    1.55 MB Son of Kromgol 01/31/11(Mon)15:27 No.13731949
There are times in a man's life when he must look at himself and admit his mistakes. He must evaluate himself and-- if necessary, change himself. There are other times when a change is made for him. Something happens in his life and he is forced to live with the choices he made, or forced to compensate and tolerate the choices others have made. I stand at the brink of one of those choices.

My father passed away late last year, and as such I was changed, changed utterly. I found out who many of my real friends were. Found out who was important to me. Found out who he was to the bitter end. And found out what I can be.

He stood proud above many men. Not because of his accomplishments or achievements or salary. He was a man who very few had achieved in their lifetime-- Genuine charm, and genuine happiness.

So brothers in arms-- Be you black, white, yellow, red, green, Xenos, Ork or humie-- Stand with me on this day. As we remember my father Kromgol.

As promised, the scans of the sheet.

Well his brother was trying to fight for a lot of his stuff, including his property, car, computers, everything that limey bastard could get his hands on.

After a lengthy legal battle where I had to present evidence that my father hadn't talked to him in almost 12 years and get that shit squared away I had to move back to Texas. In doing so I lost my job and car, and now am in a small town with my mother and step-brother settling in.

I scraped my savings together and bought a new printer for the family and made the scans today.

I've had life wrecking days where the world collapses and they make you a different person, but remember you're still a person and you need to take care of your own needs as well as those of others when you can.

If you want to play 40k buy a 4x4 board, and then make some terrain out of card, it's really cheap and you can play 40k any time you want.

Of course you never found Melor. He is far too slippery a scoundrel to be found so easily. He has moved silently away into the night. Perhaps someday, when a hero must steal the chill away from the winter or the world needs a thief to filch the blue from the summer sky, he shall return.

Incidentally, is it just me, or is it usual to find out that you hardly knew someone once they die? When does a man die?

When a bullet fired from a pistol pierces his heart...

    NO

    NO!

I mean, I have penciled drawings from not even two years ago that have turned into smudgy pieces of shit, but this looks like it was drawn, crumpled up, smudged a bit, and inundated.

Sorry to hear about your dad, but it doesn't take three months to scan a copy of the character sheet that made the first thread famous, no matter what the extenuating circumstances were. Are you trying to say your dad's brother was litigating against you for possession of a character sheet?

I figure this story would fit here.

My dad died of a massive heart attack when I was five...never even got to know him.

My first character, ever, was a Halfling Fighter with a Napoleon complex and a "if it doesn't work, hit it" mentality.

My mother walked in on me and my friends playing in the basement one night and just paused, smiled a bit, and asked if we wanted any snacks from the Tops down the road.

She tolled me later that she just thought me and my friends were getting high down there...which we did every now and then to be honest. Anyway, back on track.

My mom bright me into her room after everyone left and showed me a box full of all of this old D&D papers. Original books and character sheets filled the box, but one caught my eye:

Cord: Human Fighter. Size: 3' 7''.

Under the description it read plain as day:

Napoleon Complex. Very short temper. Doesn't handle puzzles or questions well.

I commented on it and showed my mom my character sheet. She almost cried when she said that her and him used to play together in the same group and that used to be his favorite character. His reasoning was the same as mine: "Nothing is funnier then imagining a rabid midget attacking things ten times its size."

We talked about him for a few hours and we hadn't brought it up since.

Now I live on my own but....yeah...

They say he still wanders in the Northern winter's winds. Righteous are his steps, Merciful is his blade, and Vengeful is his fury.

When you ask the Northman what he fears, he shall say, "A blade in the gullet while I slumber, dishonorable death of old age, and the judgement of Kromgol!"

And when you ask him what he loves, the Northman will cry, "Honeyed beer, the warm bed of a woman, and the guiding hand of Kromgol!"

If you find yourself alone in the winter wastes, when night falls, take shelter and be silent. For it is then that you may hear the wisdom of Kromgol Strong-Arm, Earth-Mover, Honor-Bound.

And you shall wake with the wisdom of the Stone of Ages.

I hate to say this, as I am sad for your loss, but either this is a fake character sheet, or your dad was an idiot.

    1) We know this is not AD&D 2E because of the lack of THAC0 given on the sheet, so this is just AD&D.
    2) See the related picture. You cannot have strength 19 in AD&D. It would be 18/10.
    3) A first level fighter rolls a d10 to determine hit points. 31 HP is impossible.
    4) "Hit ADJ" is a flat value, not a percentage. See picture, again.
    5) AC in AD&D goes DOWN from 10, not up.
There's probably more, but anyone with an old copy of the AD&D player's or DM's guide can confirm this themselves...

The pristine-condition pencilwork combined with the clear lack of coherence with how AD&D works points to this being a fake. I know you guys want to believe it: the story of Kromgol is touching. We've all experienced loss, and emotions cloud our judgement. Just look a little closer: this isn't a real character sheet. How much damage does he do? Why does the table of "adjusted to-hit armor class" not filled out, and in fact, blatantly ignored?

Again, since you've never played AD&D, and certainly not in 1981, you have no idea how incredibly fucked up some games were. Rules were more suggestions or highly debatable points in those days, and you may have gone through 5 character sheets before you actually got one right because filling one out with more than the most basic information back then was like doing taxes and having to itemize deductions and account for accelerated rates of depreciation without the MACRs tables.

I played RPGs during the 1980s. There were almost no rules lawyers/optimizers/whatever, and in fact playes often "didnt know how to play the game" in any rule-based way whatsoever. The absence of technical conformance to the official rules of the game and not being interested in filling in every single piece of data actually makes the documents more convincing, not less.

TG lost the original... so this will be my Father's euology... shut up and listen... to Carl Sagan... as for the rest... such are his wishes though his one and only response at an attempt at rpg was juvenile at best. The uniform love of father and son is always felt and poorly expressed. Thank you for sharing yours with tg

Let's try a little reasoning. The link you posted says explicitly that it replicates the old character sheet. Now if I make a character sheet in my word processor that faithfully recreates an old character sheet, does it make the original a fake?

See? You're a troll. Stop being a troll, or Kromgol will slap your shit.

The gods looked down upon the land. In many places it lay in shadow, held under the thrall of gloom and trolls. Yet as they watched, a light began to spread in the darkness. It began as a pinpoint, and then another, and soon a constellation burned against the backdrop of the night. It did not wipe out the darkness, and in many places the shadows attempted to consume the light. Yet no matter how hard it tried, the light burned from one heart to another with a glory that could not be conquered.

And having seen this, the gods looked up. And above them, Kromgol smiled.

I think a genuinely charming man who had found true happiness would not wish to be placed on a pedestal as we risk doing here. Read the exploits of Kromgol. They are not commandments of a fickle deity, nor are they iron pillars of faith to which a paladin must abide.

Kromgol isn't the figure you set out on your quest to become. He's the one you're glad you end up as. Not the one screaming his name at the top of the mountain, but the one screaming up the mountain for whoever is about to cause an avalanche to come down and have a drink.

The story of Kromgol and his son has made me feel like telling a story too.

Me and my mother haven't really got that much in common, and back when I used to live at home we used to fight allot.

I started getting into Tabletop gaming, comics, computer games and the likes. She would joke that she had 'two sons'. One clear memory I have of my preteen years is of her coming home from a shopping trip I had not wanted to go on, giddily handing me a Backstreetboys CD. I was never really into boy bands, and when I said she could keep it as I wasn't interested she burst into tears. I've only got one other memory of my mother crying and that was many years later when my grandmother died.

Eventually when I hit about 18, I moved out. We started getting along allot better now that we weren't forced to be in each others presence all the time. We've found ways to spend time together than we both enjoy, for instance: She has been to a few LARPS with me, she loves getting to dress up and play social characters. cont.

So anyways, a year or two ago now my mother asked for some of my old dice, I wasn't sure why but I complied. I dug out a few dice I'd stopped using because they'd either rolled one to many 1's or got a character into too much trouble/killed. A few days later she returns to me with this bracelet made out of dice. She bought a few more dice to fill it up, but the really cool thing about it is the things the rest of the bracelet is made of. You see when I was a kid there was this hair bobble I used to wear religiously. It was fluffy and had a few bright little wooden beads in it. It broke after constant use, apparently my mother had kept the little beads, and now here they were on this bracelet.

She's still with us, but this thread makes me want to go spend more time with her. Maybe go look around online at pretty dresses and stuff for larping in, or ask her to find something she thinks would suit one of my new characters.

Thanks SoK, made me think about how precious time right now is, I'm going to go see my folks!

    I agree.

He wouldn't want us to be like him. He would want us to be ourselves, living our lives fearlessly by our own principles. Not to repeat his tale among whispered campfires, but to forge legends by our actions.

Who here will rise and become a Kromgol of his own?

I think Kromgol is important for a number of reasons.
First off, his battered, stained character sheet is evocative of the roots of the hobby. No true fatguy can help but be moved by it, i mean look at the date, 1981! As a true grognard, that's around the time I, myself, began exploring fantasy worlds in games. And Kromgol's atitude towards the hobby is worthy of emulation. he played a simple, no frills fighter. No multiclassing, no spells, just hit with sword and roleplay. And was he any the less for this? No, in fact he is iconic.
Second, his son is honoring him in a way that is truly heroic and epic, and that is something that many of us, perhaps, are wistful and envious of. Let me be the first to go out on a limbs and say that my father was not as supportive of my imaginative pursuits and "strangeness" as Kromgol was of his son.
And third, it's a reality check. The people that indulge in this hobby, despite their flights of fantasy, are real, mortal human beings. their lives end and it casts a light on how fleeting, temporary, and precious the human experience can be. he didn't even die of old age, in fact I'd wager that Kromgol was probably not much older than me (40), and simply rolled a bad "save vs traffic" check.
One day, you will die, and when you do, you should be so lucky as to have an offspring worthy of your legacy like the Son of Kromgol.thank you for sharing, and reminding us that our hobby, though young compared to some, still has a rich tapestry of human experience behind it.
I was at a bar tonight with friends, and at one point I made a toast to kromgol. Many of them did not understand, but my one friend who had shared gaming with me did, and we drank to his memory. And , ulitimately, to the memory of us all.

    Elf Paladin reporting,

You have my condolences OP, I can do little to ease your pain but know that for what it's worth I'll be doing the following to keep your father's memory alive in the pastime he loved-

    1. In every game I run there will be an half-orc NPC of some importance named Kromgol. If the setting doesn't have orcs, fuck off, Kromgol makes his own god damn rules.

    2. Fit the great hero Kromgol into my Orc warrior's backstory in that one game blizzard makes.

When I first played second edition DnD I played a druid centaur that dual wielded bastard swords and wore full plate. Also on account of his horse legs got an extra 2 attacks at 1d6 per hove every turn on top of his two bastard sword attacks for which I took no penalty. We had to many younger players to grasp the concept of thaco (myself included) so we came up if a percent chance you block that was raised with every armor up grade.

You wanna find some flaws in that character? You want to make a list of the basic rules it broke? Go right ahead but it doesn't make him any less real then KROMGOL.

    Isn't it nice, /tg/?

That a part of everyday life - the death of a parent being a trial every man will, if not hopefully, then at least propably, will encounter - can bring out such willful happiness in the people of a group with little personal attachment to the event itself? The man behind Kromgol has passed away, and his son is here to tell of it again, and as trivial his goodness may seem in terms of his achievements, we collectively adopt him as our father in spirit for nothing but his positive outlook on life, and those hobbies of his that link him to us.

Still, by the end of the Shaman's story, and by the beginning of the planned raid against the nearby Elven Settlement, he found himself at the head of the troops, screaming at the top of his lungs:

    "FOR BLOOD"
    "FOR GLORY"
    "FOR BATTLE"
    "FOR KROMGOL"

Why is the story of Kromgol so moving? Is it because he was an older fa/tg/uy who passed? Nay. Was it because he played a heroic, flawed and well thought out character? Nay. It is because his tale, the tale of the man who played when DnD was in it's infancy, a half-orc with a pet cat and a thief for a friend is now passed on down to us, by his son. Martial glory, love of gaming and filial piety come together to create a truly great story.

Kromgol's cat is definitely going to be a unique artifact in any future DnD games I play. It will be used as an offhand item and will increase the number of attacks the player has a round by 1 and increase the players strength by 2. If the player ever puts the kitty down, it will run away and look for another owner that cared for it as much as its original.

/tg/ has a longer memory than it sometimes seems. Know well that Kromgol shall live in the hearts of many an elegan/tg/entleman and ca/tg/girl for much time to come.

Two years ago I concluded a series of silly threads about a lich that brought great merriment and adoration. But that pales in comparison to the brotherhood and unity that Kromgol has brought to /tg/ through such a universal tale.

Though few probably remember me, I give to you all internets that I received throughout the course of my drawfagging as well as this humble image. I was in need of a noble orc chieftain in my current campaign, and so I will bring the legend and memory of Kromgol with me to give to my group.

Kromgol WILL feature prominently in all of my campaigns as a man ascended, not a god nor an angel. But a man who lived.

"The half-orcs sit in reverence around a statue of great male, with eyes looking in both direction. He holds a longsword and little else."
"I ask our translator if I can join the prayer circle"
"He says, They do not pray"
    "Wait, what?"
"One doesn't pray to a man. Kromgol was Kromgol. A half-orc born of little, who did much. His was the sword that culled his foes and saved his friends. He ate little, possessed little, and lived by his own hand. We do not pray to Kromgol: We remember him"
"But he was just a man! Why bother with a dead hero?"
"Even Death could not conquer Kromgol, for it is said that he had a son... and his and his blood shall be the sword that guides us. We remember, and wait..."

In athens, greece, it is 5:25 am right now.
A ridden of all hope guy sits on his pc,and thinks of going to sleep.
he has been socially outcasted by many for his hobbies on rpgs and tabletops.
He has been scolded for day-dreaming at school, and now at work.
He has been called "manchild" for dreaming of living into another world, of valor, of honor, of fights, of conquest, of pride, of magic and fantasy.
He comes across this thread, and through it, the original thread.
He forsakes his sleeping. He reads it all, like a holy script. He sheds a manly tear. He makes sure to carve into his memory all about Kromgol and his Son, and all the praising other people say about them.
He lights a cigarette and falls in deep thoughts.
"It will be harder to find new people to play now that we have grown up. And for sure,i will be mocked again for getting into these games again. My mother will call me a good-for-nothing. My cousins will laugh. Oh,i forgot...she said she wont go out with my anymore if i am wasting my time, instead of being with her all the time...heh, i guess that's how it goes..."
He closes his eyes, as he exhales the smoke, before putting off his cigarette. He leans over, and grabs a notebook, and a pencil. He writes the first line.
"...many years have passes, but the legend of Kromgol the Brave is still being told around bonfires..."

I thought I might contribute my skills,
I know it's not much but I know what it's like to lose a loved one that you haven't really connected with.

My grandfather died from a heart attack,
my uncle, tried and somewhat was successful in getting what he wanted. My grandmother now looks after him, at least she surrounded with some of their stuff.
My uncle has sold a fair abit of her stuff, claiming its either for more space or for money to feed her.

I wasn't as close to my grandfather as my sisters were, and I regret it.

He will offer them a beer, and in that moment, the dwarf will feel the strenght of Kromgol in his veins, finally becoming a Battlerager as he wanted. They will look for Kromgol, but he will be no more. Just the strength in battle as the proof of his existance.

I will tell of Chiyoko, the elf runner that had been cruelly abandoned by her parents, wanting nothing more than to find them again for revenge. But when she were reunited with them at last, she couldn't bring herself to harm them, or reveal who she was as she realised why they had abandoned her like they did.

And of Sten, the stoic stone guardian. He had stood abandoned for hundreds of years until the party found him. He helped them free the world of evil, and to thank them for having showed him the world once again, he stood in the way of the terrible explosion the evil one caused upon death, perishing to save his comrades in arms.

To his son, who has shared the memory with us and thus kept him alive, I raise my glass.

Go in peace, Kromgol. Have this thread as your funeral pyre. Godsspeed, old friend, may your journey be paved with the corpses of kitten molesters.

May the tales of Kromgol and son never dissapear from our hearts... and archives.

Son of Kromgol, you are now entitled to make a character to live up your father's legacy... and post the stories here.

The thread humbly rides to the horizon now, and we all pay Kromgol our last respects, his broad frame eclipsing the setting sun.
