Now that I've got your attention, for those that you don't know what the fuck I'm ranting about, allow me to fill you in.

About seven years ago, I stumbled upon a little system called D20 Modern, published by WotC. After running a few campaigns with it, I came to realize that as a system, it is simply Dungeons and Dragons repainted with a modern brush: There is no real differentiation between guns and ammunition(9x19mm, .357 Magnum and .45 ACP all do the same amount of damage), the depth of the equipment was lacking, and there were a multitude of rules that were just copy pasted over from D&D. I tried a couple of hotfixes(Read: Houserules), but it got to the point where I was just dissatisfied.

Rather than do the smart thing and just transition systems, I decided to write my own, about two years ago, using the resources I have at my disposal(PDF's galore, /k/ and /tg/, as well as a few people who deal with firearms, armor, and equipment in their daily life)

The product was Ops and Tactics, a D20 System Modern Roleplaying Game.

Now you may be asking yourself, "What the fuck do I care? D20 Modern is a good system if you fluff it out." And that's all good and well for you. But, I wrote this system for those who enjoy more depth and realism in their modern RPGs.

I do want to say, that first and foremost, this is a game, and is no means a overly complicated miniature war game simulator; I leave those things to companies like GW. What this /is/ is an attempt to create a robust, and fun Modern Roleplaying Game system, that focuses not on the characters being super powered, or stacked with HP, in order to accomplish goals, but characters who use their minds and realize that gunfights are not a soloution to /ever/ problem.

And so, I give you two years of my work, Ops and Tactics, 1.0

WHOOOO BOY! Here we go, I'll try to sumaraize it up as best as I can

    1. Lots of skills were combined into other skills, such as Repair into Chemical or eletronical crafting, just to name one.
    2. Feats. While I kept a good chunk of the feats form D20 Modern, I removed quite a few too, and added some of my own.
    3. Hit points, instead of rolling for dice, is now static, and the only thing that affects it, is Con score.
    4. Non-Lethal hit points are actualy their own hit points, and when you drop to 0 with them, you are knocked unconsious. Nore more of this "Con score is Non lethal HP" anymore.
    5. Introduced bleeding to death.
    6. Completely redid the entire firearms sytem
    7. Added Upgrades and customizations for Weapons(Melee and Ranged).
    8. Reduced the max level from 20 to 8.
    9. Lots of changes to the BAB, Fort,REf, and will saves, based on class.
    10. Introduced Special abilities, that ONLY the character's first level gets.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

..And thats all I can think of off the top of my head. There's more

most of my modern games involve zombies interspersed with odd BS, to get from point A to point B, instead of fighting regular zombies over and over again I have them roll a pool of D20s (a group of more than 2 does not need to do this unless they want to.) more low numbers means either barely scraping by or actually being forced to run away. a roll of 5 natural ones (or more) mean that you die. you get more or less dice based on how far you are going, and group size more high numbers mean more awesome stuff and a cross-pool average over 15 means awesome stuff happens

I do this to save time on combat.

a lot of stuff in my games is really just improv

getting the same result on a coin 3 times consecutively means they meat something terrible then roll for initiative.

each building/business will have a couple of MAJOR encounters (my players are FUCKING TERRIFIED of shopping malls)

I think it should be company policy to have the manuals in 2 forms, bloat and non-bloat.

the bloat is useful sometimes to the DM and the players. but sometimes it just get the fuck in the way.

    >>13962081
it's DAMN good artwork for the budget you paid then...

another bonus is that new player tend to be more familiar with things in a modern setting. this makes the transition to fantasy, future, or the fires of steam-punk much easier.

    >>13962129
not totally, they are more focused on cutting boredom. and as of late introducing the basic concepts of RPGs to a non-familiar individual.

and the time cutting allows for more wordy descriptions of action, better planning and fewer (read none at all) stats...

my modern games all start with this sentence

"you all wake up naked in/on an X with 1 Y each, there are/is Z around you"

where X is a location and Y is some slightly useful object and Z is some antagonizing force.

in my last game they were
X=the ladies undergarment section of the local walmart
Y=an old person walking cane (to humor one player who had recently broken his toe)
    Z=Z is for zombies

    >the simple answer is to allow for the flinging of spells, while not fucking up the other aspects of the system.

The only problem, is that while the Gun system in D20 modern was bad, the spell system in D&D is much, much worse(In my opinion). It's all over the damn place, there's no learning. You may learn a spell to armor yourself, and in the same moment, learn a spell to throw a fireball. Learning does not work that way.

So if(When) I do do that, I'll have to write/borrow a magic system that makes sense to me.

One to two well placed bullets will kill or seriously injure a character(Of any level, depending on the round) not wearing armor. I'm not sure of how well a gauge that is, but there you go.

The problem with comparing these two systems, is that they're not in the same realm.

Ops and Tatctis is Quasi-Realistic Modern RPG

    GRUPS is Everything

nWoD is a fantasy Modern RPG.

Since some of the members of my usual gaming group will be gone for a couple of weeks the 3 of us that remain are going to give this system a try.

The problem with having realistic gun rules where people can drop in one or two hits is that players will do everything in their power to avoid getting in a firefight. And when they do get in a firefight, it'll be over very quickly. And then you're left to wonder what was the point of writing down 75 pages of weapons and who knows what other rules that never really get used.

The system was made to be Equipment, and Detail, heavy, particularly when it came to weapons. Doing what you would suggest would counteract the whole point of even having more than one gun.

IT's very difficult to obtain tone of voice using simple written text.

Regardless. To answer his question on a serious, non sarcastic manner: The reason so many firearms are put in the book, is because so many firearms exist. Some people (Such as myself), prefer to go into deeper detail than "I have a Pistol." They wish to know the model, the make, the caliber, the color, the style, origin, of their equipment. This system is not for those who would gloss over details, it is for those who enjoy them.

Because it's a much more elegant solution to just list the ammunition types and then let players get 2-3 modifiers to a base gun I.E. Pistol, Semi-Automatic; Rifle, Bolt Action. etc.

So to make a glock you would get a 9mm Pistol, Semi-Automatic with the Reliable and Common Traits. Bam

I'm a big advocate of more realism in games.

Though I gotta ask: Why isn't damage just listed in the chart with the munitions characteristics? I can't find the damage for bullets at all in fact. I've no doubt is in here though.

Good job otherwise. You may have use a smidge too many individual guns though. I don't see the need for 22 different kinds of Glocks for example.

But that's not a Glock. That model could fit on any semi-automatic pistol. It has no distinguishing marks. What you're doing, is taking a generic pistol, and slapping a name on it.

As for Elegance. Realism and Customizeability do not sit well with Elegance. I'm trying to get /away/ from elegance, where cookie cutter weapons reign supreme. I don't /want/ cookie cutter firearms. That throws off the whole point I just said about detail.

    >>13963274
I've played games set in foreign countries. Really, all you're doing is nitpicking over the fact it has stats for everything. It makes a longer list. If a game detailed like this isn't your cup of tea, then that's fine. But some people (gun nuts especially) like it.

My constructive criticism? The legality system is too generalized. Laws vary by country, and a pistol license in the U.S is usually easier to get than a registered machine gun (which are really expensive now).

Also, I assume you have skills for gunsmithing, full-auto conversions and reloading?

Maybe you could add some improvised weapon examples, or just add more civilian guns.

Seconding suggestion on going to OPchan.

Maybe details for water/food consumption (doesn't have to be too complex), and powered equipment/generator rules. After all, SHTF is one of the big things for people who like milsim gaming.

Hey, that's the wonderful thing about GMing. You don't have to use what you don't like. It's there, if one /craaaazy/ player goes "I wanna shoot a sub compact glock in 10MM! or 357 SIG!". It's by no means obligatory to use /ever/ single glock and weapon.

But, I'm in the field where I'd rather have it and not use it, than need it and not have it.

    >My constructive criticism? The legality system is too generalized.

Oh god I know. I /had/ to generalize this because it would be too complicated. It's one of the things I left up to the GM, because in reality, only the GM can govern these things.

    >Laws vary by country, and a pistol license in the U.S is usually easier to get than a registered machine gun (which are really expensive now).

True! This is covered in Restricted items and Licenses. The system is also written from my perspective (An American Citizen), so most money notations(1 WP = 20 USD), and laws and such, are american.

Note: Yes, I know there are non-american gamers, but I could spend the rest of my life trying to incorporate every single country's quirks.

    >Also, I assume you have skills for gunsmithing, full-auto conversions and reloading?

Craft(Mechanical) or Craft(Chemical). Again, that's more of a GM thing, since the definitions for crafting things are leaning more twords the GM.

I added all I could come up with, any specific examples?

I wanted to save those for an expansion or something. While I do understand that there are modern remakes of cap and ball revolvers, muzzleloader muskets and all that jazz, I really wanted to concentrate on weapons made during and after World War 2.

The reason, is because archaic firearms, while aren't bad, do require their own little set of rules and a separate mindset that I have to get in, to do those. My original play, was to have a Ops and Tactics Past(Which I was going to call Missions and Munitions), and go to the Pre-WW2 Fireams, armor, all that.

Needs more civilian guns. Although not all of these are exclusively civilian, most of these are pretty common in the U.S:
Ruger 10/22 (by far one of the most note-worthy .22s)
PSL (commonly mistaken as dragunov in US, also pretty damn common for being a poor mans SVD)
Zastava M76 (DMR for yugoslavs, common in US)
    AR70/90, SC70/90 (Italian service rifle)
BM59 (basically a literal M1 garand converted to .308 w/a detachable magazine and full auto. yes, it's different from the M14 in performance)
    Kel-Tec SU-16

    >Needs more civilian guns. Although not all of these are exclusively civilian, most of these are pretty common in the U.S:

    I do agree, somewhat.

    >Ruger 10/22 (by far one of the most note-worthy .22s)

I can't belive I forgot that rifle, to be honest.

    >PSL (commonly mistaken as dragunov in US, also pretty damn common for being a poor mans SVD)

Then there was things like this, where it comes to Splitting hairs. If it's just a rebranding, then I don't really see a point to have mutiple entries, for the same gun. What is so different about the PSL?

    >Zastava M76 (DMR for yugoslavs, common in US)

The round, I'm kind of sketchy on including, to be honest.

    >AR70/90, SC70/90 (Italian service rifle)

    Hmn. I'll concider it.

    >BM59 (basically a literal M1 garand converted to .308 w/a detachable magazine and full auto. yes, it's different from the M14 in performance)

Intresting. I might add that one too. It sounds very uncommon, though.

Semi-realism is all well and good, but what I'd like to see is a system that simulates the gameplay of Counter Strike.

Where bunny hopping and noscoping with a large sniper rifle would be valid tactics.

Well, it was the post-WW2 Italian rifle. It's about as common as most guns that stopped being imported in the 90s (Daewoos and Norinco weapons, although not extremely rare like a Sig 551). The BM59 I mean.

The funny thing about the PSL is that it's only a poor mans dragunov. SVDs (chinese, civilian or military ones) range from like 5-14k or so. The PSL is a completely different gun, but alot of people with an untrained eye confuse them as the same. PSLs are also cheap in the U.S. They're also used alot by Iraqis. Difference is mostly that it's a DMR and alot more similar to the AKM rifles than the SVD, which is a sniper rifle.

Zastava M76...I don't know much on ballistics. But like I said, ask OPchan.

Also, there's the Browning BAR (sporting rifle),

And I suppose that you may as well start on the pre-WW2 weapons (there's tons of smokeless powder guns made before WW2) before doing flintlocks and all. May as well start backwards since, IIRC, the 1890s-1910s had a LOT of new designs made.

.17 Remington does the same damage as a 9x19mm, it is in the table. I mean the .17HMR rimfire, pic related, that is the caliber of the CZ 453 American, on page 149. It's based on the case of a .22WMR, but because of the smaller bullet I could see it doing less damage.

    I remember this thing.
I downloaded an earlier version of it a while ago. A few weeks ago it was on /tg/ I think.
I recommended making a large difference in damage between handgun and rifle rounds. But the guy making this said it would screw up balance if that was done, if i remember correctly. Looking at pg 168 I see that a 9mm round does 7 points of damage on average and a 5.56 does 10 on average.
In real life a 5.56mm round is on a whole other league than the 9mm. But then the gross game imbalance that would result by bumping up all rifle ammo damage is still there.
Hmm. This is a decent balance between a balanced gamist approach and a realistic simulationist approac, I suppose. My knee jerk reaction is to say 'up the rifle damage' but I already know the in-game downside to doing that.
This is a good deal more simulationist than most systems when it comes to firearms. I'll say that.

And I remember you specifically. I did change the gun damage around abit (I don't know when, I don't know what version you have.)

I'm glad you like it, though. And before you say anything. Yes. I know. 5.56 is weak, compared to Real life applications. But Hell, It'll kill most players on a good hit.
