Riddle of Steel has mechanics that directly encourage roleplaying while not forcing it. It's a pretty good system, I think.

And Combat is faster IF you know the system. If you don't, it can be pretty slow, because there's so much going on.

Almost certainly, though it doesn't cover the full scale of the system. If I recall, Galt ran a very short battle between two very direct high level combatants last lasted literally two seconds. In the real game, with two different minds behind the fighters, stuff gets a lot more technical and probing.

Alright, here's what I'm going to do. I've got two fellows here who I've just made. They're much lower level than the other examples I gave, because that'd be too easy. These aren't terribly experienced men, in fact I think it's totally possible that you could make either of them, or better characters, at Character Creation.
I've ignored Gifts for the purposes of this, because Accuracy and Careful are broken as hell.

I'm going to have them fight to the death for you lot's amusement. And I'm going to see if I can't post cuts from the book for the salient parts of their equipment, to make it easier to follow. So without further ado: Our gladiators!

Now, first for the spotlight on Eisenhund. The man's packing one of the most iconic pieces of equipment in the world of fechten', the sword and the shield.
Now, Norse Sword's pretty sweet. You can see its ATN of 6 on the cut there, and its Str+1 damage. It's a bit weak on the thrust, but it's not like this guy was going to be beating the pikeman on the thrust to begin with.

The target shield isn't actually better at defending than the sword is, as both the sword and the shield have a DTN of 6, but the real point of it is that he can use it to parry missiles, and to defend while he attacks without using really high level skills.

Mr. IronDog here is going to be heavily outreached, and his enemy is faster, but he's got a strong defensive game and he's a tough sumbitch. Will that be enough to pull him through? Let's take a look at his foe, and find out.

It's hard to do it without leaving a crippling deficiency behind. Technically, one is supposed to have a "high stat" and a "low stat" that cannot be equal to any of that character's other stats at creation, but this rule makes it very difficult to build serviceable sample characters.

Now over here, we've got Mr. Blackpool. The outlined weapon is the pike. It's a less pretty sight, if you catch my meaning.

Defensive TN of 10. Yowza. Attack ATN of 8 on the thrust isn't too great either, but it's about par for the course regarding polearms.
The Pike's real advantage though, is that it's got EL range. This isn't as tremendous of an equalizer as some say it should be, so for that, we've also given Blackpoole the advantage of being a bit quicker and more experienced.

In short: Eisenhund is stronger and tougher, and has a more versatile weapon, Blackpoole is faster and more skilled, and has a much longer weapon.

    >> John Galt 08/18/11(Thu)20:14 No.15984036
So, let's put them in a situation. Blackpoole done got himself lost when his army was crushed by another, while Eisenhund is just wandering bout looting the dead and robbing stragglers.

Conflict is inevitable. The two square off at long range, but aren't sure of how experienced the other is. Certainly, neither of them look like much, but banking on that has gotten men killed before.

So now, the time comes for the players controlling the two characters to throw down their offense/defense dice. They do this simultaneously. Both throw blue, because neither of them is sure they want to be the first to attack.

Now for those who might not know, the way those dice work is that the combatants throw them simultaneously at the beginning of the exchange.
-If one rolls red and the other rolls blue, then red attacks, and blue defense.
-If both roll red, then both attack at once, which can be disastrous.
-If both roll blue, as here... They circle for a minute, someone coughs, and they roll again.

    >>15984065
So, the two circle for a moment. Then, they roll again. This time, Blackpoole rolls red, while his opponent rolls blue! This means that he's on the offensive.

Now, Poolesy has a choice to make here. What's he going to do? He has the range advantage, and he's got the initiative, but his opponent has a shield, and might be very skillful. What is the wise choice?

He could just go all out and hope that he stabs the guy in the brain, but if it doesn't work, he's totally out of luck.
He could launch a probing strike, but risk it being blocked and his enemy rushing in
He could try try something clever, like stopping short, to scare his opponent a bit and lower his combat pool. This has no chance of killing the guy, but little chance of getting Blackpoole killed in return.

    What do y'all think?

Alright. Blackpoole, being fairly determined not to fall prey to the rookie mistake of having his weapon caught on a shield and then being stabbed in the balls, Stops Short with 3 dice.

Now this is a bastard of a complicated maneuver here to read, but it's actually rather simple.

Blackpoole rolls his WP (which is 3. Uh oh.) against Eisenhund's Perception (which is... 4.)
So he's rolling 3 dice at a difficulty of 4.

Eisenhund, meanwhile, must roll his Reflex (which is 6) against a difficulty of 10 (7+the number of dice Blackpoole spent from his combat pool, which was 3.)

Yikes. That's not simple at all!

So, Blackpool has 3 dice at difficulty 4.
Eisenhund has 6 dice at difficulty 10.
All of these are D10s, of course.

Who wants to roll, or shall I?

I'll wait a bit longer before I do it myself next time. As it stands, these results are conveniently the same! One success, to Blackpoole's two.

This means that Blackpoole succeeded, but with 2 successes instead of 3, as one is canceled out by Eisenhund. With a Margin of Success of 1, this means that he's "won" the engagement, and cost Eisenhund one die from his Combat Pool on this coming round.

Now to some of you, this might seem like it was a pretty awful deal. Blackpoole spent three dice, and only cost Eisenhund one, but as it stands he's made a successful attack, and denied the swordsman the chance to try anything funny in response to an honest thrust. Now, Eisenhund's turn on the offensive rolls up, after which a new round will start, and the Combat Pools of both sides will refresh.

Er, one to Blackpoole's three. Derp.

Anyway, it's Eisenhund's turn. Now let's review from his point of view.

This guy with a 15 foot long spear just sort of circled around him for a minute, and then feinted an attack, obviously out of fear to engage him.
Sounds like a pussy to me, and my name doesn't mean Iron Dog.

Eisenhund knows that that guy just spent more dice than him, but he's still down to 11. He could put 3 dice on a cut, and 6 on a guard, if he had to. The reach difference (Medium, Long, Very Long, Extremely Long) would cost him his remaining 3 dice, but he'd have a good defense, and a pretty solid attack to back it up.

Or he could try some sort of crazy jailhouse rush and throw caution to the wind. I'm betting on the former, whatsay you?

Ah, looking back I didn't make that clear enough.

The dice Blackpool spent didn't do anything for him, they made the other guy's roll harder. Moving it from a difficulty of 7, to a difficulty of 10.
His own roll was his WP against Eisenhund's pitiful Perception.

    >>15984310
    >>15984323
That's the salient point of it. He wanted to irk the man and goad him into attacking, but he didn't want to get close enough to risk it turning into an exchange of blows. Stop Short is special because it can't be attacked-through. I'm sure it all makes sense to dem HEMA nerds.

A good question, and a major negatory on that one. Neither party is actually aware of what the enemy's combat pool is, unless they somehow infer it from experience and observation.
All Eisenhund knows is how many dice Blackpoole has expended thusfar, and vice versa.

The masses have spoken! Now, seeing this, BlackPoole knows that he's in a pickle, but that he also has an opportunity. He could try to buy the initiative (he knows Eisenhund's Perception is terrible) attack through, but that probably wouldn't work, shields have awesome DTNs.

He could just try parrying, but that's a death sentence.

But what he can do, and with no cost to himself, is try to evade! It has no cost, since he's not wearing heavy armor, and it works better than trying to parry with that big goofy pike.

-Partial Evasion, at TN 7, will allow him to simply avoid the attack and continue as normal.

-Duck and Weave, at TN 9 (!!!) will allow him to dodge out of the way as well... But there are some scary bonus points to be had! If he succeeds at a Duck and Weave and defeats his enemy's attack dice, Eisenhund cannot use his shield during the next exchange. In addition, Eisenhund would suffer 1 shock damage (half of his pool, rounded down) because he counts as fumbling the attack.

So, there are the three options:
-Buy initiative and attack, which is balls-out insane
-Partial Evade for an easy escape, 11 dice at 7
-Daring Duck and Weave, with 11 dice at 9 against Eisenhund's 3 dice at 6!

I'm leaning towards the latter. Sounds ballsy, but pikemen don't always stay alive by being ballsy.
    >> John Galt 08/18/11(Thu)21:04 No.15984552
    Oh oh, this is important:

Blackpool has won initiative, but not for this immediately coming turn-rather, for the next exchange.

An exchange is sort of like a see-saw. Pool Refreshes, attack/defend, defend/attack. Whoever "won initiative" for that last exchange, by landing or blocking an attack in certain manners, is the Attacker during the next one.

This means that Blackpoole just launched his offensive maneuver, and Eisenhund... Didnt' really get to defend, but sort of did anyway.

Now, Eisenhund is up to the bat, and Blackpoole is defending, both with the remaining dice from their pools. This is why it's so important to preserve your combat pool on the offensive, because the other guy gets a chance to hit back before you can recover.

Duck and Weave. If we can get that shield out of the way, Eisenhund is in a world of shit. 11 dice is a lot to throw at a problem, and if swordsman rolls shitty, it's probably going to be the end of the line for him. Fail, and it doesn't look like the wound would be too nasty.

You are sir. And you know what that means.

    NEW ROUND
Blackpoole has the initiative, after successfully shortstopping the swordsman, and miraculously evading his attack! He's back up to 15 dice.

Eisenhund cannot block with his shield during the first turn of this exchange, and is at 11 dice because he counted as fumbling on his attack thanks to Duck & Weave's bullshit.

Blackpoole is up. It's Trollin' time, ladies and gentlemen.

    -Punch him in the dick
    -Punch him in the... Face
    -Punch him in the... Chest?
    (Punch here means stab brutally.)

What're you thinkin' boys? Devoting the full pool might be foolhardy, but there's definitely room to mess this sucker up with the dice advantage. And remember, if Eisenhund chooses to try and bum rush Blackpoole, he's suffering range penalties out the wazoo, making that unlikely.

Eisenhund sees which way the wind's blowing and, for alacrity's sake, parries with 6 dice. He wants to have enough left to try and avoid BlackPoole's inevitable counterattack, but he needs to get back on the offensive, and he's trusting in his good defense number here. Wait, really?

My understanding of it was that a combat round went: Refresh, Exchange, Exchange. And each Exchange consisted of a single action, either aggressive or defensive, by each party in the combat. Then between both rounds and exchanges, initiative goes to the winner of the previous exchange (which is why the loser of the first exchange needs to buy initiative if they want to attack in the second, and the rules note that the aggressor and defender "may" have changed between exchanges).

We'll give it to shishkabob MacGee on this one. 3 is Groin.

Now, with his Margin of Success of 2, Blackpoole does:
His strength (5)+weapon damage (2)+Margin(2) damage, for 9 total damage.
    VERSUS
Eisenhund's groin at Toughness (6)+Armor(1), total of 7.

That right there? That's a level 2 wound.

    BL: 8
    S: 8
    P: 10-WP (5)
    "Worse, much more blood."

Now, the BL is blood loss, which is awful, but we'll cover that in a minute. Might not even have to.

Shock is immediately subtracted from Eisenhund's combat pool. His remaining 5 dice for this round are gone, and 3 are subtracted from the NEXT round.

His Pain is simply subtracted from his maximum combat pool, so long as the wound remains.

The man has 0 dice left. Next turn, he'll be at 8 fewer than his usual total. He'll be at 4. And there's still one more exchange left. Blackpoole has 5 dice remaining, to Eisenhund's 0.

Well, Eisenhund had low pools, and low TNs. That's gambling territory. Blackpoole's high pools and high TNs are a bit more statistically stable, making him the perfect guy to take chances. One bad roll would, and did, completely screw Eisenhund. Eleven dice with nothing above nine is pretty rare, compared to the amount of times playing, say risk, where three dice tend to snake-eye at the worst time.

I do have four pretty awesome swordsmen prepared to die for you, but I could also slap together an Escrima fighter, a huge dane with an axe-anything you'd like. They just might not be as well made.

    OR....

I could do the Scruffian versus Ruffleman fight now, and come back tomorrow with a well tailored list of bludgeoning and axe-wielding fighters.

Alright folks, let's get this show on the road.

This here is a Schiavona, it's the toy Dusan is going to be using to carve up some Celt today. (Or so he hopes.)

It stands out from the other Cut & Thrust derivatives by having a pretty impressive defensive number, while retaining its Long range, and doing balanced damage. Dusan's shield is the same one Eisenhund had above. Let's hope it serves him better.

And here is the Backsword. Almost identical to the Slavic Saber, except shorter, and with a bit less room to thrust. Thrusting is for girls anyway.

It's got a good DTN, and is one of the few C&T derivatives that actually retained Medium range. A lot of people get worried about that when they see that, but there's a lot of room for stuff to get sticky when it comes to swords, so I wouldn't sweat too much for the Scottsman.

Byron is stronger, and about as fast. Dusan has slightly better reach, a shield, and an awesome Perception score. It's going to be rough, and I honestly don't know how this one's gonna be. Let's begin, shall we?

A dimensional rift opens. From the hideous depths of Bosnia, Timotic is flung into the middle of a Scottish cow pasture. The Reds have it. Gentlemen, it's party time! Red/Red is the most fun you're going to have all week!

Here's how a Red/Red works. Both sides must declare their attacks. A man with a shield can defend, yes, though he must still obey all of the rules of defending. Then, a Reflex test is rolled at the attack number of the weapon being used. The winner hits first.

In event of a tie... Well.

So, what should Timotic do? He's got a shield, so the obvious answer is to try and defend himself and cut at the same time, but he has to split it 2/1, so he can't just put 10 on defense and 10 on attack.

I'd say, 5 on a cut to the legs (he left his knees all exposed! How nice of him!) and 10 on a block. This leaves 2 dice left in case stuff goes pear-shaped.

MacTavish is in a rougher spot. He's got 17 dice, and an activation cost of 1 to attack, thanks to reach. He's also really, really got to avoid getting hit here. His best bet: Hit first! A thrust to the face with 10 dice should be enough.

So, both have Reflex 7. Both cut at 7. Dusan has 1 step of reach, so he gets 1 extra die, MacTavish thrusts for 1 as well

...This works actually. Dusan is at short range with his shield, which means he'd get 1 die at ATN 6 to land a thump with the shield. It does ST+1 bludgeoning damage I believe.

If he hits, then he forces the Scottsman into short range, where he gets penalties for his weapon's length. Even more severe ones than he'd get for being outranged. And to split the difference: How about a shield to the groin? WHO'S WITH ME?

    P 9-WP (1)

So, a quick analysis of turn 1: The two charged at each other. Timotic swung poorly at the Scotsman's legs. Presumably, the Scott leaped over them to thrust, Sparta style, straight into the Serb's shield. The Serb then did a baseball slide or something, moving that shield STRAIGHT into MacTavish's babymaker.

    ROUND 2
Round two begins, MacTavish is at Short Range and down 2 points (1 from pain, 1 from excess shock.)
Timotic is at full, and at his range with that lovely shield. And he has the initiative.

What should our intrepid Serb do with his initiative?

If that isn't decisive, I don't know what is. I love it.

Byron throws red. His plan is to throw a cut at 15 at a cut to zone IV: Upward slash to the groin! if even one connects, it's lights out for the demon.

Dusan spends 2 dice to activate the Counter maneuver with 15 dice! You haven't seen this one yet kids! It's like a regular parry, except that if you succeed, you get to use your enemy's dice against him in an immediate attack! If you don't match his successes with the parry, though, ALL of his successes connect, and yours vanish into thin air.

It's a hail mary. But if it works, it'll be sweet.

    MacTavish has 15 at 7

    Timotic has 15 at 6.

No wait. I missed the first set of rolls up there.
    Sorry, it's 6 vs 4.
So only a margin of 2. Thank God. That's 5 less than I thought, that's only Strength 9.

Which is a level 3 bludgeoning wound to the face. That ain't so bad. Probably just unconscious.

It's not unreasonable to assume that at a table, with people more familiar with the system, the pace is far, FAR faster.

It can move faster if everyone knows what they're doing, and, more importantly, when you aren't waiting a few minutes every roll for other people to decide what to do and then roll for you.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that with one eye, half of his already diminished pool, and BL probably floating around 10, Mister MacTavish couldn't fight anyone even if he wanted to.

    SLAVIC SCHIAVONI

The Doge will be pleased, at least.

He's at bloodloss 8, his halved pool is 7, with pain that's 6. With his 10 shock, he's going to have no pool for basically two full rounds.

The man is dead unless he plays dead. I think we can call that a victory.

His solution to most every problem was simply to grab it and slowly choke the life out of it. Or throw it at another problem.

The initial encounter, where he basically tore a bandit limb from limb, is still a treasured memory.

And for the rest of his life he was known as Byron the Bloody Hideous. The common story of how he was wounded involved him being attacked by a maddened circus bear and putting it down with his mighty blade, but only his closest loved ones know the shameful, SHAMEFUL truth.

Gentlemen, I leave you now, to go and help my brother handle our parents. I was hoping to shirk that one off to hang out here, but it's been eating at me, so I'm going to drive over there before they start eating him.

But, inspired by the spirit of Mako, I leave you with these words. An epilogue to our intrepid Timotic.

LONG AGO IN A DISTANT LAND, I, MAKU, THE SHAPESHIFTING MASTER OF DARKNESS, UNLEASHED AND UNSPEAKABLE EVIL!

BUT A FOOLISH SERBIAN WARRIOR, WIELDING A MUNDANE SCHIAVONA, STEPPED FORTH TO OPPOSE ME.

BEFORE THE FINAL BLOW WAS STRUCK, I TORE OPEN A PORTAL IN SPACE, AND FLUNG HIM INTO SCOTLAND, WHERE MY EVIL IS LAW!

NOW THE FOOL SEEKS TO RETURN TO THE BALKANS, AND UNDO THE FUTURE THAT IS AKU!

    Schiavona Jack. I'd watch it.
