For me, it's gotta Promethean: the Created.

This game is really only good in one scenario: one player, one ST. A long campaign individually tailored to the player. Deep, intense, tough, and soul-searching, but in the end this is the closest RPGs get to art.

    /my best campaign ever

An obscure indie title or generally unpopular alternative to a more widely accepted game of the same kind.

And then somebody shows up and starts shit talking, the original poster of the obscure title gets put in a defensive position and starts arguing its merits. The shit-talker then feels as though his more mainstream version of the game is being insulted and starts attacking even harder.

And then, then the muscle women images start showing up.

As much as /tg/ likes to take jibes of the crunchiness, it's really fun to play and unless you failed 5th grade math you should have no problems with making a character.

We've been playing this for a couple of months now, hands down my favorite RPG I've played. Sure, it's really rules heavy and there's mechanics for every minuta, but with a good story things are REALLY fleshed out with the rules. Gunfights are intense as fuck.

Reign is a damn good game that doesn't get talked about enough... I remember it was big for a couple days while I was brainstorming a brief campaign in which all of the players would play royalty in charge of bee-themed hive-nations, but since then it's only been mentioned occasionally.

As for Unknown Armies, UA rumor threads were HUGE for the first couple months of /tg/'s existence... and then the newfags showed up and thought the point was "HERP DERP, NORMAL THING IS REALLY ABNORMAL LOLRANDUM" and drove the threads into the ground.

I don't really like Burning Wheel as much, but I don't regret purchasing it.

Mainly because of the really weird way that you level up abilities, especially to different shades.

I like the character building, though, and the fluff. Reading through it was educational on what to do with a system in terms of personalizing your characters.

But the dumbest thing in that game is having to pay 3 points to play a character with one arm.

    Abso-fucking-lutely this.

The system may have quirks (of various sizes, depending on how anal you are about system quirks, anyway) but the setting is incredible and the way the system and setting mesh? BEYOND perfect.

You'd be completely in character saying something like, "My wizard is 6th Circle but I've tied a 3rd Rank thread from my Spellcasting Talent to our Group Pattern so I'm more effective than average."

Usually, in a D&D (or similar) game, if you dared utter something like, "I am 4th level and I have 4 Ranks in Spellcraft...", your DM will have a shit-fit.

And hell, not only is it basically a meta-setting/system based on 80's fantasy cliches, a lot of the mechanics are really great. I really dig that you can weave experience into your magical items to improve its power, i think it's a great way alternative to having magic items of scaling power all over the place.

I picked up a bunch at Chicago comic con for a dollar a box and got some awesome figures, but I also got quadruples of the same shitty clix over and over. Hell, a friend of mine got a box that had two of the same exact figure in it.

At the same Comic con I bought those 1$ boxes, there were a couple guys who bought an entire shipment case and sat on the ground opening every box. 48 individual boxes for 20$ was a phenomenal deal for them, but they didn't get any of the rare or unique figures they wanted, just lots of duplicates and low rank (worthless) versions that they didn't need.

Mean while, I got rare versions of both of the characters they wanted from one box. They were kind of pissed when I told them that.

3rd edition is interesting. I had played Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader before, and I picked up the 3rd edition WFRP core box at a pretty massive discount because I liked and was familiar with Fantasy Flight. I've read through it a few times, and I still have no real idea of how I feel about it. It's like a cross between a board game and a traditional pen-and-paper RPG, and the reviews I've read about it after the fact either hail it as the second coming of Jesus or the antichrist, depending. I just have no real idea of how it plays in real time. The tokens and cards might be a chore, but they might also speed the game up considerably.

Has anyone here played WFRP 3rd edition? How does it run?

its okay, not amazing but it works. Once you get into it though you lose the charm of story and it quickly becomes a numbers game. You're just adding up symbols and playing your cards. Its certainly playable and makes for great one off scenarios but overall I prefer 2nd ed.

That would be because Dark Heresy was based on WFRP, at least before third edition.

I've really got no idea why FFG did that. There were more than enough supplements for 2nd Edition still to be written, the system worked well enough that they kept it going for Dark Heresy. The only reason I can think of is that they wanted to establish their own control over it by radically changing it.

Most fighting happens in the huge desert area around the equator, which has two impacts.

Limited clouds means not much cloud-cover, and the invention of laser weaponry means the moment you CAN see/detect something, you can hit it. In addition, because the planet itself is much larger, there isn't the concern about planes that can fire around the curvature of the earth avoiding being seen. Planes are great when they can avoid return fire. Hard to dodge return fire that moves at the speed of light and has computers pinpointing the exact location and time to fire.

Secondly the unstable weather in the area means a hugeass sandstorm could appear at a moment's notice, making air travel or combat fairly unreliable.

The Monster Island games, the rules are fairly simple, you can make a monster in minutes, each of the three books (the other two being escape from MI & Invasion of MI) comes with more to add to the game, with battles in cities against the military, against the attacking aliens, in a 3 way battle or even wargames with monsters.

There's extra monster ideas from the website (they give you a lot of pre-made ones, like Godzilla re-named, Mothra re-named and even Dr Manhattan!) and there's enough powers to make just about anything, I could run an Evangelion game with it in theory...

Was tempted to make a board-game spin on it with changing weather, events (power crystals, changes to game mechanics, excuse to create a monster from an area) and happenings from staying in certain areas.
