it should take about two to reach level two, four more for three

A level three cat would then tear through commoners at a horrifying rate so if he had enough he could reach great levels very fast

    What? No.
If the cat's ECL 1, it needs 1000 xp to level.
A CR 1/2 encounter (i.e. something with 1 level in an NPC class) is worth 150 xp.
7 commoners bite the dust before the cat gets level-up music.

Depends. Basic D&D had kobolds in the orcs of Thar supplement, they only needed 500xp to level up.

Basic/1st/2nd AD&D it would probably need 250xp, so not that many commoners.

It is probably getting xp for successful use of hide in shadows, move silently and climb for each one. The specialist book for 2ed gave folks 25-100xp for successful skill use, let's say the Cats thief abilities are 25xp per successful use.

So a move silently and hide in shadows preceded by a climb to sneak into the commoners room unnoticed before a ambush would be at least 75xp. Assuming the GM gave you 50xp for a successful assassination against a o level target (cats are a assassin subclass unless it is Oriental Adventures where they are Ninja) then 2 commoners should do it.

Congrats, distribute 15% among your 3 thief abilities, roll d2 + con (max bonus 1) for your HP, subtract 1 from your AC and add 1 to your climbing movement speed as well as jump distance.

Secondly, you should reread the OP, an possibly brush up on subject-object.

    >The story, passed on by a pregnant woman is about cats that get jealous of newborn infants. As it was described to me, the cats, no longer afforded the attention they once got prior to the infant's birth, will actually attempt to suffocate the infant. Specifically, she described a cat, "sucking the wind out of the baby," by placing its nose in the infants mouth while the infant is asleep. This immediately seemed unreasonably far-fetched, yet she maintains it's true since she has it "on the authority" of a number of other women.

    >Cats have long been viewed as evil, and for centuries a number of superstitions featuring their bringing bad luck have abounded. Similar to the "sucking life from a child by swallowing its breath" superstition was one about not raising a kitten and a baby together, lest the cat thrive and the child waste away. In that superstition, the cat was supposed to be stealing the child's vitality by magic.

    >As to how widely believed the "breath sucking" tale is, a 1929 article in the Nebraska State Journal quoted a doctor as having said he had seen "the family pet in the very act of sucking a child's breath, lying on the baby's breast, a paw on either side of the babe's mouth, the cat's lips pressing those of the child and the infant's face pale as that of a corpse, its lips with the blueness of death."

Since you have no hands, your weapon choices are limited. I suggest spiked armor, which is a light martial weapon. It can be used in addition to your bite and 2 claw attacks, but it drops the hit bonus on your claw arracks down to the level of your bite. I sugest picking up the multiattack feat as soon as you can get it.

Your major problem is gonna be your lack of range. You have 0 range: you must step into the square of an oponent to attack them. Defenses against attacks of oportunity are a must.

"You can move 5 feet in any round when you don’t perform any other kind of movement. Taking this 5-foot step never provokes an attack of opportunity. You can’t take more than one 5-foot step in a round, and you can’t take a 5-foot step in the same round when you move any distance. "

Though in that RPGs setting cats are good it wouldn't exactly be hard to play a more twisted version.

    depends on the system

in ars magica the cat is one of the strongest units
it is only surpassed by the naked man with a sharpened stick

so since its fairly easy for a cat to kill a commoner I say 100exp each
making it 10 for reaching 2nd level

    Kitty: the Mewping

As a cat, it is your sacred duty to caterwaul, roll around and look cute. Of course, you have to defend your territory against vicious strangers while protecting your owner from stupid little dragons that claim to have created Atlantis. Possible enemies are pit bulls (raging wall-smashers), tortoises (eldritch magic-users) and crows (obnoxious neighbors).

You have to be careful, as your Cuteness can be depleted by aggressors and using your special kitty-cat gifts. Doing cute kitty-cat things will restore your Cuteness. Some particularly gifted cats can kill the average man through Cuteness alone!

You are correct, partially. A 5-foot step usually doesn't provoke Attack of Opportunity, but stepping into other creature's space does provoke it. That's why Bullrush, Grapple, and those things provoke it too, you step in their personal space and they don't like it.

The cat stats are already there, we just extrapolate their consequences.
Specifically, their consequences upon the underclasses.

Housecat attacks are becoming a growing concern among commoner families...

I know I missed the party, but a cat's ECL is not 1. It is 1/2, since they only have half a hit die. So how does that change the situation?
    >> Anonymous 01/06/11(Thu)14:55 No.13420199
A DM has to have a groups' first adventure be stopping a mysterious monster that's terrorizing a city. Turns out the monster is a level 5 house cat.

I don't think it would make a huge difference. All it means I guess is that if you choose to start the Cat at Lvl 0.5 you would get an advance to Lvl 1 after something like 500xp maybe?

I think it is maybe fair to start player character Cats at level 1 though as no doubt they are some of the most dangerous of their kind.

By core rules, cats don't level. They are ineligable to take class levels because they're too low int.

So, no number of commoners is enough.

Pfft...in my opinion one of the biggest problems with D&D, and other rules heavy systems too is that they reduce the creativity and imagination.

That's why I would rather play a Cat in Don't Rest Your Head. Or at the very least if it did HAVE to be DnD I would mod the hell out of it.

Cat mages and rangers and stuff can have humans as familiers/companions right?
    >> Anonymous 01/06/11(Thu)20:32 No.13423772
    >>13421463

For 3.5, the formula to level is (Next level x Current level) x 500.

    1x0.5x500=250 xp.

So not that many commoners at all until they can take their first level.

    Haha, cool.

Hmm... what advances should a cat be allowed?

A regular cat not like a barbarian wizard cat.

Maybe bonuses to stealth and stuff? An extra natural spell for invilisiblity or stealth...

Can a cat with a certain intelligence take levels in normal classes?
    >> Anonymous 01/06/11(Thu)20:50 No.13424002
    >>13423920

Yes. However, as far as I know the only way to increase a cat's intelligence is to cast Awaken. Or Wish, of course.

    But we don't NEED to.

There are already Cat RPGs, like the one >>13416600 mentioned.

And flexible RPGs like Don't Rest Your Head you don't even need to change anything, just change how you and the GM decide difficulties and stuff.

    >>13424002
Of course a Cat could have such a spell cast on it by a god/demigod. And if that Cat then learned how to cast such spells itself it could bring more up to the same.

Of course that is assuming that Cats are actually like their human centric bestiary entry says.

Cats could well be far more intelligent than they let on to us.
