The year was 1995, but no longer! Having regained her time-slowing powers, teenage mutant Aino Virta finds herself in the future year 2099, in a world where Four Freedoms Plaza is owned not by the Fantastic Four but by a megacorporation called Stark-Fujikawa! Wanted by agents of a rival megacorp, the for-profit police force known as the Public Eye, fifteen-year old Tachyon finds herself an uneasy employee of Stark-Fujikawa, promised shelter and security in return for the use of her mutant power!

"And here is the virtual reality display. Your suite has over fifty thousand vids of all types, even ones from the 20th century," explains your guide, a translucent hologram that approximates the yellow-hued form of Tom Baker. "You know, I do have over four hundred appearances and personality profiles. Are you positive you want me to stay in this form, Miss Martha? I don't understand the appeal of it."

In the hour since you were escorted to this luxurious sweet to "freshen up" you have seen wonders that your guide treats as commonplace, and despite the fact that the year 2099 seems to have sensors that can detect your power, biometric scanners on streetside computers that can instantly tell you're not in the system, and at least one cyborg deputy-slash-HR-guy, they still seem to believe the lie that you are Martha, a mutant "downtowner" - someone living off the grid in the lawless realm below the skyscrapers - and not a student born more than a hundred years ago!

While your holographic manservant opens the mechanized wardrobe doors and shows you a choice selection of the year's best fashions, your attention is drawn to a beeping slot on the wall. "Your card has arrived, Miss Martha," the Doctor informs you, "although for security's sake most people have their credit ID implanted. Many places no longer have card readers, and even though your biometric signature is on file I would hate for you to find yourself inconvenienced."

Picking up the flat gold card emblazoned with your picture to inspect it, a video screen flashes with the message INCOMING CALL FROM HIKARU-SAMA - and you recognize the name as the man you met only an hour ago, the man who introduced himself as the head of Stark-Fujikawa!

"Shall I connect you to him, Miss Martha?" the Doctor asks you.

    What's the plan, Aino?

"Ah, hello, Martha," Hikaru-Sama says, smiling broadly. "I trust you're finding your surroundings quite amiable?"

As the conversation turns to your power, the CEO tells you "While it is true that many simple-minded people regard the recent outbreak of mutants as a sign of dire things to come, I and those like me believe that all beings have a place in our society, human, mutant, or otherwise."

As he leans back in his chair and settles in comfortably he asks "Questions about the Heroic Age? I suppose as a mutant you'd naturally be curious about that time. Of course, we don't know much about it - so many records from that time are lost and incomplete. It's taken a long time to get where we are, considering how much was lost." As he says this, the Doctor fills the edges of the room with life-size holograms of Captain America and other costumed heroes battling strange and menacing beings, just out of Hikaru-Sama's view.

"And that, my dear Martha, is where you interest me," he says, leaning into the screen. "Among that which was lost was the secret of temporal manipulation."

    What now?

We can talk more as soon as you wish. Whenever you are ready to leave I'll have someone escort you to our research laboratory."

Once the call ends and you begin pressing the Doctor for details, a startling picture emerges - one that your new employer only hinted at!

"I'm terribly sorry, Miss Martha, but I just don't have any information about those people in my records," he says, snaking his holographic scarf out behind him. "Most of what we know of the Heroic Age comes from still images, and second-hand information. All we *do* know is that sometime around the beginning of the twenty-first century marked the end of the age, and after that most of the so-called superheroes disappeared from records."

Despite having a catalog of knowledge concerning every bit of trivia one could hope for, the holographic Doctor has a maddeningly limited knowledge of the events surrounding your own time!

"If you don't see anything you approve of in there," he says as you toss the purple top onto the closet floor, "this suite is equipped with a personal UMF fabricator, and your gold card status easily allows you to afford anything it makes."

You mentioned "mutants" before...what did you mean by that? /coypuzzlementface/
    - Why, individuals empowered with superhuman abilities such as yourself. Sometimes feared and shunned, regrettably. In the Heroic Age some humans gained access, if only temporary, to some of these powers through complex mechanisms. Our founder -Tony Stark- was one such person. If we were able to understand this Power of yours...
-Then you could retrofit your suits to better combat it, or perhaps even integrate it to your powersuits giving your company a tremendous boost against their competitors! Question is; what would happen to me as soon as my "unique exotic flavor" is replicated through means mechanical? Would I be like the carcass of a lemon, bereft of all it's juice?
    -Lemon?
-Never mind that. What would you have me do? stay in this golden cage as your top researchers analyse my body and genetic code, in the hopes of mastering this Gift? I'd like a bit of more...freedom, and have a plan which may fits both our needs. (cont.)

I've been wondering, does Stark-Fuji still make some of these suits? I find the idea of a power suit, with a couple of energy repulsors, rocket boots, visual scanners, photosynthetic cells to slowly recharge, some small defensive systems, and optimized for travel inside Tychon fields - which seens you livefeed about me and my powers so your scientist have live data on this subject- to be a quite a promosing partnersip, don't you think? "Current events it is, then," the Doctor says, waving a hand and bringing up a 3-D display of a man dressed in a red cape and a winged helmet. "A pair of Thorites were arrested in the bombing of a Docs in a Box clinic this morning. A group of them has gathered outside the Public Eye building where they are being held." Just as he finishes saying that the video cuts away, as a Public Eye with a truncheon brings it down on one of the men dressed in costume.

"A prominent vidshow host has come out with a new theory that the resurgence of so-called "hero cults" is a reaction to the unreliability of high-quality synth-vids," he says, as the image changes. "I know you have shown an interest in a similar concept."

Waving him off, you inquire about a better arrangement of clothing - something he is only too happy to provide!

As you leave the suite, swathed in pouches and high-tech equipment, a tall, broad-shouldered man in a Stark-Fujikawa jacket and boots stands waiting in the hallway. "Ah, Martha, you look wonderfully refreshed," Hikaru-Sama says, greeting you as the thick rounded doors to the laboratory slide open and you enter, clad in your blue and white UMF suit and its accompanying pouches. Your escort leaves you and disappears behind the closing doors as a pair of technicians in shiny reflective labcoats approach the CEO. "These are our techs, Julian and Turnbull. They'd like to get started with some simple calibrations."

"How do you do, miss," one of the techs says, greeting you in a friendly manner. "I understand you have a sort of control over the hypothetical tachyon field. Let's-"

"-Oh, my," he says a moment later, as the device in his hand registers an asynchronicity, the result of your first demonstration! "Perhaps we ought to move on to more complex matters."

Despite your young age and presence in a future some hundred-odd years ahead of your own time, it seems that your limited understanding of the timestream puts you roughly on par with these experts! Over the next few panels you introduce what you can remember from your extra-credit work and your meeting with Reed Richards, supplying just enough to keep them interested in you!

"A powered exoskeleton, you say?" Turnbull asks, as you describe a hypothetical method of manipulating the tachyon field around you to deliver a hypersonic blow. "It's possible - we could modify one of our light mining powersuits to simulate the same frequency that you create..."

Hikaru-Sama tells you, spreading his arms magnanimously as you lay your arm in the open half-shell of a piece of powered mining armor while Julian reconfigures its impulse emitter. Beside you, Turnbull operates a device suspended from the ceiling by a thin rod and a series of coiled cables, while the CEO continues.

"As a rising star in this company, your future is assured as long as you remain loyal to us. If everything you say comes true, then you will be at the vanguard of our temporal agents, and everything you wish will be given to you, least of all black-card status!"

"OK, we're ready to test it out," Julian says, as the chestplate of the armored suit closes over your torso. "Let's give this baby a whirl!"

So, we should start on trying to recreate that. But see if we can take their mining suit and slim it down, integrate it with our new UMF suit. You remember when you first came to the United States you saw Iron Man on television, and while the powered armor you wear doesn't look exactly like his, the resemblance is uncanny enough to make you smile. Instead of his red-and-gold design, yours is mostly grey, but with enough symmetrical patches of blue and white to match your new UMF suit underneath. Despite its strength and weight the armor is surprisingly light, thanks to the powered servos, and thanks to its ability to vary its fitting it quickly draws itself up snugly around you!

"The suit has a strength of roughly one hundred times normal human strength, good for lifting heavy rocks after collapses as well as general toil, but the controls are delicate enough to pick up eggs without cracking them," the tech explains.

As you walk around the room, several inches taller but thanks to its amazing internal controls no more awkwardly than you would be in a set of street clothes, Julian taps the clipboard-like computer slate in his hands with a stylus and says "Tachyon field seems to be perfectly in sync with your own. Everything is working very well so far."

"Now, this is a simple steel block," Turnbull says, lowering a thick metal slab into the lab to rest on a reinforced table. "Let's see what you can do with it. Stand back, please," he says to Hikaru-Sama, putting a pair of safety goggles over his eyes.

With a deep breath you raise one servo-driven fist and clench the blue-and-white metallic fingers together, drawing it up in front of your face and sighting beyond it to the metal block. As your consciousness expands to an awareness of the timestream around you, the armored fist plunges forward, drawn out of the bubble of realtime surrounding you just as you press the tachyon field inward, driving it forward at nearly impossible speeds!

And try to slim down the armor, make it less conspicuous. A UMF covering to make it look like a jacket or long coat?

"Hmm, a hard-worker. I am glad you came to us, Martha," Hikaru-Sama says as you take over one of the large holographic writing boards - still clad in the armored mining suit - and begin prompting it to display what their computer banks have recorded about temporal physics. "I understand your reservations about this being used for 'time-traveling'," he continues, emphasizing the phrase, "and I share your concern."

"I have an important meeting in the morning, so I must depart, but I leave you to your own devices. Anything you wish will be provided for you, within reason, of course," Hikaru-Sama says, taking his leave. "Goodnight, Martha."

Between your wrist-mounted computer and the intuitive interface you are able to give the scientists some ideas, but no more... breakthroughs - at least for the time being.

" *Yawn* I'm beat!" Julian says, several hours later as they finish recording a full series of your tachyon field control. With the suit amplifying your own abilities you find you can hold back the timestream with less effort than it normally takes!

"Huh, Thor? Sure, I can tell you about him. He's the god of thunder. He was the strongest of the superheroes back in the Heroic Age, and when he returns it'll usher in the new golden age."

"You don't really believe any of that junk, do you?" Turnbull says, disengaging a heads-up display panel from in front of his face and turning to look at the two of you.

"Well, not the magic parts, but they really did exist!" Julian proclaims.

"Keep talking like that and your career's gonna end up the same place Thor did," Turnbull says dryly as he stands up and stretches. "Oh, shock, we've been here so late I missed the fight tonight!," he says, glancing at a screen. "I heard they got a mutroid from Hellrock to fight their house contender!"

"Yeah, Martha, time to call it a night," Julian agrees. "We can pick up here in the morning."

As the two of them shrug off their reflective labcoats and exit, you see your escort from hours earlier standing outside the door!

"Ready to go back home, miss?" he asks. "Oh, uh, I don't think you're allowed to leave the lab with that on," he says, noticing your power armor.

With the ghost of an idea in your head, you climb into the modified mining suit and seal its form-fitting metallic plates over you, feeling its energy signature attuned to your own, and begin creating a small bubble of slowed time, using one of the detection instruments you saw Julian using before. Once it springs into existence you expand it to surround yourself, giving you a moment to try and examine the powered suit you wear. Despite a keen mind for some scientific pursuits, you quickly realize you're out of your league trying to do more than operate this impressive apparatus, and dejectedly let your field drop back to realtime and turn your attention to reconstructing the device you helped Reed Richards create - a device of which the construction was largely Richards' doing.

As you struggle through the unfamiliar steps that lie beyond your limited grasp of temporal physics, you realize just how long Karl has been gone, and your mind - worried by all the strange and terrifying things you've seen and times you've been since you woke up - begins to imagine menace beyond the door! Quickly, aided by the suit's amazing strength, you leap toward the door and jab the button to open it -

    - And surprise Karl into almost dropping the tray of steaming soup bowls he's carrying!

"Oh, shock, you scared the life out of me!" he says as he re-balances the tray and pushes past you to set it down on an empty lab table. "Sorry I took so long, I bumped into a guy I used to be on the day shift with. Say, what's all this, anyway?" he asks, pointing between the mining suit and the glowing boards. "Are you from some genius creche or something?"

    What now?

The question, then, is whether he acted for the greater good in the best possible way.
Whatever he was trying to stop, couldn't be done through just talking - if Mr. Fantastic deemed it necessary to attack us to stop it, it was necessary.

"It used to be pretty bad," Karl says, spooning up the last of his soup as the two of you sit watching the readout on the screen. "Right before the Pollution Wars there was garbage and nuclear waste everywhere. Then the corporations took over, and got it all cleaned up. Now everything's starting to get clean again, and pollution is a thing of the past."

"Oh, I'm not a Thorite," he says, watching you as you get back to work. "Then again, some downtowners worship the whole lot of them. Captain Avenger, the Human Submarine, Spider-Guy, you name it. I think most of the stuff they say about those people was just rumors, anyway. The people in that time were probably too primitive to know any better."

As the two of you talk, you notice one screen seemingly switch off - but as you turn your attention to it you notice that it still reads something:

    MASTERMOLD SEQUENCE RESTORED

"Are you done with your sou-" Karl begins, before your suit moves forward, oblivious to your command, and strikes him in the back of the head, knocking him to the floor in an unmoving heap!

As the suit pivots around, dragging you helplessly within its unyielding grip, a distorted face wavers and flickers, patch by patch, into view on one of the screens. Held prisoner in the powerful mining suit, you can only stare at its looming coalescing shape!

At first it looks almost human, but then it resolves itself into the visage of something both more and much less than human - something you've seen and feared before!

    A Sentinel!
