear the masses of civilians weeping. You realize your own eyes are tearing as well.

You stand up, wiping off your face. This headache is ridiculous. There are pools and pools of carelessly splashed blood around you. The blood on your skin and even in your clothing has retreated into your body, though Creed is stained a deep wet crimson all over, coughing slightly. The blood coming out his wounds is red, not black; you remember something about that being a good sign.
