    So, /tg/... Furry games.
Every single story I've ever heard told of one seems to be about them being and/or going completely, irreversibly, horrifically wrong, full of entirely That Guys and fetish fuel content that no sane man would willingly tolerate, excluding perhaps that one game with the guy with his Monkey bro leading the human revolution.

So are they always like this? Has anyone got any good stories from them? I've seen people recommend Jade Claw on the board plenty of times before, so it can't be that bad. I think I need some more faith restoring in my fandom, I think.

The key is, don't call them "furry" games. "Furry" games will inevitably slide into the fetish cesspit because that's what the term connotes, so if you advertise it as a furry game then that's the sort that it'll attract. There is a wide and rich, even literary and cultural, corpus of anthropomorphism that ranges far beyond the dreary and insipid squalid feculence of furries. Take from that instead.
    >> Alpharius 08/23/11(Tue)14:27 No.16037621
Think of it this way. There are plenty of bad furry stories because the people we know are furries in real life have a higher chance of being the bad ones, or are more likely to make their fandom a central element of their identity. Because of this, more stories about furries will be bad ones and the negative stereotype persists. Besides, good furry stories just aren't as interesting.

"Oh, yeah, we had a player, and he may have been a furry. He was pretty cool, I guess."

That's not a story. That's a non-story. Stories about horrible furries fucking everything up are way more interesting, and are more likely to be told and remembered. Or, there are good stories about furries, but their being furries aren't critical to the stories themselves and are glossed over or ignored.

I once had a sci fi game in which it turned out one of the villains were trying to breed the ultimate warriors, mixes of human and animal DNA. Once we'd killed the scientist we had to choose what to do with them.

In character, only me and the furry player really wanted to let them free. The other three players went all "YIFF IN HELL" OOC and executed them in character.
I shrugged and frowned. The furry player ragequit.

I once played with a furry GM. We ended up helping a church of fox and wolf furries against a band of Orcs.
He had a group of foxes rape the group's healer. Then, when she and the rest of the group tried to kill them, he stated that they were so cute and loving and gentle and skilled about the rape that she couldn't help but fall in love with them and want more, claiming that they were "Doing her a favor" and "Giving her a gift".
Needless to say, we murdered them anyway. DM pulled rocks fall, party dies, and left the store.

I once had amazing game (even considered doing writefagottery) where our band (of brethren) was employed my a which covenant to retrieve valuable idol from a group of bandits.

The catch: bandits have left a day ago and idol must soon be returned to shrine, else witches loose favours of forest god. The only way in which we could catch the bandits is to transfer our minds and take control of animals in area where bandits were hiding.

GM painted picture of us flying disembodied over the forest and asked us to choose a host. I chose an owl. Rest of band chose a bear, a fox, and a buffalo.

Game was absolutely amazing. Without edge in combat we had to contrive a plan to set bandits against each other. Me and fox were stealing gold, food and planting crumbs on sleeping bandits (LoTR I know, it gets better). Bear scared horses away. One night we stole rope, fox put a noose of sleeping bandit's leg- then buffalo dragged him from camp, out into the night screaming. We led bandits to terrible fear- culminating in scaring them away from camp, leaving all valuables.

    This game was best.

It's a pretty good system which happens to involve anthropomorphic animals. Low magic fantasy, medieval, fairly good mechanically, and fairly easy to keep from the fetish shit.

One of my regular players was a furry. He kept that shit out of games, and once did a game of Ironclaw, with the caveat rule that "if I ever start sounding like one of those whiny Internet jackasses, punch me and the plot changes".

Didn't have to do that once. Had a Conanesque adventure wherein we fought the evil minions of the sorcerer who was enslaving 'people' (for lack of a better term) and releasing their instinctual, regressive behavior. Glorious fucking game, and one of the few times the guy GM'd, because of a bad experience of a player beating the shit out of him after tracking him across the Internet, figuring out he was a furry, and then deciding that a helpful animal guide was 'pure furfaggotry'.

Seriously, that story still makes me rage, and requires a bit of background. Anyone wanna hear it?

They're mentioning some of the good ones. Palladium doesn't do bad anthro(furry) gaming either, between TMNT and Rifts.

There's two kinds of furry. There's the fuck-perv furries, and then there's people who think anthromorphic animal-people are cool. We LARPer types have a good chunk of the latter, since we'd generally slap the shit out of someone fursuiting, but a good character is a good character, whether they're playing a human or an anthromorphic cat-race. Pic related to what we think of the fuckfest furry types.

First off, little background on the two guys involved.

Our furry player was your standard quiet, nerdy guy. Skinny, usually wearing something terribly unfashionable, and kinda awkward. Great guy, though, and always had my back; I still remember him hauling my drunk ass away from the campus police, breaking into a locked closet to hide me, and then throwing them off the trail. Total bro, and great roleplayer.

Our second player was your usual "alpha male" type gamer; you know the type. Always needs to prove that they're the best thanks to being a bit nerdy in high school, and thus overcompensating by being an aggressive ass to anyone he saw as 'less' than himself. All right player, usually was the GM, and an okay person, barring the flaws.

So, for clear reasons, Asshole really, really had trouble gaming with our furry gamer. He represented everything that this guy was trying to convince himself he wasn't; the pale, nerdy, awkward guy who loved gaming. Honestly, the only difference between them was that one of 'em was an asshole and one was a furry, and let me tell you, I much preferred the furry.

So, our furry player quietly mentions he's going to be running a game. Asshole, always looking for a reason to try and drive this guy away from gaming with him, starts making mocking comments, and finally declares that he'd already planned to run a game session that night. Seeing through this obvious bullshit, somebody tells him to knock it off, and we get the details.

System is going to be a homebrew the guy was working on; heroic fantasy, each player has a few 'freeform abilities', and all rolls are opposed. Backstory is important, so he asks us to work on it, and people prep to meet the next week.

Now, at this point, I know that Furry is, well, a furry, because he'd gotten hammered with me one night, and he felt it would be cool mentioning it to me. I honestly didn't give a shit; after you've spent a night piss-drunk with a man, playing darts and trying to pick fights in fake accents, then you don't give a shit what gets 'em going or how the play on the 'net. Besides, he was a chill guy.

So, about halfway through the week, Asshole stops by my place to 'ask a few questions on the game'. He comes, sits down, and pulls out a fucking LIST of websites and connections between this guy and some furry stuff. He then airs his concern that we're "playing with a goddamn furfaggot" and how we need to tell him to cut it the fuck out.

I point out that he's being paranoid, there's never been anything to indicate this, and I'm damn well not going to drive off a good gaming pal because of that. I figure this guy is just looking for an excuse to get Furry out of the group, and so I tell him to drop it and just not show. He goes off, annoyed I'm not taking his side, but otherwise somewhat reasonable.

So, game night. Things are going fairly well; the setting is really goddamn interesting. World's covered in a giant forest, villages are fairly secretive and insular, and iron is incredibly fucking rare. There's a great sequence where we track down a weird tree monster and subdue it, and then, things get ugly.

Furry, now really feeling his stride at being a GM again, describes how a little bird flits down and begins mentioning how this tree-beast is the symptom of a larger disease of the forest.

Asshole immediately gets confrontational. He'd been bored, as his idea of a good freeform character was a man specialized in hitting things, and he completely ignored the setting info FurryGM gave us beforehand, so he was clearly trying to stir up shit.

Now, spirit bird talking as the voice of the forest? Perfectly good in mythology. Asshole doesn't think so, though.

    He starts groaning about 'played out shit', and the GM asks him to be quiet. He gets confrontational;
    >Yeah, I bet you want to talk through a fucking bird.
    >...wha? Dude, what are you talking about? We're playing a game here.
    >It's clear, man; you're a furry. Keep that furfaggotry out of games. I can always see you pulling that shit, and I'm fucking tired of it.

Bear in mind, up until this point, the most 'furry' character this guy had played was a urban barbarian. A human urban barbarian, who happened to train horses and get in bar fights. So, this is just pure bullshit.

Me and the other two players are paralyzed. This guy is now beginning to get rolling, and starts walking up to FurryGM, starts spouting screennames, websites, and other information that would have taken a long while to track down. Saying how this guy was 'a clear furfaggot' and how he should 'go game with his furry pals and stop creeping normal people out'.

Finally, he starts telling us how we shouldn't put up with it. FurryGM puts up a half-hearted defense, saying how he's never allowed this shit to cross into his normal life, and Asshole simple shoots back that "it's obvious, I could just fucking know".

Finally, asshole takes a swing at FurryGM. The guy takes the hit, and realizing that he'll need to defend himself, tries punching Asshole. Seeing as he is a skinny nerd, this does no real damage, and Asshole sees it as justification to begin kicking Furry's ass.

See, I've never had to deal with this, but because of the horror stories, I always bring a nice, heavy pipe wrench in my bag whenever I'm gaming with a new group. Or player. Or... well, I just bring it.

That said, one of our usual players? Furry. Has been for decades. No one gives a flying fuck, because he knows what acceptable table manners are, and he's damn funny.

Finally, the group snaps out of the fucking fugue caused by an asshole suddenly assaulting a group member, and hauls them apart. Furry is bleeding and has a black eye, and Asshole is wondering why we aren't helping him when "the other guy started it!"

I tell Asshole to fuck off before I call the goddamn cops, and get the guy some medical attention. FurryGM, who has a guilt complex or some shit, refuses to press charges because he doesn't want to make life difficult for someone else, and drops from gaming for about three months due to that.

I finally rouse him from this depression by getting him blind stinking drunk, running a game of Paranoia, and convincing him that yes, gaming is something he enjoys and is good at. We celebrated by going to Asshole's apartment, puking on his couch, and legging it into the distance while he yelled at us.

Honestly, this is why I don't like the "hurr durr all furries are faggots die' attitude people get. There are good ones out there; it's just rare, they're quiet as fuck, and you'll only find out about them when they hit bro-tier and are willing to reveal the darkest shame of gaming.

No idea what Asshole is doing these days, but Furry is slowly breaking into the industry. He's got playtesting credits on several RPGs, and is working on getting his writing out there.

My group ran a DnD campaign in a homebrew setting awhile back, where one of my roommates made a catgirl rogue/assassin character. We gave her a lot of grief about it at first because she had to compromise with the DM on allowing anthro characters (since he originally didn't have any races like that in the setting), but once we got the backstory hammered out, she roleplayed it fine. Nothing sexual or insisting on being a "special snowflake" to hog the story's spotlight like most horror stories you hear involve.

Her character ended up pulling a downright badass "taking you with me" moment in the final session of the campaign too.

While furries are reviled across the internet, I figure in gaming circles they're pretty innocuous. Sex aside, we've all seen enough whiny, entitled shitheads who are obsessed with and live vicariously through elves/vampires/dragons/etc that somebody doing it through their fox fursona is honestly pretty mundane. It's the personality, not the fetish, that's the problem. And we've dealt with that shit forever.

I'm with you on that; I've had two furries in my group over the last ten years. One was a little psychotic and got kicked the fuck out. The other was and still is perfectly chill and does nothing about his private life shit. He's been in the group for 3 years now and there's never been an issue at all. Hell, only reason I even know was when I went over to his apartment a few times and met his roommate, who crafted fursuits for a damn living. She was pretty cool, I'll admit. And hey, if she can convince someone to pay her 600-900 dollars for something she built with 70 dollars worth of materials from a craft store, more power to her I say.

Its like anything with a sexual connotation; don't do it places where people who aren't interested congregate.

    furry = fetish fuel
games with anthropomorphic animals = for sane people.

Are there scantly clad fox ladies on the cover of the rulebook? Chances are it's a fucking wankfest.
Are there four humanoid fighting turtles with differently colored head-bands on the cover? Chances are you won't have to hide this under your mattress.

For a more freeform based RPG (the DM had rules and let us build, but did all the roles behind the scenes) for a forum game, I had a lot of fun playing a large lizard-man called Sarak. In a science fiction/magic/psionic game, he went around, loincloth and a fuckall huge sci-fi war hammer. He was very fun to have around, and though a lot of my characters are high-brow, very smart characters, being a very dumb, but 'smashy smashy' type, especially in a sci-fi game, is exceedingly enjoyable.

You know, I aughta bring Mr. Sarak back to a game sometime. Big, dumb, innocent, but loves to be rambunctious and smashy, is there any better character?

    *nods* Yiffy vs. anthro, basically.

Fuck, I've met more creepy "vampires" at LARPs than people playing anthros. There's just something about the whole blood/seduction/sex thing that drags the real pervs in by the bucketload.

It's part of the reason I don't play Mind's Eye Theatre stuff nowadays. Too many people I got to know post-game that were lower on the Humanity score than their characters. Or not far off, if the PC was on the bottom end of the scale.

By comparison, most of the folks I know LARPing as scavengers, wolfen, catfolk, etc. are normal bros by comparison. One of them is a makeup artist who just likes playing characters that let her do a lot of her work on herself and other people.

I was running a weird west campaign a long while ago with a coyote-man race... they were one of the three 'native' races to the land, the others being elves and dwarves, and they were the ones that had warmed up to the newcomers the most (wait, you have weapons that can kill a buffalo in one shot...? SOLD!).

One of my favorite memories was a player running a coyote snake oil salesman. Smarmy, nasty, high charisma, packed a .50 caliber derringer.

They had been rounded up by the Marshall, who was crooked to the core - not our BBEG, but close - and he was getting ready to kill the others... and the coyote asks if he'll kill the elf first. The Marshall stares, and asks him why.

"A guy deserves a last meal, doesn't he? And come on, look at the muscles on that guy. He's lean, but probably not stringy. Nice and tender... should have some good marbling, too."

That managed to shake the Marshall to the point where he didn't notice the coyote picking the lock on his handcuffs...

They managed to get out of there, "kill" the Marshall (he was undead, but they wouldn't realize that until later) and get back to town. The elf starts praising the coyote over drinks, telling him that he owes him his life for the trickery.

The coyote informs him that he was dead serious. "Not that I'd want to kill you otherwise... but if you're gonna die..."

Yeah I know what you mean about vampire larps.

You know it doesn't matter what fetish someone has, or even if they lack a fetish, bringing inappropriate shit to the roleplaying table simply makes them That Guy.
And That Guy crosses all barriers of skin color, age, or sexual preferences.
Although I'm guessing they are not getting so much sex and being very upset and repressed about it.

    Not a furry.
Not even interested in anthro animals.
But I really like playing lizardmen.

When I was younger our group had a permanent GM that was a gay guy that was into anthro stuff, he could be irritating at times but for other reasons common to roleplayers.
In fact, the werewolf campaign we ran was so fun that our group slept over at the RP and Board games club on numerous occasions because we stayed up so late gaming.
And I can't recall a single time that anything "yiff" was involved, it was pretty much us ripping apart fomori, going on spirit quests and fighting the technocracy.

Best thing was that he never pulled his punches when we did something risky. Hell I even lost one character just from jumping into the spirit world without proper preparation.

It still tries to dehumanize them by exaggerating their hobby into a supposed "lifestyle" and "borderline cult" and parroting stereotypes like "they're FREAKS who always FORCE their HORRID GARBAGE where it doesn't belong" (read: they try to connect their interests together, like everybody else). The suggestion that any reasonable person would be "deeply embarrassed" by them (like the extrimist haters are said to think) wasn't missed either.

Sure, you chould cherry-pick out a few people who fit half the stereotype, but having it constantly brought up whenever a "good one" comes up, as if to remind people that THE BAD ONES ARE OUT THERE and that anything that dispels the stereotype is an exception, is very unkind to the ever-popular "I only mean the bad ones, let me monger my hate" excuse.

If someone acts like a faggot, kick them out for acting like a faggot. Simple as that.

Good experiences? Well, mainly mouseguard. Amazing stuff. The mousy perspective really makes things somehow feel extremely epic. Also, the setting is really unique in many aspects - no magic, low tech, non-religious, non-materialistic (you fight for the good of the mouse race, not for money or loot). I can't name any settings that have all these aspects.

Thinking of the stereotype as "like the good ones who know their place, but MORE" is still reinforcing it. Black people who commit crimes aren't "more black" than the normal ones who are "reasonable" enough to feel ashamed of their race because of them. They're people who fit into category X and category Y, not people who are more or less X.

It shows what the anti-furfag sees when he rages and why everything anthropomorphic is ruined for him, though we know it's not the furfag's fault.

Ok, let's get one thing straight here. ANY GAME CAN BE A FURRY GAME.

DnD, Mutants and Masterminds, Savage Worlds, Shadowrun, blah blah blah. The mechanics inherent to the game are meant to simulate a style of gameplay, not a genre of characters.

There have been several half-beast characters, mostly NPCs, in a years- long DnD campaign I'm still playing, but there never was any issue with them... They were sentient creatures, same as any other. One was a funny character, the closest thing to comic relief we had, a foxman... he ended up ruling a kingdom somehow. Now we have a foxgirl NPC, a forest warrior with a heart of gold, who we don't see very often.
Also had at some point a foe who was a Kajit, who liked to eat humanoid flesh and tried to set herself up back as Empress and conquer half the world or something. (We stopped that one.) It was because it's a classical trait of fantasy villains, not for vore or anything. And it worked! Our characters were happy and proud to have stopped that horrible cat/woman. What possible issue with this?

Or, what is the problem with a player who wants to play the archetypal Minotaur Warrior? It's not like ours is wanting to play one to do porn with it, all he wants is martial adventures.

tl;dr. As long as it's not for fetish reasons, there is no issue with the presence of furry characters. The beast/human hybrids are fantasy classics, so as long as there is no issue with them, just leave them be.

I see no issues so long as it doesn't get sexual.
really, ANY player getting sexual AT ALL in an RPG is freaky shit.
Really, we have an entire race devoted to people who are half animals. They're elven druids who got stuck halfway in wildform, and essentially created a new species.
one of my best players played a four armed anubis beastkin.
he became one of if not the strongest character to date. and NOTHING freaky ever happened, mentioned or occurred.

So I'm playing a Longtooth Shifter Avenger in a 4th edition game.

I'm not a furry, mind you, but it is an anthropomorphic character. Well sorta kinda not really. See instead of being the bog standard Longtooth Shifter of being a wolfman, I decided he would be a Snakeman because the DM liked the idea of Longtooth/Razorclaw shifters being just general categories that involve several different types of shifters, anyway. He was a snake. Anyway, it doesn't much matter because until you shift you look human only with mild features of that animal. So a wolf shifter, for example would have sideburns or a bitchin' beard or something and might have big canines or something I don't know.

    Man. I suck at this.

The character was recruited to a group of adventurers, when he stumbled across them fighting a group of black-marsh lizard-men. The picture here, where I commissioned an artist to draw, was Mr. Otter leaping into the scene, his flint knife in hand, to attack the racial enemies from behind.

Was a good fight! Game didn't last long, but I had fun. That's what a game is meant for.

It was a freebie from a drawfag. I'm not gonna complain, because you get what you pay for. But yeah, pic kinda bothers me.

    Here, have a hyena.

I have learned to love the safe-search function on e621. All you have to do is ignore and filter through the shitty art, the creepy technically worksafe fetish pics, the simply mistagged porn, and droves of MLP pics.

I forget the exact numbers but I pulled a good few hundred pics from that pit. This is out of about 30000 "safe" pics, though. I had too much time on my hands this summer.

Also, you might want to tone down your posts, sir.

On the subject of furries in RPGs, I have to mention Mutant, or, rather the reboot, Mutant: Undergångens arvtagere ("Mutant: Heirs of the End").

It's a Swedish system and setting, and takes place in southern scandinavia (other places availible at additional cost, naturally) after an unknown catastrophe (it is implied to have been nuclear war and/or Mars exploding and raining fiery death on the entire planet) essentially killed civilization. The parts of mankind that didn't escape into space survived largely intact in high-tech bunkers.

When they came out, they found the world populated entirely by strange creatures, including primitive but sentient mutants, both of the four-legged/photosynthetic/psychic human variety, and anthropomorphic versions of animals native to the area (who may or may not be four-legged and photosynthetic).

Somewhere along the way, the humans forgot how to produce the wondrous technology that they used to have, and the ancient bunkers are all abandoned and thoroughly looted, or deep within the radiation-and-abomination-filled Forbidden Zones. Retrieving things from the depths of these Zones is a risky but high-paying business, and a natural source of adventure for players.

In the principal setting, humans have built an empire largely thanks to the re-invention of reliable gunpowder. Technology has advanced to be roughly industrial age, boasting large factories crewed mostly by mutants and other second-class citizens. If you're not working yourself to death on the factory floor, odds are you're out in the wilderness, fighting radioactivity and horrible mutated beasts for your meager livelihood.

Artifacts of the old days are highly prized; functioning energy weapons are the holy grail of adventurers everywhere, but anything that is still operational is worth a small fortune. Even little trinkets like trading cards and canned food have worth to collectors and decadent aristocrats.

I ran a game of Shard once. With a player that was -very- 'FUCK THIS FURFAG SHIT'.

By the end of the game, he was begging me to draw his badass tiger airship captain.

    Feels good man.

As an aside, not all furries even have a kink for that kind of stuff. I just think animal people look cool. Fuck that yiff shit. :|

The cities, villages and roads of the empire tend to be safe, but anything beyond that tends to be full of radiation, ravenous mutant wildlife, hostile mutant tribes, mostly functional (and incredibly hostile) war bots and other hazards. Due to the hostile environment, primitive technology and isolationist-elitist tendencies, anything beyond the borders of the empire is viewed with extreme suspicion. Being accused of spying is tantamount to a death sentence, particularly since the justice system is draconic, corrupted and deeply biased towards the rich and human. Anything that could even begin to threaten the security of the nation (or the sovereignty of the emperor) is dealt with harshly and without regard for evidence.

TL;DR: It's a grimdark, industrial-age post-apocalyptic scavanger world version of Scandinavia full of fire-breathing furries.

    It's pretty neat.
