They wouldn't be too good at making armor, because they already have a great natural sort. Instead, all throughout their history, they never had to worry about direct personal attack on each other due to this armor. This has made them a wise people, having had time to develop without threat of violence.

It's also made them really fucking good at assassinations, because the only way to get around that ramor is if they're not expecting it...

    I actually did.

I made a huge semi-domesticated version called Pangoloths. They were these big, slow monsters that pulled the caravans of a nomadic race called the Yesmi. They were hand-reared, extremely loyal and could tear solid rock apart with their claws - but really actually pretty terrible in a fight. Pangoloths just basically went straight into ball form at the sight of possible violence. Those big claws? For breaking apart anthills. (Giant mutant ants the size of house cats)

    >halfcheeseling

    Con -2, Cha +2
    Favored Class: Bard

Halfcheeselings are a sentient race of humanoid cheese, born from the union of a human and cheese golem. As half-cheese, they are known for being exceedingly delicious and are the favorite prey of a number of goblinoids. More civilized races attempt to treat halfcheeselings with the dignity of a civilized race, but are disturbed by their custom of eating their dead. To a halfcheeseling, ritual cannibalism is a way to preserve the memories of those long past. It also makes a really good dip.

Halfcheeselings make poor fighters due to their soft exterior, however they exude a delicious scent that attracts other races. Halfcheeselings receive a +4 bonus to Profession: Chef, and French as a bonus language.

    >> Anonymous 01/25/11(Tue)15:34 No.13655640
“A pangolin, also scaly anteater or Tenggiling, is a mammal of the order Pholidota. Pangolins have large keratin scales covering their skin and are the only mammals with this adaptation. They are found in tropical regions of Africa and Asia. Pangolins are nocturnal animals, and use their well-developed sense of smell to find insects. Pangolins spend most of the daytime sleeping, curled up into a ball. The physical appearance of pangolins is marked by large, hardened, plate-like scales. It can curl up into a ball when threatened, with its overlapping scales acting as armor and its face tucked under its tail. The scales are razor-sharp, providing extra defense. Pangolins can also emit a noxious smelling acid from glands near the anus, similar to the spray of a skunk. Some species, such as the Tree Pangolin, use their strong tails to hang from tree branches and strip away bark from the trunk, exposing insect nests inside.”
So… kind of like tropical dwelling armored short people? They’re not front line fighters for sure, but they’d probably have some kind of dwarven defender like class that plays on their natural armoring. Or maybe something that tries to wrestle its enemies to death? Aside from that they’d make for decent Halfling replacements for when you want to break out a setting for brown islander elves.

“The tongues of pangolins are extremely elongated and extend into the abdominal cavity. Large pangolins can extend their tongues as much as 16 inches, with a diameter of only 1/4 inch. Pangolins lack teeth and the ability to chew. Instead, they tear open anthills or termite mounds with their powerful front claws and probe deep into them with their very long tongues. Pangolins have glands in their chests to lubricate the tongue with sticky, ant-catching saliva.”

    >I‘m seeing the potential for a lot of tongue based feats, kind of how the Tieflings got feats for their tailparts. They’ve got claws that hamper their manual dexterity, so most of their fine manipulation is likely tongue based.

“In pangolins, the section of the brain that relates to problem solving is highly developed. Although their problem solving ability is primarily used to find food in obscure locations, when kept in captivity pangolins are remarkable escape artists.”

Yeah. If I was going to do pangolins they'd be big, strong, slow, ponderous, mostly placid, patient, hard workers. Most are suited to manual labour jobs but they are fairly intelligent so some become scholars.

    +STR
    Natural AC bonus.

maybe +CON, maybe bonuses to endurance.

As a twist you could give them +INT and make them naturally adept magic users and scholars, but it wouldn't be a particularly optimal race/class combo.

Wow, this idea is really taking off. I'll post the poorly-organized text from the txt file I've been using as my note-seed.

I dislike the 'barking dog-demons' interpretation of Kobolds in Second edition and the 'draconic repto-goblins' of the 3.x systems.

I fluff them as advanced Pangolins. Hard-scaled mammals with acidic stink-glands similar to a skunk and powerful burrowing claws. Good at climbing and digging. Rudimentary agricultural society, mostly tribal, but with a keen eye towards defensive fortifications. They drag their knuckles when they walk, but possess very hard claws (natural attacks).

They inhabit temperate zones. They're mound-builders. Their burrowing lends them towards fortified villages, usually surrounded by an earthen bulwark and topped with a palisade. Their religion (that I've created for them) is a crude system of ancestor and spirit worship with no true 'gods' per se. They get extremely offended if any of their ancestral burial grounds are disturbed in any way. Agriculturally, they're mostly foragers, but many have taken to cultivating small bug-farms (they are small sized, and like their unevolved kin, they get a great deal of protein from eating insects) inside sealed underground burrows. Tool use is minimal, since their claws serve as tools and weapons. they have no melee weapons besides claws, but they've developed crude throwing axes for ranged combat. They carve wood easily with their claws, especially when hollowing out a log to use as a canoe. They have yet to master domesticating animals on a large scale. Isolationist, they rarely raid unless provoked, though hunting parties will harass anyone trespassing at a grave site.

Pangolins are arboreal mammals characterized by diamond-shaped plates of horn coating their bodies. They tend to curl up into a ball when threatened, like a hedgehog. They have strong claws on their forelegs which they use to dig for grubs and excavate burrows. Their foreclaws are so long that they tend to walk on their 'knuckles'. They possess strong acidic musk-spraying glands, like a badger, but not as strong as a skunk's. Their long tails are useful for hanging from tree limbs, balancing, and acting as a shield when curled up (the tail covers the underbelly and face). Many people consider them adorable.

    >>13658249
maybe, but you're fighting its instincts at this point. It'd be better to use it as a construction engine, carving ditches and ramparts, or as a mobile bunker to hide behind. Training is easiest when it exploits the animal's natural instincts. You want to siege a castle? Dire rats. They'll chew through stone and concrete easily if they think there's food inside. Need to clear out a large number of troops? Dire skunk. Pangolins are far too passive for siege work.

Pangolins tear apart solid rock to get at delicious ants. I don't see how using Pavlovian (more like Pangovian lol) conditioning for a giant Pangoloth to equate "fortress" with "giant ant hill" and "delicious trainer-given treats" with "delicious ants" is that much of a stretch.

It would have to be truly massive for that - pangolins are about the size of large house cats (I think - maybe closer to medium dogs) and they have tiny mouths.

A pangolin the size of an elephant would maybe eat mice, to give you a comparison.

I mean there's already plenty of exaggeration of their tongue's prehensile qualities (or lack thereof).

And really we're exaggerating plenty of pangolin traits into making this race.

That's like saying "Pangolin brains are rather small. You guys are exaggerating their sentience." This is fantasy we're talking about. Their scales should be equal to or better than that of various reptilian races.

The Elemental Plane of Australia is the Tenth Hell, and the 667th level of the Abyss; the only thing the demons and devils ever agreed on during the Blood War was that neither of them wanted to risk invading it. It's rumored that Sigil isn't a cage meant to keep the Lady of Pain in; it's a cage she built to keep Australia out. The last time it was coterminous with the Forgotten Realms, the Spellplague happened; the last time it was coterminous with Eberron the Mournland appeared.

The Elemental Plane of Australia is not to be fucked with.
