143 KB Quest For Change IV QuestFagGuy 05/19/11(Thu)16:11 No.14982301
Before you stands a skeletal giant seemingly composed of the shadow itself. Having just smashed John De’martel, the young paladin sworn to your cause, into a nearby column. He lies unresponsive, and you can see one of his arms bent at an odd angle.
The skeletal giant roars with laughter that seems to break into the minds of your companions, as well as your own. Pointing at you, the abomination shouts “You claim you are not a disciple of Artarion, and even manage to hold the lightning bolt of Leashan, but the Dark Lord of destruction and death has asked me to stay my hand!” This is followed by more laughter. “He is most anxious to learn how you come with such gifts. You are coming with me!”

The voices in your head speak up at this, and in a rare moment, instead of conversing with one another they seem to talking to you.

    >”Go with him? I would rather die first!”
    >”HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH, DEATH, DEATH EVERYWHERE! YOU SHOULD GO, IT SHALL BE GLORIOUS!”
    >”You mustn't go, we, I beg of you.”
    >”If you go and help to perpetrate acts of evil, you will not escape judgement!”
    >”Why should he listen to you twits, relics of a forgotten age?” This voice seems to be a new one, sounding sly and suggestive “You should go with him, and see what you can get out of it.”
    >”I agree! Let us Go!” this voice sounds violent and harsh.
Even the constantly weeping voice speaks up, although she sounds faint
    >”please don't go... “

You have a nagging suspicion that these voices are not that of your own make, but that of gods. You don’t know if this should be a relief to you however.

Dragging yourself back to the present, you see a skeletal hand rushing towards you. Thinking quickly you draw your sword and thrust.
    >”Think child, think of all the evil acts that this being before you has committed.” This voice seems to be male, with anger barely held in check.
    >”Now, bring him to justice!”

The Skeletal laughter continues, dark and foreboding. He draws his hand back, flexing it, before sweeping down with another.
You are James Courtland, 24 years old ten of wich you spent in a cell. You Seem to have no memory of the past 20 years, but have already formed a pact with the Goddess of gambling and strife to cause a change whether it be good or ill. In return it seems she has given you divine powers.

And you are about to be crushed into nonexistence by a giant skeletal arm composed of nothing but the void.

Lightning courses through your arms, and you strike out with your palm. A small beam of electrified white shoots forth striking the skeletal void. It streaks through, the blinding white iluminating the impossible emptiness, before bursting through the other side.

Dark mocking laughter greets you, and you watch as the arm knits itself back together. “I do so enjoy playing with you puny mortal, but I fear I may break you. Such an enticing concept would not let me bring you before Artarion however, and I would suffer his wrath. I will have to use a more direct method.” Raising his arm, he seems to be drawing the surrounding shadows to him. They coalesce into a small black sphere the size of a melon. Gasping in recognition, you remember having used this ability yourself.

    The laughter continues.

In a split second, you manage to yell out that you will return before the sphere of darkness impacts into your chest. The voices inside your head scream out and you watch as the world around you changes. Daylight turns to shadow, the world of reality dissolves, and you find yourself in an abyss of darkness. Stepping forward, your boots trod upon pieces of masonry that used to belong to the temple. A dark laughter can be heard, and you can see an impossibly large face materialize.

Seemingly staring into the depths of your soul, it speaks.

At this question, the voices inside your head clamour to make themselves known. Fighting for control of your own body, you narrowly manage to push them into the back of your mind where they belong. You scream. “I AM JAMES COURTLAND!”

Your words carry over the vast emptiness, and the being before you laughs. He speaks directly to your thoughts, “You are no longer in the temple foolish mortal! YOUR ARE IN MY REALM, THE SHADOW BEYOND EXISTENCE. LOOK AROUND AND KNOW DESPAIR, YOU WHO WOULD CARRY MY SYMBOL INSCRIBED UPON YOUR HAND!”

Clutching your head, you scream in pain. Falling to your knees before Atarion, you look inwards, begging for help.”

One of the voices answers your plea.
    >”Child, I am Leashan. You who carry my symbol do not yet know of me, but i can see no evil in your heart. Bound to you as I am, I will not let you face destruction at the hands of Artation, you have but to let me in..... “

[Ah despite the feminine sounding name, He is a man.]

“I agree to your deal, but my body is not yours. After this is over, I will take back what is mine.” You respond the voice in your head.

Artarion laughs, “Cutting a deal with gods long gone will not save you mortal.”

    >”Foolish child, I care not for your body! I ask that you let in the desire for Divine Judgement!! I am not so petty that i would posess you.” He sounds of anger barely held in check.

You push yourself to your feet, and look up at that hideous face. Thinking back to the temple he corrupted, and the damage his demon inflicted upon John cause you to cry out with rage. “You will pay for your crimes!”

“Such arrogance! YOU CHALLENGE A GOD?!? COME THEN, TO YOUR DEATH!!”

You feel a sudden shift. You can no longer feel the pain in your head or arms. The Lightning bolt branded into your arm grows to three times its size before your eyes. The air itself around you crackles with electricity, and more symbols are branded into your arm. This time, the pain is fleeting. Looking down you can see the Large symbol of the lightning bolt intertwining with that of a sword and a bar of light. All glowing brighlty with a blue glow, so much so that you find it hard to look at them.

The shadow retreats from you and you can see what looks to be thousands of corpses strewn across the ground.

    >”these are my gifts to you child, but should you conspire to commit evil acts, I shall take them away and visit naught but destruction upon you.”

“I AM GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS!” You find yourself screaming. You feel better than you have ever felt in years. Clutching your sword you stab at the shadow, and watch as the iron blade disintegrates before your eyes.

“FOOLISH!” the shadow surges foward, and smashes into your chest. You feel as if all the heat is being drained from you, before you are propelled through the air to impact the floor yards away.

Pushing yourself back to your feet, you clutch your chest and can feel blood sticking to your hand. Oddly enough you dont feel the pain.

Again, the shadow moves forward, but this time you slash at it with your sword. No, not your sword, but a sword of blindingly white light where the blade used to be. Where it impacts, you see shadow burned away like cloth. Laughing you strike again, and again.

“WHAT IS THIS?!?” the voice yells at you. Not sounding so self assured.

You give him an answer, “Judgement.”

“I know you Leashan, and i concede, but you will not have the justice you seek. I leave this broken vessel and this paltry realm to you and yours.”

And with that, the shadow fades away, leaving you in the middle of what looks to be a corpse strewn battlefield. One man still standing, collapses to his knees and looks at you.

I would have destroyed them as well had I not been summoned to deal with you.” Still in form of an elf, the demon materializes a black blade to meet your downward swing. You adopt a defensive stance, parrying a thrust of the demons blade with your lightning sword. Pushing it aside, you see an opening and strike out severing one of the elf-demons hands. He cackles and you watch as he reforms the hand in front of you.

“You touch your powers fumbling in ignorance. You know not what the gifts you hold are truly capable of, but fear not! You wont be alive much longer to enjoy them!” His form changes to mimic your own, but appears to be darker. His armour is finely made of a dark black obsidian, in comparison to the dark Orange of that of the dukes guards. His eyes are compltely black and he giggles. “This is how you could be if only you followed lord Artarion!”

Your blades meet once again, but this time your course is clear. “I bring you a gift, demon”

“Oh, is it your own heart on a platter?”

“It is Justice, and I give it freely!” He black blade shatters under your onslaught and cuts through to the arm beneath. This time it doesn't grow back.

"Your gift is paltry, I would much rather have your blood instead!" The demon laughs as, with effort you realize, he forms another sword in his remaining hand. This one apears to be made of black steel, and not shadow, and much sharper.

You embrace the desire for justice, and you can feel leashan’s approval. Feigning low, the demon moves to block your thrust. But to his suprise, you alter your swing higher.

The white bar of light that is your sword slides through the demons throat with contemptuous ease. He looks at you with shock before doing his best to laugh. It sounds more of a gurgle. Veins of white light extend from the wound in the demons neck, to cover the rest of his body. He stabs at you in desperation but you push it aside with your own. His death scream is barely audible and you watch in smug satisfaction as he crumples inwards.

Where the demon stood, you can see what looks like an open window before you, peering through you can see the ruins of the temple.
    The window starts to shrink.

    The window starts to shrink.

With a deep breath you jump through the rapidly closing window, and land face first on the hard masonry of the temple floor. You can feel your ribs flare from the pain, and groan. rolling on to your back, you let out an exultant cry. You've escaped from that hell!

Your cry of exultation is cut off however, as you can see the elfs pained face impaled upon a sharp piece of iron. Her eyes open indicating her last moments to be one of intense suffering. The rest of her, seem to be strewn about the place. Pushing yourself up, you look for your friends, you can see John still collapsed against one of the pillars. The rest are no where to be seen.

No, you can see something. Its the multicolored bear that followed the elf and companions. He seems to be sitting on his hind legs, in mourning.

Vowing to return, you look towards the bear. He stares at you, with his head cocked to one side, before ponderously walking over to you on his four legs.

Focusing your thoughts inwards you verbally assault the voice you have come to recognize as Degarth. Many of the others speak in his defense but you ignore them.

With deep remorse degarth responds “Two things prevent me from reaching out to my child before you. Firstly, he has lost faith. I fear that something broke within him when he witnessed the child of Venechale ripped apart so, I reach for him, but he does not see it. Secondly I seem to be bound to you and can not make myself physically known in this mortal realm anymore to restore his faith.” The voices are quiet now, “I mourn his loss of faith dearly, he was always devout.”

    >You can hear the weeping elven woman continue at this remark, her grief apparent, but she ignores your attempt at communication.

“Degarth has not forsaken you, he calls to you still but you do not hear it.” You look at him intently for a few seconds. “You are a good man Madral,”

“How do you know this? How do you speak for a god when his own cleric is lost without the light?” He retorts bitterly.”Your words are hollow, and fall on empty ears. Release me that I may finish my sacred duty to heal those in need!”

“This man will heal in time, at the least see that. You need not kill yourself for a shallow wound.” By this time you appear to have drawn a crowd. Letting go of the mans arm, he seems to stare at the dirt, before turning away and walking towards the lakeside.

Looking to the people before you, seeing their downtrodden faces, you come up with a plan. “I request Volunteers to brave their fear and return to the temple to gather the bodies for proper burial. Fear not though, the temple has been purged of Demonic taint!”

after a brief hesitation four men and one woman step forward and make their way to the temple, the bear trotting along with them.

“We also need people to forage for food!” looking around you watch as some of the people get to work. One even making a crude fishing pole and heading towards the lake. “For the rest of us, we will organize the camp, and prepare for the funeral services.” Having something to do causes the next few hours to pass uneventfully. The volunteers return to camp quietly and you direct them to the graves already dug. The hippie woman reverently places a large cloth bag inside, while another of the men approaches carrying the body of one of the convicts that broke out of the dukes cell with you what seems like ages ago. He places the body in the second grave, and the rest of the crowd approach to listen to your words, including Madral.

They cheer at your announcement of the rebuilding of the temple in honor of the fallen. The demons evil shall not go unanswered, but instead be metwith a dedication to that which it abhors; goodness.
