    173 KB Truly powerful Pathfinder Characters thread? <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)01:08 No.14863919
Hi guys, I'd like to talk to you a non-magical character that did very well for himself amidst magi and clerics and whatnot.

I have forgotten his name a long time ago, but since reading [REDACTED], I have decided to rename him Keter.

Keter was a Human fighter. Str 16(18 post-race), Dex 15, Con 10, Int 14, Wis, 11, Cha 13. Fighters have a reasonalbe house rule amongst our group where they get 4 skill points + Int/level, and get 2 freely chosen skills as class skills. I chose Knowledge (The planes) and Sense motive. The setting was an apocalypse-like aftermath of ruinous wars that left the world vaguely reminiscient of Demon's Souls. And my party was a TN Ranger/Rogue with 2 ranger levels per Rogue level as his chosen build, a LG Cleric, and a NG Bard/Sorc even split.
I was LE. I chose Planar Knowledge because the planar enemies of the world were everywhere, and all that jazz, while also being a fairly studious Demonologist, also I was rather paranoid and would Sense motive spam with anyone I thought was untrustworthy.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)01:21 No.14864056
So, over time, we get up to the usual hijinks of a desolate wasteland adventuring party. The bard and I providing knowledge on our enemies, codicing the monsters we faced (the DM made up a lot of new ABerrations, Undead, and Outsiders) for their weaknesses and strengths.
The Ranger and I were the bulk of the fighitng, we'd flank and destroy the enemy if possible, but mainly, we'd try and get the Cleric to do binding. The other 3 characters were a fairly decent healing base, and here I was, only a Fighter. A callous sell-sword that helped the group for a cut of the money and an excuse to hone his killing skills.

I sided with a mainly Good party because while I may have been evil, the beasts were unnatural and the taint was spreading slowly. It's not fun to have so few healthy people left, and I was not about to let my few companions die just because I didn't like them. I didn't trust them, but they didn't trust me much either. I tended to get carried away a bit, taking trophies from every new horror we faced.

I took Combat expertise, figuring staying alive is better than a good hit, also Paranoia. I was a bit reluctant to do this with Power attack, but it was the 1st feat I took, so I stuck with it.
By level 6 I had also decided to further my evil nature. I took the Disciple of Darkness feat and twisted the rules of good and evil to gain the divine spark for most anything I could. I had used Focus, Specialisation, and Improved critical on Falchions, and given the maddened natre of the wild beasts we faced, Hold the Line.

It was at level 6 that the DM put us against the Erinyes.

i had a level 20 fighter on pathfinder
The DM didn't really understand the rules for buffing a weapon, so I had flame burst, ice burst, acidic burst, holy burst, vorpal, keen, etc etc

And all I had to do was confirm for critical hits anyway so I was pretty sweet dps
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)01:35 No.14864190
The Erinyes was 2 levels above our ECL, and a bit of a dick move, but we shrugged it off.
Our characters thought we were fighting a few monsters away and the Erinyes that lobbed flaming arrows at them, saving us the trouble of working for our kill, was an Angel. The Cleric went down on his knees and prayed thankfully for the sign that the Gods hadn't forsaken the world. Then it opened fire on him, being a fallen Angel, it was killing chaotic beings but was after us for slaying other Devils. We were to be brought to justice, all of us. I wasn't free from blame, because I let them live myself.

She swoops down on us and slashes at me with her sword, I take a nice hit and slash at her with the Flachion as she darts away, but swing too slow to get a hit on her. The others do their thing, lobbing whatever ranged attacks they had (mine were limited to a few Cold Iron Throwing axes at this point). So I used a Knowledge (the planes) check, and after some time avoiding her swipes and combat style, the others doing their thing and all of us getting peppered with arrows, I realize that the lord of the Erinyes is Dispater. I'd been codicing this shit with the Cleric and bard, so I knew I was right.

So I roll diplomacy, shouting out to her that I supplant myself to her lord's will. She screeches for me to prove it and strikes me with a full volley. I do my best but am still hit a couple of times. I try again, demanding the opportunity to prove my worth of attaining power as hers.
She laughs cruelly and shrieks as she charges me. Hold the line, hit, Crit. She pulls back, just outside of effective firing range, and demands proof of my conviction. She tells me to sacrifice an innocent on an altar of iron in veneration of her Master.

So I nodded grimly and turned to the other players. They knew what was likely to happen. They grinned. I grinned. The DM scoffed.
In character, the Cleric was shocked at me for my bold announcement, the Ranger didn't care, and the Bard was a bit sad, but not too worried.
Until just now. I strode purposefully toward the Cleric, and ran him through. As his eyes bugged out of their sockets in pain and surprise, I twisted the blade and let him slide down it to the handle.
As I did, I shouted out to the hovering Erinyes "I AM A WARRIOR IN THIS TUNDRA! I HAVE NO ALTAR BUT MY BLADE! UPON THIS SWORD DO I GIVE MY OFFERINGS TO DISPATER!"

The DM wasn't too happy with me for that, but he still admitted it was a good enough gambit to satisfy the Erinyes. So she leaves us for Hell.
The Bard tries to heal the Cleric, who is dying (still not dead), but I stand in the way. "best leave him or else your neck is cut by my axes. He needs a slow death to be sufficient sacrifice."
Intimidate rolls = passed. The other 2 look on in shock as I make sure the Cleric can't do anything until the bleeding stops. I leave my Falchion where it is and we continue our trek.

Now I started taking levels in Disciple of Dispater.
(Disclaimer, this is some 3.5 stuff here, but the Book of Vile Darkness just doesn't exist in Pathfinder. The DM said that SOME 3.5 books could be used. I chose that one).
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)02:07 No.14864528
So from then on I alternated between 2 levels of "Iron Disciple" and 1 level of Fighter. So by lvl 13 I could summon an Erinyes of my very own.
It was a while afterwards, obviously. I had taken the following feats by now:
Combat Expertise, Focus: Falchion, Specialisation: Falchion, Improved critical: Falchion, Hold the Line, Improved Trip,
Power attack, Combat Reflexes, Disciple of Darkness, Power critical: Falchion, Intimidating Prowess, Persuasive, and Skill focus: Diplomacy.
    I was a Fighter 8, Iron Disciple 5 with 18Str, 16Dex, 10 Con, 14 Int, 12 Wis, and 14 Cha.
I had broadened my horizons with weapons, I used more than just a few axes now, I also had a lot of Long knives and a new Flachion which was enchanted to critical burst with acid damage. It was fun.

By now, Keter was a renowned warrior. He walked into one of the few towns and cities left on the countryside and was lauded. None of his evil nature was revealed to the public. All the masses had to go on were the Ranger and Bard both looking rather cowed and quiet near him. They also wouldn't talk about him.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)02:23 No.14864697
Keter had an aura of menace about himself. While the DM told us of other people trrawling the wastes for something of value, all of them were typically Fighters, rogues, and a bit of magic. Like a rich-boy Wizard hiring a couple of swordsmen to carry his loot and a Bard to tell him where they were on the maps. That kind of thing.
All of the other fighters would hear about Keter being in the inn and try to offer him drinks, and Keter just sat. Bolt upright, back to the wall, and said nothing to them. He would never drink, he'd never go after random loose women. He would just wait for the other 3 (The Cleric was replaced by a Druid) to be ready and he'd leave with them. He had acquired one of those rings of sustenance, so he needed nothing.
All of the money he'd been accumulating was spent on a suit of Demon armour. So he was a towering iron demonic statue in any city he went into. The people thought it was Draconic, so loved him all the more. The fools.
He had 26 AC without using Combat Expertise, he never needed to eat, drink, or sleep, and his power with the Falchion was unmatched. His paranoia caused by patronage of Dispater and the way the wastes' taint spread ever slowly further fuelling his desire to need nothing.
There was one thing missing. He wished to not need worry about age weakening him. He desired immortality.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)02:37 No.14864801
After some time, Keter was noticing how the tundric wastes were getting thicker with the monsters, more and more creatures he knew appearing, and new breeds just bubbling from the woodwork. The Bard and Druid both worked out that there were ruins with Demonic conduits that allowed outsiders to self-summon, and mutated all the living creatures nearby. Essentially a series of blight-spreading 'portal stones'. They all decided it was a good idea to go find a way to seal them shut. Keter agreed. The taint was all that threatened his life now, and he now no longer fought alongside the Ranger and Bard for money, knowing there are things at work here that even the Devil-duke Dispater would disapprove of.

He didn't trust any of them, not one bit. Least of all the Druid. How a Druid can still use their powers in a land so unnatural made him suspicious. At least the other two had proven themselves able to be relied on in an encounter... But he pulled all watch shifts every night; half keeping an eye out for betrayal.

We eventually found one of the "Blightstones". Hidden in the ruins of an old fortress built on both sides of a river.
The first thing Keter did in this situation was summon his Erinyes when the others were exploring the ruins. They left me to my own devices as I guarded the entrances from any followers. Confident they were gone, I summoned forth the Fury for the 1st time ever.
    >> Anonymous 05/09/11(Mon)02:49 No.14864932
    Continue.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)03:01 No.14865044
So the DM says the Erinyes I summon bears a scar very similar to the one I inflicted on the 1st one we fought, and in fact, it IS the same one. I grin at the Erinyes and point toward her, Intimidate check (+26). I growl that she and I have unfinished business, and to strip herself of her armour (as would I) so we could kill one another in a true battle of skill.
She asked why I would offer to remove my armour as a disciple of Dispater, and I laughed. "To make it more interesting!"
It was brutal. I picked up my long knives, and slashed at her, cutting whatever I could. She responded in kind, hacking me with that fiery longsword as best she could. But every strike she laid upon me, thanks to Karmic strike, was one AoO for me, and my own attacks were every bit as furious but twice as numerous. Her DR meant my Power attack actually came in handy. I pulled the rusting touch on her sword and reduced her to teeth and claws, I used my Iron Hews as if my life depended on it.

I was only wearing my under-armour clothing, completely counter to my usual 'walking pillar' ideal. But this Erinyes and I had a score to settle. Our satisfaction as warriors demanded it. I didn't care if I died in this fight, because it would be a fight of TRUE supremacy over the other. This fight, of all fights, mattered; because if I lost it I would be HER thrall under Dispater, and I wouldn't have it any way but her being MINE. Eventually I tripped her when she was low on HP, and pinned her down with the 2 Alchemical silver long knives I held. One through each wrist.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)03:03 No.14865065
Then I brandished a Holy +1 Kukri, took the negative level, kneeled over the Erinyes, and got to work cutting her heart out. My negative level denied my the ability to summon the Erinyes anymore, so for now it was 'no longer my summon' and so he thrashing became all the wilder, but she was fucked. I had fought harder than her and the results spoke for themselves... She was crippled and helpless before my blade.
When I had her heart exposed, I laughed.

The DM gave me a queer look. I could tell he was really beginning to hate Keter. And I coup-de-grace'd myself, passed the Fort Save, and cut my OWN heart out, saying "I won't be needing you anymore". With my life ending as I spoke, I sliced my heart in half, force-fed the pinned Erinyes one half, and tore hers out to replace what I had lost.

The other players had found the Blightstone in the ruins and were returning by now. The Ranger was going on ahead, and saw the scene from this post onwards.

The DM rolled some dice, and didn't look like he enjoyed what they represented.
"Dave, the Erinyes's heart burns you intensely as a deep cedar-green flame engulfs the parts it connects to you. Your heart is now that of a Fury."
    I grin.
"But because you're a cunt, I'm saying you've lost a permanent 10 max HP and 2 Con. Also your heart burns painfully forever more. This is the curse you have given yourself."
    I grin some more. "I don't care."

Now, the Erinyes has no heart and has 20 more rounds to live. 2 minutes? Cool. Enough time to get the point across.
I ate the other half of my mortal's heart quickly, passing fort save to keep it down, and began to rape the dying Erinyes. She was mine now, bound to me in service of Dispater, I thought this final insult would hammer that home. And so I did the deed; as she dies, the Erinyes dissolved in the same green flame as she was pushed back to Hell in death.

I threw away the holy Kukri, disgusted that I was still holding onto it for as long as I did.
I put my armour back on, and the Ranger finally had the guts to speak.
"Did you see anything out here, Keter?" Sense motive = passed.
"No. Nothing that you should ever speak of again."

I regained the lost HD, but now had -23HP in total. The DM knows that I have a thing for that number ever since the damn movie. The Ranger promised that he'd never speak of it again. I had no hate for him, he was a decent combatant, and he had plenty of chances to screw me over in the past that he never took, even when I was treading the path of evil paranoia.

So I believed him, and got him to help me don my armour again. So here I was:
    Con 8 and -10max HP
    for
DR5/Good, Resist Acid & Cold 5, Immunity to fire (but my heart burnt me at all times) and poison. And SR 19.
Plus, I had the heart of an Erinyes in my body. An eternal bond between the two of us meant I was now Immortal, said the DM. But if one of us died, the other would too.
Essentially, if I die with her heart in my body, that ONE Erinyes will permanently die, too. And if she is killed in Hell, I die out of nowhere.

Once armoured again, I pick up my Falchion and follow the Bard to the blightstone.

Ok, so. The Bard tries to do his dispelling thing, but it's protected against spells that disrupt its own magic. Not even his blasty Sorc spells are enough to damage it.
His knowledge (engineering) says it's a spire made out of Deep Obsidian, and his abilities allow him to know there's Starmilk. Just a sliver of it. In the core. The Druid tries his Druidic stuff, but to no avail. Normally his spells would allow him to just crush the spire, but the whole thing is spreading the blight... so any plant matter that touches it becomes mutated and blackened. Essentially lashing out at us for one feeble swipe and then rotting to dust.

Ranger's not even going to bother trying to carve into it. He's busy protecting us from disease with his spells. He's tried sundering it, but he hasn't the strength. It's to me they turn. I tell them "Go wait out of this room. I'll come back out when I'm done."
So I rest for 4 hours, regaining my dailys, and get to work.
Iron Hews with maximum power attack gave me +16 to damage. I took 20 on my sunder check, essentially taking 2 minutes to line up the perfect splitter strike. The attack dealt 33 damage. Not bad. But then the whole stone glowed with a nearly-yellow green flame.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)03:46 No.14865371
So yeah, the Obsidian glows yellowish-green for a while, screeching in a high-itched whine.
I do a sunder again. Deal max damage (38+6 Acid) but destroy my Falchion in the process.
The crystal breaks and the flash of energy dazzles me.

When I can focus again, I see a small shard of iron that's stained jet-black. It keens with corrupting power. I take it in my hand, being immune to diseases (The taint by now was discovered to be a disease similar to but less High-octane than Phyrexia), and hear many voices in my head all of a sudden:

    >>14865178
Now, I forgot to mention the DM wanted to weird me out, so he regailed me with the look on the Erinyes' face. It was "Full of hate, that much is obvious, but the hatred is tempered by a sense of... almost pride in what you're doing. Almost like she hates you but approves, and she smiles wickedly at you as she weakly grinds the remains of your heart she still has in her maw between her teeth."
So yeah, it was weird for both of us, anon.

The Erinyes appears again, this time a large scar over her heart's absence also prominent. Then I immediately use rusting grasp on the starmilk, rendering it useless and destroying the enchantment.
"When you return to Dis, tell our master what I have just done." And I look up at her. She's got an appraising look on her face, and, calmly, asks why I summoned her for such a small thing. Keter raises his hand to her and gives a swordsman's handshake.
"Because now, you're the only one I can trust fully. We share our fate, you and I. My failure is yours, yours mine."

    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)04:10 No.14865498
The Erinyes gives me her name: Mer'Karas. I give her mine; Keter.
The other players are laughing quietly and so I decide to ham it up. I grab Mer'Karas by the back of the head, grasping her hair, and kiss her. She returns serve, there was 1HP damage as she bit into my lip almost with intent to take it off... almost.
Then I dismiss her and put my helmet back on. I walk out of the room successful.

So, the others are starting to doubt me because I've got only a couple of iron AXES... again.
I assure them that I'll be ok. And so we stalk through this ruined city, finding nothing.
It's almost as if anything of value to anyone was stripped clean of this city.
Then we're told to roll Perception, and Keter freaks. He sees figures skulking around the rooftops.

He backs up against the wall and readies himself for a bad day. We're attacked by armored folk ducking and diving amongst each other and throwing knives at us. We deal with this well enough, but when they get close, they all wield Khopeshi and use charging trip attacks all over the place. I use hold the Line and plow my opponent with a gauntlet made of iron (1d10+6+Contagion), then get to work soaking up damage and breaking limbs.
These creatures, while humanoid in appearance, have an unnaturally dense build. They appear to be Fey, but also Demonic, but also Mortal. Hard to pinpoint exactly what they are.

We decide this news is big enough to return to civilization with; that there looks to be groups of organised and skilled brigands in the wastes... And the source of the Taint.

    It's cool, anon. It's cool.

So we're almost on lvl 15 by now. So the DM decides what an appropriate encounter is for us is a heavily tainted adult Copper Dragon! 2 of them! The Taint driving them to madness and between them they've got a rider.
    Fuck.
Tainted Dragons lose a lot of their abilities, but their breath weapon is a save vs getting massively infected, apparently. Still...
    Fuck.

So we grit our teeth and begin to fight like never before. The ranger leaps up onto one of the Dragons and tackles the rider, and the casters use the best magic they can to stop the Dragons. Me? I just stand where I am, between the casters and slightly in front.
One of the dragons lands in front of me and lances its taint breath right through me, hitting the Druid as well. I'm immune (to the DM's Chagrin), and the Druid passes his save and so only takes half the taint score... amounting to 8.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)04:38 No.14865676
Keter stands still, waiting. He throws one of his axes at the Dragon using his last standard Iron Hews this day. It gets the Dragon's attention.

The Ranger's having a good old time riding the other Dragon, causing it to taint itself by escaping its breath attacks while on its back.

Our Dragon is pissed. It lunges at me with 2 claws and a bite. I weather it, badly, but I do.
Each hit was a full-power attack Greater Iron Hews Demon armour gauntlet punch, so 1d10+25+contagion. I send the Dragon reeling, then full attack with my own turn now that it's close.
Magic finishes it off, and the Ranger watches as the other Dragon kills itself by filling itself with infection, dying a tumorous husk.

We hate this city. We continue leaving. The same motherfuckers following us and not letting us rest. We get away from a raid, we get followed, we begin resting, I let them know we're being ambushed, and we fight again, beleagured and tired. No more healing available, and no more spells.
I'm limited to punching. I hate this. Where's my Falchion!?!?

It's almost a month of in-game time that we suffer like this. We expected to last longer than we did before needing to get back, and when we finally reach one of the few non-tainted towns, it's succumbed and we have to kill 'innocents'. The Bard has a bit of a breakdown, they leave the Druid alone except when he hits them, and the Ranger tries desperately to find a way to get out of the situation.
    ...
Keter stands still, untaintable and one-shotting the level 1-3 commoners that assail him with 1d10+6 damage a hit.

So I'm indestructible against the mindless zombies with my DR against their puny attacks, and I can reliably kill them dead in 1-2 hits. The others realise this and begin falling back to my position. Then the Druid's taint score increases as he is surrounded by placid infected commoners who don't seem to notice him.

Then the Erinyes appears again. Unbidden.
I never wanted Keter to summon her unless he was alone, and with the others being pestily RIGHT THERE all the time he didn't get the chance. Purther proving his theory that hell is others.
But Mer'Karas sends a groan from the other players' characters. And they prepare for a raping. I scowl from underneath my helm and wait for her to explain herself.

Then, Mer'Karas alights between us all and casts a teleportation spell that takes us to untainted lands, before winking at us and retreating to her plane. I feel all plot-device and awesome, but Keter's enraged. He doesn't say anything though.

As the Bard tries to explain what's happening to the Eldars of the township we're currently sitting in, Keter finds a disused millhouse and Calls Mer'Karas to him.
She appears, all smug and calm, while I berate the living shit out of her. She waits until I'm done and asks if I'm finished.
Then she proffers me a sword. I'm awestruck. I finally got to level Keter up (DM won't let us level up unless we're in a taint-free town, a-la Demon's Souls) and he's got Monkey Grip now.
This is a Large Vorpal Blood-iron Falchion +1. I offer all of my income for it and she says it's not enough.
I have to sacrifice another good being.

Mer'Karas explains that this order has come from Dispater Himself. I have fought the taint and the Chaos well, and I have proven worthy of His patronage in all actions, but the ommision of one action leads me earn his mistrust.
I have still been letting Good people survive. I know in my burning heart what must be done.
"Then the Bard will die. He is the only one who knows as much as I about what is plaguing these lands. He has no doubt noticed my ascendance and he is far from accepting. I will destroy him, and his riches will be stripped from his holdings and given to pay the rest of this blade's price. But for now, GIVE ME THAT SWORD!"
    Mer'Karas does.

Do as you guys wish. I'll do mine. At least there's been no fur.

Keter is given the Falchion and a warning from Mer'Karas.
"Look at what these people really are. You need to kill your friend in public."
So I pay close attention to everything when I return to town, taking 20 on both perception AND Sense motive.
41 and 41, in total. I discover that, through the Erinyes's abilities of truesight, the majority of the townsfolk are the same Demonfey aberrations we were harried by in the wastes.
    FUCK!

I'm lucky I have my helm on because otherwise I'd be very conspicuous now as I stand, slack-jawed in the street. Now I have renewed purpose as I stride faster than I've moved in most of a year toward the Elder's hall.
This was the Bard's player's last session amongst us, by the way. He wanted to go out with a good deed that helped us all, and none of us wanted to begrudge him that.
But here he was, telling the Demonfey (known as Mochtahr) about the Mochtahr menace in the wastes.
I continued striding toward him, and shouted "YOU'D DAMN US ALL FOR A PAT ON THE BACK? NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE YOUR TALES. THE DRUID IS POLLUTED IN THE WASTES AND THAT'S ALL YOU THINK OF!" As I drew my new blade, impressive as it was.
Intimidated, the Bard casts remove curse simpering that "He's not himself, I hear he was possessed in the wastes and is now evil." to the 'elders'.
I've now gained 27HP and no more pain. I still destroy him, hefting the new Falchion high above my head, I bring him down in one descending strike as he stands helpless, split down the middle.

The DM flips, the Bard's player flips. The Ranger's player laughs, and the Druid's player sulks.
    I look determined.
Keter says "That man went mad a long time ago in the tundra. His removal of my so-called 'possession' hasn't changed me in the slightest, so I am able to say I am pure, Elders. My blade was the altar of justice upon which he was smote."
    Diplomacy = passed.
"His ramblings have been the topic of much discussion between myself and the others. His mind has snapped under the pressure of our efforts to cure this plague. Good day."

The Bard's player is about to start and I say 'look, the enemies were the elders of the town, and they were rife through the townspeople themselves. I think by killing you and making you look like a fool, the rest of the group has been saved.'
I felt bad, but when a character is compelled to do something... I made my apologies and so on, and he watched the rest of the session.

Keter continues to move in. He hears Mer'Karas speak to him, telling him that the Druid has embraced the taint and is using it to be a Taint-mancer.
    Next on my list: Druid...

So Keter marches up to the other two in the party, the Ranger looks at me with fear in his eyes and I know why, but it's time to lay down the law...ful evil.
I glower at him through the helm, and heft my Falchion. The Ranger whimpers and I pick him up by hooking the blade onto his clothing. He gets the point and follows me as I leave, the Druid follows, evil glee brimming from the player's face as he thinks the Ranger's about to die. He, as the player, is a bit of a THAT GUY (I know, I know... killing a good guy's character last session with the group, I'm not innocent) and has a thing against the Ranger IRL.

I take them both to the disused non-meme.
The Ranger's pleading for his life, and the Druid's quiet, wanting to watch. Good. I raise the Falchion above my head as the Sobbing Ranger looks pathetic on his knees again, and swing it into the Druid, taking 10. Vorpal'd.
The Druid's player flips shit and the other players cheer.
Then begins the heavier shit. I use my smaller blades to vivisection the body, revealing the bloated tumors, pus-filled sacs, and vestigial ingrown limbs that are hidden within the ex-druid's body. I describe in detail where I cut the body with my blades, and the DM describes in gruesome detail what is found. Then, Mer'Karas appears. Unbidden.
Apparently, the actions I have done against the taint (which was Mammon's doing, I think) has helped Dispater's cause in a power play, and the killing of 2 friends for the Iron Duke's favour has lent Mer'Karas a boon to better help me. So we've got an Erinyes NPC with 6 levels of Cleric of Dispater (Domains, Evil & Protection).

Mer'Karas jabs the heart with her Estoc (new sword), and it peels open into 3 even parts, like a banana (I dunno, magic, epicness, some shit). She gives me one piece, and we force the Ranger to eat one.
He groans at the idea, but believes it to be worth living.
When we're done, Keter tells the Ranger; "I was never going to kill you. I knew you betrayed my trust, but I predicted that you would, and in doing so, YOU would make the Scholar feel compelled to speak to the elders, YOU would give him the means to think he could exorcise me, YOU... you would allow me to have a reasonable means to still look like a good man when I am not. And you have made ME the only one who knows what the Scholar and I shared." I hold aloft the codex of the beasts the Bard and I had been compiling all this time.
"Your betrayal is paid off by itself. You are now bound to ally with me, and your sharing the heart of that" - spits on the Druid's corpse - "filthy bastard has made you an accomplice to my deeds!"
I offer my hand to the Ranger.
    ...
    "So, friends?"

The Bard says that it was an epic final session with us and leaves, and the Druid's player goes off into a silent ragesulk and makes a new character... muttering something none too charitable, no doubt.
The Ranger High-5s and even the DM by now has started getting into the spirit of Keter's character.

So the Ranger asks why I killed the Druid and the Bard. I chuckle.
"The less you know, the better for you." I reply, hazarding to stroke Mer'Karas's hair.
"Suffice it to say, this town is soon to be tainted. We need to leave. Gather up whatever you can and be ready for a" pause "LONG stay in the tundra."

The Ranger (named Ivan van-Vonvonssonsson) nods and makes to scramble out the door, but I stop him by raising my hand. "You've nothing to fear from me. Your attempt to betray me has only given me gain. Any combat you bring to me will be another victory for me. But you have 1 day before we leave." And then I let him go.
The next session comes up and the Druid's player has made some form of weird-ass Truenamer Paladin.
All Lawful Good and acting like his shit don't stink and his farts don't squeak. Cut to Ivan getting his sit together in the local Inn, looking over his shoulder at Keter, who once again has adopted the sitting statue role. Back to the wall, and this time, the Erinyes-gifted True-sight of taking 20 on Sense motive and Perception, he sees that nearly all of the barflies are Mochtahr. His knowlede (the planes), and the Codex implies there must be a sort of Fey glamour at work here on them to make them seem normal. Keter dislikes.

Then in comes the Paladin, the Player got that look of wanting to be all secret about his revenge plan on his face. He strikes up a conversation with Ivan, introduces himself, and says that we've got quite the name for ourselves, and he'd like to join us in the good fight yada yada yada.

So the Truenamer Paladin tells us he's going to join our party, he has this plan to heal the spoilt earth, and we would be greatly appreciated if we could help.
Keter notices this. Some unknown Paladin just arrives and tells the Ivan, the Famous Ranger, that it would benefit IVAN to be posted to the PALADIN'S party. Paranoia kicks in and he watches intently. The Paladin's calling himself... wait, HERSELF, Natasha.
Ivan's talking rather amicably with the Paladin but then Natasha's player gives me his look again and says "I stride over to Keter."
... Nothing too suss, I'm famous. I'm the great and mighty Dragon knight, Keter.

"OOy zllEP-moc SIthis doG Athh" (The God Sithis compells you backwards... our homebrew utterance to freeze people in place). I'm now paralysed and rooted to the spot. I can't even move my eyes.

Vorpal only beheads on natural 20's, not all critical threats.
You may never take a 10 on an attack against an unwilling target, regardless of if they're aware.
You may not roll Sense Motive, Diplomacy, Bluff, or Intimidate to coerce other player characters.
    >That man went mad a long time ago in the tundra. His removal of my so-called 'possession' hasn't changed me in the slightest, so I am able to say I am pure, Elders. My blade was the altar of justice upon which he was smote.
    Bluff, not Diplomacy

That's all I really noticed. None of those were huge enough to destroy the story, you could easily have gotten around all that. Just little things that I noticed. There may have been other things.

I'm also completely in the dark on how you got your crit range down to 9. Unless Iron Warrior adds 5 to your critical threat range and then the feat doubles that, which I kinda doubt, but is possible. Even then it would be 10 and not 9, unless you received another crit range increase from Iron Warrior, which would make it 8, not 9.

Well, man. I'm sorry, ok? I'm sorry I got dragged into a revenge. I'm not enjoying that I'm being a semi-THAT kind of GUY, but when a player makes a character explicitly to fuck yours over... you don't feel good about it.
    Anyway, storytime.

So the Paladin is borne aloft by Mer'Karas. Cursing all the way, he reverse-utters the Flight utterance on her and she begins plummeting, then in the last turn before the landing, uses it again but normal to give himself flight while Mer-Karas falls.
    My paralysis ends.
I Power attack to +10 damage with a throwing axe and maximise Combat reflexes. Obviously this Paladin wants me dead. I pick my Falchion up and go total defence and Karmic strike.
The Paladin charges. Poor fool, he's used up all of his smites and Utterances (I think) and now gets his Holy avenger out.

    Hey yeah, we ARE getting our dicks out and getting a ruler! ಠ_ಠ;
He charges me despite it being my thing that charging enemies die. I miss. SHIT!
    He misses. "SHIT!"
My turn, Miss, miss, hit, miss. Fuck. Don't do nearly enough damage.
Mer'Karas's turn, (Ivan came running when he saw the flying paladin shouting weird shit, but hasn't the time to do anything yet) Bestow curse. Paladin's mute.
Paladin's player laughs a bad laugh. Spends a turn casting remove curse "I figured people'd try to do that."
My turn. Full expertise, no power attack, trip.
He falls and I hold the blade of insta-kill above his neck.

Ah, well, we do play it like that at times. IRL, you sometimes get that guy who you hang with, and he likes to lean on you to make you do things his way... I call that Intimidate against the party.
    Things like that.
But yeah, we discovered the taking 10 was bad AFTER this campaign ended...
    And with vorpal?
The DM didn't know what he said when he said "Vorpal will do its thing on all criticals. I figure it's expensive enough to merit that."

Also, the same rule that lets my swords be 60% critical gives me a +2 divine bonus to hit and damage.

    Anyway, CONTINUAN!

The character looks on at me angrily but silent for a bit. The player says the look he gives me is at once daning and daring my character. Almost like he WANTS me to kill him, to prove my evil.
"No one will believe you, Paladin. You can either accept that we have a common enemy, or I can kill you now."
More damning silence, perception tells me he's reaching for his Holy avenger.
"Keep giving me that look and I'll have Mer'Karas take you to Hell and leave you there. Look away from me, right now, and we can begin to quietly hate one another."

Time passes. Mer'Karas is finally able to get back up and limp to the Paladin, ready to do what I wish her to.
More time passes. Paladin's player scowls at me as I maintain the dramatic pose, sword pointed to the ground and staring at the imaginary dude at my mercy. I see his glare, but I'm hamming it up, as I love to do.
Paladin looks away, I pull back my blade.
"We have more important things to do here."

After this, the Paladin tries to christfag at me, attempts at converting me aplenty. We stay in the wastes.
By now, the Mochtahr are slowly taking over the countryside, we thwart them but have no idea where they're coming from. Slowly but surely the blightstones are being taken down, and the tainted cities are being purified.
Dispater may be an Archduke of Hell, but he's not a fan of Mammon's work getting the better of his.
Mer'Karas is slowly getting used to the material plane and is getting to be the awesome waifu-figure an Erinyes can be.

    Also, congrats on quints.

Keter becomes venerated as the greatest hero in the Wastes, truly incorruptible 'as a Paladin of his stature should be', and a symbol of hope for the people. Keter, Mer'Karas, Ivan van-Vonvonssonsson, and Natasha (referred to as 'he' because the player's male, sorry guys. That'll be fixed now.) are champions. By now, despite the Mochtahr infiltrating society and breeding out the normal folk and killing armies and razing smaller towns... we're going through great efforts to stop this, and there are ever and always new demon-beasts appearing. Some of the people who have been stranded in the wastes have become a superstitious title known as "Zjhieral", meaning the soulless.

Ivan's getting more used to my evil ways. I do the evils I do, sure. But it's always deliberate and careful. And for a cause.
Natahsa? She's still angry and sullen, but she still tries to convert me. I keep her 'peaceful' (peacefully threat-making) by acting like I give a shit, then 'relapsing' over certain things. She's also got a thing against Mer'Karas... something about being a FALLEN Angel, I guess.

We meet the Zhieral at some stage. They fight the Mochtahr, and the Mochtahr fear them well enough, but they've got a NASTY thing about them. They're Psionic. DM loves different fonts of power being used as different, so the Psionics\Magic transparency isn't in place. My SR19, dwindling in usefulness as it is, is now completely useless. Ah, well.
They've got this feat the DM knocked up where they don't ever learn powers, but they can still get power points from Race, feats, items, and shit. No powers or Psi-likes, but they get to use Deep crystal, Psionic items (at -5 to the roll), and Mind blades.
The benefit to crippling their Psionic potential is thatthey can take the anti-psionic feats as well as psionic feats.
And there's another one that psionically uses themselves to create a fear aura.
They're being played like CULEXII, MAN!

If I view this from the perspective of playing through it as a campaign, I'm like...hurt. Worried.
I dunno, I think OP would be fun to play with, but something about this particular campaign makes me feel really really really bad for the Ranger, for example.
Not that it wouldn't be fun, just that I don't imagine it's what he had in mind. S'all.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)08:17 No.14866820
So Keter turns to the Ranger to help him get his Codicing on again. The two of them writing everything they can about the myriad monsters in the wastes. But a seperate book for the sapient ones, the Zjhieral and Mochtahr.
We put our minds to use, Mer'Karas asks we don't codex anything on Devils and I grudgingly accept, content to just remember that info myself.

We see trends though. When we destroy a blightstone, more Zjhieral appear.
It's like the damn taint is holding the Zhieral back or something, but the Mochtahr are trying to spread the taint.
    >shitgetscomplex.jpg
We do alright. Periodic returns to civilisation grants us another 3 levels, now we've hit epic territory, and the DM laughs in a sinister way.
Keter is Fighter 10, Iron Disciple 10, Crusader 1.
Natasha Borisovic is Paladin 16, Truenamer 5.
    Ivan van-Vonvonssonsson is Ranger 14, Rogue 7.
    Mer'Karas is Erinyes 9, Cleric 9, Monk 3.

I see where you're going with it and assuming the ranger doesn't do shit could mean two ways.

One: he's enjoying the current state of affairs and/or doesnt give a flying fuck about consequences

Two: he's scared shitless, and dares not do anything against OP.

    In case 1: case solved
Case 2 is trickier. You might say that it's a DM's task to make everyone feel good in a campaign. Well I do not think that a DM should just do all the work so that the players can enjoy themselves. They should fucking stand up for themselves, fight for their moments. (implying of course the DM is unbiased enough to provide the ranger a chance to break free. Getting together with the paladin with some help outside: granted they could take this mofo down together with his pet. Would be an epic conclusion.)

    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)08:56 No.14866998
So we get news that the Mochtahr are amassing an army of their elite overt warriors, and the infiltration of this last great city, a bastion of order and civilisation, was sufficient to kill everyone in it that was neither tainted nor Mochtahr.
Natasha began talks with the church that housed her order of the holy word. Urging that they requisition all battle-priests and Paladins they could. Everyone who could be drafted into the war against the Demonfey was needed. Ivan disappeared off the face of the map in search for the various macGuffins and doodads he’d need for the siege, Mer’Karas went back to hell for a while, I was able to summon 1d4 Erinyes a day anyway, I was fine.
All I did? Bought myself a Starmilk Chain shirt (+4, Etherealness, Fortified), and put it on under my Demon armour (DAMN THE PENALTIES! I WON’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THEM IN THE FIGHT!)
Load up on a Starmilk Rapier, Spell-storing ring with 1 charge of Timestop, Amulet of protection +3, and reloaded my throwing axes.
My actions were then to announce loudly in the city square every 2 hours, for a week, that when the Mochtahr arrive in the city, I am killing EVERYONE. Friend or foe. Only if I need you for my own survival will you live, and only for that long. That the Mochtahr can weave illusions to be anyone, and to stymie the risk of a knife going into my back, I will treat them all as if they were the Mochtahr.

People didn’t believe me until I brandished my weapons the day they were due to arrive and killed the first person I could tell was a Mochtahr.

    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)09:02 No.14867023
The others had returned by that day. Ivan and Natasha were both fighting alongside the wall defenders, killing the Mochtahr that were hidden amongst the ranks. Keter waited.
Mer’Karas summoned herself forth behind the dozen or so Dragon riders and disrupted their formation, and drinking the blood of the Dragons after purifying them. Keter waited.
The people were milling around Keter, waiting for him to begin the slaughter, still standing there in disbelief that one of their greatest heroes would turn on them all so. Keter waited.
The Mochtahr armies met the wall, and Mer’Karas missive Keter that they had done so. Keter slowly, ponderously, stepped from his perch at the top of the city keep’s stairwell down to the main gate.

His movement made one Mochtahr panic, break illusion and charge him. Fool. He was cut down in no time at all. Keter kept walking. Then immediately all of the thronged public broke into a run, either from him or to kill him. Those that ran FROM him were to be spared, they could help keep the Mochtahr’s razing attempts at bay. Those that ran TO him?

5 attacks of opportunity at each turn, only so many could reach him at once, so they were cut down. In my turn I sliced my way through 4 and walked slowly. Next turn, the 1st 5 hits were punished severely and my DR kept me from the worst of the blows. This repeated for about 10 turns. I was starting to feel the pinch, but I was ok.

One of the Dragon riders managed to breach the wall and recognised me from their own intelligence network. The other 2 mortals were at least inconspicuous, I was a walking figurehead. It charged at me.
    >> <E!_Mance> !PmqM6b1Vqg 05/09/11(Mon)09:15 No.14867074
By then I had invested in Quick-draw, we were level 24, it's all gonna be awesome.
Quickly re-sheath the falchion, draw the grappling hook, ranged grapple attempt somehow passes, YES! Latch on to swooping dragon and make my way up the chain (not rope, chain can be iron) until I can get some punches into the Dragon's underbelly as it flies around tainting things.
It perches soon afterwards, and I get up onto its back and draw my Falchion, fight defensively, and in my next turn the dragon and its rider are dead.

I leap from its perch on a 3-story roof, soak the damage and begin moving again.
The DM gives us all a separate BBEG.
Mer'Karas is just thrown a unique Half-fiend Mochtahr Psion/Monk to duke it out with in the skies.
    Ivan gets a Monk/Shadowcaster
    Natasha gets a Sorc/Psion/Elocator
    I get a mounted Fighter/Cavalier.
    It's so on.

The BBEG charges me, stupid fool. My AoO fails thanks to a ride check! WHAT?
Sunder attack with full power attack made against me. My Demon armour is damaged. AoO FOR the mount, kill mount. What now, bitch?
My turn is spent full-attacking someone like me, and the thing is, his armour is fully fortified, so my critical hit BS won't work.
Something stirs in Keter that has, for years, lied forgotten.
    Rage.

Every strike I make in my next turn is an Iron Hews attack, my stronger ones first, Every hit I make is also a Crusader's smite (Extra smites feat FTW) and I roar incoherently as I hack into this foul perversion of everything I hold praise for.

The damage I deal is horrific, but it keeps on laughing at my attempts.
Its round: Quick-draws 4 +1 Dancing Dissolving burst Rapiers and Does a HP-trading bite to heal itself off of me, then 5' step and full attack with the Glaive. The Rapiers sunder attempt me and pierce my Demon armour to the point of it falling off of me.
It begins. We have discovered that Mochtahr suffer considerable damage with dispelling effects.
Timestop ring used (Yes, I've been upping my Use Magic device lately)

All of my spare time is spent full-attacking with a rapier and Axe, but one last attack in the rest of my real turn is a trip attempt with the Falchion again. Successful.
The enemy is crippled by his damage, and he is prone. To hell with fortification. I pin him down using my hand axes and roar a tribute to Dispater.

I attempt to pin him all the while, taking damage from time to time by a draining attack.

It's a bloody and tiring exchange, but I'm standing above them and finally tire of this shit and rusting grasp his armour. Suddenly they are vulnerable. They spring up and my AoO misses, the BBEG is about to blast me with a glaive flurry when I activate etherealness in my Chain shirt.
In my ethereal turns down my best healing potion.
Cast Iron body (10th level Iron Disciple 1/day)
Cast Stoneskin (8th level Iron Disciple 1/day)
Summon 1d4 Erinyes (9th level Iron Disciple 1/day)
Ready my Falchion and as 2 Erinyes rope-lash the BBEG to the ground I leave my ethereal state.
Last smite of the day, Coup-de-grace.

I plunged my sword into the BBEG's exposed heart that the very stone beneath him split for meters. I was, again, a walking pillar of unbreakable steel. This time, I had no encumberance, no hindrance... I was free to unleash hell.
I left my foe there, Falchion still in his heart, plundered his Glaive and took the Starmilk Rapier in the other hand.
I ran headlong into the battle at the gate. The gate had been breached and Mocthar were assailing what few defenders were left.

The last fray was tremendous. I ran like I never could before, I slashed, stabbed, and maneuvered like a man possessed. And I had 2 furies by my side the whole time. All 4 of us were there again, United through our many difference by the common hatred we felt for this degenerate race.

The battle was over when we 4 joined it. There was nothing the Mochtahr could do against our hard-earned knowledge of their workings.

But, when the dust cleared, I was there, standing again, silent and still. A statue of a man, back to a wall as the effects of my fortifications wore off.

Ivan had taken a lot of taint in the last battle. The Mochtahr were gone, and the taint they spread was all but cleansed from the land. All that was left was killing off the Zjhieral and that was only a matter of time.
Then Ivan van-Vonvonssonsson had fallen to the enemy we had worked so much to overcome.
He had a slight taint score for a while now, ever since before the Druid, he had some.
But in the last several levels, it had gained some, and in this battle he was riddled beyond cleansing.
Mer'Karas said to cast purify on him now would kill him as he is mostly corrupted flesh by now.

Ivan sputtered as he coughed up blood, thick lumps of black nastiness all throughout it.
"Don't worry about me. I made a difference."
    ...

Again, DM was a fool, we were fools.
    Operative word, WAS\WERE.
    Thanks for the compliment, though.

    LAST POST
Keter looks at Ker'Maras. A look fraught with appeal in the eyes, but stoic and callous as always in the face.
Natasha sees the blood and 2+2=4. So she orders 2 other Paladins to hold Ivan down. as she prepares to cure disease.
"I know this will kill him at this stage, but he is NOT going to spread the taint here. NOT HERE!" She wails.
Natasha kills Ivan, he is helpless and not even trying to put up a fight.
Keter begins stepping to her to exact vengeance, but she stops him with the utterance. She's researched save DC increases and has done her homework. I'm frozen.
"And you! You had your uses, but now you're just a diabolist seeking nothing but plunder and death! You may have helped me save the nation from the taint, but you are NO ally of our people! For that, you die!"

Mer'Karas lashes Natasha and casts Blasphemy, Keter dispatches the remaining paladins and watches as Mer'Karas lifts Natasha high into the air, Curses her thrice with muteness, casts zone of silence, throws her as high as she can and watches her fall.
Keter hefts the now pure body of Ivan and leaves the saved but much emptier city to its new life.
When they retreated to safety, Mer'Karas ressurected Ivan, and the three of them went off to cleanse the wastes for Dispater's grand schemes.

Natasha's player demanded that she not die either, that anything is preferable. So the DM made her into a crippled woman. Not disabled, but her physical stats were penalised by 3 each permanently, and she was also unable to speak again. Natasha's player got to reselect her Truenamer levels, but she now stays cloistered away, a mute reminder of what Keter and, bye extension, Dispater can do.

The Falchion remains in the city street where it was plunged. No-one dares touch the reminder of the man who at once saved and destroyed the city.
Occasionally, to this day, that one city has a large man standing just outside effective archery range. He resembles a statue of a draconic warrior, with his hands just resting on the handle of a massive Falchion.

Occasionally he has 2-5 scantily clad fallen angels reclining at his feet.

I take it the figure on the left in that picture there is pretty close to Keter, hm?

Still, very cool story from a narrative standpoint. Wish I could get into more story-driven games even if your DM seems like he could be kind of dickish.

Well, this DM just didn't like the way Keter was going about being a big damn hero.

The other 'extreme' characters have all had massively dickish DMs. To the point that they may have been a penis that cast disguise self.
They ended in tears for the DM though, as when a DM decides to make his mission to stomp on the hopes, dreams, and loves of my character, I make it my mission to end the world. And I've been pretty decent at it, in my experience.

It's usually just counter-dickery. Except that GMs always overdo it. One of my last characters died several times and had to make himself new arms. And a new face.

One could say he deserved that, caring more about money than anything else [To the point that he betrayed the party three times, and faked betrayal two times - not to mention his tendency to switch allegiances during a job when the other side gave him a better offer. Even when the rest of the party didn't agree. Or wasn't there.]

Still, going far enough to make me create a special "Resurrection/Reincarnation Fund" was a bit of a dick move on the DMs part as well.

The ranger had more spells, dipshit. Everything you had was also magical. Don't try to sugarcoat things. You had a radical story and all, but you were a fucking shithead in that game and it was pretty much nothing but the basest form of self-entitled wish fulfillment. Nowhere did I say I got them killed. I betrayed them. You can betray someone without having them die just fine. Which is exactly what I did. Sure, they had to fight they way out of a prison, but they got some cool stuff from that, so everyone was happy.

    Eh, they did.
Thing is, we all enjoyed that campaign. Even the Paladin only looks back at that with a chuckle. We all did some shit, it was fun.

But you see, myself and the DM of that campaign (when he's playing, that is) play the most ambitious characters in the whole gaming circle around here.
Once, the other guy found a way to make his character into a God, and did so.
The others are fine with what they do. The two of us actually have taken the backseat before, and nothing got done in the campaign. It was all a bunch of "Well I don't really mind what happens. Ummm. I go to the pub." from the beginning to the end of one driven by them.
And I am NOT SAYING THAT'S BAD!
It's just not as ambitious as our characters are, so we tend to look like show-stealers.

Amongst our group, Myself and Kyle are the two extremely opportunistic ones.
I'm sorry that an epic-level Fighter-based character was laden with magic items while the other characters were, too. I really do apologise if my reply had offended.

It was never my intent to step on people's toes.

Ok, so the highlights of Jackie's existance (not in any particular order)

    >Single-handedly discovering the truth behind a pedo father and a girl Druid who ran off to the Alice with some Thri-kreen.

    >Discovered the truth of who's in charge of the local vampire aristocracy.

    >Saved the day. Many times.

    >Proved that he is utterly fearless, by doing the single scariest thing ever according to anyone else in and out of character.

    >Made a Psicrystal that could manifest a mind blade of its own.

    >Infiltrated many an organisation and guarded complex.

    >Killed a half-illithid in a mindwar.

    More? Ok.
What he lived with, and who played them.
Pete: Pete the Juggalo, blessed by Khorne, violence just followed him around.
Kyle: Didn't want to play the campaign and went all Kirin, a supposedly Japanese albino Dorf-like Werewolf Druid race... At DM Kai's urging.
Grace: Fasha the Tiefling, she just wanted to relax.
Lewis: The guy on the couch, had amazing drug tolerance, so Jackie groomed him to be an Eversor Assassin of sorts.
Me: Jackie. Psionic Martial Rogue with fear-based and darkness-based sidelong abilities.
    Kai (DM):
    >Urgon - Gentlemanly half-orc with tribal everything and a battered old Greatsword. Was a Psion.
    >Karen - Shadowcaster\\Bard\\Warlock Tiefling.
    >Jake - Surfie Paladin of Odin. Had a lot of clerical and ranger-ey spells. Also pact magic and strength. Everyone loved him.
    >Sarah - Psionic Mystic Theurge from word go with control over life and death with everything she touched.
