What was /tg/'s opinion on DoW2 and CR? Did it 'feel' more like the tabletop experience compared to DoW1? How did you feel about the change in art style from DoW1?
    >> Stop Asking Generic Questions. Anonymous 01/17/11(Mon)07:56 No.13552547
The tabletop game is in general closer to the fluff, however there were elements of the campaign that were even truer to the fluff than TT, so aside from the few things they got wrong, (of which none come to mind right away, which is a great sign), I am pleased with it.

However, DoW1 was just so unlike 40k in both tabletop AND fluff, I tend to think of it as more of a game that roughly tells the prelude story to Dawn of War II, and in its own right, a game that is only BASED on Warhammer 40,000.

DOW1's art style felt closer to Games Workshop's however, DoW2's art style was more 'grittier'.

You can't argue with better graphics, but one thing that seriously bothered me is, FC and Thad looked like guidos. Others, like Avitus on the other hand... a man so bad ass he needed a new jaw built in? Fuck yeah.

I'm interested in getting DoW2, but my friend was encouraging me to get DoW1 (somehow). NOW, I've heard that both are dreadfully unbalanced, but DoW1 moreso. Is that true?

Also, didn't 2 have some bonus expansion pre-order bullshit or something?

The expansion came via a 2GB patch, when you buy the expansion cd it installs 1MB and activates the content.

Didn´t like it. Nor DoWII. Just too small scale for my tastes. And the whinny, bitchy squad leaders. I liked the stoic squad members a lot more. They keep their mouth shut and do their job. Like they should.

Would have been better if it were closer to CoH.
Closer to TT... no, not really. Too small scale, too much fucking wargear (honestly, it felt like playing WoW) and too few vehicles. And too retarded opponents.

Depends on your tastes, DOW1 is a conservative RTS whereas DOW2 is a totally different game, more like a tactical RPG like Fallout Tactics.

dow1 stacks everything in favour of new races. Winter Assault (1st exp) was fairly balanced
Dark Crusade(exp2) had nigrons with their immune-to-morale flayers whom you can teleport across the map in a massive assault, which was a gamebreaker. But the single player is fairly fun...
Soulstorm (exp3) had the Sisters, and they could build transports with laud hailers. Think flame throwers that boost YOUR morale. Without using vehicle cap.

DoW2 drastically drops scale of the game, you will never use more than 5 squads at a time. But everything has been polished out. Jetpacks no longer look like they're walking on an invisible ceiling. Heavy weapons offer a tangible threat, with cost. And cover is your life. Think, Company of Heroes in space. Alot of people dislike how Elfdar have 3 turrets, space marines are not invincible assholes and tyranids are closer to Zerg. But it feels solid, to me anyway. I like the first DoW2 expansion, especially single player. You can even play in coop with a friend. And best of all, the biggest flaw, Windows Live goes away in the second DoW2 expansion.

...but yes, they are giving wargear with preorder. I bet it's only single player though.
    >> Anonymous 01/17/11(Mon)08:25 No.13552718
So disappointing. Good and fun, but so many disappointments. The voice actors not sounding as excited anymore, the addition of Company of Heroes mechanics, Davian Thule and Eliphas having different voices, squad limits that only make sense for Eldar and Marines, but not Tyranids and Orks, 2 Space Marine only campaigns, the mod support, and Cyrus.

Don´t think you can compare it to CoH. Main difference being that CoH is actually good. And has non retarded AI. And that you have a larger scale. And better Maps. And... Well, just about anything.

DoWII had too much of a WoW feel to me with all the special ability spamming and Gear collecting. I´d have loved it if it was closer to CoH. It isn't though. Stop comparing t.

Can anyone tell me if Elphas/Araghast were aware of the fact that the Blood Ravens Chapter Master was a heretic? Otherwise its a huge coincidence that Black Legion would invade the recruiting world of a corrupted Chapter.

    >>13552741
It's never revealed, but implied. Most likely they wanted to conquer it and recruit for the black legion, and Kyras ok's it, since he orders all fleets to FLEE FROM THE BLACK LEGION when facing a full scale demonic incursion, from the demon he himself had bound?

Frankly, BR are beyond retarted to me. You take corruption if you stay for over 20min in a space hulk. Kyras is a librarian that was trapped on Auralia as it was in the warp. And escaped via a space hulk SEVERAL CENTURIES LATER. I wish i were making this up. The man spent the better part of a millenium in the warp, and was promoted to chapter master.

I liked DOW2 and CR over DOW1, although CR was ridiculously short and the main game had some pretty ridiculous design with the repeating defence missions at release at least. I'm fairly eagerly awaiting Retribution and how they've managed to implement the campaigns in it considering it's not priced as a full fledged stand alone games usually are.

I doubt it, what do they have to fear? All Dawn of War games have been commercial successes, with each one being more successful than the last, and CoH not only was a commercial success but also got several awards for best RTS, and even though it's balance might suck i'm a firm believer that the gameplay itself and the mechanics are far better than Starcrafts, not that i dislike Starcraft.

Not to mention that by the time DoW II was being worked on Starcraft II had not even been announced, they would've had to make drastic changes and even then Starcraft II came out an entire year after DoW II.

I don't think Starcraft had anything to do with it.

DOW1 is larger scale and the campaign is fun (up until Soul Storm but that is a whole other tale) and I didn't play online much.
DoW2 is small scale, better graphics, and I like the gameplay a bit more. Campaign is pretty fun and I like the wargear and leveling up (ducks chairs). The missions get a bit repetative in the first game while the second goes by to quickly and has a final level that is forgettable. Despite that I like both games and eagerly await Retribution.

Fluff is tolerable, the 15 marines v Hive fleet definitely throws me every time.

I don't quite remember the Warboss (I really should finish my current run though), but the damn Avatar had, I think, six million regenerating health and the ability to one-shot you, a couple instances of which were rediculous. I had most of my guys standing by the shrine, and if they were standing by the side closer to the arena, the fucker would still kill them.

Because the PDF just defended the cities, the Eldar and Orks were busier hindering you then fighting the Tyranids, and the 285 other Marines only arrived by the end. So the majority of the campaign was fought by 15 marines. That´s why.

The avatar is easier than the warboss. Just approach via the shrine, spec everyone for ranged and keep shooting him, if he comes at you run away, he won't follow past the first flight of stairs.

Maybe you should reply the campaign, 2 companies were there from the start, the one under Davian Thule and your's. And just because you were also fighting orks and eldar doesn't mean they were not fighting tyranids.

And it's not a hivefleet, it was a splinterfleet. And splinterfleets have been defeated by less, see Maugan Ra soloing a splinterfleet of Leviathan.

Maugan Ra thing? It's on the Tyranid 5th ed codex on a 2 page map with descriptions of battles against Leviathan.

The DoW 2 company things? of course not i'd have to go play the campaign and take screenshots, either way Thule was definitively under the command of a full company, and in the end Angelos comes with another, so at the very least that's 2. Far more than 15 marines.

Just because you don't see the entire battle doesn't mean it isn't there, for example in the mission where you have to defend the gates of calderins from Mek Badzappa there's a Predator tank there with a lot of scouts and marines, yet you never see other Predator tanks.

Dawn of War 2 has one of the best single player campaigns in an RTS hands down period this is undisputed, CR is just even more awesome when it comes to single player.

Okay here is the deal with multiplayer, Company of Heroes is the true sequel to the first Dawn of War games, if you like base building, large battles and such, go with Company of Heroes (also note, CoH is in no way fun or balanced in multiplayer and you will be rushed in the first minute).

Dawn of War 2 tried to more emulate the table top and it is based around mass, micro management of usually 3 or 4 squads trying to hold usually 2 or 3 objective points, it is actually really great if you enjoy micromanagement and prefer aggressiveness ahead of turtling and base building.

They are two very different style of games:

Dawn of War, Starcraft 2, CoH - Macromanagement, mass building and constant rushing and pushing out units.

Dawn of War 2, Warcraft 3 - Micromanagement, based around total control of a very small number of highly customizable units and using their abilities to the fullest.

I think we both know what it means.

A Blood Raven Scout is surveying the carnage following a battle where he fought side by side with the Emperor's Finest, the great Ultramarines. Hundreds of brothers died, but victory was won, as the Ultramarine and Blood Raven apothecaries go about recovering the Gene-Seed of the fallen, the Battle Brothers do the grim work of recovering relics for the Chapter.

The scout spots a power fist, painted blue, which has been blown clean off of its previous owner's arm. Naturally it would be rude to take without asking, so as quietly as he can the scout mumbles "did anyone drop this?" After a quick look around that no one has answered, he snatches the powerfist and puts it in his bag. This ritual continues with the rest of the Blood Ravens across the battlefield. After the battle the Ultramarines count their relics and lament how much was lost in the battle, while the Blood Ravens count theirs and praise how much was gained.

Have you seen Tarkus' corruption quest? He pretty much slaughters a bunch of chaos space marines, and says "The fucking blood ravens are incompetent thieving idiots. I am going to fix it or be consumed trying."
All of the Chaos Rising traitor quests except Martellus were really damn well done.

    Alternative ending to Ultramarines:

Blood Magpies have stolen the Hammer while ultras were planetside.

Blood Ravens seem to have black marines, you know? (Salamanders don't count, they're coal-black)

    So uh... Space Niggers?
