The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

Until recently you were simply Aino Virta, a fifteen year old girl living with a secret burden known only to your immediate family: your mutant power - until recently quite uncontrollable - to slow the fabric of time itself in a bubble around you.

It's been just over a month since you arrived at the Mansion, and in that time you've managed to make yourself a part of the School despite the hurdles you've faced. Masked anti-mutant crusaders trying to break into the Mansion, giant robots trying to apprehend you and your friends, and criminals with jet packs are nothing compared to the drama you've had to face living in a house with eight other super-powered teenagers. On top of that you've got to deal with homework, and even though you can freeze time you still can't help being late for class.

Thus it is that we find our young heroine sitting alone outside on a warm May afternoon, propped up against one of the large columns that frames the Mansion's front doors, trying to finish the last chapter of a book in time for Dr. McCoy's literature class - the last class of the day before your regular time in the Danger Room.

Your friend Sam is nowhere to be seen - in the week since her parents' divorce became public knowledge she's made herself scarce - and as you look up from your at the peals of laughter across the lawn you see Megan react to the Frisbee flying at her by zapping it with an arc of white-hot electricity that melts the plastic disk into sludge. Getting out of her room seems to be doing her a world of good - in the week since events led her to swap her sealed room for a modified UMF suit* she's emerged from her cocoon of shyness and become quite the social butterfly!

"Hey, Aino!" Luke and Mary Ann wave and call to you when they see you watching them. Though the two students speak and act as one, they could not look more different - one is pale and red-haired while the other is nearly ebony. "Grab a new Frisbee and come join us!"

Fifteen minutes until class starts, mutie! What will you do?

Unless it's a really BIG bubble, slowing time in a bubble around yourself is pretty much the most worthless power you can imagine.

"Oh look! While I'm slowed to a crawl in here, everyone around me is moving at normal speed! THIS SURE IS AWESOME!"

You'd be better off describing it as speeding UP time in the bubble since that seems to be what you're going for. Remember the girl in NYX with a similar power and how it caused friction and damage to things she touched because SHE was moving fast and they weren't? That sort of thing.

Though I guess slowing down time in your little bubble might be good for getting extra sleep or something. At least it explains why she'd always be late, what with everything around her in the bubble being so slow.

You figure that between what you read over lunch and what you can skim during the beginning of class there's nothing to worry about, and grab a new Frisbee from the cardboard equipment box sitting in the sun before joining the other three for some post-lunch exercise, leaving your copy of Kindred laying on the steps.

The game is obviously powers-on, which explains why Luke and Mary Ann are able to predict who the Frisbee is going to be thrown to, so it's no problem to slow down the timestream around you and grab the disk as it flies toward you in slow-motion. Tempting as it might be, you think using your control over the tachyon field to launch the Frisbee at hypersonic speed might not endear you to the others, but you still catch every toss that's thrown to you - a feat Luke and Mary Ann can't achieve despite their psychic awareness.

Ten minutes later the game breaks up, and as you head back inside (grabbing your book on the way in) the other students file back in, Sam with them. "Hey," she says as you walk into the room where Dr. McCoy sits on his desk.

"Good afternoon, all," McCoy says as you enter. "I've been looking forward to our discussion of this novel all week!"

"And Aino, what do you think the loss Dana suffers at the end of the book reflects?" McCoy asks you. For a moment you're stumped - then, with a combination of strategic time-freezes and astute observation you deliver a response that makes your teacher think for a long moment before he can respond!

"My stars, I had never considered that," he says, closing his book. "I knew you would be able to offer unique input on this novel, Aino."

"Don't forget, everyone, your essay on the book is due tomorrow by this time," he says, looking up at the clock. Thanks to a month of steady practice your bubble of control can contort to avoid certain areas - like clocks whose asynchronous times might alert people to your power's use!

With your last official class for Thursday aced, you have a free period that you normally reserve for time in the Danger Room! Clarissa grabs your arm on the way out of class and says "Hey, don't forget, we're watching the last episode of Blossom tonight! You wanna go play some more Frisbee now?" she asks, gesturing out the window to the warm sunny lawn.

What now, Aino? More games, the Danger Room, or something else?

"About time you took a break from the Danger Room!" Clarissa laughs as she runs outside, dragging you with. A few moments later Ricardo, Caleb and Megan join you on the lawn, and the game begins!

"You sure you're not using your powers?" Ricardo says to you as he flings the Frisbee at you. "Because you're sure slow at this!"

"Hey, be nice, you jerk!" Clarissa yells at him. "Why do you even hang out with him?" she turns to Caleb and asks.

"Huh?" Ricardo asks as the Frisbee sails toward him - and as soon as he catches it you fling yourself forward at him, knocking him down!

Clarissa - no stranger to roughhousing - leaps on top of him as well, and though she drops with enough force to knock the wind out of anyone she lands like a feather! "Aww, no fair using your power!" she says, jabbing him in the ribs with one finger.

"Ahh, get off me!" he shouts, trying to roll over as Megan sits on his legs, pinning him. "Help me, geez!" he shouts at Caleb, who stands watching the melee.

"Dude, they're girls," Caleb chides. "Help yourself."

From where you're all piled on the lawn you catch sight of Sam sitting on the steps watching you! Underneath, Ricardo is starting to break free!

His threat is cut off as Clarissa grabs his arm. "Hey, quit being such a jerk! You asked for that!"

Sam stands and watches the exchange next to Megan - in the last week their roles have been reversed with Sam's normal chattiness replaced by dim silence. "Oh, whatever," Ricardo says, yanking his arm out of Clarissa's grasp and storming away toward the Mansion.

"Jerk," Clarissa repeats again as she watches him stalk off with her firsts balled, more to herself than anyone else. Sam raises an eyebrow at you.

"Right, I'm on it!" Clarissa shouts, concentrating all her effort on controlling the Blackbird - and a moment later two equally large carnivores shimmer into view, backed by the electronic roaring emanating from the jet's external speakers! As the tyrannosaurs posture and roar at their ghostly interlopers Sam grabs you by the armpits and carries you across the stream to the Blackbird's hatch!

The two of you free Ms. Grey and begin to drag her back to safety, focusing your tachyon control over the stream to make it solid enough to walk on - when one of the tyrannosaurs lunges forward at its perceived enemy and charges through it straight at you!

*KZAP!* The tyrannosaur is knocked backward by the bolt of electricity Megan launches at it as the two of you rush for safety!

"Freeze them now!" Megan shouts as you make it to shore, standing ready to let loose another blast of white-hot electricity. You grab hold of the timestream and drag the tyrannosaurs to a stop as they bear down on you, halting everything around the circle of friends and the unconscious Ms. Grey.

"Oh, great," Clarissa says, looking up at the gigantic open jaws hanging motionless half a dozen paces from her. "Now we're in a standoff."

"Not quite," Sam says, holding up a first-aid kit and pointing it at the unconscious Ms. Grey.

With that, the jungle wavers and disappears, replacing itself with the blank walls of the Danger Room once again!

"Nice job, ladies," Mr. Summers says from the control room as Ms. Grey's body fades away with the rest of the simulation. "Time to call it a day?"

Exhausted but invigorated from your workout in the Danger Room, you break from the others to clean up, then track down Mr. Logan to ask him about Canada.

"Heard about me, huh?" he asks, filling up a glass of water from the kitchen sink and draining it down in one gulp. "I been to Yukon before. Nice place. It was a while before your parents moved there, though."

"Tell ya what, kid, you gimme a call next time you're up there, and we can have a cookout or something. Chuck says I'm supposed to put on a good face for you kids' parents, after all."

That said, Mr. Logan seems unwilling to divulge much more about his life in Canada, so you take the hint and retreat back to the game room, where most of the other students have congregated to watch TV and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in lieu of a formal dinner. "Hey, Aino, it's on in an hour!" Clarissa calls as you walk past the doorway. Lingering for a moment, you see a familiar sight on the television - a crowd of angry-looking people chanting and holding signs bearing slogans like "PROTECT OUR RIGHTS" and "MUTIE SCUM". The screen changes to a reporter who states that "Today's anti-mutant protest is reportedly the largest yet in the state of New York, with an estimated crowd of more than thirty thousand people. Speculation of a possible appearance by the outspoken Senator Robert Kelly has likely fueled these numbers. More on this story as it develops."

Once the news is over and the sitcom block starts Mr. Logan makes himself scarce, just as Clarissa returns with a big bowl of freshly made popcorn. "Ohmygosh it's starting!" Clarissa says excitedly as she drops down on the carpet in front of the sofa in front of you and Sam.

Just as the title credits begin to play and you snuggle into a more comfortable position, the screen changes back to the news, as the reporter from before looks around nervously. "Hey!" Sam shouts at Noah, "Turn it back!" but he points at the remote control sitting on the table next to him.

    "I didn't touch it!"

"Shhh, listen!" Luke and Mary Ann say, pointing at the screen.

"-within the last five minutes. Once again, the Brotherhood of Mutants, a mutant supremacy terrorist group, has taken more than twenty people hostage, including Senator Kelly. "A diversion, huh?" Mr. Logan says, the only one in the room who isn't engrossed in the television. "Maybe. Can't imagine what, though. Magneto's all about flash - don't know if he's got the brains to pull that off."

Do they A)Harmonize and resonate with each other, giving us an ultimate Sonic at-will weapon? or B) do they reach the target at the same time, along with our voice. This cacophony of multiple sources would certainly warrant some Sanity damage, no? As such, we could stop time, scream from various points, retreat and see our enemies discombobulated!

Go with Logan, tell him we'll zip back if anything happens to him and get everyone to a safe room. failing that, ask him were said safe room would be.

    hypothesis: Will Multiple-man pull a small-wagon many-clowns on us?

A moment later you hear someone shout "Hey Logan, easy, easy, it's me, man!"

As the voices approach you, you can hear the other man say "It was just a joke! Lighten up!" Suddenly he's propelled into the room thanks to a good shove from Mr. Logan, who barks "There's never a good time for your jokes, Madrox."

The man catches his balance and stands up, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "Um, hi kids!" he says. A moment later another man exactly like him walks in behind Mr. Logan and repeats the phrase! Just as Mr. Logan holds up his fist with the implication of extending his claws a third Mr. Madrox emerges from the hallway and says "Hi ki- yeesh, bad timing."

"All right, you kids do what Mr. Madrox here says. We'll be back sooner or later." As Mr. Logan picks up the bag he stowed at the edge of the room he looks back at you. "Don't do anything stupid."

With that, he departs, leaving you and the three Mr. Madroxes in the room with a rerun of the Fresh Prince.

"So... you kids like cartoons?" one of the Madroxes asks.

    What now?

Breathe a sigh of equal parts relief and irritation. Go watch cartoons or whatever. At least we aren't in any apparent danger. Keep an eye on this Mr. Madrox, though.

    Sounds a bit pedo...

Ask him, how many more of him he can make and if they are all connected, or if he just feel and knows, what the replicas felt, when they merge again.

Also, which one is the real one?

Half an hour later one Madrox is watching Beavis and Butt-Head with his feet propped up on a coffee table, while another is in the kitchen making a sandwich. As you slow down time and stealthily make your way through the room another Madrox emerges from behind you inside your bubble of realtime!

"Hey!" he says, immediately realizing what you're doing. "You're that time-control kid, Aino. Charlie warned me about you. No funny business, I'm supposed to make sure you all stay safe with this stuff going on. Don't make my job any harder."

"How many? Lots and lots. Like, dozens of mes," the Madrox next to you says. "We can't feel anything except dying, which sucks by the way. And yes, we know what happened when we merge back together."

"Yeah, I guess you're too old for cartoons. I don't know how to deal with kids your age, I guess. They just called me because I was in the state and the agency owed Charlie a favor."

"And I'm the real one," he says, grinning. "Honest."

"Please clarify," the voice of the Mansion's computer responds.

"No time control!" Madrox shouts anxiously.

"So are you gonna let him go or what?" he asks, nodding to the other Madrox who's been frozen in the act of slathering mustard onto bread for the last minute.
