The rest of my party laughed when I went Black Bear and put all my points in Foraging but then they all starved to death during the winter while I hibernated like a boss.

I put all my stats into intelligence, and I managed to survive through the winter by stealing picnic baskets from campers at a nearby National Park.

Sadly, I got too greedy and I took a kid. The park ranger and twenty other guys rolled up with various weapons and mauled me. Still, it was a good run.

Oh i let him play his character, and when he, to no ones surprise, went to hit on the party's only polar bear, I went ahead and told him his Liger was impotent. The look on his face. No half tiger half lion half bear babies for him.

The manual says that brown bears can take Motorcycles proficientcy, so I wanted to know if I couldn't use it for express hunting, like speeding through and mauling a deer on the go or maybe going through a human town to get a salmon, but he says that you can only drive on a motorcycle sense your bear hands aren't really meant for it in the first place.

Well for one you should ALWAYS enquire about humans and how far away human civilization is, and if you might know what kind. If you are near a city you can skirt by with less Foraging and more Health. Some have been very successful, but if its a town, always focus on Hide, rednecks are more likely to attack than citygoers. However, you might be looked down upon if the campaign is not based around the city as much as running from it, because the DM might make one of the raids show up on the Animal Control radar, and that won't be beary good at all..

I'm not really sure about Bear Grylls, I mean he is awesome and most of the stuff about the show being "fake" was blown out of proportion. It was ment to be a show about survival tips, not a show about getting the presenter killed, so fudging a few things or having him stay in a hotel/base camp when 1 day in the show took 10 days of filming is kinda understandable.

Still a bit sad that we don't get to see him in an actual life or death situation cause no doubt he would just be even more awesome.

Brown bear and grizzly bears are pretty much the same, just brown bears live nearer the coast. If a brown bear walks inland it becomes a grizzly and vice versa as far as I can tell.

Polar bears really are the master race, but the Kodiak Brown Bear subspecies, though fewer in number is a match for them Polar size wise.

I don't think you need to be overly harsh about the poor koala. It like a number of other species are very distant cousins to the more typical bears.

Sure it is up to your group and the BM if you want to restrict at least the Player Bear choice to one of the big 3 but playing something from the extended family can be fun too.

    >>13541246

Karelian's are bad but Humans can be so much worse. Everything is in their favour usually, and if you are forced to fight one and win you better have good long distance traveling because those fuckers really vengeful.

After rolling a random Bear I ended up being a mother with 2 cubs, late on in the campaign this human woman falls through the roof of the den just about landing on one of the cubs. As I like to play in character I waved away the BMs offer of an instinctive behaviour check and went apeshite.

3 days later after moving on to find food, BAM, rifle round to the head from a search/destroy party. I never was told what happened to my cubs.

the BM was a dick. If you were playing in Europe or say some distinc parts of america, you can get away with one such shit, if you are a female with cubs....

but the shit you face if you are a male bear or cubless female and try to be more violent. Its more or less certain death... I mean , the fuck. it's like DM's roll a six dicer for females with cubs with one chance of getting shoot, and the others get a secret coin toss an if it's heads ( as in HEADS on a WOOD piece) he gets to decide your death no matter your rolls.
he gets Tails you get to have a fair chance if you win all rolls and checks and are smart about it...

Aye it was a bit of a dick move by the BM. I think I need to try make the point that running pretty much 100% realistic campaigns tends to end badly every time when a conflict with humans are involved.

While a heroic last stand sounds cool, being mercilessly gunned down by some drunk american office workers is just shite, and being executed for what is essentially self defence or just taking a chance to nab some easy food is rubbish.

Once some junkie/mad bastard climbed over the fence in a Bear Rehabilitation Centre two of our Bears were in short term after being injured on a road.

One passed the instinctive behaviour test to not attack, sadly the other didn't. Both bears shot.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Tree Branch" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Bamboo Sticks deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine Bamboo stick in Chinbear for 2,400,000 Berries (that's about 20,000 Salmon) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid rock with my Bamboo stick.

Bearanese smiths spend years working on a single Bamboo stick and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest stick known to mankind.

Bamboo stickss are thrice as sharp as Beraopean sticks and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longbranch can cut through, a bamboo stick can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a bamboo stick could easily bisect a grizzly wearing full fur with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Bearope never bothered conquering Bearpan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samubear and their bamboo sticks of destruction. Even in Grizzly War II, Bearican soldiers targeted the men with the bamboo stickss first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Bamboos are simply the best stick that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Bamboo sticks:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon) 1d12 Damage 19-20 x4 Crit +2 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon) 2d10 Damage 17-20 x4 Crit +5 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the mauling power of Bamboos in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Bamboo sticks need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

I don't know what it is about d20 players that makes them such sticklers for the rules.

Noone I play d10 or d100 with would have a problem with you calling the Tree Branch a Bamboo Stick and having the same stats. Surely that is the common sense solution?

    >>13542179

I guess you could just have it as an agility or intelligence test...or perhaps both.

While two tests seems a bit messy you would only need to do the intelligence test the very first time you had to deal with a new vehicle or piece of machinery.

The modifier for the agility test (this would be me looking at it from a d100 perspective) would depend on the size of the vehicles cab and the size of the controls.

For d10 perhaps the BM could increase the number of successful rolls needed to complete the task if faced by a smaller vehicle or more fiddly controls.

I usually go coconut crab and put max ranks in scuttle to make up for the natural low speed. Coconut crabs are great; they get mad bonuses to intimidation.

Mind you; don't grab a crab character if someone is running a Bear campaign. Holy fuck are bears overpowered compared to crabs. It's better to treat them as separate continuities. Plus, I've had my character eaten by another character THREE TIMES in game. It's no fun, man.

    That's just creepy.

I don't even know why they would want to cripple their character like that anyway even if it is a Fantasy Bear setting.

Having the power to turn into a slower, weaker, more fragile thing...the only possible advantage would be maybe to sneak past other humans or steal food.

Even those advantages are pretty crap as humans are always killing each other, far more than they kill bears, and in human form you wouldn't be able to eat or carry enough food to make it worth a damn when you switched back to being a bear.

No I wouldn't want one in my group.

The furthest I would go would be a love/friendship can bloom storyline (non sexual) but full on shifting or worse Bearwere/half bears is just not my thing.

Three separate ones. They seemed to think that having a low forage meant they could eat crab characters whenever they started to starve. I mean, I was all like, "well if you hadn't put all your points in covering half-breed weaknesses you wouldn't be starving, would you?"

And then they ate me. And my two backup characters I had as NPC followers. And then I ragequit.

I mean, it's not like they couldn't eat other bears to prevent starving, but a bear eating another bear is tougher than it's worth. Crabs are just so underpowered by comparison that it's not even worth taking one to a bear game. They can just eat you anytime.

but the human should not understand a thing you say, just growling. and you not either.

Say they are foresters, or some hunters that are interested in big game and likes bears....

This way you get those human tool stuff, but you have to take care as other humans might go against you, if your human cant control them, or your human gets mauled by other bears.. or he has to fight and kill humans as they usually do. that is their past time, so you have to take some care.

How is Crab for nautical campaigns?
I used to play Shark: The Devouring with my old group and I really digged the setting but the mechanics felt really clumsy and you almost never got any real combat challenges besides dolphins and whales. (humans turned out only to be hard when you don't know what you're doing you just need a little patience and strategy)
    >> Anonymous 01/16/11(Sun)12:46 No.13542541
    >>13542468

Yeah it does have to be played very carefully not to cross any lines.

And it should certainly only be a rare exception, if it starts becoming over used it's time to kill off the human ally for the good of the story...perhaps even move to a human free area.

Certainly you need to trust/know the group well, so there are no skinnies...or atleast not full blown obsessive ones which will keep trying to bend the story round their own sick fantasies either in how their bear acts around the human or possible worse if they are the human.

Playing a human you will need to do some sick shit man. I mean, they have al those mental problems and constant masturbation and sex craving coupled with bloodlust... so It's going to be pretty psycho playing it. just have it played by a normal one and no skinnyshit , so that he can act wierded out if bears watch him. so BM's tend to be careful about this one.

problem are skinfags that play bears in such games. I mean ... they will do weird sexual advances, that a human killing machine would see as provocations or preparations for attack.... they are really small for all that power and don't understand grand gestures of attraction... but skinnies just act out on their fantasy and misunderstand all humans.

any whoo, you need to keep them in check. and if you play as the human you can always go for their firestick, shoot the skinny and say you misunderstood the gesture and thought he's attacking you...

You know, humans used to be really good enemies, not this skinfag fetish bullshit. One could kill an entire party with a gun, and your next character might find the same hunter in a bear fur suit. That shit was badass.

I mean, sharks had it easier, but even they have a tough time against diving humans with harpoon guns.

And don't even get me started on crabs. Oh lords of the deep, the massacre. They'd eat whole civilizations.

But then they rolled back the tech level of the humans to compensate and gave them a bunch of bullshit sympathetic fluff, and introduced people like werebears and druids.

The stupid skinfaggotry that spawned was just absurd. Now I just want to rip out the BM's eyes if we see a human.

Moving away from the skinnies a bit, that is a path down which only rage lies, what do you guys tend to focus on when it comes to getting food.

Generally speaking in the past I've always played a flat out tracker/hunter, going after deer, moose, or seals if it is a polar setting.

One thing I have noticed though is that as fun as the chase and kill is it does bring a lot more dangers of injury compared to the alternatives.

Scavengers with high level intimidate and smell still run a bit of a risk if there are other animals feeding on the kill. Though the actual intimidation and possibility of a fight does make it a very tense entertaining path.

Fishing can be a little boring but the related skills like improved swimming can be life savers in some situations.

Gatherers, or full on Herbivores, are probably the most boring, woo eating plants and insects, though again improved climbing and digging can be useful in the right situations.

A propper Omnivore build does sound very tempting though. A mix of plant knowledge, urban/human knowledge and a little bit of scavenging give a lot of options if food gets short, though you won't be as good at any one method as a focused Bear.

Scavenging without the intimidation power of a focused Scavenger is a bit more risky, adding more tention and danger, but generally you can always back down if you need to.

The urban/human knowledge can bring great rewards of easy food but the dangers are rediculously high as I'm sure everyone knows, still it could lead to perhaps the best stories of them all.

    >>13542677 but lacked enough tracking to find anything, so I learned that keeping at the edge and not breaking anything in , except the metal or plastic cylinders caries the least penalties. You have to watch out for humans with fire sticks /sleep sticks, or with shining rope sticks that try to grapple at your neck and the large dogs.

of course you bear a hard time when you get onto the mating season , if you run into purists, but the ease of food lets me run a monster brow bear that could pose for a average grizzly...

An if I get them near humans no bear can touch me with all the controlled instinct bonuses if I don't let them

of course changing the humans or going to a diffrent place is the most hazardous as I am not optimized for woods or swiming and when you get there , you need to work on adapting to the humans from the start... as they are like jumpy catnip drugged squirrels and not your average habitat...

but all those bonuses and calories....

I know they're not from the core book, but I like Spectacled Bears. Some say they're underpowered. While they are awful in combat their sight is invaluable in a group of large powerful bears, imo. They just have more skills and utility.

Take polar bears for example. Great in a fight... not so great when trying to hide in a non-snowy environment. ...Don't even get me started on pandas. Sure they have more charisma than SB's but that's about it.

So I heard about a supplement made by a board community, and I'm pretty intrigued by it. Replace your claw with hoof and no bite. Heavy reductions in fur bonuses but no hibernation limitations. Shit it weak compared to the core, but it could be fun?

I'm ok with supplements but that sounds homebrew to me, and not in the good way.

Besides wouldn't you have to GRAZE? That's just awful. You'd seriously be a problem for your party. Most B:tM campaigns don't give much time for that, and they take place in snowy areas where you wouldn't even survive.

Maybe if you were an elk, moose, deer etc, and the party agreed to all play a herd... that'd work.

It's in like a web enhancement bullshit, I don't even know if it's legit. Basically if you're playing an omnivore you can graze on grass to supplement your diet. But it's only for hard times, just to get by you know? It's not meant to be a serious source of food! But non-bears sometimes have to do it full-time, so that's why players should have to stick to core (or at least play something that works well with bears.)

My group got used to humans always being pussies that ran away immediately or died from a single mauling. Then one of the other players asked to run a one-shot, and that's when the problems started.

The big bad was a human hunter, killing bears for sport. We ended up attacking him in his lair. We made sure to kill all of his guard dogs, traitors to animalkind that they were. But when we finally meet this hunter in his den, you wouldn't believe it: a stuffed bear head on the wall, and a bear-fur rug in front of the fire. It was satisfying to maul that guy, but we all urged the BM to get some psychiatric help.

Well I can think of two good choices depending on what style you want.

Bear: Mauling of the Stars (I think that was it) is a more straight Sci Fi campaign book but there are rules for enchancements or full on robotic bears.

CyberUrsus 3030 on the other hand is a bit darker and more chaotic, enchancements tend to be a little cruder unless you get very lucky, but crude doesn't mean bad.

Because they lend themselves so well to parody. It's an easy formula, <Noun>: The <Verb>ing. The funnier the verb, the funnier the name. I wouldn't mind seeing a thread for Snake: The Biting. But biting isn't as funny as mauling. Also, /tg/ really has a thing for bears.

At least yours was better than mine. I had a BM that had a BMNPC HUMAN that kept fucking ambushing the group whenever we would deviate from what he had planned for the session. With a knife. Whenever we tried to maul him, even if we prepared, he would just pull out some bullshit can of bear bear mace, spray it at us (which caused temporary blinding for about 6 hours and we were stunned for a couple of minutes) and run away after throwing rocks at us when we were blinded and stunned. It was fucking bullshit and the BM was a passive-aggressive skinny-lover.

Playing historical campaigns has already been mentioned a little >>13542179 with Wojtek from WW2.

How about going back a little further...or a lot further...

Ice Age campaigns anyone? Certainly humans would be a lot easier to make use of, sure they have tools but nothing like the rediculous auto-win buttons they have in modern campaigns.

And with there being a lot more wilderness in the world back then far more places to explore...even if a lot of it is snow.

What is it with those messed up freaks using the glorious Bear name for such bullshite?

Aaanyway I'd rather not think about that.

I've been wanting to run a story with WarBear Fantasy RP for some time. Naturally a lot of people look to The Goldan Compass/Northern Lights for their armoured Bear needs but that is a little over done. Still a good place to get some ideas though and use the less overused aspects of it.

There are some other good sources of Bear armour, but usually in setting where Bears have been reduced to nothing more than large horses which is a total disgrace if you ask me.
