Okay, because there's an awful lot of homebrew Space Marines out I'm going to try a different side project: Where are our Dark Eldar fans, and would you like to contribute to this, to help the true predators of the Galaxy take their place amongst the ranks of these guys.

    http://1d4chan.org/wiki//tg/_40,000

Sure, there's a lot of cool stuff there, but surely the scions of Commoragh deserve their place amongst the lesser races?

    Here's my preliminary idea...

The Red Slivers are an old and embittered Haemonculus Coven, believed by most of Commoragh to be long swept away by the predations of upstart rivals. They lurk in the fringes of Commorite society, their works unpraised and their mark unknown save to some who have the foresight to have the history of the Dark City obsessively recorded. No Kabals answer to the Red Slivers, at least overtly, but the truth is this society of torture-surgeons has a far more sinister way of spreading its influence.

The Red Slivers have bent their craft to the creation of a flesh-creature, a sinuous and barbed worm which burrows into the base of the victim's spine and rapidly threads its body with invasive fibres through which the victim may be controlled at will. From the moment of symbiosis the victim is as good as dead, for removal of the parasite causes irreparable damage to the host's innards, literally ripping their blood vessels out with it. The only way to tell if someone is a host is a series of pinprick-like scabs on the host's collarbone, from which the Coven gets its name. Through the horrid science of the Haemonculus' art the Slivers may control the newly assimilated victim, and often the first sign of a Sliver attack is when a proportion of the population goes berserk at the worst possible moment.

I'll leave this basic idea with you guys, gotta head out for a bit. Here's hoping it's not TOTAL stream-of-consciousness rubbish.

    Bump for support.

OP, this idea of yours sounds a lot like the Phyrexian memetic spine implants described in the MTG Invasion novels. This makes sense, as I've been increasingly prone to seeing parallels between the DE Coven armies and the Phyrexians.

Haemonculi Covens are also far more interesting than Kabals or Wych Cults in this new 5th ed. release, from all aspects: fluff, gameplay, and model aesthetic.

I'm fucking in. Haemonculi covens FTW.

I had an dea I'd like to develop correctly a while ago:

So Haemonculus Coven meets invasion of the body snatchers.

Also it would be great switch for a Dark Heresy team if they jump to the conclusion that they are investigating a series of demonic posessions or Genestealer incursion.

okay, so, seconding OP's idea if you manage to include some gross body transformations at some point, because that's the fun of it.

also, the chief haemonculus spawns these things spontaneously at a dangerously high rate that requires him to constantly feed off his slaves' distilled body fluids and their suffering. And it's becoming a logistic problem for the whole coven.

    Ebon Sting
Hex -- Created countervirus to plague of glass. Implied weaponized glass virus after outbreak.
    Everspiral
Prophets of Flesh -- focus on turning Tau into grotesques, etc. Want to get their hands on a Ethereal.
    Black Descent
    Altered
    Coven of Twelve
    Dark Creed
Children of Bone -- specialize in big grotesques.

    And other stuff they did
-- invaded Fenris. Kidnapped and mutated Space wolf recruits into monsters.
-- Use Ogryns for raw material

Those fuckers are insane by Haemonculi standards---they built the miles-high Tower of Flesh out of the still-living bodies of their enemies, and were responsible for teaching some of their secrets to Fabius Bile (a Chaos Marine! the DE hate Chaos almost as much as the Craftworld Eldar!).

Back. The name is just something I came up with on the spot, it's nothing deep or significant.

My general idea is that this Haemonculus coven works through a finely tuned network of intermediaries, so those working for them aren't actually aware of it. It's Dark Eldar intrigue taken to its ultimate end, really.

The master of the <Any ideas for a decent name?> is known as Drav'ek the Embalmed. Unlike the vast majority of the haemonculi Drav'ek has focused his craft inwards and downwards, creating a variety of despicable pathogens and horrid imp-like flesh creatures.

Amongst his creations are a horrid swarm of miniscule bio-engineered creatures which enter their target's bloodstream and begin to excrete a web-like substance, clogging up arteries and causing massive strokes.

He is obsessed with patterns and details within his work, often going to unnecessary lengths to make sure his realspace raids and Commorite plots play out exactly as envisioned. Of course, due to the shroud of secrecy surrounding everything Dra'vek and his Coven do his exploits go unrecorded. Dra'vek prefers it like this, his triumphs are like a fine wine for him to savour alone. Other Dark Eldar knowing about his plans is other Dark Eldar trying to interfere with them, and he does despise interference.

The Enlightened – An extremely secretive and select coven. Its highest echelon of authority are The Reborn , a group of six deserters from various other covens who abandoned them to seek the fruits of intellectual pursuits taboo even within the psychopathic reaches of Commorragh. The focus of their research involved unlocking the psychic potential of the eldar race and using the insane science of the haemonculi to push it to the most absurd levels possible, and seek to tamper with their own bodies and souls that they too may tap into this limitless potential.
But Commorragh is an unfriendly face to the psyker, and these six intellectuals were well aware that any such move on their part would quickly see them on the operating table of their superiors. So, after many slow centuries of gradually locating each other as kindred spirits, whilst all that time keeping a low profile, they chose to abandon their names, their covens, their faces, and all their former prestige.
They chose the impossible... they chose... *insert cool name for a city here*.
A tiny satellite realm towards the edges of the half-real space of the great city, far away from the dull light of the captured suns. It is there that the subordinates of The Reborn labour away to the whims of their masters, capturing and dissecting and experimenting on those with psychic potential, with Farseers being the juiciest test subjects of all. Even daemons are bound and contained in small numbers for various tests that seek, vainly some might presume, to understand the chaotic nature of these warp-spawned entities, how they manifest, how they live and exist, and even how to create more of them. At the black centre of this facility, arrayed in a circular pattern around a vast generator that stretches down into a seemingly endless pit, are The Reborn themselves.
    >> Pt. 2 Because it sounds pretty dumb and cheesy to me Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)06:47 No.15068953
    >>15068943

Having conducted obscene experiments on their minds and bodies, these creatures have awakened and pushed their psychic potential to new limits, such that they can sustain the entire complex just with the combined focus of their will alone.

Only a select few subordinates are privy to this secret, as the six are almost constantly forced to remain inside of self-contained dampening chambers that mask their enormous psychic presence from the hungry eyes of the Dark City. Only by moving their own realm deep into the bowels of the webway proper are they able to obtain some semblance of privacy that allows them to emerge from their cocoons without fear of discovery, bathing in the ecstatic joy of their reality warping powers.

The ultimate aim of the six is to transcend their mundane, fleshly forms and souls and achieve a greater, completely new existence on par with the daemons that they study... a warp-born existence, but one that is free from the biting hunger of She-who-thirsts. In short they seek to no longer be Eldar but something else entirely

It is perhaps for this reason that Asdrubael Vect, who has multiple spies within the six’s so called ‘confidants’, allows them to continue to exist.

Perhaps he is curious as to what fruits their research will produce, or perhaps he has some other, far more sinister purpose that only time will unveil

also: even skinnier than other haemonculi to wear skinny jeans. But they walk, because floating above the ground is so overdone and dead. But since they can't, they have to crawl instead. Serves 'em good.

what they seek to become is basically a mandrake.

but as they don't know what the fuck they're doing, they will most likely end up getting crushed by Vect as soon as their researches will produce something vaguely useful and not too dangerous.

but making them settle in Commorragh sounds quite dumb, indeed. They will either dun goofed, or be detected by covens who have better psychic detection systems than their concealment ones. It's possible, but very unlikely.

Dunno, make them settle in the realspace. They like doing very dangerous (stupid) things, so why not this?

A very VERY interesting idea, but I just feel it might cross the line into too groundbreaking. Just because of the Dark Eldar's pathalogical terror about Slaanesh and attracting its attention through such dangers as psychic powers. BUT I really like it, 'cuz it's EXACTLY what Haemonculi like to poke about in. Though personally any haemonculus I fluffed would probably see psychic powers as an easy way out, not something befitting a true artiste.

using it as a tool, maybe, but Haemonculi are basically surrealists with too much resources in their hands, so why not, but not in this way.

That's why I was suggesting studying mandrakes earlier. these guys can teleport, develop mutations, and throw fireballs with their hands, without attracting daemons. If I were this coven, I'd try to know what's up with the little blackies instead of grafting zoanthrope bits onto my brain.

Well I was kinda just trying to find a way to fit a psyker focused coven in AT ALL.

It's kinda like trying to make a chapter of loyalist marines who Just so happen to engage in blood ritua-... oh wait.. Grey Knights.

I thought it up while trying to think up the Complete apposite just now, a coven called The Hollows focused around turning themselves into emotionless blanks.

They tend to attract old and world weary dark eldar sick of the constant back and forth struggle for their own souls, and so join this strange new movement that preaches complete emotional deprivation in order to slake off the hunger of she who thirsts.

They believe that by throwing off the shackles of their emotions they will in doing so change the very nature of their souls, and be forever out of the reach of Slaanesh, and supposedly the head Haemonculi have been whispered to have achieved this, but have transformed into barren, joyless abominations that are the complete opposite of what every trigger-happy kabalite wants to be.

So... basically the Dustmen from Planescape... but IN SPACE

I know, they are, the Nightmares will always have a place in my heart. But we should have a change of pace.

    *Ahem*

It seemed as if the entire Hive had gathered for the Governor's speech. Shivering, oil-stained labourers stood alongside the disconcerted nobility, each wearing a baroque golden mask and accompanied by a small retinue of fussing servants, all eyes were drawn to the raised dais upon which Governor Ranal stood, or to large pict screens dusting the hive.

The Governor glowered over the crowd, his face stoney and his fists clenched. His dark hair was greying, a receding hairline plaguing the man but not completely robbing him of his regal dignity. As he spoke, his voice amplified throughout the world, the eyes and ears of an entire planet turned to their liege.

"Citizens of Aleris III, no doubt some of you will have heard of the calamity which has befallen Hive Strasth, an act of base sabotage for which the Emperor's ordained punishment is death." The Governor paused for a few heartbeats, letting his words sink in, before continuing. "There will be no place on this planet, no underhive gutter or private spire, which will shelter the enemies of the Imperium from their retribution. Heed my words, if you accursed heretics are listening to this, you are doomed.

In his hands he fidgeted with a dark dataslate, one of his personal stock, from which the most damning part of this atrocious attack could be seen. A pict of Governor Ranal and his family, found in the murdered hands of his own son, who had been crossed out in the picture. Upon the heads of his wife and children were intricate circular designs, weaving in and out of themselves, though their meaning was clear: A bullseye. A target. It had been this which had provoked Ranal to address the nation, he would never let this brazen threat go unanswered.

The last thing he ever saw was the sight of his own bodyguard, convulsing and grinning madly as they turned their guns upon the now-panicing crowd.

"And so begins the true entertainment." A new voice carried over the planet, a coldly amused voice almost sandpapery in intonation. Into the vid screens stepped Drav'ek the Embalmed, his haggard and drawn grin burned into the retinas of billions. Dusting himself off lightly and nodding into the cameras mockingly.

"Now, we are going to begin our little game. Hive, uh, Strasth, I hope I am saying it right, your language is pathetic enough to be not worth study. The majority of your planetary defence force is currently stationed there, so for your sake and the sake of the planet I hope you find the barrels of my pets I've laced throughout your lovely city. When they open up, you'll find your loyal fighting force will be taking a great pleasure in gutting every last one of you." The Embalmed's eyes shone as he said this, leaning forward on the podium to address the terrified nation.

"You have an hour and a half before the first casket opens. Better get searching...Oh, and as for Hive Teltha, which I have the honour of playing host to tonight..." The Haemonculus' eyes narrowed dangerously beneath his grin. "I'm afraid the game is up for you. Enjoy..." The last thing which could be heard before the vid feed cut was a savage roar as bizarre orbs in the air began to open around the Haemonculus, bringing Commoragh's finest toys into the Hive. The games had begun.

    In addition...

    -Potentially unhealthy interest in mandrakes.

A host to these parasites wouldn't stay unblemished for long. They'd start to lose a lot of weight quite quickly as the worm leeches sustainance in a tapeworm-esque manner, they become very pale. I'd say after about a month or so of implantation they start seriously deteriorating, and that's if the controlling haemonculus bothered to keep the plaything in good condition.

I've also got a great vision of a worm bursting its way out of the host's back Alien-style, dragging most of the poor bastard's vein network with it.

    I'm thinking

The parasites themselves are like a hellish offspring of tapeworms, they feed upon their host, draining the nutrients on its body until the host is emaciated and bony. The worms also continue to grow, and they shift within the body to accomidate themselves. Thus hosts which have survived for a good while will be horrid, utterly dysmorphic things, lurching forward single-mindedly while the rippling form of their massive symbiote is seen pushing against their flesh.
    >> Technomancer 05/27/11(Fri)09:12 No.15069794
oh, also: the worms use telepathy to serve as relays between the hosts and the haemonculi, right?

what if the worms were slowly taking over the heamonculi themselves?
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)09:15 No.15069813

    >>15069794

Telepathy, brainwave manipulation, cosmic rays, flux capacitors, general "Science not gotta explain shit" at the moment.

Slowly taking them over...I wouldn't put it so definitively, but perhaps as the parasites grow they develop full awareness and chafe against their masters' control, prompting hassle for the Coven and perhaps a bit of mind control here and there. I think it sounds better than "They're taking it up the ass from their own bio-worms"

I've looked at both sprues and I think this should work, but I'm not completely sure. Also, I'd need weapons 'cause the Crypt Ghouls don't carry ones (pointy sticks and stones aren't weapons).

But while we're talking fluff ideas I've had two loose concepts for a Haemonculus coven floating through my head:
–The first one would be led by a Haemonculus who, in his quest to create the perfect killing machine, has left Commoragh to experiment on alien species, his favorite test subjects being Orks due to their strength and toughness.
–The second coven's speciality is creating biological weapons; viruses, acids, gases and the like. The lead Haemonculus would wear a mask similar to the plague doctors of old (pic related).

The coven of the winding tongue.

This ancient, venerated Haemonculi coven has dispensed with such crude arts like cloning and creating bigger spines on grotesques..

Instead, they devote their considerable genius to perfecting their culinary skills, inventing new and exotic flavours, and creating literally out of this world dinners to the delight of the ravenously pleasure hungry masses of Commoragh.

They conduct realspace raids to obtain their ingredients, but whereas lesser chefs might stoop to such pitiful lows as selecting the meat of various other species these Haemonculi are far more... abstract in their choices.

The last breath of a dying Catachan commissar who has been fragged by his own men. the severed foot of the first hormagaunt to step onto the battle at the very beginning of a tyranid incursion. A tear shed by a Lyanden guardian during the time of his craftworld's ravaging.

A particularly delectable capture came when the Great Dreadnought Bjorn the fell handed was briefly brought low and the teeming servants of the coven managed to sieze a sample of his preservative fluid before dissapearing back into the webway.

It is said that their dishes can take you to other worlds. Make you relive every pleasure you've ever felt in your life or offer a glimpse of the nightmarish pain that is felt when an Eldar dies and is consumed by She-who-thirsts

They are the masters of the dark kitchen.

The Enshrouded (Going for that right now, since it's the one with the most votes) dwell outside of Commoragh proper, though the Dark City is dusted with their outposts and safehouses. Their headquarters is within a remote cranny of the Webway, shielded and warded many times over by the finest minds the Haemonculi could manipulate. Their facility is a collosal complex, a double helix stretching on into eternity with many tributary growths branching off at right angles. Atop the colossal gateway a series of monstrous flesh-golems stand watch, each the loving product of a small band of Enshrouded and each capable of crumpling battle-tanks beneath their many-armed bulk.

A name for this facility could be The Ark, should The Enshrouded trump it.

The problem is you simply cannot trust Dark Eldar. So if this super-secret and forbidden Coven society has a Kabal it's allied with there needs to be a reason why the Archon of said Kabal doesn't just run to Vect and betrays the Haemonculi to him.
    >> SC Guy 05/27/11(Fri)20:08 No.15075782
    >>15075763

Thus why they'd be resentful. The Haemonculi have something over the Archon, some piece of blackmail which ensures his silence. Perhaps they once had a Dracon of the Kabal of the Black Heart killed or something of that kind of existence-threatening magnitude, and The Enshrouded know of it.

So what we've got so far is...

    Name: The Enshrouded

Location: The Webway, outside Commoragh proper in a hidden facility known as The Ark.

Highly secretive, work through a system of fronts and intermediates in order to interact with other elements of Commorite society. Consists of Haemonculi conducting research which may put them in danger.

Have a Kabal in their pocket, blackmailing the Archon. The Archon is highly resentful, and constantly tries to find ways to escape their stranglehold.

The Coven makes use of parasites who burrow into the victim and control them. Over a period of a month or so the host is leeched by its symbiote, resulting in horrid disfigurement as the emaciated host carries around the huge worm, which can be seen pressed against its flesh. An alternative parasite has an in-built trigger which causes a spawn-like cascade of mutations in the host when the time is right.

A number of projects and factions within the Coven are active, including...

A sect devoted to controlling and refining the parasites.

A group obsessed with reviving their dormant psychic potential.

A faction which believes the only way to beat Slaanesh's stranglehold is to surrender their emotions and such, becoming psychic blanks and emotionless husks.

As a spin on this, you could really play up the 'fallen angel' theme. The Archon and her Kabal are one of the few surviving Sun Cults, worshipping the stolen stars that feed Commoragh with power. Rather than the dark, morbid hues or bright contrasts most Dark Eldar wear, go for a white and gold colour scheme. Re-fluff things like Night Sheilds and Shadowfields to be bits of technology that hide the wearer behind dazzling cornoas of light rather than swathes of darkness. Lots of Haywire Blasters and Heat Lances, and perhaps they always attack at mid-day, opening their webway portals in such a way that it looks like they're descending out of the sun? Of course, the 'light' they represent isn't good at all, but a scorching, merciless heat that burns everything before it to ash.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)22:06 No.15076683
What about a coven devoted to webway technology?

Repairing damaged portions of the webway, improving them, and finding new ways of utilising them?

They could be big on using all things teleporters in battle, maybe having some kind of Dark Eldar equivalent of Warp Spiders.

In the open they act much like public servants for all of Commoragh, construction workers if you will, being responsible for improving the transport mechanisms throughout the dark city, and perhaps even assisting in the construction of realms.

Secretly however they use their technology to build up a strong powerbase both within and outside Commoragh, their own tower complex containing many hidden portals that lead to enclaves hidden in the farthest reaches of the webway.

their ultimate goal is to construct another city, another Commorragh where they can rule in secret, away from the stupid backstabbing politics of the Kabals

    -Paroxysm-like spell, because...c'mon.

-A teleport-assimilation spell as per Matrix Agents. The targeted unit suffers D6 S4 AP2 hits a la Callidus assassin, then the Haemonculus appears within 3". Can be used on friendly units, in which case 1 guy dies and is replaced with the Haemonculus.

-A pain-leech spell which does D6 S3 AP 3 hits. If an unsaved wound is used the Haemonculus can give himself or any unit within 12" a pain token like a Cronos.

Some vague suggestions for 'The Hollows' or those blank guys or whatever.

Their abilities shouldnt particularly focus around killing the enemy, but rather freezing and weakening them.

Effects that ground units in place, or lower their stats

As well as the obvious rules affecting psykers and preventing them from casting anything

    Yeah, pretty much this.

    >>15077220

Hollows works for me. They'd probably have that rule most Blanks have which reduces Ld to 7 within a certain radius.

    So, uh...

    Overall organization: The Enshrouded
    Parasite-controllers: Name needed
    Blanks: The Hollows
    Psychics: The Enlightened
    Webway guys: Name needed
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)23:28 No.15077426
    >>15077220

    Also, another suggestion.

all Hollows units should not have Power from Pain

The rule is supposed to represent the euphoric invigoration that each Dark Eldar feels when surrounded by pain, as it energises and feeds their orgasmic glee.

The Hollows are the complete opposite of this, they dont believe in pleasure at all. The way they see it is that the Eldar race is flawed, and must instead look inwardly that they might effect some change upon themselves and become something other than what they are, and only that way may they escape She-who-thirsts

So instead perhaps any unit identified as belonging to their coven immediately benefits from FNP and other special benefits, but cannot feed on the joy of pain like other DE units
    >> SC Guy 05/27/11(Fri)23:32 No.15077467
    >>15077426

This makes so much sense. I say the Hollows use far more...not STRAIGHTFORWARD weapons as such, but stuff intended to kill quickly and effectively, since they have no joy in such friviolity. Thus I can see them using a fair bit of Darklight and other kill-weapons.

Haemonculus Azrael Zeth stood amongst his bodyguard of wracks, his arms crossed as he surveyed the carnage idly. His eyes were dead and dull beneath his cowl, his flotation crystals pulsing softly as he hovered just enough to lift him above his subordinates.

The Mon-keigh were putting up a foolhardy defence, roaring their inane warcries as they tested their skill against the elegance of Succubus Ereal's Hekatrix handmaidens. Some of the Space Marines lay still, their blue and white armour mired with their drying arterial blood. It was most tiresome, and yet necessary, to prolong this butchery for the amusement of his Azrael's erstwhile allies.

A new cry turned the Hollow's head, and with a barely registerable flicker of surprise he beheld another of the Sons of Guilliman racing towards him. He wore no helmet, his head enclosed by a glowing hood, and in his hand a blade crackled with eldritch energies. With a soft roll of his eyes, Azrael snatched his staff from the hand of his wrack attendant, holding the steel rod in two hands.

The Librarian was close enough to make out properly now. He was obviously on his last legs, a nasty gash carving from his lip to the end of his cheek, and he chanted fervant prayers as the foul lightning of the warp built around him.

"I AM THE SWORD OF THE EMPEROR, AND BY HIS WILL I ABJURE THEE, XENOS FILTH!" He screamed, and the world seemed to shake as the lightning leapt from his fingertops. The psychic bolts hissed with deadly intent as they sped towards Azrael...Then vanished into thin air.

The librarian barely had time to register his surprise and horror before his floating foe casually turned the glowing end of his staff towards him. With a bored-looking tug of a hidden trigger Azrael fired a pulsing trail of Darklight at the impudent mon-keigh. The ray left a perfect crater in the middle of his chest, vaporising both his hearts and killing him where he stood. Azrael spared his victory not another thought, turning back to the last stand of the remaining marines with a sigh. This wasn't nearly worth the bother...

It's not exactly a super-coven, it's just an alliance of convenience. Each of these covens is conducting research which could get them screwed if the other covens or the larger Kabals got wind of it, so they band together in an alliance of convenience and secrecy, bending their resources towards the mutual protection.

And besides, I'm pretty sure the Enshrouded wouldn't mind having a few nulls around to suppress psykers, just like having a few psykers would be good.

So focusing on this coven of the Hollows, how would their troops function?

I was thinking make them more of a shooty focused coven that slowly plods along, so likely slow and purposeful and relentless will abound.

You were suggesting darklight weaponry SC guy? Is that really acceptable to have equipped en-masse on a basic troop unit like wracks?

Also, would we just transplant the soulless, psychic abomination and null void special rules onto all of them from the necron dex??
    >> SC Guy 05/28/11(Sat)02:46 No.15079252
    >>15079213

I was talking about the Haemonculi themselves using a lot of Darklight weaponry, which is usually forbidden to them in favour of the wacky Arcane Items. Obviously arming mooks with a standard issue weapon which can wreck Land Raiders with ease is ridiculous.

Remind me what these rules are, specifically? I need to see the details.

SaP means that you always count as moving through difficult terrain

Relentless means that you can move and fire rapidfire and heavy weapons as if you were stationary

    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)03:16 No.15079517
    >>15079404

Soulless forces all enemy units with 12" to take -2 to their leadership

Psychic abomination forces any psyker or daemon within 6" to take a morale check or fall back, unless it's in CC at the time in which case they hit on 6s and are I1 for the rest of the assault phase

Null void makes it so any model within 6" are not affected by psychic powers in any way, nor can psychic powers be used within that same radius, and psychic powers cannot trace line of sight through the unit
    >> SC Guy 05/28/11(Sat)03:22 No.15079547
    >>15079517

I wouldn't have a blanket use of these rules for everyone in the army, but perhaps the Hollow Haemonculi have these rules and confer them to the unit they're in. For the wracks and such I'd give them FnP standard, and Relentless/Slow and Purposeful sounds good. I've got a fixation in my head that Hollow guys can take Disintegrators, Darklight Weapons and stuff like that as opposed to Liquifier Guns, and focus more on clean kills rather than poison and stuff. Stuff like giving Aberrations the options for either Power Weapons or rending.
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)03:32 No.15079616
    >>15079547

That would infer that the wracks are not soulless blanks like the haemonculi

would you prefer it that way?

Also... you'd probably best think of something to make up for the SaP

It effectively gimps them in regards to close combat.

I'm struggling to see these guys as using regular grotesques at all

Also, perhaps make these guys stubborn?
    >> SC Guy 05/28/11(Sat)03:39 No.15079662
    >>15079616

I'm not sure, I'd think there's certain "levels" of blank-hood, since I'd imagine it's a pretty hard thing to emulate. It's sorta like the progression of the Adeptus Mechanicus, your rank determines your human/machine ratio.

Hmm...I get what you're saying with the Grotesques, yeah.

As for the drawback of Slow and Purposeful...Stubborn sounds like it makes sense. Perhaps give them a new gun, something like a "Laceration Rifle" or something, Heavy 2 S4 AP6 Rending or something of the like, along with scaled up and down versions.
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)04:00 No.15079830
    >>15079662

If we're talking 'levels of blankhood' then maybe give these fellas the most basic one of them, the soulless ability?

That way we can focus these guys around ld affecting equipment

also, suppose we take that into consideration, let's just start out like this

how does that sound for the basic wrack? Perhaps every single one of them can exchange their pistol for some kind of rifle weapon? Or maybe they can take splinter rifles one handed... make use of their relentless rule?

As I said, I think a rending pistol/rifle/cannon would be good for these guys. They seem like the type who'd go for clean kills rather than watching them die of poisoning.

    Laceration Pistol

    18" S4 AP5 Pistol Rending

    Laceration Rifle

    24" S4 AP5 Assault 2 Rending

    Laceration Cannon

    36" S5 AP4 Heavy 4 Rending

So it's not as versatile as Splinter Weaponry, but makes up for it with a rending chance. Making the rifle Assault 2 rather than rapid fire and adding 6" onto the pistol range is a way to counter Slow & Purposeful, since it's quite a detracting factor.

And these guys dont have that going for them at all... just situational abilities that can work for them against psykers (which would make them useless against another Dark Eldar force)

That's rather close to what I imagine actually... just not quite so segmented in its attire.

I reason that, as was discussed earlier, because this coven isnt one that'd be particularly given towards creating frenzied, pain hungry grotesques... that instead it's their leaders that fulfill the role of being huge terrifying monsters.

The Hollows aren't interested in experimenting on other creatures, they're most interested in experimenting on themselves.

So it's the haemonculi that are the flesh monstrosities towering over everyone else
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)22:09 No.15086931
To elaborate on that idea you proposed way back at the beginning of this thread Techno...

Perhaps a coven that has taken a keen interest in studying the physical (and non-physical makeup) of mandrakes, learning what spawns them, how they are created, and how they continue to live. They capture the fiends at every opportunity, dissecting them in their laboratories to plumb the secrets of their bodies. Over time they have succeeded in copying the abilities of these creatures and have applied this knowledge to both themselves, their minions, and their technology (so I’m thinking stealth focused wracks... invulnerable saves on everything, etc)

Of course these actions couldn’t go unnoticed forever, and so this coven has gained the ire of the mandrake gangs, with the Decapitator personally vowing to take the heads of the chief Haemonculi.

It is for this reason that this coven banded with its outcast kin under the banner of the Enshrouded, so that they might continue their experiments with some modicum of protection offered by the other sub factions that they share their tower with.

How does that sound? they need a name of course
    >> Technomancer 05/28/11(Sat)22:24 No.15087120
    >>15086931
Meh, I still preferred the idea of making them manipulate each other.

actually, I thought deeper into that: It all stems from the idea that Mandrakes could be Malal-worshippers and that their abilities don't come from the regular psychic vampirism that dark eldars slowly developed, but from daemonic gifts granted by Malal. Indeed, malalites are known for their cannibalistic/vampiric practices. Take Dreadaxe, for instance, or that ogre prophet, back when he was a malalite. Also, Malal has been banned from the Warp by the other gods, in a "tomb of space" that could perfectly be the pseudo-webway made of shadows that mandrakes use.

But the Haemonculi aren't aware of that, and they clumsily managed to mimic some of the mandrakes capacities and rituals, never ultimately realizing that doing so, they were effectively spreading the taint of Chaos into their own ranks, which is what the mandrakes who collaborate with them ultimately desire, so they can use their resources to perform a ritual like Kheradruakh's.

And maybe that's what's pissing him off: a rival cult using the coven.

Officially, it's "we give you slaves and fancy stuff, you give us test subjects", but actually, it's "we're trying to screw each other up"

    whatcha think about this?
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)22:34 No.15087248
    >>15087120

I like the idea that the coven is being manipulated... and your idea in general

But your theory on Mandrakes definitely being Malalites seems to be trying to dictate canon abit harsh eh?

Perhaps just keep it vague... have Malalite themes, suggest the things you proposed like the tomb of some mysterious, horrible warp entity, but never actually make it clear that Mandrakes are in any way connected to Malal. just offer hints that they might be without actually saying 'This is what I think Mandrakes are and THAT'S WHAT THE ARE'

The setting runs off vague half-answers and inconculsive data

So if this is the case... would that mean that the Mandrakes siding with this coven have made the Decapitator their enemy as well?

Also, speaking of a 'super baleblast' perhaps the Mandrake grotesques can fire off a template version of a standard baleblast?

Would make them ridiculously good troop killers... just dont let them near your own units or they'll probably make mincemeat out of them even more than usual

Bumping in the hope for more ideas and suggestions.

As a suggestion for some Hollow unique arcane wargear, how about something that forces units attempting to charge the unit containing the haemounculous to take a morale check or count as moving through difficult terrain?

Perhaps as they are overcome by a wave of dread and fear exuding from the soulless being
    >> SC Guy 05/29/11(Sun)02:28 No.15089216
The thread WOULD start going the moment I fell asleep...Hehe...

    >>15086370

Well the way I'm imagining these rules is that the various covens are interchangeable, each type of Haemonculus and that having a seperate function. You'd take a Hollow Haemonculus to reduce the Ld of your foe and to give your squad psychic immunity. That -2Ld is actually quite an advantage, it makes all the many many pieces of Dark Eldar wargear requiring Ld tests to be failed to function a little less hard to pull off. The Hollows themselves don't need Pain Tokens, they're being cast as a shooty force. Anything which wants to approach them needs to wade through a storm of rending shots to get their kills, and even then the wracks can be quite an effective tarpit.

    >>15088046

I'd say make them roll 3 dice and discard the highest for it.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)03:39 No.15089863
    >>15089216

Understandable.. but what do you think of my suggestion to make the Hollow Haemonculi have a kind of union with grotesques?

Beyond Wracks there isnt really any other units that suit the Hollow creed, so by making the Haemonculi seem more monstrous (I'm thinking just increase their toughness and str by 1, and make it so that ancients stay at I 4)

This way you could give them options to mount heavier weaponry (twin linked Lacerator cannon?) and complement the shootier nature of the coven.

Of course they'd be SaP and stubborn as well

Speaking of which.... what do You imagine for the overall visual aesthetic of The Hollows? Share your own ideas. I've already pointed out how I imagine them
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)03:41 No.15089894
    >>15089863

I meant to say that by making the Hollow Haemonculi more monstrous, you highlight the fact that they've evolved (or devolved... depending on your point of view) into something radically different from their former kin
    >> SC Guy 05/29/11(Sun)03:49 No.15089959
    >>15089863

I like it, it's quite an interesting route to go down. I wouldn't have them being quite as bulky and musclebound as Grotesques, I think that'd screw with the overall Haemonculus aesthetic too much. I'd go with making them unnaturally tall and broad but still in Haemonculic proportions.

I see the Hollows covering themselves up extensively, wearing a lot of hoods and facemasks and bladed gloves and such. Whenever I think of the wracks I see a stylised single eye motif upon their masks, so when they attack all one sees is a wave of cyclopean horrors emerging from the mists slowly, single-mindedly, not making a single noise.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)03:57 No.15090028
    >>15089959

Well as I said... str 4 t 5. 1 more in each stat than a regular haemonculus

They're certainly durable... but they still aren't any sort of heavy hitter by universal standards, and with SaD they wont be very useful at assaulting anyone.

Now it's just a question of weapon options... Pistols and the like are obviously out of the question. Even things like Hexrifles dont make much sense to me... a sniper rifle on a grotesque sized creature?

Also I guess they'd get the bulky rule as well eh?
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)03:59 No.15090049
    >>15090028

Oh and also I'd suggest making the huskblade cost even more for these guys
    >> SC Guy 05/29/11(Sun)04:16 No.15090181
    >>15090028

I'd say bumping it up 5-10pts. A S4 Huskblade is possible on archons and such via Combat Drugs, and as you said SaP makes sure you're not zooming across the board and dispatching everything, even in raiders.

    Well let's think, weapon-wise...

Basic: CCW and Lacerator Rifle? Have it that they can use rapid-fire weapons as pistols due to their increased size and added stabilisers?

    Upgrades:

    Remove Blaster, Blast Pistol

    Twin-linked Lacerator Rifle
    Twin-linked Dark Lance
    Twin-linked Disintegrator
    Twin-linked Haywire Blaster

Have these guys as basically mobile weapon platforms when not in combat.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)04:30 No.15090295
    >>15090181

I was just thinking... do you think twin linked on every heavy weapon option available might be too much?

Perhaps make it an option to take a single heavy weapon and a CCW OR replace both options and take a single twin linked heavy weapon? Or do you think it's still fairly balanced to have them touting twin linked stuff just normally?

Speaking of which... just realised that soul-traps ought to be stricken from their options (and replaced by something else of course). For one thing it's not very much in line with their character to absorb the strength of fallen foes. Sure, they're a drain on others around them, but the point that differentiates them from other Dark Eldar is that killing their enemies doesn't make them stronger.

Plus a soultrap on a Str4 character is pretty obscene... even with SaP.

Also as a general question for this entire concept. Is this coven of the Enshrouded located in a single realm or location? What should we call it?

It'd help when describing the background of these various sub factions to mention how they came to be at the 'Tower/realm of... whatever'

I was pondering that just today actually... a coven that has been studying the nids and has begun reshaping themselves into a kind of hivemind, as well as adapting their biology to mirror that of the nids.

I'm having trouble figuring out exactly how this would generate enough enmity towards them to warrant their seeking refuge amongst the Enshrouded though
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)04:44 No.15090414
    >>15090389
well you'd need to be pretty well versed in the matter of psychics, blanks, souls, and so forth if they truly wanted to integrate tyranid like stuff into themselves or turn themselves into a hivemind

Devouring Maw? They want to make a hivemind that can eat slaanesh as an ultimate act of revenge.
    >> SC Guy 05/29/11(Sun)04:44 No.15090420
    >>15090295

Yeah, that's probably a better idea. I guess I'm just seeing red from my Dark Lances missing so much, heh. So either 1 heavy weapon and a CCW of some kind or a twin-linked one, makes sense. And it's not EVERY heavy weapon per se, I've left out Heat Lances. Unintentional, sure, but...hm...

How about instead of a Soul Trap you get something called an Icon of Malice, basically as the soul leaves the body it's captured by a symbol somewhere on the Haemonculus' clothing or something of the like. A lot of SCIENCE!!!! later, and tl;dr for each MC/IC they kill the effect of their Soulless rule is increased by 1.

Sounds good to me... another group of transhumanist (transeldarist?) Dark Eldar bent on forcing the evolution of their species to help them avoid their grim fate.

We already have the Hollows and the Enlightened, so the Devouring Maw would fit right in.

Not sure how 'eating Slaanesh' would work though? Perhaps they wish to establish themselves as a warp presence massive enough to rival the chaos god?

Speaking of the Enlightened.. I was thinking of a way to make their end goals seem more concrete. Perhaps rather than just a vague idea of 'becoming powerful warp entitites' they seek to actually transform themselves into Gods like those of the ancient Eldar?

They can be evil Space Mormons
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)04:53 No.15090488
    >>15090448
well a gestalt entity of a hivemind would allow them to not worry about bodily death as the soul is able to inhabit multiple bodies with ease. The only way to for Slaanesh to consume them would be if ever single body was destroyed. Otherwise they can just start over.

Eventually, if they expand large enough, they figure they'd be able to fuck over the warp in a manner similar to the tyranid's shadow of the warp.

Of course there is the occasional problem a wrack that's a little too tyranidy getting reconnected with the nid hivemind.

Additional subtractions to Ld seems a little too OP to me, especially if the unit is packing a couple of mind scourges. Plus like I said it doesnt make sense to me for an enemy's soul to empower a Hollow in any way. Their strength comes from their own repression of their spirit, not sucking stuff out of others.

But then again I can only think up more one shot sort of effects

An enemy unit within 18” takes a Ld test or else every model is at -1 toughness for the rest of the turn. One shot

Any unit attempting to fire at the model and his squad that turn must pass a Ld test or fire at BS1. One shot.

All heat based attacks (flamethrowers, melta weapons, heat lances etc) against the unit are rendered ineffective for the remainder of the shooting phase. One shot

I'm not sure... perhaps we can get a third opinion?

I imagine that this is in part the reason why the coven has gone into hiding.

Perhaps their groundbreaking experiments into the secrets of tyranid biology were at first praised by Commorragh as a great success... but then some of the more mutated members went full nid and ended up calling a hive-fleet through a portal into the Dark City.... which only barely managed to hold it off.
