Several weeks ago I unleashed the Monostat(tm) system upon the world with ASPERGERS: The Misfittening. A week later, I returned with SCHIZO: The Maddening. For christmas I said I'd make a new game. it's a bit late, but dare you face:

    HIPSTER: The Pilgrimage

    HIPSTER: The Pilgrimage
    =======================

The Pilgrimage is based on my idiotic Monostat(tm) system. The monostat in this system is Ultimate Cool (UC).

You play a person who thinks they are special. Somebody who thinks they know better than everybody else. Perhaps this is true, but probably not. This could range from liking an unusual musician(10) to wearing-three-hats-at-once-and-thinking-you-look-good(1)
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)22:48 No.13403044
All skillchecks are of a roll-under type, and will be made using your base Ultimate Cool + skill and/or situational modifiers using 3d6. This applies to both to everyday tasks and combat, should you need to engage in it. Failing these checks will cause you to be uncool, or at least have a brainfart.
Situational modifiers are applied by the storyteller/referee.
    >> Anonymous 01/04/11(Tue)22:48 No.13403049
I was into Hipster: the Pilgrimage before it was popular.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)22:49 No.13403053
    CHARACTER GENERATION:
What type of Hipster are you? Emo wannabe? Arty beatnik? Dumb Indie Kid? Ultragoth?

Generating your Monostat: roll 1d10 and record your Ultimate Cool (UC) rating.

    A rough guide to how screwed you are;
1-2 Tragically Hip: You have disappeared so far up your own ass that even other hipsters have a difficult time dealing with it. You've come so far around that you now like Rihanna for the deep and ironic content of her back-catalogue.
3-5 Hipster God: Everybody needs to stop liking things you don't like and get a grip, man.
    6-8 Douchebag: You heard me.
9+ I wish I was cool: You like Evanescence or some shit like that, and not even in an ironic way. You ultimate sellout.
    >> Anonymous 01/04/11(Tue)22:50 No.13403060
    >>13403049

Whatever, Hipster: The Pilgrimage is too mainstream now anyways.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)22:50 No.13403068
You must now generate your linked stat modifier(LSM). LSM = 10 - UC

This value is applied to the following three linked stat modifiers(LSM) categories: Abstruse, Anti-establishment, and Addiction.

Abstruse: Obscure things that you would die in defense of. The bands you love that only two other people care about and the particular, expensive and ridiculous clothes you wear.

    Anti-establishment
: The things you hate about the man - not just the government but the normal sheeple in general. (Oh that's a good one, sheeple. That's soooo original.)
    >> Alpharius 01/04/11(Tue)22:51 No.13403087
    >>13403060

No, see, it sold out and became mainstream so its totally okay to like it ironically now. Since everyone likes it, no-one who's cool likes it, which means the cool thing is liking it again. Duh.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)22:52 No.13403092
Addiction: Drugs or sustenance - Something you cannot live without
    ..
Maybe you're a pothead, or a chain-smoker. Heroin is so passé, but maybe it's back in this year (You thought I'd miss out the accent on the "é", didn't you? You won't catch me like that, fagballs.)

Each of these categories get a number of specific skills equal to your LSM value. 50% of each set must be extremely specific, and 50% must be extremely general (these are rounded up, so for example if you got a 1, you take 1 general and 1 specific skill in each category.) None of them may relate directly to anything that could be considered mainstream in any way.

    Exceptions:
Ultra-hipster: If your UC is 1-2, then everything MUST be mainstream, but with a modifier of "Retro" or "Ironic." Be prepared to justify your choice every single time it comes into play.
Addiction: You may spend your entire LSM on either "straight-edge" or "Vegan" and have DOUBLE VALUE. That's right, LSM * 2. You are now some sort of evangelical teetotaller or vegan, and are always a complete asshole about it.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)22:52 No.13403103
    ULTIMATE COOL CHECKS AND CHALLENGES:
Whenever you wish to do something unusual you must make a Ultimate Cool check. This can include (but is not limited to) talking to a stranger, going somewhere strange or doing something that you have never done before.

When you must deal with a frustration you must pass a challenge. These include people interrupting your enjoyment of a skaterpunk rendition of "Girl from Ipanema" or having to say more than "whatever" to some jock in a polo shirt or an asshole in a suit, doing something prodictive, or particularly stopping talking to anyone about your Abstruse obsessions.

These both follow the same mechanic. Roll 3d6, and you must get under your Ultimate Cool + appropriate skill modifier(s) + situational modifiers. Lets call this value a DC(Difficulty Class) as in recent D&D versions. If the roll equals the DC, you have an awkward moment (how this plays out is up to the player and referee) but get to roll again. Your applicable skills can be positive or negative modifiers, depending on whether it's a check or challenge.

A success....is a success! But if you fail you have a brainfart.
    >> Anonymous 01/04/11(Tue)22:53 No.13403111
    aw, you made Hipster?

I was hoping you'd make "World of Darkness player: the precious little snowflakening" or whatever it was gonna be called.

    >> Anonymous 01/04/11(Tue)22:54 No.13403130
Man, this system is a total ripoff of what Black Dog Studios was doing back in the nineties, man.

It's okay if you've never heard of them, they're pretty obscure.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)22:55 No.13403142
Unlike in "ASPERGERS: the misfittening", failing a check or challenge does not normally have terrible consequences.
If you fail a check, you cannot attempt it again. If you fail a challenge, you simply said or did something uncool. If you fail the challenge by more than twice your UC, you are temporarily revealed to be the pretentious ballbag you really are.

You are stick-thin and physically weak, so should you be busy engaging in banter with some filthy populist idiot, they may well beat the living shit out of you at this point. Hey, you gotta make sacrifices for your art sometimes.

As always, how this roleplays is up to you and your referee.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)22:56 No.13403152
And that's the rules. But wait!
    EXAMPLE OF PLAY.
Stephen "Steff" Givewood(UC 6) has decided to spend time at the mall with his friends, where they will visit the local music store and loudly talk about bands no-one has heard of,
Steff decides to annoy and/or impress the staff by asking if they have the latest vinyl 12" of Swedish Death-Pop trio "Love-Hål i Snön." He asks his question of the faceless corporate mook behind the counter (secret ultrahipster UC 2 - just trying to making some damn money)

Steff rolls to impress: His UC 6 gets a +4 from ABSTRUSE:SWEDISH POP, and an additional +12 situational for having ABSTRUSE:BIZARRE BADLY PRINTED T-SHIRTS WITH OBSCURE MOVIE QUOTES (4), and the +8 LSM from the ultrahipster - they talk the same language.

    that's 6+4+12 = 22
    Roll3d6 1,1,2 = 4

ULTRASUCCESS! The store clerk is impressed!
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)22:56 No.13403167
unfortunately Timothy(GC 3) is in the shop, and Steff doesn't realise Timothy also has OBSESSION:SWEDEN. The same check plays out like this vs Timothy. Timothy's not a hipster, and his obsession with Sweden counts against the check. The referee applies the modified values to the same roll.
    6+4-7 = 3
    Roll3d6 1,1,2 = 4

Now, Timothy's quite severely autistic and he's not impressed - he's never heard of this Swedish "Love-Holes in the Snow" band. Fortunately this only triggers a sulk, so Timothy simply follows Steff around and repeatedly calls him a liar, all the while looking away. Pretty fortunate, really - he could have earned a mighty beat-down from an autistic kid.

    ADVENTURE IDEAS
Trying to impress the other morons in the party.
Trying to pick up 13 year old girls who are easily impressed.
Getting the old band back together!

want the whole thing in a lump? http://pastebin.com/sEvEJWHG

Being Tragically Hip means you automatically fail every test barring situational modifiers out the wazoo. Could you give a few examples of situational modifiers for HIPSTER: The Pilgrimage?

    >Being Tragically Hip means you automatically fail every test barring situational modifiers out the wazoo. Could you give a few examples of situational modifiers for HIPSTER: The Pilgrimage?

That's by design. If you're Tragically Hip, you have stopped making any rational sense.

Generic situational modifiers are awarded by the referee as per "how difficult would this be for a person to actually do in real life." So for example buying a can of soda at a 7-11 might get a +20.but stopping talking to your hipster friends and serving those whiny bitches so you don't get fired will get maybe a +5 (real hipsters have difficulty holding down non-hipster jobs)

    or did you mean skills?

BUT! wouldn't The Tragic hipster have to come up with some excuse to the dm before he could buy the soda at the 7-11, so as to reassure he was only doing it ironicly?

How does Irony work in this game? Would doing an action you would normally hate give a negative (say, -8), but doing it IRONICLY instead give half that as a positive (so +4)?

    >>13403319
Sorry, I meant skills. I suppose the Storyteller or GM or whatever arbitrarily assigns skills based on what the player has expressed interest in? Like, say, my hipster with a UC of 2 professes a devout love of Flandrian religious vestments from the fourteenth century. Since that focus is pretty narrow, I'd imagine he'd have a pretty big skill bonus to all checks involving that, right?

that's the beauty of the monostat system. 1 ruleset-fits-all

I considered implementing the bag-of-madness mechanic for this, but 1: I couldn't be bothered and 2: I figured hipsters should be predicable in their likes & dislikes.

you're meant to have at least 2 skills per category, one specific and one general. You can take more, I guess, but you still have to spread the same number of points between them

Ok, meet Geoff Jefferson, the Trad-Jazz lover.
    UC 4, so LSM 6
Apparently he thinks he's a Hipster God.

    Abstruse 6
    - Traditional Jazz music 3
    - Knowledge - Everything Count Basie ever did 3
    Anti-establishment 6
    -Taxes 3 (it's a scam, man.)
-Kinko's store clerks 3 (he hates them sooo much)
    Addiction 6
-VEGAN 12 (jeff is a vegan because he is better than you. He will always find a way to mention this)

It now occurs to me I gave Steff +4 bonuses instead of +2 bonuses in the Example of Play. Oops. Oh well, he passed easily either way.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 01/04/11(Tue)23:40 No.13403728
    >>13403649
a clarification: general LSM categories don't count as modifiers in your rolls - but are used when someone else is rolling, so generally NPCs don't need specific skills. if another player was trying to out-do Jeff on Count Basie facts, he'd get a positive modifier of Jeff's Abstruse category (jeff loves obscure shit) and a negative penalty from jeff's Count Basie skill (Jeff knows his shit)
