127 KB Welcome, to Jurassic Quest! JP Admin !!4DbLS6HzSaK 02/22/11(Tue)18:25 No.14000970
The year is 1994. You are Frank Porter, a 31 year-old mechanic for International Genetic Technologies, Inc., better known as InGen. You were recently hired as a maintenance engineer on their Isla Nublar biological preserve.

The date is March 29th. Today is a Tuesday and it’s your second week on the job. After a laborious interview process and thorough background check, you were one of the lucky few offered a position in only hiring cycle since the park’s inception, in preparation for the VIP soft opening early next month.

Despite the incidents surrounding a worker’s death and the subsequent safety inquiries in the previous year, the Nublar preserve received the green light from legal investigators as well as official endorsements from paleoscientists Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler, and self-styled ‘chaotician’ Dr. Ian Malcolm.

You’ve heard only second-hand accounts of the incident, but you’re not TOO worried -- 24ft high fences and 10,000 volts separate you from the… wildlife, and there are security procedures in place for the protection of guests and employees alike. Still, you know just how dangerous some of these animals can be. You try not to dwell on it though. There’s work to be done.

Welcome, Frank Porter, to Jurassic Park.

Before we start, let’s get a few things sorted out.
You’ll start with the following skills:
    Mechanics [Basic]
    Park Knowledge [Basic]
    Dinosaur Knowledge [Basic]

Next, pick two from the following list. I'll take the first combination that gets 3 votes.

    Survival [Basic]
    Athletics [Basic]
    Firearms [Basic]
    Computers [Basic]
    First Aid [Basic]
    Vehicles [Basic]
    or
    Any Basic Skill [Specialty]

You can upgrade a [Basic] skill with a [Specialty] in that skill, as per the following examples.

    + Mechanics [Automotive]
    + First Aid [Lacerations]
    + Athletics [Climbing]
    + Dinosaur Knowledge [Specific Species]
    etc.

[Basic] skills are not required to attempt actions (i.e. you can still drive a car under normal circumstances without Vehicles [Basic]), but it will make more difficult actions easier to attempt or lessen penalties or failures. [Specialty] skills further this.

Additional [Basic] and [Specialty] skills will be largely chosen by the players, and will be acquired as you progress through the story or gain experience in an area.

You know that there are three power stations across the island. The hydro-electric station is on the north end of the island, powered by waterfall that empties into a small lake. The windmills are to the south, situated on a high bluff to the south-west of the airstrip. There's also a small geothermal plant on the southern tip.

You copy back, and inform them of your duties. You're happy to help though -- what's the situation?

"Copy. There's an old gas genny in the compound, though you'll have to bring fuel from the motor pool to get her going. The windmill grid can still maintain all major functions for at least an hour. You might be able to power down non-essentials to eek it out a little longer."

"There's a lot riding on this, Porter. The windmills power grid supplied the majority of the western island compounds, and at least 25% of the park fences proper...
We can divert some power from the geothermal or hydro grids if worse comes to worse, but not for long. Get on it. Over."

Perkins is easy to find.He patrols the route between the visitor center and the utility shed, and at the top of the hour, you find him between the motor pool and visitor center entrance.

"Yo, Porter, how's it?" he calls to you as you flag him down. After explaining the situation, he nods. "Yeah man, I'm with you, but if my supervisor finds out, it's your ass not mine, you dig?"

You fill up two large, red gas canisters and stow them in the back of the jeep. While you're there, you notice an emergency roadside kit, complete with six waterproof flares, a first aid kit, and a handheld area floodlight. You make a mental note and tuck it back under the seat.

Alright Porter, you're behind the wheel and Perkins takes shotgun, rifle in hand, and a long stun baton on his hip the length of your forearm. Anything else, or are you heading out?

But why would they put the visitor's center so close to it then? I understand they want to have the employees and visitors both close to the park entrance, but just plunking down a human-sized dromaeosaur enclosure right next to both of those is really dumb.
Shit, even the emergency bunker isn't that far away. They should've had the enclosure on the other side, so if they escaped they would have time to barricade off the living quarters and send out a hunting party. They're not smart enough to shut things down.

Not knowing what the problem is, let alone what part or parts of the power grid might be malfunctioning, you don't know where to begin. With the added fact that you're in the motor pool, the best you can do is ensure you toolbox is fully stocked before heading out.

Pulling away from the garage, you take the utility road that follows along the coast to the west. You feel the hairs prickle at the back of your neck as you pass the velociraptor holding pen. Even from the road, and with your engine running, you can hear the feral shrieks and screams. It must be feeding time. Pushing your foot down a bit firmer, you drive swiftly past down the road.

"Shit, I tell you Kendel pulled Aviary duty again this week?" Perkins tells you as you drive on, seeing the ocean blue flash on your right between the dense jungle. "Told me one of those pteranodon bastards grabbed the cattle prod right out of his hands through the cage!"

"You shoulda seen his jumpsuit from the time before that. Holes in it as big as your head. Damn..." Perkins shakes his head. You keep driving.

    3:47pm.

You can see the tops of the windmills through the treeline. It's a steep drive to the top of the bluff, but it's nothing the jeep can't handle. Once you crest the ridge, it's an easy drive to the Windmill Compound. A 12 foot high perimeter fence surrounds the grid and power shed. You can see the WARNING 10,000 VOLTS signs from here, but the telltale electric hum is absent, they must be deactivate.

How do we approach the situation?

Look, pretty much Jurassic Park's entire thing is that it's a zoo designed by people who had no idea how in the fuck to build a zoo and who didn't want to listen to anybody who did.

Also, when Hammond says "we spared no expense" on the construction, what he actually means is "the amount of expense spared was $0". Anywhere corners could be cut, they were.

On a slow board threads can stay alive for months. There's a thread on /d/ that's been around since January 1st.

Yeah... I would guess /po/ as not the slowest moving, but having the threads with the greatest longevity. It takes about a week for a one post thread to fall off the back page, but sometimes a model will get posted and it'll stay up forever as people slowly bump. There are still a couple of threads from early December alive there right now, and that's not at all uncommon.

If not, make sure to take a close look around the area before exiting the jeep to open the gate manually.

Perkins grimaces, "I swear, if something happens, I will hurt you." But he brings the rifle up to a ready position and keeps a look out.

Gate's lost power, so it won't open remotely. You'll have to do it by hand. You look around the area, and see some native, actually native, fauna scampering around. Nothing scaly.

You approach the gate, pistol at the ready. You observe handles on the side of the door, along with a large light at the top that's nonfunctional.

I say the first thing we need to do is ensure that the emergency generator has fuel.
Let's go back to the jeep and grab one of the jerry cans.
Also, use the radio to contact dispatch.
"Dispatch, this is Porter. I'm in the Windmill Compound, and the computer's reporting no connection at all to any of the windmills. I think we might need a full maintenance team for this. I'll apprise you of the situation when I take a look at the power lines."

    Great, another problem.
See if the computer has a schematic of the power shed, and if we can identify the primary power conduits. Let's find them and see what's wrong.
