While going HURRRR URRRRRR! and firing their guns into the air, the Tusken accidentally shoot some rebels. The Empire instantly recruits them as stormtroopers.

They play it professional for a bit, standing around, looking tough, being silent. Then one of them lets slip a: "...hurrrr." And one of them responds, and it just spirals.

This actually made me envision an anti-campaign. Your job isn't to find the McGuffin and kill Dark Lord McDickfuck, your job is to be a bunch of annoying little bastards who steals the McGuffin and buries it in a trailer park so the heroes will never find it. You're the guys who break in and burn down the ancient library before the heroes can get there. You're the guys who erase the quest clues from the old plaques. The ones who burn secret maps. And you've got a special hate-on for mysterious strangers who hand out quests.

    Why?

Sometime after the Battle of Endor, rumors began to spread regarding a "Cult of the Power Droids." Apparently, a pair of GNK Power Droids would come to one's door and request funding for a religious fringe group. Advice from renowned linguist Ebenn Q3 Baobab was that one should merely utter the phrase "Gonk. Gonk. I feel Saga has multiple problems.

#1: A large slice of abilities are useless if you don't do your combat with a grid.

#2: Almost everything ability you can get is "+1 to something" which just feels boring.

#3: Once you have a blaster rifle there's really no reason to use any other weapon, unless you're a Soldier with heavy weapons.

#4: The weapon modification rules hidden away in some of the splatbooks, along with the various feats and abilities, MAY just get you, gasp, up to +4 damage... which really does jack shit very, very rapidly as HP shoots upwards while damage remains completely static, making combat drawn-out and boring as hell unless you decide to complicate it stupidly with the condition track.
    >> Anonymous 04/22/11(Fri)09:39 No.14679354
    >>14679346

To answer your #4 problem: you do add half your level to damage rolls, too. It's hidden away in the core book somewhere, but there you go.

This. The KOTOR and Legacy Comics were fucking great. In the former a padawan whose a bit shit and in the latter Lukes junkie grandson. how can you not love that? The NJO books though, ehhhhhhhhh... too much like making a TV tie in.
    >> Anonymous 04/22/11(Fri)09:41 No.14679362
    >>14679354

That doesn't really add up to much considering how fast HP rises.

Also a #5 problem: The "trained" skill thing instead of skill points. Might make character creation easier, but also makes all characters of the same class painfully similar.
    >> Anonymous 04/22/11(Fri)09:44 No.14679381
    >>14679346
Oh, I didn't say that there were not other problems, however. With #1, the squares do translate into about 5 feet each, I've run it without a grid before and it was possible to simply use feet or meters for distance (each square is 1.5 m)

With #2, I do agree with you there, however I do recall a lot of the talents opening up new avenues for attack (mostly scoundrel talents)

With two weapon mastery, dual pistols become a pretty good option, also, given the splatbook for jedi, nothing I've seen can out damage a lightsaber.

Actually, you can get it up to a +9 by using signature device (2 small upgrades, one big upgrade). I forget which book that's in though.

All in all, its an alright system for a pulpy adventure but I think the d6 would lend itself better to something more serious.

Saga's okay if you really ignore a LOT of the rules, focus on keeping it system-light and treat most enemies as mooks instead of giving them PC-level health.

Also no Jedi PC's, but that's a golden rule of any Star Wars game you run.

Personally I've always thought that BESM could maybe hack it well.

What's the point of a ranger who can't track, or a rogue who doesn't know how to break locks?

Classes are professions, whatever your character knows on the side he's going to share a bunch of skills with everyone else of the same profession. If there is not enough detail to distinguish characters further, *that* is the problem, not having the same skills.

Okay, let's use D&D as an example, you have a rogue. But what KIND of rogue is he? Maybe he's an archetypal burglar, he knows how to hide, break and enter, and disarm traps, because he needs to. But what if he's just an assassin? Then he doesn't need to deal with traps, he just hides and stabs someone in an alley. And maybe he's got a few points spread in some non-rogue-y skills.

With the SW Saga system, you're pretty much forced to just cover the NECESSITIES for your class, and maybe one or two other skills. So every other Scoundrel is very likely to have the exact same skills as you, barring stat modifiers.

I have a friend who I'm trying to get into tabletop games-which he has resented since a group of That Guys in his high school tore up the character sheet he'd made with his dad and told him he wasn't smart enough.

www.vastempire.com is the main page, comnet.imperialnetwork.com is where the writing takes place

Thrawn era is best era. The people running the setting don't like Dark Empire either, so it looks like we're going off into a subplot about a galaxy-wide plague that opens the way for the protagonist pocket empire to do some aggressive expansion.

Incompetent? Fought off a full-fledged invasion by Thrawn. (With heavy losses, but...)

Immoral? Varies rather a bit, but krak-pup kicking evil isn't official policy.

Brainless? Unless you count the gungan stormtrooper...

Sociopathic space nazis? No more than the Empire normally would be. Peace through order and firepower and all that...

    It's honestly a good site.

OT, it's arguable if that's even true. Shield effects were understated on fighters, and there's one or two scenes where you see that effect with TIEs.

Further, even if they ARE unshielded, it seems to make little or no difference - fighters come apart under even light fire.

The "TIES are flying shitheaps piloted by morons" is entirely an EU (specifically, a Stackpole) invention.

It's canon that they don't have energy shields. They do have particle shields as standard, which are useless against anything but minor space debris, and require regular resupplying. That said, they're considered bad news because where there's one, there're dozens, they're fast enough to dodge most cannonfire, and the pilots tend to be well trained and fanatical.

You ARE aware that fighters in real life operate in squads or at least pairs, yes? There IS a reason for this, and it isn't "lots of shit planes need to cover each other." Never mind the fact that Rebels use squad tactics as well.

The simple fact is that in the original films, there is no basis for the "TIEs are shit" meme Stackpole invented. They regularly give as good as they get save where movie-critical heroes are involved or have reason to fail (see Tarkin's convoluted plan to let the Falcon escape and lead the Death Star to the rebel base directly).

Similar applies to the stormtroopers, who either win easily, lose due to ambush, lose by intent (Bespin, DS 1), or lose due to trying to kill the main characters who can't die or you have no film.

The simple fact of the matter is that there is little or no justification for many, many EU memes taken as gospel in the original three films.

Some things are better left forgotten. Like Ken the Jedi Prince. And Waru.

But seriously, TIE fighters. In the original movies, they did come off as more disposable- with their main advantages being their speed and numbers. Granted, they were a decent match for the rebels 1:1 in the original movie, but they couldn't take even a single hit from an X-Wing, while some X-Wings did survive hits. Hate to say it, but it fits. The idea that they're bad pilots, though? Nope.

Stormtroopers are also scary. Unless you're a protagonist or they have orders not to waste you (or you're a teddy bear, but the less said about that the better...), you really should run.

So they got a bunch of other guys to write even more novels. Some were really cool, some were cool, and all of them had X-Wings.

The tusken like him because he pays them with stuff and money and he likes them because, hey, they SOUND retarded but aren't, and APPEAR incompetent but aren't. That is better than most mercenaries because its the other way around with them.

Nobles in fancy dresses and upper class snobs everywhere, expensive jewels, fake medals on men’s chests and impossibly gaudy dresses on the ladies. And among them the merchant and his tusken group in filthy sand robes and brown facemasks.

“Like I said, highly competent. Nothing personal my dear, but I don’t like getting kidnapped or assassinated.

James was negotiating prices in a small shop on a rather not-important planet. He got lured here by another tip from another one of his many sources. The merchant infront of him was yet another nondescript person owning yet another nondescript little general store.

“In of gajillion billions among the universe. But this single one might have something interesting.” James mused to himself.

The merchant held a small device within his hands. “This is what you seek sir.”

James leant forward and observed the device while rubbing his chin, which was typical for him. The Tusken formed a circle around a shelf and looked at it while wildly gesticulating with their arms and HURRRRING and DERRRING. They did that surprisingly quietly tis time, which was rare for them.

“You see, this device has the following qualities…” The man began but James interrupted him:

“I am less interested in the items qualities and more in the items manufacturer. Is it true that this was made by Doom?”

The merchant attempted to wriggle himself out of the question for several minutes before James lost his patience and wiggled two fingers of his left hand in a “come here” motion. The tusken turned towards the merchant and slowly shuffled over in eerie silence.

“I cannot shake the feeling that you are being… dishonest with me. And I verily dislike such a thing.”

“You see, I merely dislike being lied to, “ James put his hands upon his chest to show who he was talking about. “But THEY can get very upset upon being lied to. So upset that, in fact, that they sometimes loose control over what they do.”

One of the tusken leant upon the expansive mahagoni table while tapping his foot against the inner glassworks. It was obvious that only a slight bit more force was necessary to break the glass. Another moved towards the shelves and took an expensive vase into his gloved hands.

“So much, in fact, that they can no longer concentrate well and watch out for their surroundings. You see, they are usually very vigilant towards everything but sometimes they just-” One of them lazily turned around while his walking staff loosely lay in his hands. The staff narrowly missed several expensive items.

“Stop noticing things. Little things. A different customer might slip, but without the tusken ready to catch them should they fall-“ One of the tusken leant closely to the merchant while tapping his shoulder with his staff. It was obvious that he could pull the man and make him “slip” without much pressure.

“And other things like that are suddenly… overlooked. Not kept in check. You know what I mean?”

One of the tusken held his balled hand over the ground. Small strands of sand started falling out of it. The sand landed only a few fingers wide away from an expensive chemical painting that would be destroyed if sand were to come onto it.

“And thusly… I believe you should tell me the truth about this object here. You wouldn’t want word of these… unfortunate happenstances to get out onto the street?”
    >> Anonymous 04/22/11(Fri)21:40 No.14685499
    >>14685471
On cue, the tusken near the shelf mumbled. “hurrrr….” in a very quiet voice. The sandholding tusken replied with a lowly spoken “Honk.” The merchant was already sweating and his eyes closed in fear when a raspy voice send shivers down his spine with an almost inaudible whisper of DERP.

“Okay okay… I got it from a shady smuggler on tattooine. I was only there because my ship needed repairs and there was no other planet available. It is rumoured to have belonged to Herpan DerpaHONK, one fabled tusken chieftain.”

“My, my. You should know that my friends are indeed TUSKEN. They are rather… upset that this item here was taken from their planet. You see, in their belief such items hold the persons soul after his death and the sould can only stay alive as long as it is on planet…”

The man suddenly felt a whole lot less comfortable and almost disappeared in his thick clothing.

“But I am sure that there is still time to heal him back to full health, and that makes my friends here rather relieved. “

One of the tusken quietly raised his arms, held the staff above his head, and whispered: “hurrrrrrr, honk darrr hurrrrr.”

“So I assume that you will give us a fair price and we can all call it a day, yes?”

The man nodded and the staff on his shoulder disappeared. The transaction itself was done quickly and surprisingly cheap. As the group left the last tusken to leave the building made a mocking bow and took off a black fedora hat.

    “Honk honk.” Then he left.

A few uncomfortable minutes passed before the merchant thought: “Where the hell did that savage get this hat?

Actually, I felt that Wraith Squadron is the real start of the series, and it's pretty good. 'Starfighters of Adumar', however, is possibly the funniest EU book of all time, and I mean that in a good way. The Rogue Squadron boys, minus Corran Horn, are simply *fucking crazy* in that one.

The whole "TIES are deathtraps" thing really came out of the old X-wing sim games, where shields were very, very strong in order to allow for a more arcade-y experience (otherwise you'd be dying in one or two hits). Movie-wise it seems even shielded rebel fighters can only take a hit or two more than an unshielded TIE and seem to be slower and more ungainly.

Mixed feelings about the X-wing series. On the one hand, it's one of the few long-running series that *isn't* about a Jedi, or have anything to do with Jedi.

On the other hand, the protagonist eventually discovers he has Force powers and does become a Jedi.

On one hand, great space battles and really gives the sense of military sci fi in some of the set-ups, in the early books. The first book shows how lethal things can get on the front-lines. They lose several pilots in a mission that has terrible intel. Their airbase gets attacked by a commando raid, etc.

On the other hand, some of the setups and odds later just gets rather ridiculous and the series does suffer really from power creep.

Also, things get less and less militarily grounded as time goes on, it felt like. By Wraith Squadron, we've got "Well, fighter pilots aren't special enough, so let's make them fighter pilots - who are COMMANDOS!". It sort of lost all the military trappings that made it interesting.

In response to one post way back for Saga Edition: easiest way to be effective in higher-level combat with scads of HP is to go for a Condition Track-killer build. The CT is pretty much every character's weakest point and WOTC killed the line before the developers could really do much to negate it beyond a few feats or talents.

Also, Star Wars EU is best viewed and treated like a buffet: take the stuff you like and ignore the crap. Most will find you somewhat odd and off-putting if you cling to every little episode of the Droids or Ewoks cartoons as valuable little morsels of canon. And furthermore-HUUUUURRRRRR HURHURK HURRRRRRR!!!!
