61 KB Candy Land Adventures Cú Chulainn 06/17/11(Fri)11:24 No.15297454
Greetings fellow fa/tg/uys, I have a tale to tell. Last night whilst working, a co-worker and I grew bored of the monotony and decided to create an expansion for everyone's favorite traditional game: Candy Land. We wanted to make Candy Land a place where four heroes could rise from humble beginnings and become heroes.

In short, we created Candy Land Adventures.

It is a 4 player game (although a 5th person could join to control the NPC Baddies) that involves each player selecting one of 4 unique characters (Sir Cinnamon the Red, Lord Lemon the Yellow, Lady Lime the Green, and Baronet Berry the Blue) and try to beat everyone else to the Candy Castle. Pretty simple in essence, since it's the exact premise as Candy Land.

However, the evil Lord Licorice, in an attempt to rule all of Candy Land, has created an army of Baddies, little monsters that terrorize Candy Land in hopes of bringing down our four heroes and plunging Candy Land into darkness for all of eternity.

I will post the rules and the 4 heroes' stats in the upcoming posts. This is what happens when you are bored at work, gentlemen.

    What You Need:

    A Candy Land Board Game
    2 6-Sided Dice (henceforth referred to d6s), 1 Red (Player d6), 1 Black (Baddie d6)

    Terminology:

Baddie: Any enemy that you have to fight.

Hit Points (HP): The amount of damage a character or baddie can take before s/he is defeated.

Strong: The stat that determines attack accuracy and damage rolls. Any die roll involving Strong is referred to as a Strong die (dice) or a Strong d6.

Quick: The stat that determines dodging defense and attack speed rolls. Any die roll involving Quick is referred to as a Quick die (dice) or a Quick d6.

Tough: The stat that determines hit points and resilience. Any die roll involving Tough is referred to as a Tough die (dice) or a Tough d6.

Heal: The stat that determines healing rolls. Any die roll involving Heal is referred to as a Heal die (dice) or a Heal d6.

    Start Up:

Each player selects one of four characters. Each character has some preset stats and a unique ability (to be detailed in later posts and in images). Everyone then rolls a Tough d6 and adds the result to their Tough score. The number becomes the character's hit points.

Players then roll Quick to determine the turn order. In case of a tie, the player with the highest Quick score goes first. Moving across the board is the same as in traditional Candy Lane, except that every square has a chance of a Baddie appearing on it (except site squares such as the Peppermint Forest, they are safe squares). Whenever a player lands on a square, he must roll the Baddie die, and if a 4, 5, or 6 is rolled, he must draw a Baddie card from the deck and fight it.

(If there is a person playing as the Baddies, he rolls the Baddie die and draws the card instead).

    >>15297524

    Combat:

Combat: The player whose character is engaged in combat rolls the red player die, and another player (or the Baddie Master, who I suppose would be Lord Licorice) rolls the black Baddie die. To determine who goes first, both people roll Quick, and the higher result goes first. In case of a tie, the player always goes first.

The attack rolls a die and adds his Strong score to see if he can land a hit. The defender rolls a die and adds his Quick die to see if he can dodge it. In the case of a tie, the defender wins and the attack misses.

To roll for damage, the attacker rolls Strong again and deals damage to the defender's HP equal to the result of the roll. The defender rolls for Tough to determine how much damage he resists. He subtracts his result from the attacker's roll, and the amount left over (minimum of 1 point of damage dealt) is dealt to the defender's HP.

When a Baddie dies, it is removed from the deck and the player that defeated it gains 1 Baddie Token. After 5 tokens are gathered, a player may trade them in to increase one of their abilities or their HP by 1.

If the player wishes to flee from battle, he must roll for Quick and get an 8 or higher as a result (for most players this is a roll of 5 or 6 on the die).

(Note: The Cards are rough drafts and the images will obviously be replaced, once I find better pictures or a drawfag becomes interested and draws some stuff up for me)

    >>15297550

Healing: A player may choose to skip their turn (provided they are not trapped in the molasses swamp or lost in the Lollipop Forest) and roll a Heal die, adding their heal score to their HP. During battle, a player may roll a Heal die instead of attacking.

Player Defeat: Whenever a player's HP is reduced to 0, he must return to the last special location (Peppermint Forest, Gumdrop Mountains, etc.) he passed and start again from there, with no Baddie tokens and all of his ability scores reset to their original values. He must also reroll his HP.

The first one to the Candy Castle wins!

It's a pretty straight forward and easy to pick up alteration to the game, requiring only 2 dice, the Baddie Deck, and some paper. For those who want the full experience, they can print out the character cards as well.

The only thing I really need any help on is making Baddies. There will be a fairly even mix of trash fodder, mediocre shock troops, and elite enemies throughout the deck, drawn at random. The rules for applying stats is such:

Trash: Stat Minimum 1, Maximum 3. Total of all stats cannot exceed 10. They are weaker than the players.

Mediocre: Stat Minimum 3, Maximum 5. Total of all stats cannot exceed 15. They are at the same level as the players.

Elite: Stat Minimum 4, Maximum 6. Total of all stats cannot exceed 20. They are stronger than the players.

Baddies have abilities as well, but I'm not sure how I'm going to go about setting them up. Most of the deck (which will be 30 to 60 cards) will be Mediocre Baddies (50%), then Trash (30%), then Elite (20%), ideally.

So /tg/, do you want to help me recreate childhood memories?

Not really, but I imagine it would work a lot like regular combat, but against another player. If a player defeats a player, then the loser would have to go ALL THE WAY back to the beginning, and the winner would get 2 Baddie Tokens I guess.

I'll think on it, but for now I must go to work.

I have an idea for Checkers. You still field the same pieces, but now you have a list of "tactics" which let you move the pieces in different ways. Some are more expensive than others, and every turn you gain "tactic points" which let you use these tactics. This way, you have more options and the game becomes about managing your points wisely.

    Hp 2
    Strong 2
    Tough 1

    Heal 3

On defeat, the loud crunch of the broken Kit Cat beckons another creature. Roll a d6, on a 6 the Licorice Lord (player 5) draws another baddie and fights the player again

    Pop Rockets

    Hp 1
    Strong 5
    Tough 1
    Quick 4
    Heal 1

When defeated, Pop Rockets explode dealing damage to combatant and any players in an adjacent space. The combatant may only add one half (rounded down) of their tough to their tough roll, given they weren’t braced for impact.

    Fundip pot

    Hp 3
    Strong 1
    Tough 3
    Quick 1
    Heal 1

When a player attacks the fundip pot, they must roll a d6. On a 6, their attack fails and they fall into the boiling fundip. The player takes an attack from the dip when this happens.

    >>15297762

I used a font called Mistral, then Bolded it. And yes, the baddies should be a little different than the hero cards.

Also, for any potential drawfags, I have some ideas for the hero art:

Lord Lemon the Yellow: A samurai with a katana and wakazashi, and a half of a lemon as a hat. Primary color would be yellow, obviously.

Sir Cinnamon the Red: A medieval knight with a two handed axe. The haft of the axe is a stick of cinnamon.

Lady Lime the Green: Another knight style figure with a big shield and a spear. The only thing I could think of for her to incorporate her flavor is lime-shaped breast plates, but we can work on that one.

Baronet Berry the Blue: She gets a staff or something. Outside of that, no idea.

Also, should we replace Lord Lemon's Fleet of Foot with an ability to roll 2 Quick dice for initiative in battle, the chance to dodge an opponent in battle, or keep it the way it is? Right now it seems like he'd be able to get to the Castle right away.

I was also thinking about giving every hero 2 abilities to help them stand out against the Baddies some more. Thoughts?

I like the idea of an end boss, but I'm having a hard time visualizing numbers right now, but also because I can't see the game board. Is this version of Lord Licorice beatable if a player fails to defeat him, and is reduced to starting stats? If not, or if it requires stupidly lucky rolls, he should be changed or toned down. Otherwise you can end up with each of the players stuck and unable to defeat the end baddy.

Also, If I recall correctly, some candyland cards have 2 colors on them. Should the players check for baddies twice?

    Cream Soda
Discard this card to instantly heal 5 HP

but awesome ones can be like

    Peppermint Lumberjack (Cohort)
Discard this card to summon a Peppermint Lumberjack to assist you in battle.

    HP: 8
    Strong: 5, Quick 4, Tough: 4, Heal: 2

You could draw one when you defeat an Elite Baddie, or maybe when you land on a named space.

It would have to be 90% trash, like one time boosts to a roll. Add 1 to your next Strong Roll etc. Then have named one battle cohorts like King Candy, the Blue Fairy, Princess Lollipop, Peppermint Lumberjack. If you actually manage to draw one of those it would give you a good chance of actually beating Lord Licorice.

I think Lord Lemon's bonus should apply to dodging rather than initiative or movement. Initiative seems like it would be underpowered for this game, and movement would be pretty OP, given that it's a race to the finish.
Unless we use Lord Licorice as an end boss, in which case the extra movement would actually be a weakness, since you'd accumulate fewer Baddie Tokens to boost your stats before you get there.
Either way, a dodge bonus is probably the most balanced option.

How's this for an elite baddie?

    Black Licorice Knight
    Elite
    HP: 9
    Strong: 6
    Quick: 4
    Tough: 5
    Heal: 4

Licorice Whip: When Black Licorice Knight hits with an attack, after damage is dealt, Black Licorice Knight and the player roll Quick dice against each other. If Black Licorice Knight wins, the player subtracts 1 from all Strong dice he or she rolls until the beginning of his or her next turn.

I'm pleasantly surprised this thread has lasted for 2 days. Anyway, we still have a bit of work ahead of us. We need to stat out around 19 more Baddies and draw them up (or find appropriate pictures). And if there is someone who could design a good looking card template so we're not using one from MtG, that'd be great too (but lower priority).

And for the rulebook PDF (which I'm working on), I think it would be fun if we made personalities for the 4 heroes. So far I have:

Sir Cinnamon: Hot tempered by noble
Lord Lemon: Stand-offish and aloof (couldn't think of something that went well with Lemons except sour, which isn't a heroic trait)
    Lady Lime: Don't know
    Baronet Berry: Kind and sweet

    ... And updated Swedish Piranhas

That's all I have for now.

Our checklist now is as follows:

    Baddies:
    Elite Baddies: 4/5
    Moderate Baddies: 3/15
    Trash Baddies: 4/10
Lord Licorice: Rough Draft, probably needs refining.

Artwork: We need some more of that.
Playtesting: Shouldn't be too hard, I'll have to actually BUY Candy Land sometime in the near future.

    Misc:
    Item Cards?
    PvP Rules?
Possibly looking over the 5 tokens to 1 trait upgrade. Downsize to a 3:1 ratio for faster "leveling"?

I have to work until 7 EST, so I'll be back on later tonight. If someone could give me some shameless bumps (or better yet, good bumps!) I'd much appreciate it. Might be able to borrow an iPhone from time to time to check up on the thread.

Actually, come to think of it, would it work to have just five types of Baddie at each tier, and just differentiate by copies?

Like, 4 copies each of five different kinds of Trash Baddie, 3 copies each of five different kinds of Moderate Baddie, and five unique Elite Baddies? Then we'd have a total Baddie Deck of 40 cards -- 20 Trash Baddies, 15 Moderate Baddies, and 5 Elite Baddies. Plus Lord Licorice as the end boss, of course. Anyway, I think a little repetition in the Baddie Deck wouldn't be too bad, and it would be a lot easier than trying to figure out enough different kinds of Baddie to fill an entire deck with no duplicates.
Of course, if we do get some good inspiration for more types of Baddie, we can certainly add a little more variety, but we shouldn't beat ourselves up over it if we can't fill it out enough.

    HP 3
    Strong 2
    Quick 1
    Tough 3
    Heal 1

    Special ability:
Suprise inside! When you draw from the loot deck draw two cards. Choose one and shuffle the other back into the loot deck.

Alright Iike the concept of the loot deck. Also on that theme

    Wonder ball
    Mediocre baddy
    HP 5
    Strong 2
    Quick 2
    Tough 5
    Heal 1

    Special ability:
Always rolling! After the wonder ball makes an attack both players roll speed die, if the wonder ball rolls higher it rolls away and is shuffled back into the baddie deck.

I wonder what's inside a wonder ball! When you draw from the loot deck draw three cards. Choose one and shuffle the other two back into the loot deck.

    Pop-khorne
    Trash baddie

    HP: 2
    Strong: 2
    Quick: 2
    Tough: 2
    Heal: 2

When defeated, pop-khorne explode in deliciousness. Player takes 1 hp damage unless they roll quickness 4 or higher.

If we generate rules for multiple monsters, pop-khorne should come in multiples.

    Herbs and Spices
    Trash baddie

When the player opens this trapped treasure chest, it sprays them with 11 delicious herbs and spices.
The next monster the player fights is at +1 to all stats, and the player may not flee. (Or may only flee on a 6, I'm not clear on game balance.)
Herbs and Spices does not count as defeating a baddie, nor does it provide loot.

Very nice. Here's Ookie Monster in card form.

Figured I'd also make this a general update post. I rewrote the rules so that Trash Baddies have 1 Token as a reward, Moderates have 2, and Elites have 3 Tokens. Stronger enemies should have higher rewards, right?

    Baddies Update:

Elite Baddies: Still 4/5. Just need 1 more and we're good. Need artwork for Khorne the Betrayer (rename KandyKhorne the Betrayer?) and Dr. Vanilla and Mr. Chocolate.

Moderate Baddies: 10/15. Need 5 more Moderate Baddies and need art for the Abominable Snowcone and Neapolitan Bonaparte.

Trash: 7/10. Need 3 more Trash Baddies and art for the Fundip Pot and Pixie Stickler.

Item Cards: I'm leaving item cards up to you guys. I figure 20 Items/Loot would be a good start. Characters shouldn't be able to have more than 2 items at a time (to prevent one person from hoarding them all).

(Note: There are some other Baddies in this thread I didn't make cards for yet. I want to see some Items before I make Baddies that revolve around Item cards).

A 1d4chan page would also be great, but I'm not too concerned about that yet. I won't beg for it, because if I can't make it myself I won't ask someone else to until I've at least tried to learn.

I figure you can either get items from a) defeating baddies, or b) trade in Baddie Tokens for items (ratio of say, 2:1), that way players can spend their tokens on a multitude of things. There should also be a limit on how many items someone can have to prevent one person from hoarding all of them. I suggested 2 or 3 earlier.

Also, updated the wiki page with Jack the Twizzler (using this one>>15347626).

    Our checklist is as follows:

Baddies: Elite (5/5), need Kandy Khorne the Betrayer and Dr. Vanilla & Mr. Chocolate drawn; Moderate (10/15), need Neapolitan Bonaparte and Abominable Snowcone drawn, and the Ookie Monster too; Trash (7/10), need Pixie Stickler and Fundip Pot drawn.

Items: Probably make 10~15 of them, most will be of average power (average power has yet to be determined, a few will be weaker, and a few will be stronger than average. If one of the items isn't Mr. Mint's axe, I'll be sad.

And we need to stat out this guy

Also, is Lord Licorice supposed to have six fingers on his right hand?

Should items get a different card frame? Maybe a gold one? Perhaps Elite Baddies can have a chance of dropping an item if they're defeated, like the Knight's Whip, Dr Vanilla's Cane, or some sort of twizzler-knife from Jack. Other items could be stacked as cards and drawn at random if certain item-get conditions are met.

The stats can actually stay, since some of them will likely be weapons, therefore granting a bonus to stats (like a sword that would grant +1 Strong) so it'd look like this: (see pic)

Don't know why drawing a card that says you drew a card would grant you +2 HP and +1 Heal, but that's neither here nor there.

I drew the picture just for my amusement, but I had an actual idea for "Recursion" now. You can shuffle all Items you own into the item stack, including "Recursion", then draw (three or four?) Item cards and select a number of them equal to the number of items you shuffled back (Max. 2).

Since you can possibly pick Recursion from the cards you draw for Recursion, it may actually get pretty recursive.

    Let's see, item ideas:
    Covetous Mimic
When you gain this item, select one non-elite item owned by another player. This item's bonuses become equal to that item's and it gains the same effect. If no other player owns an item when you draw this card, you may shuffle this card into the Item stack and draw a new Item card.

    "Valiant" Retreat
At the start of combat, you can shuffle this card back into the item stack to immediately end combat and gain 1 Baddie token. You do not gain Baddie tokens for combat. You cannot use this Item against Lord Licorice or Gloppy, the Master of Molasses.

    Dr. Vanilla's Chocolixer
Stats are -1(+1) Strong, +1(-1) Quick, -1(+1) Tough, +1(-1) Heal.
During combat, at the start of each turn roll a die. If you roll an even number, use this item's normal stats. If you roll an odd number, use the stats in the bracket.

    Mulligan
If you are defeated in combat, you can shuffle this item into the Item stack and the opposing Baddie into the Baddie stack. A new Baddie is drawn and combat begins, ignoring the previous combat. You cannot use this item against Lord Licorice.

Alternatively, Mulligan could allow you to shuffle it back to redo any one roll, or you can restart your entire turn.

I hate to do this, but I have to make this quibble: "Baronet" is a male title. The female version is "Baronetess". Since that's kind of a mouthful to say, you might just want to go with "Baroness" for Berry's name in order to retain the alliteration.

Anyway. Enemy ideas. These are designed explicitly to support conflict between players that does not involve directly fighting one another.

    York's Peppermint Pirates
    Strong 4
    Quick 4
    Tough 4
    Heal 3
Letter of Marzipan: When York's Peppermint Pirates are drawn, the drawing player may discard 1 Baddie Token and choose another player. That player must fight York's Peppermint Pirates instead.

    Sour Patchers
    Strong 4
    Quick 3
    Tough 5
    Heal 2
Hundred Grand: At any time when Sour Patchers are fighting, any player may discard an item in order to roll a die, add their Heal score, and add the result to Sour Patchers' current hit points.

    Juju Bees
    Strong 1
    Quick 3
    Tough 2
    Heal 1
Strong Juju: If a player successfully flees from Juju Bees, the next time any other player would draw from the Baddie Deck they instead draw three times and fight the Baddie of the fleeing player's choice.

    Skittlers
    Strong 1
    Quick 1
    Tough 1
    Heal 1
Taste the Rainbow: When Skittlers are defeated, the defeating player may immediately choose another player to fight another Skittlers. No Baddie Token is awarded for winning against the new Skittlers.

    >>15368005

Yeah, I'll stat it up if you don't have plans for it already. I'd make it so you have to "tame" the item by defeating it before you can equip it or use it.

I statted out the Gumbite Gauntlets. As an item, it's pretty intense, but you do have to "tame" it beforehand, so I think it'll be fine. It has one of the few active abilities in the game (so far most character and baddie abilities are passive or trigger).

Note: Gumbite Gauntlets do not count towards the 30 Baddie card limit, since they are drawn from the item deck.

Speaking of, what are the rules for Items? I suggest making them a reward for traded Baddie Tokens, much like trait and HP increases (stick with the 3 Tokens:1 Item/Trait ratio?

Alright, a bump before I leave to play some D&D. Here's a checklist of what we need:

    >2 Moderate Baddies
    >Artwork for Fundip Pot, Juju Bees, Skittlers, Abominable Snowcone, Neapolitan Bonaparte, York's Peppermint Pirates, Ookie Monster, and KandyKhorne the Betrayer.
    >17 more items
    >Artwork for Dr. Vanilla's Chocolixer and Mulligan
    >New Lord Licorice stats and probably some original artwork for that too.

Some of the preexisting artwork could use some backgrounds, but that's less important. We're almost done making things and can soon commence playtesting!

I figured certain spaces would reward Item cards just for landing on them, or at random after beating Moderate Baddies and you could spend Tokens to draw from the Item stack any time you landed on a safe (pink) space.

Then, there'd be the Elite Items, gained specifically from Elite Baddies. If you defeat Dr Vanilla and Mr Chocolate, you either roll or spend some Tokens and get the Chocolixer if you succeed.

Gumdrop Glasses could let you shuffle them back when you're drawing a Baddie or Picture card to let you instead draw two cards and then pick between them.

Candy Cane could let you shuffle it to either move one space or just ignore any hazard you land on once.

The cone helmet and peanut plate would just be +Tough.

Jelly beans would be a heal item.

The whip could be a watered down Black Licorice Whip.

    Tough:5

Effect: "on the roll of a D6 if the number is above 4 the adventurer's Quick is temporarily lowered by 1"

basically a marshmallow beholder covered in melted chocolate.

Considering the Artwork, perhaps Valiant Retreat should work like this:

When combat begins, after the Baddie card has been drawn, you may shuffle this Item back into the Item deck to immediately end combat. You gain (only) one Baddie token and move backwards one space. You cannot use this item against Lord Licorice or Gloppy, the Master of Molasses.

The idea with giving out a Baddie Token was to make it seem worthwhile to keep around instead of just fleeing. Of course, I have admitted I'm bad at game balance so you can disregard that.
