    151 KB Omnipotence Quest IX Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 04/06/11(Wed)18:30 No.14498610
Two days have passed since the assassination attempt and your foray into the Kamada headquarters. Despite earnest investigation the entire time, however, your group of heroes is no closer to finding who marked them for death. At present both Lann and Liss have elected to remain at the new Inn. Having purchased every room in the place for a month they see no reason to skimp on the traps, and are even now still fortifying the residence. Tissa has been playing a more active role, rooting out no less than three assassin organizations in the city in the brief period. None of them, alas, connected in any way with the Kamada. Dejected, she has stopped on the way back to the inn to buy some apples for the twins. Last night it was revealed they had never tasted them, and it seems she wishes to remedy that. The market bustles about her, thronged with people buying and selling all manner of goods or citizens fighting through the press to buy food for dinner after a long day of work.

Bartering the ridiculous price of fresh fruit down, it seems the paladin (nor anyone else for that matter) notices when a powerful anti-magic aura permeates the location. Admirably subtle, you muse that it might not even be possible for a normal mortal to notice without attempting to activate an item.

Aw shit, some secularity juice done been activated.
I suggest any action we take in this area during the period of this effect be taken with extreme care.
Any obvious magical or divine effects during this will alert the Kamada in a big way, and our heroes are no match against them without our obvious intervention.

And having our heroes with in such a manner would be boring.

    I agree and disagre.

Doing anything would indeed warn them and that would be "bad" becouse we want to stay hidden.

But think for a second of the expressions on their faces? imagen themi running around like headless hens in confusion, anger and fear?

I say that if we have to save them, just save them for death (if they mess up and get maimed its their own foult) and we do it with style to scare the hell out of the Kamada!

You fool! You can't just skip from Act One to The Grand Finale. We have to let this shit build up, first.
Scaring them all with a vulgar display of power is the work of poor dilettantes. We need to let the Kamada slowly, very slowly, piece the pieces together. The most beautiful moment is when the leaders are in conclave and they finally begin to realize what their up against.

Imagine the expressions on their faces _then_!

The armor appearing will seem to violate the properties of their anti-magic field, which will tip them off to the fact that her artifact is of the ridiculously powerful variety. It will, however, leave her utterly clueless, since she won't even realize that anything is wrong.

I would propose that we have the armor activate in response to the anti-magic field, and remain active as long as it remains; that would still be suspicious, but it could be interpreted as a reactive defense to sensing an attempt at suppressing its power, rather than being able to laugh off their precious suppression techniques. It would also let Tissa know that something is wrong.

The Kamada were able to guess there was divine intervention just from the two ropes that broke last time. They will recognize it if we do it again, and they will recognize that we can pierce their secularity juju.

    The Kamada will think:
a.) Holy shit, something with power beyond our kin is fucking around.
b.) These three dudes most be really fucking important if someone like us taking interest in them.

Afterward, the Kamada will likely drop everything to monitor our three heroes in hopes of learning something of us. This will effectively neuter the Kamada, as they will spend the bulk of their resources on our three people instead of pursuing their scheming schemes. This makes them much less of a threat, and they'll cease to be entertaining villain material for us to pit our heroes against.

For the love of us, don't give us away. You'll ruin the fun!
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 04/06/11(Wed)19:14 No.14499092
Best to let Tissa handle this, you muse. Besides, you would like to see just how good these vaunted journeymen are. Settling into a broad overview you wait. And wait. And wait. Eventually Tissa negotiates the salesman down to a reasonable price and, after purchasing a dozen apples, turns back to the crowd. After a few seconds standing and waiting she attempts to move in but collides with a hooded man in grey robes. “Ow!” she exclaims, rubbing her left wrist, but the man bows and apologizes and with a smile she returns the gesture, “No, it was my fault. Loris smile upon you, friend.”

With that she walks off in the direction of the inn, but less than a minute later begins to stagger and sway, eventually stopping to brace herself on the frame of a stall. Looking closer, you note she is breathing heavily and has begun sweating. “Wh- What is... oh no...” with that she sinks down to one knee, her eyes losing focus, and raises her hand to an amulet engraved with the symbol of Loris. Her eyes widen, however, as whatever she was expecting to happen fails to activate. As she finally sinks down to a sitting position leaning against the stall you note that her left wrist has a small drop of blood on it... as if from a needle prick. “Lo-ris. Grant. Me strength.” she whispers, head leaning against the wooden planks and eyes closing as the swirl of humanity whirls around her, uncaring and oblivious.

This seems like the best course of action. It wouldn't lower the Kamada's suspicion any, but it wouldn't give us away.

Another thought: we should make a point to learn why the magic mafia wants to expend such resources to kill our heroes in the first place. Did Linn inadvertently insult a Grand Master's mother?

Can we stop time? Let's do that if we can so Tissa doesn't die before we can figure out what's poisoned her. Just hit the pause button for a moment.

Now, while time is stopped, we should figure out what's she's been poisoned with.

Things we may need to know include the name of the poison, what it does, its market price, how common it's usage is--both within the Kamada and otherwise, what it's made from and how, and, of course, in what ways can Tissa be remedied.

Yeah, but if the poison is highly lethal (which it undoubtedly is) then her surviving would be quite suspicious. Not that we shouldn't totally do that.

However, if there's a more mundane antidote we might arrange to have the assassins "discover" it at the scene to throw them off. Just some way to make her recovery seem less miraculous and more like Tissa was just prepared.

Slowly, you draw the poison from Tissa and simultaneously make her amulet radiate with a glowing golden light. Her condition improves immediately, her breathing easing and eyes opening, though it takes several minutes for her to stagger back to her feet. She immediately activates her bracer and draws her blade, causing shrieks and prayers to sound out from the crowd around her, then sprints for the Inn. Unlike before, it appears people are more than willing to part and allow a blazing white running form brandishing a sword through.

Bursting into the inn, Tissa slams the door open and startles the twins awake from where they were cuddling on the great rug in front of the main room’s fireplace. “NO! WATCH OUT FOR THE--” Liss begins, but is cut off as an enormous shockwave lifts Tissa and sends her slamming through the stone wall of a vacant smithery across the street. The twins quickly rush out after her and help her up, mercifully undamaged from the incident. “Now I /really/ want one of those.”, you hear Lann mutter under his breath as she herds them back inside and, after closing the door and rearming the traps, explains the situation.

The duo listens seriously and, after each taking an apple, goes to check the traps around the building and set even more of them. Tissa simply slumps down on the now-vacant rug and flops onto her back, letting free a soft moan of weariness at the half-mile sprint and sudden surprising entry..

Now with free time, you assess the poison the assassins injected her with. Testing it with your power, you find it to be similar to something you once used in the past called “Death’s Kiss.” Quite a vile poison, .it causes all muscles to stop functioning, including the heart and lungs. The victim suffocates for nearly two minutes and usually passes out before the heart stops working, and there is no known antidote. Excellent for assassins, even a tiny needle coated in it is lethal but it must be put directly into the bloodstream. Touching the poison, inhaling it, or even swallowing it will all only give the imbiber a mild case of the sweats. An expert’s weapon, precise and lethal to the target and they alone.

    Also quite expensive to make.

After a few minutes Tissa recovers and joins Liss, having the girl show her where the various traps are and where not to step so she can avoid them. While this is going on, you find Lann checking on some rune-inscribed metal plates he has placed throughout the house. Approvingly, you trace the pattern they form and deduce that they act as a complete scrying-ward against any observation, mortal or divine. You suppose that you shouldn’t be surprised at that, however, considering the potency of their other items and how long they had to scavenge the ruins of Mardana-Fel.

Changing perspectives, you are about to cast about to search for the assassins when you note a figure expertly concealed on top of the smithy opposite the inn. Cloaked in extremely powerful concealing magics, the man nonetheless remains motionless and silent. Once every ten seconds he peeks from under a magically enchanted blanket that blends in with its surroundings and through a small gap in the masonry he lies behind before ducking back down and telepathically communicating with... yes, two others. One is stalking around the back side of the inn, halfway between the second and third floors while the other you are able to pinpoint as a brown-robed man walking in circuits around the block. You note that after every pass he briefly ducks into an alley and recites a phrase, causing both his clothing and appearance to change dramatically.

    You intercept a few of the telepathic communications, just to see what is being conveyed. While the messages are heavily warded and spoken in code it is hardly beyond your abilities to crack them. The results are intriguing;
    >1: ”Targets still within dead zone. No new information available. Wards unable to be breached by current avaliable methods. Last information gave traps located on all northward and eastward facing windows and doors. Concussive trap possible on main door, along with others. Advise nonstandard entry.”
    >2: ”Nonstandard entry confirmed. Placing breaching tools. Request ground report.”
    >3: ”Ground level clear. No targets have exited the residence. No additional support on call outside residence. No underground escape routes. Moving into position to aid in breaching maneuver.”
    >2: ”Confirmed. Requesting diversion before breach and estimated time until optimal effect.”
    >1: “Diversion denied, stealth entry deemed more likely to succeed. Think back.”
    >2: “Confirmed. Requesting estimated optimal time for breach.”
    >1: “Estimate standard three hours before dining if targets keep to standard routine. Breach to be conducted at that time. Report status.”
    >2 & 3: “Confirmed. Holding in low-visibility stance for signal.”
    >1: “Affirmative. Maintain.”

Interested, you maneuver over to the rear of the inn and find a second assassin has joined the first between the second and third floors, both between windows so that they are unable to be directly observed. Between them you see a ring of small golden spikes with round balls on the protruding ends hammered between the stones of the inn’s wall, forming a roughly man-sized circular ring. As you watch the second assassin finishes maneuvering into position and, following a nod between the two, both he and his partner simply hang motionless with no apparent intent of moving.

This will simply not do. Lowering yourself to the breaching artifacts, you tweak them slightly. Ah-- ah... there. Now to sit back and wait. The three hours passes swiftly, with you observing the twins and Tissa within the inn. Their discussion starts on the subject of the traps, moves on to apples and other fruit, then to dinner. As they are sitting down to eat you notice telepathic traffic flickering between the assassins and shift your focus back to the rear of the inn just as the two intruders move into position. The one you marked at “number two” traces a symbol in the air over one of the metal pins and they begin exchanging power. Gradually the masonry begins turning translucent, then transparent, then it’s gone. Where it used to be a man-sized circular hole with wavering fluid edges has formed, the entire area inside the ring of spikes completely vanished.

That is, until your modifications take effect. With a loud shriek the bottommost spike flares white and explodes, followed shortly by the others as the reaction spreads. The hole, of course, instantly narrows shut and closes, the portal to the inside once more unyielding stone. Downstairs the twins and Tissa all jump up and charge upward while drawing their weapon while telepathic traffic flashes between the assassins.

    >1: “Report! What happened?!”
    >2: “Unknown, possibly some sort of ward. We’re withdrawing.”
    >1: “Understood, regroup at point six.”

With that the two assassins on the wall slam spikes into the stonework and hook rappelling lines to them, dropping thirty feet in under a second before landing softly on the ground and sprinting away. Activating invisibility cloaks and warding devices, they would be difficult for even a powerful diviner to find. Likewise, the leader quickly stashes his camoflauge blaket and rolls to one side, hooking onto an already-prepared line that drops him from the roof to ground level. Once he touches down he simply strolls away, walking with the slow but deliberate pace of one who is completely innocent of any wrongdoing yet has somewhere else to be.

Inside the inn the twins and Tissa are still on guard, now patrolling from top to bottom and checking both traps and wards.

I have to agree. If they were sending lower level minions, they'd be a great way to test our heroes but I think these journeymen are a little too much. I'm concerned on how they might escalate things at this point if we just let the assassins go away... Do the assassins have the symbol of their group on them in some manner? If so, perhaps we should just mind take one of them and kamikaze rush him into the inn so they have something to work with.

Once they've dealt with the assassins, we either need to find a way to get them to leave this place or make this organization stop chasing them. I guess we should follow the assassins for now and see if they're going to try again or return to their HQ. We need to take a more active role in shaping events so that we'll receive the entertainment we so righteously deserve. If we just keep observing and waiting nothing is going to happen.

There was a large stock pile of encrypted backlogged reports that we overlooked in our first scan of the fortress. Perhaps we should take a closer look at them, starting with the reports written after our heroes arrived on the island. If we can see past their super-nondetection field we can unscramble some coded papers.

While this doesn't guarantee that we'll learn concerning our heroes, it would be completely innocuous, and any information they provide us has the potential to be useful.

Also: after giving his report to the Grand Masters, Master Tapet burn his notes in a nearby brazier. Can't we reconstitute these papers? This might be our best bet on where to find relevant information.

The enchantment all Kamada seem to bear attempts to resist your intrusion but, well, it's quite laughable. Thumbing through his memories, you pluck free the ones dealing with this assignment... hmmm. Compartmentalized, it seems. He was given only the targets, a dossier on them, a relative danger level (Twins - High, use caution. Moderate skill, large pool of artifacts. Paladin - Moderate. Powerful defensive artifact, respectable combat ability, vulnerable to subtle methods.) and a date it should be completed by. You note with alarm that the next method to be employed in eliminating the heroes will be to use a single-use artifact they were provided to implode the entire inn. It was apparently to be used if other methods failed.

Disappointed, you withdraw from his mind and cast aside his comatose form. The meat puppet flops to the ground instantly, breathing and alive but no longer a person in any sense of the word.

Maybe it's time Tissa received a vision from her goddess, Loris.

"Loris"--an illusion of our design--shall appear to Tissa in a dream and urge her not to stray from her quest to find the panacea for the high priest. Loris will say that the problems in Seluca (the corruption and the assassins) were purposely engineered by Loris's enemies to keep Tissa from her divine duty. and that she should leave with her companions as soon as possible.

Secondly, we shall put an enchantment our paladin and the twins such that the real and legitimate Loris is unable to directly contact or interact with them. We don't want the actual god to muddle things.

Vedibere, can we lay a protection on our heroes to ensure they will not die, and then immediately go to the grandmasters in the form of a small animal to offer them a deal to leave the heroes alone. Before making an offer can we mindscan to find exactly what they desire and offer them that so long as it poses no threat to our plans. If they make counter-offers can we have time to consider them? In addition, I would like to sense how true whatever they say is and what the actual truth is when they lie is possible.

    Bah, enough of this.

Time to swoop in and be impressive.

Become old bard guy again and walk right into the inn.
stop the traps from activating with you as a target (so that they don't go off when you enter but will if anyone else decides to take advantage of it).

Tell them that you know who is after them and that they are currently beyond their abilities to counter.

Advise them to leave and resume their quest, but if they so desire, tell them the location of the assassins guild and that entire group. Do not tell them why (especially since you don't exactly know).

After you are done, give them a batman exit (dematerialize as soon as they can't see you).

At the very least this will make things interesting.

    1. Go threaten the Kamada.
    2. Impersonate Loris and tell the heroes to get going.

We open up a mega can of worms by letting a large, powerful and widespread organisation aware of our presence.

If we do this, we appear directly to their meeting. Seal their meeting room, block all telepathy, check for any wards/contingency shit they might have in place.

Then have a nice quiet chat.

Let the Kamada know in no uncertain terms that if they continue to pester the heroes at this time you will drop an elephant on each and every one of them. Asian or african at your discretion. To prove it drop an elephant on one of them to emphasize the point. Do this before or after the rest.

    Continuing.
Should send the heroes to somewhere that has plenty of troubles that are within their means to handle. Preferably present a difficult challenge yet one that is accomplishable and has ample rewards, be they magic, etc. Possibly somewhere that will let them determine what the god making device the twins have does. Set the druid on that path as well so eventually they meet up and possibly join temporarily until the druid inevitably betrays them to take the orb thing to heal the land. It will be crushing and good experiene to the big arc against Laressa.

Do we need to send them elsewhere really? If the Kamada can be convinced that allowing our heroes to succeed in taking down the magistrate is a less painfull option than what we have in store for them, then I dont really see why we cant just let them finish that off. Possibly tell Kamada to help them hurry it along.

Really appearing to them and big shows of force were something we havent done much before because when we don't limit ourselves then whats the point in not just for example making everyone with the special Kamada spell cast on them spontaneously explode.

Enough of this. Reaching out you locate and twist the implosion artifact where it is, five blocks from the inn the heroes are staying at. A second later an enormous black void fills the space for several hundred feet in every direction, dematerializing everything, including the two remaining assassins. Wailing and screams fill the air as people caught on the edges of the blast bemoan the loss of bodyparts or loved ones, and there is naught but a perfectly spherical void in the ground and buildings to either side. Problem: Solved.

Yet that is not enough. Such ridiculous shenanigans have tested your patience to the breaking point, and it is time to put your foot down. You shift and materialize in the council chamber of the Kamada, floating down to the dias and scanning the grandmasters. Or where they would be, if they were here. Seething, you fling your hand out in a horizontal motion as the fabric of the universe twists and buckles within the chamber... and the grandmasters appear. One nude and clearly having been in the act of enjoying his wife’s company, three others with utensils in their hands, and one still dripping wet from what you imagine was a bath. The one thing they all share in common, however, is the look of shock plastered onto their faces.

    “I am displeased.”

The words fall like lead from your lips. Almost as one the grandmasters scramble for weapons or, in the case of the unclad ones, exits. Several daggers and one tiny bolt from a mni-crossbow come flying at you, but you wave them away and snap your fingers once again, stripping all weapons from them and slamming the few that had begun fleeing into their seats. “I said; I am displeased. If you do not desire to both die and have your entire organization annihilated then I suggest you endeavour to change that.”

“W-who are you?!” one of the female councilors asks, the one with the dwarven husband you note. Telepathic communication begins flicking between them, but you mentally reach out and slam down an absolute ward against it. The grandmasters reel back, mouths dropping open.

“Power. If you are lucky, not turned against you.” With that you rise into the air, clasping your hands behind your back. “What is your interest in the Paladin of Loris, Lady Tissa Voldire and the two siblings known as Lann and Liss?”

The grandmasters for the first time display a look not of fear, but of confusion, and it is several seconds before one answers; “Who?” With a narrowing of your eyes you elaborate, “You attempted to have them assassinated twice. Once by seven apprentices and a journeyman, more recently by three journeymen. Here, in this city.” Again they look at each other in confusion, but this time after several seconds one of them looks down and shuffles through some papers that remained on the desk in front of him. “Ah.. ah! Here! Item number... seventy-three. Removal of the elements disrupting the trade war between the local Magistrate Pavel and the head of Maluca Trading, Dammon.” he looks up, “Uh... we didn’t know their names. What seems to be the... problem? I take it you object to their deaths?”

He licks his lips before continuing, “I think I speak for all of us when I say that we would be more than glad to cancel the contracts and offer recompense for any problems, Lord...?” he trails off, apparently awaiting an answer. At the same time you feel a magical pulse run through the room and outward, and immediately everyone in the lower fortress ceases what they were doing and begins heading for the council room.

Tedious, boring, predictable. But not actively malicious, you suppose. A small change and all of the alerted Kamada tumble to a stop, falling into a dead sleep and crashing into the ground. At the same time you survey the council; “I have dealt with the reinforcements you summoned. I suggest not doing so again.” You brush away some dust that has begun collecting on the front of your robe as they sit agog before continuing, “Your recompense will be to cancel the contracts and ensure that no harm comes to them within this city, allow them to depose the magistrate or guild owner, and speed them on their way afterward. You will not follow or spy upon them, and if you are detected doing so I will return.”

You smile your best Evil Overlord smile and are suitably pleased as several of the council members blanch, despite likely being hardened assassins themselves, “You do not want that. Have we reached an understanding?”

One of the council members nods, “Yes. Your deal is... generous, of course. Might I know the name of our, ah, benefactor? This could be the start of a mutually beneficial relationship I believe.”

“No.” With that you dematerialize, shatter the telepathy ward, and wake the Kamada members. The following chaos is extremely rewarding, as is the immediate orders for the recall of the journeyman team, dispatch of agents to watch over the safety of your heroes, and rampant speculation on what you are. The consensus seems to be a god who has managed to penetrate the organization’s wards, though they do agree that it's possible you are a truly ancient and powerful wizard as well.

The next week passes smoothly and with the cessation of the assassin attacks and a sudden run of /extremely/ good fortune Tissa manages to find damning evidence of the Magistrate running a slave prostitution ring within the free city proper itself, and implicate the false priest of Loris as attempting to sell the city out to a foreign power. You’re not too sure how true either of these things are, but at least Tissa found the evidence she wanted and is preparing to leave now. The Kamada for the most part have kept to their word as well, you only said they couldn’t spy on the heroes after they left. The veritable deluge of inquiries into your nature and that of the heroes has not breached faith yet, and seem to be winding down as the heroes prepare to leave. Good enough.

Waiting for the council to resume its session you materialize once more to their gasps. You note the wardings have been strengthened even further, but that’s hardly a problem for you.

“Hello, gentlemen. I have come here this day to take your lives.” They all turn white, and you see some preparing to fight or bolt. You smile. “Joking, of course. You have done well. So well, in fact, that I have a proposition....”

They are only too happy to agree. After all, a wizard with the heroes at all times? It could hardly be called /spying/ if he was simply making regular status reports, now could it? After ensuring that they will in no way inform any of the party members (including the wizard) of the actual arrangement you depart, pleased.

Perhaps you won’t need to wipe them from the face of existence after all.

Awesome! Now the party has a source of some sort of arcane knowledge and they won't have to paw at artifacts like blind virgins on prom night.

Did we go ahead and make the spouses of the grandmasters immortalish as well?

I kind wanted to use that as a show of benevolence as well as unimaginable power.

The problem with these threads is that we can never agree on an action specific enough to be useful, so we end up with either no action or broad sweeping ones

I would disagree here. Rather than being passive and observatory we acted, and as a result we saved our heroes, made contact with the Illuminati, and added the 4th man to the party. I would say we did a damn good job so far. At any rate we've been more active than normal, which I think Vedibere appreciates.

    Time for OVER SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

    1. The wizard must have a wide brimmed floppy hat- they need not wear it, but they must have one in their possession
    2. The wizard must have a large staff - metal or wood is fine, but no stone
    3. The wizard must be dressed in loose fitting robes emblazoned with various colors, whether male or female
    4. If male the wizard must be or appear to be over 50 years in age and have a long white and grey streaked beard
    5. If female the wizard must be nearing her mid thirties, have worry lines and be sexually attracted to women

    SO WE HAVE SPOKEN
    SO IT SHALL BE

As long as the hat is also pointy I agree on all point

Oh- and they have to be relatively light hearted.
Everyone is so damn Dour and grim. We need a comedy relief member of the group

Gonna call it here tonight. Tell me what you want the OP to cover Friday.

Also, after this quest ends (whenever that is) I was thinking about doing another one. I would like input on what would be best:

    1. Assassin Quest: Futuristic setting where the player is an elite intergalactic assassin-for-hire.
    2. Exalted Quest: You're an exalt; do exalted things.
    3. Demon Quest: Play as a demonic tempter come to modern day earth to steal sols for satan.
    4. Inquisition Quest: You're an interrogator of the Inquisitor Lord Cladius Dane, recently deceased under mysterious circumstances.
    5. Rogue Trader Quest: You are the proud owner of a shiny new warrant of trade. Are you a bad enough dude to make your fortune?

    >>14504356
Assassin and exalted quest sound interesting
I'd shy away from the rogue trader quest- there have been three or so of those already
Demon quest - eeeh. I get tired of playing lolevul characters and corruptors. If you can find a new angle to work it, however, it might eb interesting
Inquisition quest sounds neat but you should be careful

Option 5. Fucking Rogue Traders are the most magnificent bastards in the Imperium.

    >>14504356

any of those sound great, but I like inquisition quest and rogue trader the most. I think exalted quest would get a little derpy with powerlevels, but you gave us infinite power and then made a good quest out of it, so what do I know?
    >> Anonymous 04/07/11(Thu)03:01 No.14504403
I'm sad they agreed so readily. I wanted to turn their blood to molten lead. Sometime in the future, I want to do that.

    >>14504356
Exalt. It's closest to the theme of this one, and we've already got enough 40k quests. That said, don't end this one anytime soon!

Would also consider Dark Lord Quest or Supervillain Quest. I think that's pretty self explanatory.

Demon Quest gets my vote, but hopefully that will be a while from now.

For the OP, I would like to see a summary of the wizard that is getting added to the party and a /brief/ overview of the investments we havn't seen in a while (EG, the Chef).

I am thinking that the chef will be discovered before too long so really I want to find out more about the elf's "family".

The druid and that other guy can stay on the backburner a bit longer while we finish up with that stuff that was being discussed about the elf in quest VIII as I know many people were very interested in her background

Well, I'm off to bed. I think I'll start the OP of the next thread with a brief wizard description and then shift to Laressa again.

    Night everyone, fun thread.
