213 KB Manfred Goes to Dinner Burrowowl 09/16/11(Fri)01:05 No.16311859
Good evening, fech/tg/uys, it's Riddle of Steel o'clock and time for the return of our good friend Manfred Havrisham, squire to Sir Perceval Havrisham and recently come fully to manhood both the bed of a trollop and through the heat of battle.

When last we left our intrepid teenager, he was sitting on a brothel floor, bleeding out from a groin injury inflicted by the pimp that now lies dead at his feet.

Upon further review of several pertinent rules, it turns out his 8 bloodloss had been reduced to 2 by a two-success First Aid check (each success reduces blood loss by 3), so I've ruled that he was leaking slowly enough that a more competant medical professional (the village barber) was able to get on the scene in time.

Cut to two weeks later. Manfred has been confined to bedrest and daily leechings, and is finally in a state where walking does not inflict horrible pain, though he is not quite so light on his feet any more. A serving girl enters Manfred's bedchamber, throws back the curtains to let in the morning light, and demurely informs him that he is expected in the dining hall this evening. "Lord Harold is entertaining foreign digni... Foreign dignitaries and requires the presence of his sons and grandsons," she informs you, stumbling over what she clearly treats as a prepared speech. "'We mustn't fuck up the lord's dog and pony show for lack of ponies,' says Marianne. Oh! I wasn't to say that!" She blushes with frustration and embarassment, and makes to leave.

    A few quick ground rules:

1> you guys are running Manfred. First person posting as Manfred in direct response to a call to action by me gets dibs on dictating his actions
1a> if you aren't replying to my call to action directly, I may not recognize your intent and ignore you
2> You guys roll for everything but hit locations (I'll do that)
2a> if I don't call for a die roll, I probably won't honor your roll
2b> first person to roll the dice called for gets it. Please be clear who you're rolling for.
2c> please don't hide your dice.

ince the last thread, Manfred's health has been slow to recover. His HT temporarily stands at 2 (give him two more weeks and he'll be back in form; there was no permanent damage). He is also awarded 2 SA for Drive - Get Laid and 1 SA for Destiny - Lead House Havrisham, bringing him to a total of:

    Drive - Get Laid: 6
Destiny - Lead House Havrisham: 2
Oath - Service to Sir Perceval: 2

You may spend SA on character advancement or hoard them. Discuss if you'd like, I'll ask for a verdict in a little while.

Okay, it's been an hour and only one person weighing in on character progression. Last call: spend some SA on improving young Manfred's baseline stats (or maybe even bump up his proficiency, I think he's got enough) or save them for ad-hoc dice use?

Very well. How much will you spend where?

It would cost 4 to raise an attribute that currently stands at 3, 7 to raise an attribute that currently stands at 4.

Manfreds Sword & Shield proficiency stands at 6, so it would cost 6 to bump it up one.

The only skill he used enough to merit an improvement was Persuasion. You can improve it from 9 to 8 by spending 6 SA, as I read the rules.

Manfred forces back a grimace several times as he dresses himself, but finally he clasps the silvered buckle of his swordbelt and reviews himself in the mirror. Though still a stick of a boy in truth, his chest is now swelled with the pride that can only be born of hard-tested self-confidence. We'll see if grandpa's guests know of his exploits, he thinks. Out the door and down the hall he struts.

He is met almost immediately by Marianne. She is the shrivelled-up battleaxe of a woman that has run the household since Harold was Manfred's age. He pauses and lets her inspect him immediately and without complaint. She gives him a quick nod of approval and curtly informs him "Lord Havrisham's guests are Lord Digieni Digenes, his son Andronichus, his daughter Laskara -- unmarried, so mind yourself --, and his retainers, Sir Jani Alianti, and the brothers Symeon and Simon Chionates." She doesn't pause to make sure he caught all that, confident that he hadn't. "Lord Digenes and his children will be seated with Lord Havrisham and Sir Perceval along with Sir Jani. You will be seated with the Chionates boys. Mind your tonuge and do Sir Perceval proud. Off with you. The party should be arriving any moment."

House Havrisham's visitors have foreign names, Manfred notes. Sir Perceval is waiting in the yard, ready to order the gates raised, receive the guests formally, and send for Lord Havrisham as soon as they cross the threshhold.

Three carriages approach the gate, attended by three outriders with light lances, one with a pennant affixed, presumably for House Digenes. The lead outrider tips his hat gallantly. "Pray open your gates and give comfort to weary travellers, landlord!" the rider barks in an odd accent. Sir Perceval calls out for the gatekeeper, and the iron bars slowly creep upward. The riders dismount and talk among themselves in a tongue unfamiliar to young Manfred. They seem to be sharing a joke of some sort.

Finally the gate draws high enough to allow the carriages through, and Sir Perceval greets them in their own strange language. The young man bearing the pennant breaks out laughing and says something unintelligible. Another of the riders sends him a withering glare, then replies "You are both as generous and well-educated as your reputation assays, good knight! Please forgive my companion. He does not know your..." he says something in his own language again. "Accent," Perceval offers. "It is just so, yes."

see? 3 Soc isn't completely unworkable.

Manfred greets the outriders formally, calling upon a stableboy to bring wine and cheese to quench their thirst and sate their hunger. He stumbles through the old phrases Marriane taught him as a boy (for he is a man now, he reminds himself).

Just as the Havrisham servants set up a table with cheeses, bread, and wine, the carriages come to rest inside the yard.

The rearmost carriage's door open first, and a cluster of serving-folk swarm out to attend their betters. The lead carriage is opened, revealing two dark-haired beauties, one somewhat older and lovelier than the other, both dressed in gowns of an unfamiliar cut and strange material. The younger girl descends gracefully, immediately turns, and offers her hand to help the older girl down. Strike that. She offers her hand to help the young woman down. As she descends Manfred is not entirely sure her feet touch the floor of her carriage, the step her serving-boy had set down, or the ground below. For a moment, both Manfred and Sir Perceval are struck dumb.

"Sir Perceval, this is my sister Laskara. Please forgive her presence while we do men's business. She has traveled little and insisted on accompanying our father."

Sir Perceval turns to Manfred. His face is red, his easy manner shaken. "I shall go see what is detaining my lord father," he announced. "Young Manfred, please attend our guests in my absence. I shall return presently."

Perceval turns on his heel and walks briskly back to the manor keep. What do?

Manfred takes the young woman by the hand and turn to lead her back to the manor keep.

She wraps her arm gently around his arm, but does not yet make to move. "First we must wait for our lord father," she admonishes the dark-haired rider with surprising fluency.

The middle carriage's door finally opens, revealing two middle-aged men in fine clothing. They each appear somewhat drained, no doubt the result of their long journey. Simultaneously, as though choreographed, Sir Perceval and Lord Harold emerge from the manor keep, attended by Marianne and the young servant girl. There is a flurry of activity as introductions are made, greeting are exchanged, and Digenes servants and Havrisham servants whirl about trying not to interfere with each other too much.

Perception at 8 (Intrigue) to avoid having to rely on Manfred's heraldry later on to figure out who's who. Fail this an I'm willing to assume he mixed up something as simple as who is Laskara's brother or which of the older men is the Lord and which is the knight.

right, then. It's a bit of a blur, but Manfred's pretty sure that

the older man with the mustache is Sir Jani, who has an interest in importing hardwoods

the older man with the beard is Digieni Digenes, who grandpa is treating like a proper equal, not just a respectable guest.

The dark-haired beauty is Laskara Digenes. The younger woman is her handmaiden Rala.

The two redheaded young men are the brothers Symeon and Simon. Neither seems to take much of anything very seriously, and they went through an unseemly amount of wine when given half a chance.

The dark-haired young man is Andronichus Digenes. He immediately intercepted Sir Perceval to prevent him from fawning over his little sister.

One of the servant boys (about Manfred's age) appears to be a favorite of Digieni's.

He realizes he is standing in the doorway of one of the guest suites with Laskara and Rala. Their luggage is arranged for their use, and Rala throws a somewhat impatient look in his direction. Laskara is surveying the room, her handmaiden is doing something with a basin of water.

Manfred takes his leave and heads off in search of Symeon and Simon. They are not difficult to find. There is a sound of raucus laughter and teasing shouts in the foreign tongue out behind the stables. A small cluster of House Havrisham servants look on as the two redheads take turns whacking away at one of their servant boys. All three are now wearing quilted jacks and wielding wooden practice swords.

The servant boy look up as Manfred approaches, and makes to greet him. Rap! one of the strikes the boy on the hand, jarring his sword loose.

The servant boy takes off his padded mitten and jack, and offers it to you. From the welts on his arms and chest, it appears the brothers haven't been gentle with him.

I think I mentioned in the last thread that Manfred is from a lesser branch of House Havrisham. His destiny isn't to take his grandfather's inheritance but rather his grandfather's older brother's. The bigger purse.

A note about the practice swords: I never saw rules for fighting without the intent to dickmurder a fool. Practice swords have an inherently higher ATN (by 1) than their equivalent weapon, do bludgeoning damage at ST-1 (or 1 less than listed damage if already ST-1 or worse). I'll also allow anybody not currently bent on murder to pull up to his ST off the total successes to avoid annihilating your opponent. Not that this would be a problem when you're scrawny Manfred the Manly.

    Practice Arming Sword:
    Weapon Length 1H, M
    ATN (Cut) 7
    ATN (Thrust) 8
    DTN 6
    Damage (Cut) ST-1
    Damage (Thrust) ST-2

The armor in question here is a padded jack, covering the torso and arms, and padded mittens. All of the above provide an impressive 1AV

The foreigner snorts in disgust. He drops his sword, throws in hands in the air, and lets loose what could only by a stream of indignant obscenities, probably cursing his practice sword's mother.

It'd probably be considered rather unsporting to bash his head in at this point. I say we thrust the sword into the ground point first and take a bow and ask Simon's brother to thank him for an excellent fight. We'll embarrass him more by being gracious and light about us kicking his ass.

Symeon picks up Simon's sword and begins putting things away where he found them. "We have worked up quite the appetite, yes? I look forward to the slop your people call food. Is most filling, yes?"

Gizka was a really badass swashbuckling assassin who got firing-squadded, and actually almost lived, but got shot in the stomach and ended up with bloodloss 20 or something crazy like that.

Bueno Grande is a bear. A bear with a poleaxe. He died in an unfortunate batting machine accident. (no wait)

Sulla was a time traveling Roman who gut cut in half by a Dane with an axe, and ended up selling his soul in Elysium to protect his descendants or something. That part is rather unclear.

Gizka, Gitzkha, or whatever her name was, was a middle-eastern slave turned fugitive turned vigilante.
She had wacky adventures in Rome, wacking cardinals for the Borgias, met Sulla's descendant, a soft working girl, and used her as an improvised floatation device.
Died of sudden lead poisoning at the Borgia's hands.

So far, the two characters we've seen the most of are Gizka (a waifish female assassin who stabbed half of Rome in the face before going down in a hail of gunfire) and Sulla (the universe's most badass Roman legionnaire, who dickstabbed many, many enemies before getting his head split by a fucking axe-wielding viking)

someone said something about how you should be able to break a shield with a strong enough blow.
it was answered along the lines of... yes, but to actually hurt someone throught a shield and armor you need a str 16 hit. you know what hits for 16? a fucking bear. with a pollaxe.
sadly, Bueno never got the chance to fight against a shield bearer.

On a more sensitive note, apparently a Norse Huscarl can deliver such a blow as well.

    >>16315084
That Huscarl was also a paragon of all that is Huscarl-y. If you looked up Huscarl in the dictionary, it would show only his left leg, because he has more Huscarl-ness in that one extremity than your average one does in his whole body.

It's complicated. Gizka's adventures ended with her getting shot and falling into a river instead of being paid for an assassination. She had Sulla's descendant locked up in a hotel room, and we never really got a resolution on what happened, except that later, during Sulla's adventure, we flashed to the girl having some sort of karmic link with him.

Then when he died, it was revealed that the whore is his only remaining descendant, and that he was being given the chance to save her somehow, in return for his sweet afterlife in elysium.

I personally interpret this to mean that Galt is going to run another one from the whore's perspective, in which we'll use cunning and our uncanny ability to survive huge falls to escape from the Borgia and save Gizka from bleeding out in the Tiber, so that they can then go on to destroy the Borgia.

"If you can kill one Cardinal, you can kill another."

Not much difference really. It was only in the 17-1800s that medicine started to be a specialization more than just an outgrowth of general University study, which would have included philosophy and theology, along with all number of arcane studies.

    Good morning!

For the barber in Manfred's story I used the Merchant and Academic skill packages and used First Aid, Surgery, Herbalist, and Folk Lore as the four knowledge/lore skills.

I'm against granting that -1 to Surgery on account of how dicey surgery is before the development of notions like sanitation.
    >> Burrowowl 09/16/11(Fri)13:02 No.16316693
    >>16315516
To use a skill (e.g. when Manfred had to check etiquette), you roll a number of d10s equal to a relevant stat (in this case Social). Any dice that equal or exceed the skill number on the character sheet count as successes. Manfred's Social is 3 and his Etiquette (Court) is 6, so he rolls 3d10 with sixes and above counting in his favor.

During character creation you get most of your skills through "packages," predefined lists ranging from a handful (Laborer only has 5) to a dozen or so (Courtier has 12 skills). How good the numbers are in your skill packages depends on how much of a priority you made their skills (as compared to their attributes or proficiencies or social status or merits & flaws...). TRoS is a classless system, so when I go to brew up a manservant or knight or merchant or juggler one of the first things I think of is what their skill packages are.

Most of the named characters in Manfred's story are Courtiers with very similar attributes, and have a variety of second skill packages (Harold is Courtier/Clergyman, Manfred is Courtier/Knight, Symeon is Courtier/Swordsman, whereas Charlene is Beggar/Prostitute)
