    176 KB Game of Thrones...by email? Guybrarian 07/21/11(Thu)21:01 No.15662033
Okay, so, I took a look at the the A Song of Ice and Fire RPG, and the huge thing that stood out for me was House creation, which got me to thinking...

How awesome would it be to do an online campaign of just Houses against Houses? Play the game of thrones as it was meant to be played.

I'd imagine it would be played by email, updated either once or twice weekly. Each time period would be something, like, a week in game time, with certain events like battles being done with private emails being exchanged rapidly?

    What would you say, /tg/?
    >> Anonymous 07/21/11(Thu)21:05 No.15662061
    I could get behind this.
    >> Guybrarian 07/21/11(Thu)21:09 No.15662089
    >>15662061

Scale might be an issue, since the RPG assume you to be playing a minor house. There would also be several questions to answer.

What's the political state of Westeros?

How do we deal with the Iron Throne? Who controls that?

How the fuck do I organize this?
    >> Anonymous 07/21/11(Thu)21:12 No.15662113
    OH MY GOD!

I'm in. I don't care what it takes, but I will play the crap out of this. I didn't even read the books, but this just seems so cool.
    >> Guybrarian 07/21/11(Thu)21:14 No.15662127
    >>15662113

The goal would be, I think, to minimize the necessity of reading the books, but I'd love to have people be able to at least roleplay. Because, hey, it is an awesome setting, and I love to see good roleplaying, even if it's just shceming, plotting, and /tg/ being a bunch of awesome tactical grognards.

And I use grognard in the most loving of ways

Another thing to consider would be that each player would start off with a minor house, and the first few turns would be about gaining dominance over your small portion of the seven kingdoms. Become a lord of your region, warden of the west/north/south/east, perhaps?
    >> Anonymous 07/21/11(Thu)21:23 No.15662186
I think I was in a game kind of like this once on a forum. We all controlled minor houses set around the riverlands, with the nominal objective of becoming the dominant family in the region.

As I recall, I was doing pretty well up until the GM vanished.

One thought was to just do a single region, but I tihnk the series works better as an "expansive" setting.
    >> Guybrarian 07/21/11(Thu)21:27 No.15662226
    >>15662212

hey, if I get enough interest in it, and I can figure out how to freaking organize it, I'll run this shit so fast.
    >> Anonymous 07/21/11(Thu)21:32 No.15662255
    >>15662214
The series might work better that way, but there are dozens of houses in Westeros, perhaps hundreds when you include all the tiny unimportant ones. If you make the game expansive and the players geographically diverse, then logically you have to include the opportunity for interaction with everyone in the setting... which could get very messy, very quickly, since all the NPCs would have their own plots and motivations.

To make this actually work you'd therefore have to limit its scope. Choose one of the seven kingdoms and stick to that region, with each player controlling one house within it and the GM controlling the dominant reigning house and several additional minor houses. People from the other kingdoms can influence the region, of course, but they wouldn't be as dominant a force in the game and would primarily be present as single characters representing their entire house in the region than houses proper.
    >> Guybrarian 07/21/11(Thu)21:35 No.15662274
    >>15662255

True, that may work. It'd also be a lot easier to limit the scope.

    Indeed, that's the one.

For house setup, would you go strictly by the rules or make some modifications to accommodate the type of game? For example, rolling 7d6+kingdom modifiers works well when there's one house and everyone's in it, but it could easily result in highly unbalanced houses when everyone does it. Perhaps implementing some kind of point buy system would be better?

Of course, the GM could just roll all house stats and if a player gets unlucky, they should just suck it up and play the Game of Thrones to win.

Apologies if this is too off topic, but how does the system handle magic?

I have a custom setting campaign I want to run invovling corruption/taint, but DnD seems too bombasticly powerful and magic-item oriented for what I'm trying to do.
    >> Anonymous 07/21/11(Thu)22:06 No.15662584
    >>15662547
It doesn't. There is basically no magic. Its a very very low powered setting. One of the nice things about the books is that with a few exceptions(The dragons, Dondarrion, the Others) magic has no real discernable effects on the world. Much of what is attributed to magic is often set in motion by schemes planned well before the magic is set in play.

The North is big, but it's big like Canada is big, IE empty. You might technically have a lot of territory and a fair amount of houses, but you could definitely get more action in balmier climes.

Of course ,you could be anywhere and have minor houses pounding the hell out of each other. It doesn't really matter where if it's big houses going for the Iron Throne, as they will interact with each other regardless of where their actual power base is.

The stormlands or riverlands could be cool. But a game in the North or in Dorne could have a much more isolated feel, potentially letting our kingdom have a self-contained war or two while no one else really cares. It could give us an excuse to worry more about local politics and less about the rest of Westeros- which would be very difficult in one of the central Kingdoms.

I'm GMing this right now for a group. They are literally playing the Game of Thrones and haven't even read the books. Right now they're taking advantage of an in-house rebellion of a neighboring family to set up a Lord that will probably pledge fealty as a banner house.

    Matters for consideration.

What timeline are we going with here? Given that we're doing a region-specific game, it would be relatively easy to break free of the novels' timelines entirely and go for another period, thereby avoiding pesky things like needing to remotely respect canon reality and characters from the books showing up.

We could even potentially dial things back all the way to before the Targaryens showed up, making our ruler an actual ruler of a Kingdom, rather than beholden to the Iron Throne and thus merely one part of a larger empire.

problem with that would be the existence of Magic since People know magic existed back then to create the castles and The Wall so you'd need to alter all the magic rules to fit in stuff like Valyrians and The children of the forest. On the plus side though Military forces would be made of awesome. Since they wouldn't be afraid of stuff like Dire wolf packs and Giants armies (in the North anyway)

    Also vote for Dorne

The reason I like the idea of the North being our setting is that it's so massive it gives us tons of room for fucking around on our own. As well as wide enough that there could be varied regions and stuff we each rule over. Plus it reminds me of the Scottish Highlands and that'd just be ballin'.

Other than that though, I'll play anywhere that gives us space and room to breathe.

The rules of the game make everyone's holdings rather tiny. Really, really tiny. Even in the North, you end up with even the greatest lords controlling only a few dozen square miles of lands.

Admittedly, we might decide that's just dumb and change it for our purposes here.

    >>15663154
We can probably ad-hoc that if we have to, though. And given where the storyline is now, I think we have a reasonably solid idea of what most of the various magics consisted of. Even in a relatively high-magic era sorcery was never the decisive factor for any lords, as far as I know.

Magic never really was around in the Seven Kingdoms, by the itme the Andals got there. If we run this pre-Targs, it'll probably be 500 years before the books, so no magic, just a lot of what we're used to, with no dragons or Iron Thrones.

Agree. Even when magic was present, it doesn't seem to have played a huge role. I think it's something we can generally ignore. In the game I'm GMing I'm requiring that any magic events that my players use require a fate point, and even then I'm requiring some sort of magic knowledge (it could be praying to the gods, if anything.) I've also added the discretionary restriction that it be subtle rather than overt, like using magic to brew a particularly strong poison rather than shooting fireballs and lightning bolts.

Any interactions involving the rest of Westeros would probably be mostly trade or things. Tournaments would be called at points, and you can hold them, as per the rules, though I'll set rules for that.

Well, if it's "hurr you have a small village" then it clearly is stupid. Still, just because you technically own 10,000 square miles of territory doesn't mean all of it is actually productive. A happy medium would be best. It would take some extrapolation, naturally. A good starting point would be looking at the map and verified towns, and then filling in the various other settlement based on the relative population density from real world historical situations.

(I know that's kind of complicated, but it would be worth it. Even just a skim to get an idea of the relative population densities in the real world analogs of Westerosi regions would be good. You wouldn't commit to detailing every bit of settlement anyway. Just knowing about how often you would see people traveling, and about how many people lived in an area would be enough.)

Depending upon the era that we set the game in, we might be able to basically ignore the existence of most non-PC houses, except for the region's liege. There can be some NPCs, but for the most part I'm expecting the map to be filled mostly by players regardless of what region we're in.

This is why I want to do Dorne (already voted) since they only have a one house properly fleshed out within the novels we don't need to acknowledge all the houses. On the other hand with the North there are a large number of houses already fleshed out as being very old (Karstarks, Umbers, boltons, Manderly's). Although they do give good NPC interactions.

Doesn't that kind of clash with a huge part of the whole house-building concept? In the standard Song of Ice and Fire setting set in game terms, White Harbor is an awesome port that makes tons of money because House Manderly rolled high on Lands and Wealth, then invested them into a city that could make bank for them- not because the location itself providing a bonus.

I would strongly prefer to build our own houses and holdings properly rather than to Frankenstein together the house building rules with some ad hoc bonuses based upon cannibalized and invented information about existing houses.

That kind of effect will naturally emerge from the rules already, for the most part. To use your example, harbor cities have more income because you buy Port upgrades for the holding, which gives a bonus to house Fortune rolls and a bonus to Wealth. We don't need to make up a bunch of new and super-detailed modifiers.

I mean, we could, obviously, but it would basically be throwing a bunch of houserules onto a functioning system. I'm reluctant to do it unless someone who has played extensively with the system believes that the mechanics as they stand have flaws in need of correcting.

It's almost impossible to actually get the highest ranks anyway. The average roll is 24.5, you can add 1d6 to only one of your categories. Even if your regional bonus is +20 for a given state, it's still hard to break 50 anywhere.

Also, the examples given are kind of ridiculous. Fielding armies of the size that some of the houses in the books do requires Power scores much greater than 70, let alone having the numerous banner houses that the various great houses do. So all the benchmarks should be taken with a grain of salt.

Ok, defense became a 34. Plus the modifier from being North makes it... a 39. Good defenses with, almost certainly, a castle, along with a few other strong points. Roads and rivers provide easy transportation. Alternatively, natural terrain features, such as mountains or swamps, provide additional fortification.

Influence becomes a uh... 37. Minor house again, which makes sense.

Law becomes The typical level of Law throughout much of Westeros. Crime is common but not out of control.

Power turns into A modest force of soldiers, including some trained troops. Which is where it was before.

Population and wealth both also remain the same.

So... a decent idea behind the house at least. Even if we don't use the generic charts out of the book, it at least gives me an idea other than just the name for the house.

Law and order above all, small numbers of troops, and a powerful castle.

Man, I've been playing around with the next few tables and holy shit. This thing is fucking awesome. Using that table and the basic ideas it throws at you gave me a lot of really cool building blocks to make a nice background for the house. It's turned them from just some coat of arms with some fancy words, into a house that makes sense for their words, their position, and how they started.

I am seriously fucking digging this series of charts. I'm seriously tempted to toss my results up in this thread just to show the awesome that came about.

Tha RPG heraldry generator helps A TON. Still, as I did before, if you can't find what you want, do what you can. Then, find what you need (in my case an otter and shells) and find coloring sheets on google images. If you copy and past them, they should be black/white so you just use the fill tool and resize.

I think everyone should wait and we will all generate our heraldry at the same time or something. Some things make more sense in the north than others.
