Hey /tg/. I know there's a lot of creative types here, so I thought I'd ask:

How many of you use that creative aspect to make a living? Maybe as writers, artists or whatever.

Me, I'm a writer. I do indie comics and short stories.

Pic related. Most recent project is about a fallen angel.

There's no reason you can't have both. I'd say enjoyment is tantamount to skill - when the quest to improve becomes overbearing, it really sucks the fun out of a hobby. I learned that the hard way - I'm a failed drawfag. The trick is not to give a shit about the ultimate outcome. Instead, your goal is:

    1. Am I enjoying myself?
    2. Am I doing the best I can to improve my skills?

1's over 2 because it's more important, but both are vital. As long as you end each session answering "yes" to both questions, you're golden.

I remember read an article by Leo Benedictus and Johnathan Franzen - both serious authors published by Random House - about how writers have to almost convince people that they DIDNT take writing courses so that they could be taken seriously. It's a shame, because writing's a craft and needs to be taught like one, but everyone has this image of the writer (like most artists) being someone who just sort of has books inside them and periodically spits them out.

I don't know, I always worry that on the back of Eisenhorn and Ravenor's success that there'd be a glut of inquisitor protagonists. >>13424340

Especially if you have a special format in mind, such as screenplays or scripts because those tend to have precisely prescribed layouts. I do like the Astartes, yeah. On both sides of the divide. That said, I don't like how they're written most of the time. I feel a little like it's a concept with a lot of hidden depths to it. That said, yeah, my Grey Knights novel will be pretty Inquisitor-heavy. I tend to put down any novel that's purely Marine-tastic. What interests me is how the humans and Astartes play off each other, and how they (often fail) to interact.

That's it exactly. There's a bit in Helsreach where Grimaldus knows someone is making a joke, but he doesn't know how to react to it, so he says nothing - just stares - and just waits for the next appropriate time to speak. I have a friend with a brother who does that (he's pretty far down the Autism Spectrum, shall we say) and that struck me as an interesting reaction, when unsure how to deal with other people.

Astartes (especially Templars, and double-especially Chaplains) are so far from the people they were that it just struck me as a really powerful image - like how Grimaldus has no idea how to comfort the little girl that asks him if he's a hero, so he just stares down at the poor kid.

Not ADB, but if I had to hazard a guess I'd throw out two possible reasons.

    1) Unfamiliar format. Abnett does a lot of prose, not script work. The closest he's come would have been comics, which he's awesome at, but doesn't necessarily translate well into film. See every comic book movie before the first Spiderman for evidence.

    2) Not being able to actually write what he wanted to write. It's incredibly frustrating for a writer to work on a film because everyone ELSE on the production has different opinions on the script should look like. Remember how Kevin Smith was saying this producer asshole wanted Superman to fight a polar bear, and then fight a giant spider and so on and so on? It's like that.

That said, just two obvious (but entirely speculative) possible options that have sprung to mind.

Where the movie was concerned, y'gotta bear in mind just what Dan was asked to do. Codex (or GW and Codex, whatever, fucked if I know - I'll ask next time) basically wanted a default, basic, introductory 'These Are Spess Mehreens' by the numbers deal. And that's what Dan delivered.

We talk a fair bit, and I remember when he mentioned that. Joking aside, Dan's plots are rarely A to B like that, even when he writes Astartes. But it was one of those moments when he had a specific mandate, if you get me. It had to be what it was, I guess.

Writing a screenplay is EXTREMELY precise and techincal. There are all sorts of rules and conventions you have to abide by if you want a screenplay taken seriously. Like, for instance, a page has to represent one minute of screen-time so that a producer or a director can pick up a script, flick through it, and know in seconds how long the film is going to be.

That's not even getting into extremely shitty stuff like how the margins have to be. And no, you can't be the rebel who changes up everything because these are formats everyone in the film industry conforms to and will expect from you.

It's extremely off-putting to me. I find scripts as a format interesting - the interplay between a writer and a third part like an artist or a director - but I prefer writing for comics because it's much more subjective and individual. It feels like a conversation between me and the artist, instead of something I hand off to a bunch of suits who I know will take into the back room and rape it with switchblades.

Ha, that's awesome. Trust me, despite getting a fairly decent reception on /tg/ when BL threads come up, I'm under no delusion that more than 2% know who I am, and only 1% give a fuck. I'm a dick, but I'm not deluded.

That said, /tg/ does get a mention in my next novel's acknowledgement blurb. My first year getting published has been fucking insane, and the forum feedback has been awesome. It's just a Chaos Marine novel, but the thought is in it.

I had to smuggle the name in, though. BL won't even link to my blog because of the content, so there's no way I could just say "Thanks to Bolter and Chainsword, and also 4chan."

So we're in the Thanks list as "the elegan/tg/entlemen".

Writing a series of books is like having a child. When you first start, your life is balanced with the indescribable joy of being a father, sleepless nights of worrying about a screaming infant, and wiping excrement from intimate places. You start with the best intentions of intentions and you begin to think about the future. What sports are you going to encourage, whether he is going to take after you or her more, where he will go to college, what kind of woman he'll marry, and so on. You plot things out. You have certain milestones you'd like him to reach. You create the narrative, the arc. There is no guarantee that he reaches those waypoints but they make for good guiding lights.

There are a few stops that I'd like Locke and Jean to make. Not much different from GM'ing a campaign, really.

This tends to be a problem rather than an asset, though. I know LOTR is like the Bible to nerds, but let's be honest - the Hobbit was better because it was an actual STORY. LOTR was a sightseeing tour of Middle Earth with a vague narrative stapled on the side, which is why it took three fucking books. It lacks a lot of narrative focus that The Hobbit had.

Do not get me started on the Silmarillion.

It's probably because fantasy authors are the most likely to put a lot of time and effort into worldbuilding and hence more likely to try and show as much of that world as possible. Which is understandable, but should always be tempered by the necessities of the narrative. No matter how cool he is, if Tom Bombadil doesn't help the Fellowship in a vital and material way, he's just making the book longer and that's not a good thing.

I remember not too long ago, a comic writer wandered onto /co/ and saw one of his books being storytimed. He was upset at first, then struck up a conversation, wound up being a good thread. Couple days later, he blogs that his sales have gone WAY FUCKING UP since being on 4chan.

Again, hence Pratchett being superior. His early stuff suffered a little from it, but those were more obvious parodies of fantasy than actually serious books themselves. Later ones become more developed and flesh out the setting while still being functional, and high-quality, narratives.

Of course, it takes thirty books and twenty years but the end result is one of the most vivid, believable and popular fantasy worlds ever. So make of that what you will.

I think if you took a sampling of fantasy authors, over 80% would say that they are former GMs who either wanted more complex stories or more pliable PCs. While I don't do that near as much as I used to, tabletop will always hold a dear place in my heart. Basically the genesis of everything I do.

That reminds me. You mentioned once that you'd like to write Black Legion novels after the Night Lords stuff is done. Do you know if Black Library will let you do that? At first I thought they might one of their more experienced writers to tackle a character as important as Abaddon. But they seem to be liking you, giving you Horus Heresy assignments and such. Scheduling clash. I basically had to pick between doing Grey Knights or Abaddon/Black Legion first. Figured it would be better to do 1 Imperial series and 1 Chaos series at a time, rather than Chaos, Chaos, Chaos.

Plus, I write sloooowwwwwww. That's where the problems come in. The average novel deadline is 4 months. The First Heretic took me 10. Helsreach took 9.

I'm also wary because although Abaddon is in dire need of some actual credence to show his thematic role as the antichrist of 40K (rather than an armless fucknut fuelled by failure), I'm also trying to play Black Legion in tabletop, and I loathe that retarded "He made them the best ion his novel because he plays them" crap that sometimes gets spouted by tossers online.

Actually, what I'm hoping for is blunt honesty, especially if it applies to my own work. The only way I'm going to get better is if people tell me what I'm doing wrong. If I can get a general sense of if my writing style needs further polishing before attempting something serious, then I know I need to work harder to clean it up.

There's nothing WRONG with saying "Yeah, they're not so good on a professional scale." Does that make them any less enjoyable? Fuck no! But there are a LOT of writefags besides myself here, some far better than me. If even one of them gets a good word, it will make their day. Or if they can learn how to improve, always a good thing because it makes the stories posted EVEN BETTER.

That said, if it makes them uncomfortable, then they can always not respond, or say that they don't wish to answer. I'll consider that fair.

Okay, last post before I'm done for the night. For serious this time.

Personally I like some of the writing here, especially the collaborative settings. The one where the Emperor creates an impossibly enormous spaceship that holds the entire galaxy and travels between the cosmos was interesting, as was the one about a society perpetually in freefall in some kind of massive bottomless pit. Those come to mind but honestly there's some good stuff here.

Is everything posted here good? No. Is everything posted here bad? No. There's a bell-curve, just like with most everything else. And part of the reason I come here to to partake in what you guys come up with.

    It's a bit of a long shot, but I've a question.

Are there any plans floating around the Black Library for some more Xenos-centric fiction? Specifically Eldar-related? Gav's Path of the Warrior was fantastic, and Mistress Baela's Gift was a delicious little tale of Commoragh. So there seems to be at least some motivation to write it, and write it well. But is there any more other than the sequals to Path of the Warrior in the planning?

Alien stuff is tricky. Space Marines sell, and they actually sell very well as sci-fi novels go. BL has, in the past, been very cautious about xenos jazz. That's thawing a lot now, though. But even a few years ago, I said "I want to write an eldar novel" and the answer was "No, Gav is doing one."

And yeah, Path of the Warrior is a trilogy, I think.

    >>13425278
Throne of Lies. Hm. I describe it like this:

"I'm... proud of it. But you can tell I'd never done audio before. It reviews well, and I like the end result, but at several points I just do this painful full-body tense at certain lines that really weren't written to be spoken aloud. In prose, they read fine. Out loud, it's a bit purple."

    It was fun, though.

And in all honesty, ta for picking it up, especially on my birthday. That's sort of awesome.

    >>13425334
I'd love to, but take that a step further and look at the end result. /tg/ would fill up with people annoyed that I'd used the idea / used it in a bad way / wasn't the author they'd wanted to use it, etc. Joking aside, fucking with /tg/ canon is like pissing on sacred ground. There's a Vindicare assassin in my Grey Knights novel, and for ages I was thinking "LIIVI... Just call him LIIVI..."

    But that'd be blasphemy.

That said, I do have an idea for how to show the Angry Marines. Subtle, like. Plausible deniability is key.

Oh man, I remember reading one fantasy book I found really offensive to gays, but done in a kind of throwaway manner. Trudi Canavan's Magician's Apprentice series, IIRC. One of the characters, a shit hot healer wizard, is in the habit of constantly healing himself to keep himself perky and fresh (like magic coffee). When he stops, to conserve power, he begins to feel lust to his exotic male travelling companion.

He was literally healing himself straight. Make of THAT what you will, but I call it bullshit. I mean, sure he ends up pretty happy in a relationship with said dusky-skinned buddy, but that doesn't change the fact that he was healing away the gay.

I court heresy. I moved to the middle of Bumblefuck, Nowhere, in rural N. Ireland. I'm getting married in the summer, and one of the groomsmen is Indian, while another is gay. Coming from London, that means absolutely nothing. Over here, there's a real chance Katie's granny will turn to stone and catch fire. She can barely believe we're not having the damn thing in a church.

    People are weird.

    >>13425498
The problem with that is that in primarily Space Marine fiction, the characters are absolutely sexless anyway, in every way you slice the word. So that limits the number of characters you have on hand, for a start. Then there's the fact most won't survive the book, or be in love/have sex over the course of it, because In The Grimdark Of The Blah Blah, There Is Only Blah. So choices are limited.

But yeah, that's the kind of thing that I think a lot of Fantasy and Sci-Fi lacks, which tends to jar me a little. It's always something I tell myself to bear in mind, then never find a natural place for it - and inserting it just to be cosmopolitan is the biggest kind of dickery.

But you're right, I'll bear it in mind. For a while, I was fairly sure two of Grimaldus's inner circle were gay in Helsreach, but they were too sexless and removed from humanity for that to mean anything of any real worth.

This is something I have wrestled with as a DM. I really want the NPC's to feel like real people who have walked in on the party's adventure. Do you have advice on how to do that sort of character development?

I hope I'm not derailing with a srs question.

Writing and currently perusing an English degree. But with no desire to teach I have no idea what I'm going to do to make money but it's the only real skill I have. If I were more gifted when it comes to math I'd be doing Engineering or something but I guess I'm destined to be starving.

I'm a English graduate too and let me tell you something - Marketing and Advertising companies love us. Get yourself a position as a copywriter.

You'll also be shit hot for administrative jobs - you can probably read and type twice as fast as the average person, and just having a degree of ANY type will earn you a couple thousand extra on average for a starting career.

Become a pencil pusher by day, freelance writer by night. Alternatively, become a military officer and apply your unappreciated degree in a field unrelated to your education. Get decent pay and a little social capital, as well as managerial skills that might get you a good job down the line with time to write. If unemployment is 5% for degree holders, imagine what it is for degree holders with that kind of experience.

Warning: Could require lissome morals and will require a commitment to physical fitness.

One of the unmappable, teeny-ass hamlets outside of Enniskillen. Beautiful countryside, writer's retreat, absolutely lethal in winter. All that good stuff.

Sounds like you kinda already are. It's just one of those things, I think. When you write something longer than a few hundred words, the characters always do weird shit that you didn't expect, while the flip side is that you feel something about them that may not be coming across in what you're writing. (Sexuality in sci-fi war literature is often, unfortunately, part of the latter.)

But to actually answer your question, I reckon (read: guess) it's a matter of familiarity. It's the kind of thing that just ends up gestating from writing a lot about a small group of people. Strands start to spin out from the main thread like that. It's a bitch to do in DMing, so I know what you mean. There's often not enough time to establish it outside of recurring villains, etc.

This thread is making me want to write again. I haven't written anything since I was a kid, suppose I'll have to dust off the ol' imagination.

    I know how you feel.

I wrote a little something for the Great Crusade's contest after hearing about it on ADB's blog, but I only found out about it the night before. So I only had a day to do all my research and bang it out. It's pretty damn shitty I'm afraid. But it felt good to write again; I haven't written anything in a while. DMing kind of scratches the itch, but it's not the same at all, not really.

Ye gods... Yea, I've been having trouble getting motivated enough to put my work down on paper lately, but this thread makes me feel like there's still hope. Damn you thread I was this close to giving up!

Oh, and publishers will like you. Your English degree says "I LOVE BOOKS" and that makes you a desirable candidate for the publishing field, much more than an engineering degree.

    Aspiring writer here.

Taking my first actual creative writing class in college at the moment.

Prior to this, I'd just been entering short story contest after short story contest, reading as much as I could, and always stealing, stealing, stealing.

Course, I've never won any, and while that admittedly brings disappointment, cliched as it is I feel like I'm honing a craft.

Do I enjoy writing? Hell yes I do. Would I like to make a living out of it? Damn straight. Is it any good? Well. That's the thing, isn't it. Improvement never stops, no, but I wonder if there is a point where I should just put down the pen.

Quoted for truth. After my degree, the people scattered to either become teachers or publishing types. One of these demographics is much happier, and much richer, than the other. It will not be hard to guess which, I reckon.

And on that note, I have to crash. I lost track of time, and I need to drive Katie to work in... uh... 3 hours.

Thanks for not calling me a cunt, /tg/. I'll go back to being anonymous tomorrow, mainly because I like 4E and it's safer to be hidden.

It... it brought back the feeling I had back with the Red Box... DON'T JUDGE ME.

    Later, gang.
