    >still an exciting new time!
    >Last time http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/13747094/

You hear your legion finally rouse behind you, and turn from facing the field to you men. Some of them look frightened, others grim and prepared. Mostly, they stand silent, forming loose ranks facing you, waiting for your command. Sansa walks up to you to stand to your right, Jayne to your left "Where will you deploy the men to, Commander?" your aid asks, more than a little nervousness in her voice. Far off behind you the call of a horns revely can be heard. A few of the more frightened, and younger, soldiers flinch, most of them perk up ever so slightly, as if some small victory has already been won simply by the fact that they rose without such a call, and are already prepared for battle.

I'm thinking Warlords in the dead middle with Cornelius and Gaius on their flanks. Maurauders and Cornwal mercs on the flanks of the legionnaires to cover their flanks. Have our archer units all along the line behind them to act as anti-air and just general ranged supremacy. Our cavalry will be split at the edge of the flanks a little further back to avoid being archer targets right away and to exploit chances to try to roll their flank if we break someone.

Artillery will sit behind the middle of our formation to rain death on key targets (I suggest we focus on cavalry first if we can) with Lena in the middle. Wulf and Laelith should be split up I think with one on the left flank of our formation and Laelith on the right flank. This way we have a decent range of elementalism to hit anything that hits our line and range cover for all of it. Those earth pits should do decent damage to the enemy but my highest hope is they serve as an obstacle on the map and limit their movement.

I don't even want to tell you, because you'll never take it off.

    I suggest a rousing speech.

"Men, I will not lie. Today we face a foe that outnumbers us and by all rights should crush us. But I will not let that happen... no, WE will not let that happen. I've never once led you to defeat, only victory, and this day we will do so once again! It will be bloody, horrible work. You will be strained to the breaking point, and perhaps beyond. But know that this is what we are here for, what we signed on for. We shall show them the might of the Empire here, and protect those we love so back in Imperial lands. They WILL break on our shields, like water around rocks. We WILL send them running, retreating, and pleading to never again face our might. And most of all, we will show these bastards ONCE AND FOR ALL THAT THEY WILL NEVER DEFEAT US!"

My main issues are: 1) We only have two legion units and 2) I dislike the idea of putting our legion's right next to the pit. They're not going to do much fighting if they are right next to it and they're our shield wall. We want them to be fighting. Plus, if we deploy further away from the pits and we're lucky enough for the pits to collapse after some of them have already crossed, we can easily crush the guys trapped on the other side of the pit.

    >> Anonymous 02/03/11(Thu)21:28 No.13772530
If the grass is long enough to support it, I suggest having Laelith and some of the other fire elementalists be shielded by some pavise-bearers and create a rolling wall of flame into any cavalry charge. The horses will spook and/or get roasted, and so will any levies around them.

I also suggest throwing lots of calthrops all over the place and falling back, slowly, during the fighting. Seed the ground they have to advance over, as it were.

Repeaters should have poison arrows and absolutely pummel those levies. If we can get a chain-reaction of routing panicking units going on it will be great.

I think the problem with using fire is we won't be able to control it if it goes out of control so it could hurt us just as much. Also, we don't have the supplies or time to prepare a lot of what you suggested. Note for the future - we need those kinds of things prepared ahead of time.

We could deploy the scouts behind the leftmost legionary wing as a support unit and the Cornwall Mercs as a strategic reserve, to either aid the warlords or fill a gap in our frontlines. Not too sure about the hunters, they could go anywhere.

You signal for all ranged units to fire when they have range, with special attention given to the knights as they approach. A few shots fire off from the mangonel, crashing into one unit or the other. But the real damage is done by the small fields of spiked pits you set up the night before. The levies take devastating losses as they cross them, goaded by the soldiers behind them to press forward, though only the lords bodyguard are so lucky as to have all of the pits made safe by corpses as they pass. By the time the enemy forces are within range of all of your weapons some of your more uncouth men are nearly on the ground laughing at the plight of the enemy soldiers. The unmounted Pegasi knights are the only men who seem unaffected by the pits, even as half of their number fall into one, they charge onward, a cry orf sheer rage and heartache emitting from their lips. Finally the horsed knights thunder from the forest and rush on ahead of the rest of the force, looking to shatter your eastern flank with their charge. Far off in the distance you can feel the thunder of hoofs milling about anxiously behind the enemies main line of advance.

Those knights need to die before they ever reach our lines. Most of 'em are going in that pit, but some aren't; see that they fall.

Aside from that, withering fire into the sergeants and lord's units; it'll likely make them more reluctant to shove the levies forward if they're under serious arrow fire, and more time when they're at range works to our advantage.

Lena should be getting ready to hit the lord's unit with a big blast, starting charging shortly after they come into range. Not quite plasma beam scale, don't know herself out, but there should be a large hole where no one is left alive when she fires it off.

"Behind Us!!!" you hear Lenas magically amplified voice shout over the roar of the approaching troops. You signal for any earth elementalists on the east flank to stop the knights, then turn to see approaching Pegasus Knights, no more than twenty by your count, they must have moved after the raiding stopped, and stayed too high for your men too see. YOu turn in time to see a mass of steel and flesh begin to tumble into pits, both man and horse screaming in pain and terror, those not dying from their fall being trampled by their peers. Both units reach the 454th, though neither is in a proper wedge formation. The unmounted knights avoid the pits their peers landed in only to hit another, though they still do not let that falter their charge. As the knights approach, wulf allows them one final greeting, the lightning cooking more than his fiar share of minor nobles in their saddles before he doubles back to allow the legionaries take the charge, which stops dead upon your crimson phalanx. Of to the east you can finally feel the thunder of approaching hooves, while the other two units of men at arms start down the battlefield from the north, aiming themselves along the areas cleared by the corpses of their countrymen.

The distance between the pit and the marudaders is big enough for the mercs to get a good charge in. Thats what i mean, they have all the momentum at that point as the levies will still be stumbling over their dead. Or may even try to flee. that'd be the smart thing to do...

As the enemy is recovering/stumbling over the last set of pits, sound the charge and hit them with everything we've got (in terms of elementalism, magic, ranged weapons) all at once. Turn the battle from a defensive to an offensive one right there, in one terrifying moment for the enemy.

We need to neutralize the enemy cavalry first.
If we allow our formation to come apart in a charge, the enemy men-at-arms will crash into our flanks. They have the numbers to engage all of our cavalry and still be able to outflank and engage our infantry.

It's that or let the 70 infantry GET charged. Which would be far worse. It's not like they'll be able to hold the line.

I thought originally that the giant pit in front of them would stop them from actually having any enemies barreling down the middle at them, and the middle enemies would be forced into the legions. Apparently our pits don't effectively block shit, though, so we need to make the best of it- have them charge while there's an advantage to be seized and order another unit over to back them up.

Finally, the levies break from the pits, well, mostly, their bodies are still cushioning the pits for the men behind them, each smaller pit in the groups of pits filling after fifteen to twenty impaled, crushed or trampled corpses fill it, with multiple small pits in each area you trapped. Not that is a safe filler, as many men still catch ankles and become stuck, fall, and are subsequently trampled. Even more unlucky men have enough bulk to fall through the corpses and befome impaled themselves. The levies continue their onward rush, even as the soldiers behind them carefully pick their way ahead, stabbing at the ground as the go, compressing and shifting in their formations as they go, though this method is far from perfect. you signal for all units designated to deal with incoming flying cavalry to do so, and for the others to focus on the charging units until they impact your lines, at which point they are to give their attentions to the approaching sergeants. arrows and bolts begin to lance upwards, and Lenas voice begins utterances in Draconian, readying to blast the approaching flyers from the sky. This soft tune is on your ears for only a moment however, as the levies smash into your front line, half-filling further pits as they do so. The wrathful cry of steel on steel drowns out all others as Vohzd Lennis leads his men off to begin flanking the enemy line. The levies are being butchered by your men, though their numbers keep them in place.

As the bulk of Lord Wellis' more skilled forces press onward at their plodding, cautions pace, the dwarven mercenaries tarry, and some infighting seems to be breaking out amongst their numbers, even as a wing of Men at Arms thunders past them, aiming through the gaps in between units, clearly intending to do the same thing to your units. Their smaller, more agile horses avoiding the rearward pits, most of which are by now clearly marked by blood and flesh.

As the battle rages on, you hear rather angry shouting from Collin and Captain Betzia, and while you cant make out the exact words, there is more than a small amount of cursing and mention of numbers. Whatever their goading is, the difference in the battalions performance is immediately noticeable, as they begin to gain ground and mercilessly scythe through the levies, unbound by formation they kill even faster than the units on their flanks. Either way, you signal for Uurist to relieve the beleaguered mercenaries, and your rear lines begin to shift to accommodate the move. Next, you signal for all ranged and elemental power to focus on the southward rushing men at arms, and are satisfied to see the initial voley slice away a full third of either unit.

You hear a pained animal shriek from behind you, and a pegasus smashes into the ground, dead "Orders?" you hear Lenas magically enhanced voice ask, as the Cornwal mercenaries set to receive a charge. The battlefield sounds more like a slaughterhouse at this point, but you know that once the second wave of Uurlanthi infantry hits home the tune will change.

We took on the Vohzd's forces because he liked us and hated Uurlanthi; why can't we take the war god's favor because he likes us and would get a kick out of seeing our enemies slain? It's the same situaton as long as we put nothing on the table.

    >>13774776
No, the situation would have to get more desperate to warrant offering the gods something in exchange for bailing us out. Right now we lose nothing and demonstrate a willingness to acknowledge their importance at a critical time. Which is exactly what a seventh praetorian should be doing with his time.

Who else would they want in that position other than someone that already communicates with them on a regular basis? You unleash a rippling wave of fissures underneath the Men-at-arms trying to bisect your front lines, the death and havok wrought by that action, combined with the combined fire from several units of archers slaughters them to a man. The unit to their east fares better, but judging by Laeliths shift in her unit, that wont last for long. You can hear captain Kystris shouting to his men to hold steady as you wade through the unit, and see the massive wedge of cavalry approaches them. Again you signal for artillery to fire into the Lords bodyguard, then, looking in that units direction you see that they are, and ice grips your chest when you realize why they are having no effect. A bubble of shadows seems to be enveloping the unit as the approach, it will be useless once they reach melee, but until then... "Enemy mage sighted, Commander" Lenas voice chirps in your ear, measured, controlled, prepared "Permission to engage?" The voice in your ear overrides even the sound of the levies shattering before your front line, of the Warlords dodging through the marauders to contact the levies. That small, timid yet determined voice overrides it all. They have a mage.

    A) It's a free resource that isn't a favor
    B) Why not use a resource that can save the lives of your men if it's pretty much free and we see our maniple as a close family of sorts

Yeah, actually, if the gods liked us enough for it I would fully support calling on them every major battle. What would be wrong with that? We use everyone ELSE on our side every battle; if your side has divine favor then you have a duty to your men and nation to exploit that for everything it's worth, just like any other resource that might save their lives or bring victory. There's nothing special about the gods that makes them too hot to handle.

We might win this battle if we willfully ignored our ability to use ANY single asset available to us, including the gods. That doesn't mean it would be smart.

This is war and some of our men will die. I accept that. And if we don't fight it every step of the way to our victory, we're a fucking terrible leader and deserve to be sacked.

Laelith can keep up doing what she wants to wipe the next unit of men-at-arms and our archers can focus on the sgt's. If the dead eyes can hit the oncoming archers, they should do that. The position of 7th Praetorian was originally to confer with the gods to ensure that the Empire follows a path that does not conflict heavily with any god or pantheon.

However, we are at a time after Man and Orc had fought AGAINST the gods and their avatars, and who have built their current civilization on the premise that we do not need the gods.
In such a political, social, and cultural environment, the responsibilities and duties of the position of 7th Praetorian MUST CHANGE.

Why would they want an ambassador to them whose primary motivation is suspicion?

Even if we win, that road leads to us desperately suppressing religious cults left and right as the gods use means other than the traditionally established ones to build their influence in the Empire because we're choking off their ability to speak at a high level. There will be massive internal unrest, because I have no doubt that the gods would rather see Degnar shattered than see it strong and largely shutting them out.

We don't have to work FOR them, but we absolutely must work WITH them. Otherwise we will be actively harming our nation.

"Engage" you reply, before bracing yourself for the approaching charge, setting a small field of fissures before them. After the ground before you is prepared, you throw the most effort you can spare into setting the earth to rise up against the arcane shield protecting the lords bodyguard, along with all of your maniples ranged firepower. The shield pulses and flashes, fluctuates and pulses, until finally, seconds before the bodyguards contact the warlord, it shatters. The torrent of fire that tears into the plate-armored guards, warhammers hefted high above their antlered greathelms is staggering. Then, the two units smash into each other, mingling and mixing. What draws your eye however, is the insane lightshow thrown off by Lena and the enemy mage. Briliant white light rays collide and explode against beams that absorb all around them, spheres and orbs of luminosity collide with each other and minute shields thrown off by the mages. Foul purple lightning arcs through radiant golden magefire, both combatants moving at incredible speeds. Lenas soft, white swirling arcane designs shine brightly on her bare arms, almost as if they are trying to make up for the luminosity consumed by the harsh angular designs on her opposites arms.

Behind the duel you see the Kharynchek warriors slice through the mercenary longbowmen like a heated knife through butter. Javelins already arcing on ahead and into the next unit of mercenaries. The final phase of the battle has finally begun. You muse to yourself as the onrushing men at arms are decimated by prepared spikes and fissures, as well as the Swiftriders now charging along the edge of the massive wing, exchanging arrows and insults.

Cornwal meets the charge and then our cavalry smacks their side. We must break them. Lennis keeps up his smashing of the mercs and our archers support our front lines. Have the deadeyes focus on the lord's unit to try and give Lena some assistance in dealing with the enemy mage while the scouts hit the incoming cavalry. Artilery can also focus on the incoming cavalry. Elementalists also focus on the lord to help deal with the mage. Command.

If you want me to explane then I will.
My main problems with calling upon the gods are thus:

1 It cheapens the victory. If we call the deus ex machina to fix every thing then how can there be honor in that. I know we do not cair about honor compared to the lives of our men, but honor is very important to an warrior society like the legion. If we take our soldiers honor from them I (personally) feel like I can't ask them to fight and die for me.

2 It escalates the battle. What would be our plan if we learned that our enemy has the boon of a god? Call on a god ourselves. Right now this is a battle between men. If we call upon a god now we change this battle from an border conflict into a fight of faith. Calling on any divinity inadvertently make the world easier to influence and us easier to play.

If people can explane away these fears then I would support asking help for the gods.

You drop a massive sinkhole beneath the onrushing men-at-arms. Seconds after nearly half of their number fall into it to their deaths, the cavalry of house Garlian and the Kermnios Swiftriders slice through the men who had not yet reached the hole, slaughtering them to the man. A massive flash of darkness draws your attention back to the center of the battle, where Lena and the dark mage are still hurling energies back and forth at each other, as the battle rages about them.

You break from the mercenaries as the last vestiges of the men at arms skewer themselves on the spears of the mercenaries. You slash your way through a few of the guards to your target, his ebon horns seeming to eat the light around them. You lash out at the man with your spear, but a blow from a nearby guard knocks the weapon from your hand. You catch the retalitory blow of your foe on your shield, but he does manage to drive you back a step as you draw your blade. Back and forth your weapons shriek, meteorite on at least the same. The lords hammers steel haft catching as many blows as your sheild, over half of your expertly placed blows knocked aside or waylaed by guards. /just ask and I will happily make this a fair fight/ a voice booms in your head, a voice like gates crashing and thousands dying, thunderous and powerful, its mere presence makes you miss a step, though the blow still lands on your shield. Again and again you strike at Lord Wellis, only for his armor, weapon or guards to prevent the blow from finding purchase. He trained them well, trained them to fight as one.

1 Whether it does in fact cheapen the victory, I'm not certain but would doubt. In many settings (see: real world, D&D), calling upon god(s) to aid you in your fight does nothing at all to lessen the accomplishment in case of success. Even if they're viewed as completely external entities in a setting like this, I don't think it would be seen by the troops as lessening their accomplishment any more than, say, hiring mercenaries (another external group that heavily influences the outcome of a battle, and is seen as perfectly acceptable). But if you're right and in-character the strong sentiment would be that someone who calls on the gods is only showing that they can't hack it without them, then that's an argument against communicating with them at all except in the most dire of needs that I can't really contradict.

2 I'm not going to lie, it does indeed escalate things. But just as with magery and elementalism, it's only a matter of time before our enemies start calling on divine boons on a regular basis. Will we keep fighting on pure human strength and ability then? If not, why is our policy effectively to let the enemy shoot first before responding in kind- shouldn't we be taking full advantage of what the divine can offer just as we are in other fields?

    >>13775820

"Let us settle this without interference." you calmly offer the nobelman, before rocking the ground around the two of you with a fairly powerful quake, throwing the guards away from the two of you, you complete the isolation by raising stone spikes around the two of you in a rough circle. You glance over to Lenas battle, she and her opposite both funneling all of their might into beams of magical energy both of them dripping sweat at the strenuous effort. The noble rises to rush you before you can see the outcome of the exchange however, smashing his hammer into your chest, your vision spikes red and you feel ribs break, big ones.

"Perhaps you should have not dissalowed our men from interfereing, it may have prolonged your life." Wellis taunts, flourishing his hammer has he approaches your prone form. He raises his hammer, only to have his feet knocked out from under him by your legs. You rise, through the pain, and wait for the nobleman to rise, his growl of frustration made inhuman by his helm. Around you, the battle continues to rage, the exhausted Legionaires now beyond the aid of you life elementalits, and it shows in their skill. Lena is on the ground, her left arm scorched and smoking on its outside, of the other mage, there is no sign. No. We don't turn to the gods, ever, unless they are willing to treat us like equals and make a fair trade. "Boons?" Don't make me laugh, that's just like the drug dealer on the corner, but with power. "Hey kid, I have some great battles here... first few won't even cost ya!"

We've already detailed our relationship with the gods. They are powerful forces that may or may not have our best interests in mind, and we will treat them as such. Potentially hostile, potentially friendly, either way they get treated as powerful and worthy of respect, yet equal. We will not accept 'free' lunches from them, because as we all know there is no such thing.

This guy is going down. Riddle the area around him with horizontal earth spikes projecting inward from the "ring" we created, so as to lock him in place. Then slam our sword right into his gut and give it a twist. Plus a few more hideous wounds once he collapses, just for good measure. Nothing immediately fatal, but enough to keep him from regenerating again.

Artillery, 50th, and 65th need to fire on the Sergeants engaging the 454th. They need support fire.

"This battle is lost to you, it was from the start." you reply, rushing in again. His first blow lands on your shield, the second in the dirt. You dance around the hammer and run your blade through his shoulder, signaling for the Marauders to change over to target the remaining sergeants. The Nobleman rises wielding his weapon with his good arm he comes at you again, you sidestep the blow easily, lacerating his knees again as you do so.

"LIVE BY THE HAMMER!!!" he cries out, defiantly, as you level your blade at his neck, standing before him, even as said hammer slilps from his grasp.

"DIE BY THE HAMMER!!!" his remaining men reply, their desperate fury redoubling, even as your men mercilessly wade through them.

"Rousing, but, you are beaten." you chuckle, breathing heavily more due to the broken ribs than to the fighting.

"Never." Wellis replies, a blade slipping from his gauntlet as he lunges at you. His face is still frozen in a roar of defiant fury when his severed head hits the ground off to your right. The battle rages for another half of an hour at the best, grief-stricken raging soldiers trying to avenge their fallen Lord. All of them die, brave as they are. Its a shame really, that such brave men had to be wasted, but such are the fortunes of war, you suppose.

Once the fighting has died, give a triumphant spartan-like howl then check for loot. this fucker had a healing helmet, if I'm not mistaken.

If I understand you correctly, you're willing to take their aid but only if they both speak politely and charge us for it. Somehow setting those conditions means that we're being wary and canny, and therefore makes things better. What the fuck.

All life elementalists immediately tend to our retinue first, including Lena. We can't have our most deadly and valuable resources hampered. Sent off a message to the Fist's commander of our victory here, in the forest, and the numbers involved. Ask if we have permission to raid for the rest of our guarding deployment as the enemy is most likely completely smashed before heading back to Dragonsreach. Then let's try to let everyone get some damn sleep.

But mostly, make sure that Lena, our ladies, and the rest of our command staff get medical attention. Including us.

Immediate medical attention for Lena and all critically wounded.

Set up camp; we'll rest here for the day.
RapidRiders, set up patrols. Once the soldiers are rested, send a prize detail to go to Wellis' camp and begin cataloguing our loot.

Priority resting for the Life elementalists, so that they can get right to helping heal the wounded.

You raise your sword above your head when only crimson remains standing "WHOSE BLOOD FLOWS THROUGH OUR VEINS??" you shout out, triumphant.

"THE BLOOD OF THE DRAGONSLAYER!!!" your men howl back, following with the exuberant whoops and cries of victory.

You make your way over to where Lena lies, Wulf supporting her head, Bellatrix nervously pacing near her. "I'm fine" she croaks out "it was only a ahhhh- graze" she assures Wulf, drawing back as he pokes lightly at the skin.

"The burn is deep, and severe, worse than any normal or arcane blaze could ever inflict, but..." Wulf explains, worriedly.

Before you can answer, Jayne slides off Stormcloud and looks the arm over herself. "Its more than treatable, though it is beyond my skills." nodding to the already rising medicae tent. Wordlessly Wulf lifts her up and heads for the tent. The girl looking back at the field, and you, guiltily "If she starts taking after you when it comes to wounds..." Jayne muses after the two of you are alone.

Well, I guess the death omen star really DID fall on Lord Wellis's head.

Pity we didn't get to capture him, but that's just how shit rolls. His fucking personal guard were goddamn brutal, even when reduced to 1/5th strength.
