"Awaken, Brother Lathemenos! The bat--- rages an-----------proaching!" a voice eagerly exclaims.

You explode in consciousness, hearts pounding. Your auspex is flickering wildly, and you can just barely make out two figures standing above you, under a cloudy gray sky.

"His sensory unit is malfunctioning, remove his helmet quickly!" Another voice orders.

Your hands leap to the task almost before the voice finishes speaking. You remove your scarred and crumpled helm carefully, and try to blink the blood from your eyes.

Standing above you are two Marines; marines you do not recognize; one with the markings of a Sergeant. They stand in the colors of the Ultramarines, and quickly, pull you to your feet.

You speak first. "What happened?" you rumble.

"Do you not remember?" The Sergeant asks, concerned.

Casting your mind back, you remember...nothing. Almost nothing.

    Flickers of gunfire and explosions.

"We were ambushed." Looking around, the grisly corpses of your former squadmates confirm your tale. Glancing at the ruined and corroded armor you still wear, and the crushed helmet at your feet, it seems a miracle you awoke at all.

"And you alone survived." The other Marine grimly agrees.

"No more time for idle talk. Mark this site for the apothecaries, Filos. The enemy approaches and the main strike depends on our heavy support." The Sergeant presses a gladius and bolt pistol into your hands, as the other marine makes a vox report to command.

"Brother Lathemenos, our squad was ambushed by the filthy Greenskins as well, and we are all that remains. Until the battle is won, you are now
under my command. We are to destroy the Ork artillery batteries on the hill to our west, and clear the way for the Whirlwinds that will take their place. Without our support, our brothers on the ground will be hard-pressed to win the day."

As you shift your grip on the sword and bolt pistol in your hands, something else returns to you.

You are not an Ultramarine at all.

    "Questions, Battle Brother?"

    Well?

(Whoa. Didn't think anyone would respond.)

The Sergeant, yourself, and Filos start making your way to the hill, alert for signs of another ambush.

As you take the rear, you quickly check your power armor for any distinguishing marks.

Unfortunately, if there was any kind of special markings on your armor, it's been charred away, or destroyed in the ambush.

You focus your thoughts for a moment and attempt to remember what happened just prior to the ambush.

(I was planning for us to be wearing Ultramarine colors, but fuck it)

Your memories are hazy, but the large details return to you.

You, and the rest of your Space Sharks squad had been assigned to assist the Ultramarines in scouting the Ork's defenses around the artillery hill.

You and your brothers had been dispatching poorly hidden Orks with ease along the great forest's edge, when suddenly heavy bolter fire opened up from deep within the trees, immediately slaying your Sergeant and the apothecary. You remember hunkering down for a moment behind a larger rock, and daring a glance over the side to pinpoint your attackers.

You remember nothing next. You must have been caught in a missile blast, given the destruction of your armor and helmet.

Something else tugs at your memory, something important, but it will have to wait.

"Filos, Orks to your right!" The Sergeant charges headlong into the brush without another word, as Filos does the same.

You damn your lack of auspex before charging in yourself, pulling your gladius and bolt pistol free.

Leaping a bush, you slide to a stop just as an Ork Nob rounds a tree, raising a Choppa with a nasty grin.

How do you proceed? Roll a d10 for success.

The Ork Nob leaps forward with blinding speed as you reach for your bolt pistol.

You manage to put a bolt or two into the Nob's upper chest as it brings the Choppa down awkwardly on your left shoulder, rattling your body but not doing much else.

You grin before headbutting the Nob in the face, breaking its jaw, and causing it to fall backwards.

"Death to your kind, xeno." you whisper, as you drive the gladius through its throat. The Nob's eyes bulge before gaining the lifeless glaze you have learned to know.

As you stand, you see that the Sergeant and Filos have dealt with their threats in equally successful manner.

Informing them that you suspect the Orks may be wielding flamers, the Sergeant orders that you try to stay out of flamer range, and target the shoddy flamethrowing equipment first when possible.

You have nearly ten minutes before the Ultramarines make a full-scale assault towards the Waaagh, on the other side of the hill.

Pausing, the Sergeant brings you and Filos aside, handing you four melta charges, and several frags to Filos.

"Two paths to the top of the hill. North face has heavy presence...would take too long to fight our way through. We're ascending the east face, where Ork defenses seem lacking. Early intelligence suggested a Mekboy running things on the hill, so beware." The Sergeant pauses to upload the relevant data to Filos' auspex.

"Lathemenos, you'll have to stick with Filos, lacking a functional auspex. Roll out."

Inching forwards through some underbrush, and moving when you hear the thunder of explosions in the distance, you pull close enough for a decent shot with your pistol.

You raise it and fire, catching the Ork in the shoulder, blowing off his right arm. The Ork has enough time to shout for a fraction of a second before you scatter his brains among the leaves.

Other Orks probably heard the noise and are moving in to your location. Something inside you tells you to flank them now and kill them from the hilltop later. You're inclined to agree with your gut.

Pulling Filos aside, and whispering your plan, he disagrees.

    (HELL YEAH.)

You look Filos dead in the eye lense and say,

"Give me those frags." He hands them over with no argument.

"Follow me, and cover me with that bolter."

You sprint left though the trees as Filos follows, dodging the Ork patrols and ascending steadily through the brush. You find a few empty, hastily constructed guard towers and slap a few timed frags down; the Orks will be back in time to receive a fragmentation surprise.

You reach the hilltop to see five looted Imperial Earthshakers idling and coughing up black smoke. Gretchins scurry in between the vehicle carrying toolboxes, and you see the Mekboy screaming at them from his perch on the nearest Earthshaker. Too easy, you think.

Turning, you see your frags go off and hear the screaming of Orks dead and dying, as well as more distant explosions that must be the Sergeant's work.

    "Filos, cover the ascent."

You run into the artillery camp like a bat out of hell, throwing your remaining grenades and firing your bolt pistol accurately, killing most of the Gretchin and the Ork guards. You prep the melta charges, and slap two on Earthshakers as you tear into the camp like a force of nature.

The Mekboy looks up and a forcefield springs around him.

Having closed the distance, you smash the shield with the metal sheet, clanging loudly, until it flickers for a moment, but it's a moment you need. You reach around the Ork and slap your last melta directly onto his chest.

The moment is almost comedic as the Mek looks down to realize his death is imminent.

Suddenly, the field springs back to life, eating your right arm's protective sheath of armor. You pull it back, hissing, and give the boy one last homerun swing, rolling him back to rest against yet another piece of wreckage.

Unfortunately, that's only about ten feet away.

With something akin to fear in your eyes, you turn to run just as the melta vaporizes the boy, throwing you against the barrel of the fourth Earthshaker, leaving a sizable dent and cracking your already damaged armor.

You stand amongst a bloody crater, half-dead, with three destroyed artillery pieces out of five. Not bad, considering you were already almost killed today.

Prior to today's infiltration, you studied the Sharks combat strategem religiously, listened to thousands of hours of recorded and stolen vox documents, and received plastic surgery to mirror the facial structure and even scars of battles past, of Space Shark Brother Lathemenos, Fourth Company.

For all intents and purposes, you are Lathemenos. Even better, none of the Sharks stationed here on Agethik knew Lathemenos personally before you assumed his identity.

Entering the smallish compound, and brushing aside countless servitors, you enter the squat building in the center of the lot, where Captain Sylfi Archigos commands the small Space Sharks contribution to this war.

"Well?" He turns from a dataslate display, fully armored, and you notice, with still smoking shrapnel damage to his breastplate.

You explain your situation to him, and he expresses his sorrow at the loss of his brothers. You do not have to fake your sorrow; you lost brothers today too.

He tells you to expect to be integrated into another Ultramarine squad tomorrow; the other Sharks are still in the field. Detail will be uploaded to your auspex when you suit up tomorrow, and orders you spend the rest of the day and night sleeping or in comtemplative meditation.

The bolterfire. It was accurate, far too accurate for Orks. And the krak missile that nearly killed you? It might have been a lucky shot...but it also might have fired by the trained hands of an Astarte.

The ambush was orchestrated by Alpha Legion, you have little doubt. Alpha Legion who knew of your squad's efforts, and who will no doubt try to kill you again, on or off the battlefield.

As the sun rises, you mentally recite your prayers to the Emperor, and devotionals to Alpharius' wisdom and skill, and then rise.

You are outfitted at the Sharks' quartermaster as you receive the mission data as promised; you and a large squad of Ultramarines are to be deployed on the right flank of the Waagh, and attempt to draw out Ork leadership, and possibly lure the Warboss out into the open.

You are picked up with the Ultramarine squad and deposited on that flank via Thunderhawk within the hour.

On the ride, you are introduced to your squadmates: Sergeant Manitorus, the heavy weapons group consisting of Gregor, Markos, and Fortusio, and three more battlebrothers with standard weaponry, Restorn, Wachus, and Martullo.

You get the impression they do not trust you.

Finally, you're on site, and Manitorus tells you to stick with the regular battle brothers, before informing you that the Orks are relocating south and that the marines aim to catch them unawares.

    You roll out.

You mentally curse the Ultramarines as incompetent fools as they consult and argue amongst themselves about the intelligence they received.

They noticeably exclude you from the discussion, but you could hardly care.

One of the Heavy Weapons Team, Fortusio, walks with almost unnoticeable limp, and one that you think you recognize. You wouldn't have noticed, but your paranoia has reached new heights with the knowledge that other Alpha Legion are attempting to kill you.

You once met an Alpha Legionnaire with the same exact limp, almost thirty years ago, but nothing else seems familiar. You keep an eye on him.

Finally, your squad locates the Ork convoy. It's heading deep through the forest, and Manitorus sets up a Codex-approved ambush, complete with heavy weapons on the high ground and melta charges pre-set. You'd mock his childish sense of strategy if you were the mocking type.

You settle in, behind a small shrub, with the rest of the squad, on the north side of the convoy's path. The Heavy Weapons team is set on high ground to the south, and the melta charges are directly in the middle of your field of vision. You check your bolter and chainsword one last time as the noisy engines of the Orks approach.

Anything you'd like to say to the Ultramarines before we begin?

To Manitorus' credit, the ambush is timed flawlessly. Wartrukks and Killa Kans marching alongside huge mobs of Orks are shredded by timed melta blasts, and the thudding of the heavy bolter team opens up on the milling Ork crowd. You and your battle brothers stand valiantly and fire relentlessly into the mob of Orks, but kill relatively few of them. In desperation, you begin throwing grenades, but a few clever Orks manage to catch them and throw them aside in the split second of safety they have. Almost thirty Orks are descending on your location, while a few Nobs charge behind, driving them on.

In unison, the Ultramarines holster their bolters and draw their chainswords, meeting the Orks head on, and slaying a few immediately.

Meanwhile, you hear a desperate vox from the heavy weapons team on the far side of the path, many more Orks than anticipated have emptied from the wrecked vehicles and joined the mob headed their way. Manitorus orders them to fall back immediately as he provides covering fire and a distraction, but you have no idea how much success they're having.

The Orks in front of you surge forwards with awful grins and shouts of joy; how do you respond? Bring out the chainsword or continue bolter firing into the crowd?

Fortusio is missing a leg, and Markov clings to life by a thread, but seems stable. Manitorus himself is missing his right hand and holds his bolt pistol awkwardly in his left hand, while the other Ultramarines cradle broken legs and arms of their own.

"It seems you still have all your pieces, Shark." Manitorus drily observes.

"We have achieved our duty here today, but even better, we managed to pick up the Warboss on these inferior Ork vox units," he exclaims, pointing to an ugly hissing device that Fortusio holds.

"We know their future armor movements, the Warboss' location and even better, know that there's already divisions in his Waagh! A single airstrike could destabilize any semblance of structure in the greenskin army."

You can almost hear Manitorus grin as he proclaims that the war could be over two days from now.

You grin as well. That is far sooner than you could have hoped for a victory.

    Timeskip to Space Sharks basecamp?

Time skip sounds perfect. Anything significant that happens hopefully should be reported.

You and your squad are extracted from the forest, without much further trouble, as you hear more reports of success, with the exception of a Minotaurs killteam officially listed as KIA.

You make your way back to the Shark's compound, but it isn't long before you receive a personal vox from Archigos, requesting your presence.

When you meet him, Archigos is more relaxed.

"Ah, I see you return yet again, Lathemenos!" He gives you a warrior's handshake and explains that the Ultramarines Sergeant Manitorus, has written a grudgingly positive report concerning your actions on the battlefield, and has specifically requested your participation in another Ultramarine action with some of his superiors.

"This is how you get recommended for the Deathwatch, brother!" Archigos seems genuinely happy with you, and you return a grin.

"Where will I be deployed? And with who?"

"According to the report I received, you'll be acting as part of Mikael Fabian's retinue on the battlefield, the Captain of the Third Company."

Archigos speaks on a bit further, and you nod and agree when appropriate, before walking back to your quarters.

Fabian. The man you are supposed to protect. No coincidence you've somehow been assigned to his retinue, especially if the Waagh will be broken tomorrow.

No, Fabian is supposed to die on the field tomorrow, and you'll have to save him.

Roll a d10 for the night, and even more obligatory DM foreshadowing horseshit.

I sort of got the impression all our like-minded Alpha Legionnaires were killed. Wonder if we still have allies high up, then.

Nothing shall stand in my away for sucess and serve god emperor. He is only one and who can guide us in this darkness.

(Ah, but that's the nature of the Hydra Cult, many heads and methods and stuff. Also, combining these because I liked the fluffiness of the second one.)

You meditate deeply all night, on your service and dedication of the Emperor. You analyze the day's happenings and try to make sense of where exactly you fit.

Your team was killed by other Alpha Legionnaires, and you survived by chance. You were trying to expedite the Ultramarines victory, and you have done so, but the intelligence delivered to Manitorus was poor.

Tomorrow, you will attempt to save Fabian's life from a traitor.

    There will not be failure.
