/tg/, what would happen if, right now, a squad of space marines was dropped into Afghanistan or Iraq right now (or when the war was a bit hotter)?
It doesn't matter how they got there, through teleportation mishap, a fuck up in the gellar field, and so on.

Or, if you guys don't want to talk about current wars, how about if some marines were dropped into WWII? Omaha Beach, or the taking of Italy, or the Siege of Stalingrad, it doesn't matter.

pic related, depending on your views.

world super powers, China, U.S, etc would get wind of a supiror armed force in their active war zone. their would be a race to acwire the new tech. most likely U.S would get it unless some one got wind of it first. depending on what the marines were armed with it would greatly alter world politics

Yeah, they may take a bunch down with them, but if they didn't come off of that whole "For the Emprah" thing and join up with someone, they'd be hunted and killed. Add into this that they don't have infinite ammo, and it's just a matter of time. Couldn't be any worse than the meat grinder that the trench warfare of the first WW was.

Problem: Afghanistan is largely expanses of desert. Assuming the Marines had the fortune to land in the middle of a battle, or somewhere with a reasonable population, they'd blow up any opposition. But then what? They'd probably end up running through the desert like idiots, since I can't see them fitting in any available vehicles. If the US decided to get rid of them, it would just airstrike them. If not, they'd probably randomly show up every week or so, shooting holes in things, and then disappear again.

    A) Kill all humans as they're all heretics for not worshiping the Emprah

Except you know, exposed to the cold hard truth of reality, they'd probably all die of shock in moments as their body rejects the organs they have packed in. A IRL space marine would have to be sucking down immunosuppresent like it was goddamn water.

And even if that didn't happen, its goddamn canon that their bolters shoot depleted water warheads. And their top line battle tank has armor equaling 300mm of conventional steel. We have tanks with far, far more then that.

    Killed? I think not

The Astartes would seek out and capture a NATO or US personal and interrogate him. Once they learn of their situation and realize that they are either back in time or outside the reach of immediate assistance they would set out attempting to convert eh planet.

A meeting with the heads of nations would be assembled. Everyone would jump at the chance to meet an alien. All the while the world is going fucking batshit over their arrival. Once they state their intentions and offer the Earth the chance to join the Imperium it is going to be rejected pretty much outright.

Slowly however, the people will want to join. The promise of a real living God would get many of the religious nuts warping their own beliefs to fit this new reality. Plus the offering of protection and tech advances once the rescue fleet arrives will entice many of the larger super powers. They will want to cut a deal so when the world is converted they remain in a controlling position.

Even if we eventually turn on them and murder them off with several airstrikes the world will never forget.

There is a bigger universe out there. There are dangers. Joining the Imperium will open up a new world of exploration and advancement. Plus the offer of the living embodiment of God at their head.

I say 10 years for the revolution to take place or the larger smarter countries to fold. Be as stubborn as we want. If the astartes threaten annihilation by orbital bombardment by space assets we're going to listening hard before answering.

As far as mass-military tech is concerned I'd be shocked if modern weaponry wasn't IG-tier as far as results. The advantage of a Lasgun over an assault rifle is that if the two are equally maintained the Lasgun does not jam as frequently (ever?) and doesn't have to be reloaded. It's a logistics improvement, not a firepower one.

    a) an isolated squad, not a chapter

    b) xenos pretty much suck at war. all of their tanks have armor protection that is <300 mm, which puts them on par with 1950's shit. Eldar firearms have a lower effective range than modern small arms, and their standard body armor can't protect against water-tipped bullets. Tau soldiers are trained almost exclusively in ranged combat, are assisted by targeting shit in their helmits, and still cant shoot better than a trained human soldier. . Necrons are buggy, a group is used by some backwater world's PDF as target practice due to some error. They would still be a credible threat, but i just can see modern militaries getting roflstomped by a a race that pretty much finished technology, but can still be torn apart by converted tractors.
Really chaos, orks and nids are the only ones that would outright fuck us, because of corruption, spores, and biomass harvesting respectively.

40k weapons aren't all that overpowered. As was stated above the toughness of creatures and effectiveness of armor makes the weapons look bad.

I will however say the range on all 40k weapons besides maybe Tau is god awful. But then again the game wouldn't be fun if engagements took place from 400 yards like they do in today's combat.

so can most modern firearms. Except at greater effective ranges. Also, our firearms can punch through flak as well

Reason for lasgun popularity is rugged and simple construction, ease of maintenance, and most important, ease of replenishing ammo. I'd bet if it weren't for that last bit, autoguns would be the mainstay of IG armies.

I always assumed that humanity had the same mass psychic effect that Orks did. In fact they have to since the only thing really keeping the Imperium afloat is humanity's mass belief in their Emperor, and in turn, humanity.

Should the Emperor ever die the Imperium would likely fall overnight as all that feelgood worship converts directly into intangible chaos despair.

Wouldn't have a chance. The first stage would be despair at the loss of the Emperor, and that despair would be sparked instantly throughout the galaxy with the loss of the Astronomican and the failing of Emperor-directed divinations, etc.
Barring Starchild/Sensei/Illuminati-type scenarios, this means that even if Humanity could have theoretically worked its way out of the "superficial" implications of the instant loss of what they'd believed to be their only hope (y'know, grimdark civil war of unprecedented proportions), the truly meaningful implications of such emotions in the WH40K universe are the bolstering effects this all has on the Warp, its entities and CHaos cults. Also, the Golden Throne being left unguarded means another Warp-Realspace overlap forming instantly in the former Imperium's hugely powerful capitol. Ah, and lets not mention the Void Dragon next door.
So, thirty seconds pass: who's left to regain and reenforce their resolve?
