So, anyone wish to donate ideas to an AdEva GM.
    Setting is in Russia, 1960s.

Just need ways to mentally fuck up the PCs and any other plot ideas wishing to be donated.

Things I've picked up before was Nuclear Minefield made up of Poland.

    Tank Eva's.
Low-grade, mass-produce ballistic-based Evas not unlike that Thompson art there. Have the pilots know that those are what is behind them, should they screw up, and the tank-Eva's don't discriminate targets.

Constant pressure from the Political Office to use the EVA's on America.
Especially when they discover that an AT field can resist a nuclear weapon. Oh lordy are things going to get hilarious when the US discovers that.

Expect America to start developing Jet Alones and TRidenT DAMN quickly as a deterrent.

Just to check, the Angels ARE also attacking right?

So, to mess up the party expect lots of political pressure, assassinations, spying from the US, bribery and threats to the parties family if they don't do as they're told.
At least one coup de tat by Hawkish factions of the Government on the Organisation will probably happen as well. How this would play out would be up to you.

At some point an NPC should just get taken in the night by KGB never to return.
Hell, pull it with a PC if you think you can get away with it.

For any more ideas, read 1984 and Animal Farm.

Don't even attempt to hide that they are most likely mal-formed rejected Eva units. All they need is a working arm to hold a gun, an eye to aim, and enough of a body to hold them up to the machinery that makes them move. Have them retching and bleeding, with teams of handlers just there to make sure the bullets all go one-way. Completely disposable, and he pilots need to know that they will always be between those bullets and the angels, should anything fail, or they go a little too berserk.
Rifle through Keith Thompson's other art. That should be our bible for Russian designs on all equipment, player Eva's included. Play up the fact that the angels are only slightly worse then what the country is doing itself.

The Evas constantly blare propaganda, both externally and directed at the pilots. When berserking the propaganda becomes distorted until it resembles masses of voices yelling furiously with sped-up Soviet themes playing in the background. The internal propaganda speakers are active during tests and such, just with the volume set at a lower level.

The setting is already that most more powerful countries have Eva, besides Japan as WWII never stopped between them and America in the setting. Also is pretty Cold War style between America and Rus-- Soviet Union. I just noticed my error there now.

Yes there are Angels, and one of the PCs is an American spy already.

Have the pilots aware that they are expendable, perhaps have players be ready to be executed for failure by the OD. Eva destroyed taking out an angel? Too bad. They cost money, you cost far less. *blam* OD should be a commissar, always playing with a loaded handgun when talking to the players, ready for any twitch.
Have Back-up pilots of the stitched-flesh horrors too. They come from Lilith (if that is your plot) But get machined up from an early age to be utterly commendable. Think Rei, only more servitor-esque.

That way, no matter how many children get blammed, there will always be a willing monster ready to by loaded up into a plug to fight. Think of it as a deus ex machina should the party wipe, instead of just nuking the angel, you have these. Make it really sting if the players fail, knowing that these brainless lumps of flesh succeeded when they failed, and their next kids have to fill in, possibly having to move into the previous pilots rooms, posters still on the wall, bed still warm.

If you have any of the pilots with the cloned background, have them know that the flesh golems are his siblings. Not where they are coming from, but know that they come from the same place, and the player could at any time become one of them if they mouth off. If there are other Eva's in other countries, make sure they are the polar opposites, bright and shiny and sleek, opposed to the hideous and metal-plated player Evas, so they know they are in something sick, then have the foes take psyche damage when faced with the horrors.

The player's rooms should have windows, so that at all times their Eva is staring at them with the hideous eyes, weeping blood. The OD says it is to help link the pilots, when the Eva's are actually linked up to provide security footage.
For mind fucks, all players have a handler, A military thug who's sole job is to make sure the kid eats at meal time, exercises at work-out time, and says exactly what is on their cue cards when talking to the public. Perhaps the players can pick their handler's disorders. Maybe once hits harder then he should, maybe one won't let the kid sleep, or calls him over-weight, maybe one is a pedophile, and watches the pilot do everything.

In this case, the OD either needs to be a DMPC, or else be in on the DM's work. have the OD always take the word of the handler over the pilot. If the pilot brings inarguable proof of the abuse to the OD's attention, have the handler blammed in front of the kids eyes right there, then automatically assign a new one with a new set of problems. The handler should never, ever, become a sympathetic character.
Improtant caveat, if the handler are a pedophile, never any hands-on. Ever. Too much player fuckery there. But have them watch the pilot when they sleep, take away all the inner door in their room, have clear shower curtains, that kind of thing, but never any actual physical stuff. Mental only.

Have the handler be responsible for the pilot's synch scores.
Imagine the look on player's faces. If their scores drops, the handler will *make* them bring it up. Possibly causing all kinds of other mental issues along the way. At some point have other, non-clone pilots report to the science lab as the OD attempts to start having clones of them made, perhaps the normal genetic stock is deteriorating. Possible trouble comes about between players as the new template blames the old for putting him or her through it. have pilots have to go through propaganda classes and phobia tests, the goal being to make them fear nothing. If synch drops, the handler's job is to bring it back up. Make everything a catch-22.

All pilots have a stun-gun-esque device implanted in the somewhere. If they try to sneak around, the OD can hit a button and drop them in agony where they stand. Maybe he does it anyway, to keep them on their toes. Players should have a lot of free time, but be too scared to use it much. Encourage relationships between pilots, then find ways to have the OD interfere with them. Two budding lovers? Fine, have them share a study class for a week or so, then have one start taking mandatory extra work-out sessions because the OD thinks they might be getting chubby.

Apply some good old Stalin-era revisionism. Have an NPC piss off superiors and disappear. Then start removing him/her from everything, from rosters to photographs and so on.

Pretty much, make that person no longer exist. Even when players ask what happened, be all like "who? What?"

Bonus fun if that NPC wasn't the cleaning lady but actually bridge staff or somebody they knew well.

    --------------
Apply upgrades and experiments to the Eva without pilot knowledge or consent. Works best if they don't inspect or care for their Evas personally or all that closely.

When they go into combat, tell them that implant they had before isn't there any longer. Maybe its been replaced by something else. Maybe not. The techs are testing something here with their Eva. Not their place to question or disrupt the experiment.

Wonderful concept, actually. Constant tinkering with the Eva's so the pilots are never really comfortable. Maybe they have nightmares from the residual link to the Eva of having limbs removed. Maybe one of the units whispers to the pilot whenever they are in it, begging them to kill it, to end it's pain. Maybe the remains of a former pilot keep appearing when the LCL is drained, even though the body was more then recovered by now, duplicate maimed pieces of bodies and plugsuit keep forming from the fluid. If one of the pilots has a neo-spartan background, have them be part of a small army of smiliar child-soldiers. Have them have to spend time back on the front lines with their units, whil the other pilots can only watch the propaganda-laden news and pray that their fellow pilot comes back in one piece.
Have mandatory uniforms for the pilots to wear when going to classes or the like. Give them no ability to blend in and hide what they are. If they go to a school with normal children, play up the mental issues they have. Talk to pilots about really playing out their issues when RPing their characters. Maybe the cloned one has an overwhelming desire to avoid all injury at all cost for self-preservation. Maybe the Neo-spartan is terrified of touching anyone for fear of hurting them.

    Secret orders for everyone!

Works best if the PCs have different (gov't/military?) backgrounds or allegiances. They've all got some benefactor/handler who wants one thing or another from time to time.

-Maybe they want pictures of an Eva, or a facility.
-Or to know what was said in a conversation between two other people.
-If you could be a dear and make sure the radio tower at <Location> is toppled, you'd be doing your country proud. (Said right before an Eva deployment).
-When your Eva is taken to <Location>, do not take it anywhere near <Building/Landmark>. Do not let it come to harm.

And so on. When they do these things, they get rewarded. Pretty nicely, too. And of course, they aren't supposed to tell anybody else.

Pilots battle an Angel, only to have no difficulty ripping it apart. They later find out that it was another country's Eva, but being so different in appearance from their own, they could not tell. This sparks of a longer- running fight wit other countries, though the pilots are never told which is an angel and which is an Eva.

Have the Russian NERV base in the middle of Siberia or the Russian steppe. Make it very clear to the pilots that even if they run, they're not going to get far. Also, the EVAs are purposely designed so they can't deal with cold weather without certain refits, that way if a pilot tries to escape in his eva, he and his eva will enjoy the wonders of hypothermia before he either dies or is forced to beg his "benefactors" for help.

Also, the NERV base is a just a short train ride away from several gulags. After every mission, particularly if the evas have taken heavy damage, trains with cars full of prisoners roll in, but leave empty.

Also, pretty much the entire Science and Medical teams are made up of Nazi scientists who got picked up by the Russians postwar. They're skills are extremely valuable to NERV, so they're essentially given carte blanche on the whole project. They're not afraid to admit that they're Nazis, and even boast about their past works in front of the pilots.

Usually, during the night or even in the middle of the day, the pilots will find themselves snatched away and taken to the lab for "tests". On the way they should hints and brief glimpses of the other experiments the Nazi scientists are working on.

My bad, didn't think about that. Or S2 organs.

    Here's something:

A part of Pilot training is to show what happens when you try to escape in an EVA. At the training facility there is always somebody who tries to run (sometimes its not even staged). They then demonstrate the explosives underneath the pilot's seat in the plug. Clean and simple (for the EVA at least. The plug can be reused after the innards are replaced).

Every now and then, an enterprising pilot disables the plug-bomb. Or the EVA starts to run amok after the pilot is salsa-fied. That's when they show off the much larger explosives at the base of the EVA's skull and bottom vertebrae.

Other years, they don't use a plug bomb or a decap-blast. Sometimes there's just explosives that amputate the EVA's limbs and leave it twitching, ready to be recovered. Or a hidden cyanide injector in the plugsuit. Or the field around the base hides an electric "carpet" strong enough to fry the entry plug's contents yet keep the EVA alive. Or a miniature, leaking barrel of nuclear waste, slowly poisoning the EVA and pilot; long after the EVA dies and the pilot runs from the corpse, his guts will melt and he'll shit blood.

The thing is, every Pilot who wasn't trained at the same place and time as another (training usually done in large batches) is convinced there's a different anti-runaway measure in place.

The truth? Some of these are used typically the plug and skull bombs. But mostly the demonstrations serve two purposes: they teach Pilots not to run and let the Military test new anti-EVA weapons.

I'd shy away from S2 organs, since they have a habit of starting the Eva version of the Rapture or creating pocket dimensions at random.

This is set in the 60s in glorious USSR, no sissy extension cables allowed. Have them running on huge nuclear reactors that are humps on the back.

"Capitalists shall tremble before my 20 story atomic superman!"

And have the Americans making the same claims about their Robot counterparts.

Have the Soviets planning to use the Evas in a battle field roll where they can excel. Use them as mobile shield generators for armored spearheads. This is a logical counter measure to the small(5-50kt) tactical nukes that had been deployed in Europe at the time.

And just as you said, nukes can hurt them, and this would be a nuke happy setting. Compared to N2 weapons, which have a yield of 30Kt max given what is shown, even a one Megaton nuke will penetrate any angel's shield every time.

And remember that any thermonuclear weapon can be scaled up indefinitely so long as you have the necessary lithium, deuterium, and tritium. An arbitrary number of fusion stages can be added to the fission primer. And we know that at least 30 stages could be initiated using modern technology. Also remember that the efficiency of the bombs actually increases as the yield and number of stages does. This could result in a battleship sized nuke with a yield greater than 900 Teratons, twelve times more than all the energy released by the bolide that killed the dinosaurs. And with a directional warhead 60% of the energy can be directed into a cone with an angle of 40 degrees. And this weapon can be launched into orbit using nuclear pulse propulsion then deorbited on any target, or used against a space based target albeit with less efficiency since there is no atmosphere to be excited by the gamma rays released and carry a blast wave. It could also be used as a mine that would not only smash the Angels shield and rip it to sub meter sized pieces but also launch those pieces into space with over 100,000g of acceleration, pulping anything that remains.

Have an Angel realize that the power of SOVIET SUPER SCIENCE outstrips its own. Have it steal or construct one of these doomsday devices one its own.

I'd probably go with "AT fields kinda get fucked up operating outside of Earth's biopshere" myself. Along with "If you try hard enough in low space/upper atmosphere, you can totally use those fucked up AT fields to create a Tang-blast."

The Angels haven't figured that one out yet...

Gotta do something with all those failed EVA pilots, right?

Why not combine the two? You have brains fused together and hooked to a computer interface. They know EVAs, they know AT fields, they know Angels. Freed of their bodies and pumped full all kinds of crazy drugs, they become remote viewing, hypercognitive *things*.

Who are also kinda crazy. And suffer burnout frequently. Which means replacing parts.

Anyways, the PCs should get to know the bridge crew, or at least recognize them on sight. They're a tired, haggard crowd. Maybe just as much as the Pilots.

When a new crewmember arrives, they're fresh and clean and alive. Not for long, after time spent around the "Magi." If a PC ever goes near the Magi (which they shouldn't. That knowledge is classified, Pilot. you do not belong in this wing. Go back.), their AT field and ego barrier is assaulted by the mass of minds.

How about if the Liberty Prime units are also "piloted".

Being slightly nicer and hoping for a propaganda boost the Americans take the brains of severely retarded and crippled children and put them in robots to give them a new life after brain rewiring. In reality though most of these children are not retarded, just unable to communicate or not disabled at all. The real robots that do have retarded brains are just for testing and prototyping of new mechanical bodies. Even the human sized ones are atomic powered Iron Man like weapons of war. The largest are 40 story tall Liberty Prime rip offs.

And why children? Neurologic plasticity, the brains of children can more easily recover from damage done during surgery and adapt to control the robotic body in about 4 years. Of course the children get the finest "education" from the government to make them loyal and productive members of American society, and a hard wired vacuum computer constantly intruces thoughts that burning FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY CAN ONLY BE PRESERVED BY ELIMINATING THE COMMUNIST THREAT AMERICA FUCK YEAH!

Finland only has one Eva, but it is a fine one. The White Death, the Protector, is built for stealth, for steadiness, for accuracy. It is a sniper. You would never think that something so big could move so quickly, silently, blending into falling snow like a breath, gone before it is noticed. It has many eyes, and many cameras. Its arms are long. Its legs are heavily braced, concealing outriggers that help to keep it motionless when in combat. It carries a positron weapon of unprecedented range and power, capable of piercing a comparable Eva's AT Field from miles and miles away.

The new invasion of Europe cannot proceed with this machine still in operation. It must be destroyed, but you will have to find it first.

Soviet high command is convinced this is some sort of technological invention on their part, and the pc's have to attempt to recover the finn eva as intact as possible.
Soviet high command doesn't know that the ability is purely a manifestation of the finnish eva pilot's will due to some mutation or somesuch, and the pc's WILL be punished if they don't produce this wonderful cloaking device

India and China are both mass-producing Evas or Eva-like machines. Their excess population gives them plenty of material. Their large production capacity gives them the means. Evas are cyborgs, after all. Biological creatures, constrained by machines. Why grow, when you can mold? The poor and the dead have become useful, in this new age. The crematoriums and funeral parlors will be emptied, the half-way houses, the orphanages, the prisons and the tenements cleared out. Economic rebirth, the firstfruits of Communism and Capitalism both. That is why the streets, once so full of the downtrodden and forgotten, now blister with clean steel and shining glass, with no wandering vagrants to mar them. Russia, too, with its scattered Siberian camps and concealed political prisons, has its fair share of components.

And so the gods will walk. Their woven flesh, human and divine, filled with the fragments of screaming souls. Born from a science poorly-understood, and the mystic truths unfolding from the mother of man. It is said, in this war, that there is no good, only degrees of evil. If you ask the Americans, with their synthetic cells, their Buzz Aldrin and Coca-Cola, the Right go with God, and Democracy is the highest pursuit that can be known by man. But if you speak to the lost and the damned, who form the limbs and the hearts of the demons who fight Angels, what will you say?

Remember MKULTRA, the CIA's pet mind-control project. Hell, remember everything the CIA has done. Remember all that research, all the experiments taken from Unit 731. And that's only what we've been allowed to know about. So much has either remained classified or was purged from the records. If anything, the United States has been as bad or worse than everyone else, at least at certain levels.

So it wouldn't surprise me if America's EVA program was just as horrifying and creepy as the USSR's, just in different ways. Pilots get everything they could ever want. Large televisions with every channel ever (censored, of course, and never live). An unending supply of candy and soda, not to mention the comic books. Action figures, sports equipment, American flags on every conceivable surface. Patriotism so thick it's suffocating. The best therapy money can buy, of course, and an omnipresent cadre of men in black suits. As long as you profess a thorough hatred for the Reds, say your pledge every day and keep your uniform clean, they'll promise to let you see your parents. Just remember not to scratch the stitches on the back of your neck.

I mean, there's really nothing to worry about. The budget is essentially unlimited. Engineering standards are higher than NASA's. The best and the brightest are lined shoulder-to-shoulder, all breaking their backs to make the best war machines on the face of the Earth. The Saturn V put men on the Moon. The EVA will protect them on Earth.

Russian here, in fact the USSR was not very grimdark in the 60s, especially during Khruschev's rule. I'd recommend a more optimistic setting, with most people enthusiastic about any kind of new technology, even the more disturbing aspects of Eva production, nuclear power seen as the answer to everything, propaganda trumpeting about glorious Soviet science bringing communism ever closer to victory, research teams trying out radical new ideas. Nobody wants to look back; life might have been hard so far, but technocracy will solve all problems soon. Something appropriate to lighten the mood, like the pilots being ordered to write NERV wall newspapers, Evas being painted with slogans for the November 7th parade, or a well-meaning civillian official trying to enlist assistance for moving a mountain or digging a canal.
Feel free to add something different, though, such as espionage or political dissent, just don't make it all comissars and gulags; there's enough of that elsewhere.
I don't believe you people have read the Strugatsky brothers' earlier works; if you had, you'd know exactly what kind of atmosphere I have in mind.

It's more fun to play a fantastic setting if you think it could plausibly grow from the political environment and culture of the time. Take the "higher-up disappears, is retconned out of everything" bit. Yes, that's more of a purge-era thing, but it's believable; it happened.

While I certainly realize that the ideas I postulated last night are anything but truly historically accurate, the point of the setting is not to maintain accuracy. In that regard, you would really end up with very little being different from the original series. The point of it all is to play up the propaganda version of what the communist red was like, in order to achieve a far more entertaining setting to the delight (more more likely, horror) of the players and the DM involved.

First of all, continueing the theme, the setting needs to be as distinctly anti-nuclear weapon as possible. Nerv would not be allowed to deploy nuclear weapons against the Angels, because the use of said weapons would of course trigger a response from the United states in a nuclear war. for all the posturing, no weapons can be used. Which means they have to come up with new ideas.

about the mystery pregnancy horrible anon suggested earlier. seems to me theres lots of possibilities with that one.
e.g. can have the aborted fetus survive and then grow in a lab into a grotesque hybrid, looking half like the pilot and half like the eva, then have it follow the parent around as an experiment, could have it go nuts and shot full of holes bleeding and spasming right in front of the pilot.
eg2. could have the fetus grow into an abomination which then escapes and attacks the pilots killing some of the parents friends, tearing chunks out of them, swallowing some, then when its being put down by either the remainder of the pilots+parent or security come up with a way for the parent to recognise the abomination as its aborted fetus grown big.

The first one designed, (and floolowing the pattern, Captcha say it is Andreae)
The basis is a quartet of massive legs, used to stabilize the system and absorb recoil from the weapons. Above that is a turntable, mounted on it is the armored torso of one of the earlier mentioned mass-produced Eva's. Torso only, as well as enough of a brain to maintain and manipulate an AT field, but nothing more. The weapon itself was once a cannon from the deck of a battleship, re-designed to allow for continuous fire. In it's current state, it is able to fire 60 rounds per minute of either High-explosive, or White Phosphorus shells. The Eva is mounted with four of these auto-cannon, with a simple computer-assisted aiming system. By providing shocks to the Eva's exposed brain, the operators can extend the AT field out in front, providing a firing cone for the hail of shots to connect with the Angel. (Or player Eva.)

Second design, the crawler. (Untesrat. Interesting name Captcha). This unit is mounted on train cars, the upper torso, head, and part of one arm of an Eva, bolted down, with part of the face removed. Four eyes, attached to extended optic nerves, run from the face up a support frame, giving the body a complete 360 degree field of view. The various cars of the train can be changed out, while the AT field of the Eva provides a protective umbrella for anything aboard. Used for mass-transit, cargo, or military movement of highly dangerous or Angel-desired objects, pilots included.

Third design, nothing good from captcha here. The grab trap. nearly-complete Eva, six arms grafted around a torso, with the head mounted inside the chest cavity. Deployed in a location deemed most likely for the Angel to approach from, it's designed to grab and hold anything that comes over it, player included, if you feel like screwing them that way.

A good third of the ideas are of the stupid IN SOVIET RUSSIA variety. The body horror/evil organization horror really need not be criticized, since it's a trope of Eva and most governments have many, many organizations that are, distinct from the government itself, utterly evil or at least amoral. The CIA serves as an excellent example, but they were also INEPT and evil during the Cold War.

I could easily see a paranoid Soviet intelligence/research agency assigning each of its pilots with a handler whose resume probably includes government-sanctioned murder.

I know the eva limitation stuff but if we go with the nuclear back pack idea then the defecting pilot/scientist idea is back on the table.

play up the warsaw angle more

make them go on tours of warsaw nations, do a tour in eastern germany. Have them go on a good will train stop tour around Russia. During the tour, Angels keep showing up a few days later at the stops they make, almost as if they are following them

Light hearted missions where they must help out with farming or mining with their evas

And on the subject of evas while fucked up evas can be cool, make sure that during any PR event, they are in fancy cover up paneling. This may necessitate remaking some scenes of battle for the papers, or cause a problem when there is an angel attack during a PR journey.

Remind the players of what an important symbol they are. They don't keep up a good face in public because its required, but because they look in the faces of their classmates and the only thing keeping them from complete terror is the knowledge that fellow Russians can keep them safe.

    also, send them to Afghanistan.

taking inspiration from horrible anon, so much money and development have gone into the EVA that they need to use re purposed items from other military branches. Artillery guns, bomb grenades.

Sputnik as an angel detection system, also, to explore the trident.

The white sphere is in the arctic or antarctic? Move it to the arctic circle if its not so it can become an appropriate battleground.

Also while I like the grimdark and horror in this thread, 60s Russia was, at least to people there at the time, optimistic.

It's all about contrast. You can have the handlers, and people disappearing, and horrible experiments, and classified everything, but the Evas are painted to be magnificent wonders of soviet science, the pilots are heroes (think Yuri Gagarin).

Everyone but those directly involved in the project believe that the Evas will solve all problems and lead the USSR down a glorious road.

This superficial brightness only makes the grimdark more grimdark.

As a minor point, I recommend renaming the Evas to something non-religious. Religion was something people were put into camps for. (As another note: this gives you a reason for the Evas to have religious connotations if people's bodies are used to manufacture them. The memories of religion and faith and political opinion are literally what the Evas are made of.)

guys, it's perfectly possible to blend both horrible dark KGB soviet grimdark and glorious communist dream within this setting.

For all the shit going down with the EVA project, the masses still live in what closely resembles the actual times of the 60's. Their only exposure to the EVA's is through PR stunts, which range from parades/public speeches to civil engineering jobs (dam building, railway laying, ship rescue, etc etc)

However, the EVA pilots/personnel are locked away within the compound, and when their EVA's go out for PR stunts, the suits are actually remote controlled. When they give speeches, the internal mics are on but the external speakers only give a previously written/approved speech.

I mean, this ideas don't have to be mutually exclusive by any means. In fact, I think it even enhances the terror of the situation by making the EVA pilots even more helpless. Even when they have their "milk run" missions of grand-standing and parade speaking, they are kept safely isolated from the working class, locked within their own EVA units without any control, not even able to speak, but still doing a glorious service to the motherland.

Of course, this makes all the praise that their superiors heap upon them ring flat and hollow, because they aren't actually doing anything. This doesn't mean they are not praised, of course.
In fact, these PR runs may be the only positive reinforcement that the pilots receive, and bring temporary vacations (supervised, and only within approved locations and times, of course)
