Do you have any idea how much money I would pay for a "fish out of water" game involving the crew of a tank or boat stranded in some high fantasy setting? Negotiating with locals for food, assaulting a port to steal coal, shooting down a dragon and selling his hoard to hire a blacksmith to make shell casings? Yeah, you have a rifle against their arrows, but you only have 3 clips left, and you still need to break into the Wizard of Ugthep's tower to see if he has some kind of dimensional portal magic. Soo much money.

If you like animu, look up "Those who hunt elves". It's EXACTLY that, 3 random realworld people dumped in a high fantasy setting with a tank. Then turns into softcore porn because spell fragments scatter across the world onto the skin of female elves that they have to find.

    Hell yeahhh. Here's a scenario:
In the midst of the chaos that follows the D-Day Normandy landings, nobody barely noticed a single Tiger tank missing, along with its crew. It seems that an interdimensional portal has flung them into a nearby timeline, one where dragons exist and magic works. Can they survive, and return to their own timeline? Or will they try and carve themselves a niche in that universe, eventually becoming known as the 'three-headed iron beast of Garmdor?'

Okay, totally not trying to shit on your parade. I like the idea, I like it a lot. It's a FUN idea. But this is not something you can play straight.

The problem inherent isn't running out of ammo, it's the million other things that can go wrong. You're out of fuel, you slip a gear and break the transmission, you have an electrical failure... Great, now you have a tank/PT boat which is mechanically disabled and no way to make repairs. You COULD hand-wave that one of your dudes is a mechanical engineering prodigy, who remembers the exact size and specific dimensions of every part on the equipment because that's how they roll, but the point is you can't REALLY play this TOO straight. Which sorta eases the tension, which sorta makes the fish out of water thing less a problem.

And on the note of ammunition, modern ammunition is not a simple affair. Yeah, with the right tools and equipment backwater hicks can reload their shell casings, but they need powder, primer caps, bullets... This all requires a certain level of quality as well otherwise you can have a serious malfunction of equipment that at best requires a serious dismantling and cleaning of the equipment and at worst destroys the equipment and maybe takes someone's hand and face with it.

Once more, I'm encouraging you in that this is a fun idea, but just understand everything that goes with it. Some of this stuff could likely be BS'd by teaming up with wizards and alchemists, but ultimately you're still dealing with very complicated modern machinery in a world where such engineering concepts are as foreign as the world is to these people transported there.
    >> Anonymous 10/02/11(Sun)01:51 No.16491576
OP, I'd say use the equipment from d20 Modern (or d20 Past, I believe that covers WW2) but just use a different d20 system if that was your goal. You could even have the players just be fighters or rogues (or Barbarian or magic-less Ranger) to represent them coming from an entirely magic-less society.

I used the equipment from d20 Modern for a game I ran recently with the classic "fantasy characters in modern times cliche." It has been working excellently. I only use d20 Modern for equipment and rules.

It is true that a lot of it would be irreplaceable, but there are always alternatives. The ship is reconnaissance, designed to be out in the field, so it carries replacements for parts that commonly break. One of the guys is a hobbyist, and helps a blacksmith make a lathe, which makes a better lathe... Then when you introduce the fantasy side of things, you have even more options. Yeah, you are out of coal, but you hire a wizard to lock a fire elemental in your boiler. Your screws break, and you lash your boat to the back of a leviathan, who you control through magical rods inserted straight into his brain. You can't make gunpowder, but the cannons are high enough quality that a wizard can open a portal to the elemental plane of fire in them without them melting.

Could ease this idea into a fantasy setting. Have ancient vehicles, possibly futuristic (if you are playing Warhammer Fantasy RP you could write it off as 40k tech) and very poorly describe the vehicle to prevent meta-guessing of what it is. So yeah, you'd end up with a weird looking shelter that hold some ancient "magical" device that makes light. Or something.

that would require one to have completely no understanding of the concept of technology. Rogues make use of mechanical devices constantly. I imagine people have simple tools as well. A wizard would look at it and deduce that it doesn't work like his magic, so it's probably not magical in the sense that he knows it.

I'd say such a campaign would have to occur in phases....

Phase 1: Acquire self sufficiency. Make it clear to the PCs that if they don't get their shit in order fast they will easily run out of the supplies they start with.

Phase 2: Upgrade/Make more connections. Sure you may have figured a way to drive that thing around and jury rig up some ammo for the rifles. But the main gun still only has so many shells left and one busted tread will put you out of commission. Time to expand the operation.

Phase 3: Take on dragons. Win. Repeat.

I see a few ways to start with this in mind.
-A tank and relatively little in the way of supplies appear alongside the players in an area easily exploitable. Imagine they got homed in on a Wizard's tower. If they make friends with the Wizard and allies with the orc quarry a few miles that a way maybe they'd have an easy time keeping up with the basics.

-Have an entire damn motorpool teleported. Suddenly things are a lot easier to deal with when modern day equipment also shows up to use for maintenance.

....To sum it up I think either the upkeep for the basics needs to either be available rather quickly or come with you for this kind of game to work.
    >> Anonymous 10/02/11(Sun)03:03 No.16492114
I would totally GM a PT boat in DnD. Just some rough ideas to follow.

Intro: A pacifistic Japanese holy man is serving at a base in Japan. He blesses a torpedo, praying that those who were hit by it were instead taken far away from this time of war and modernity.

Act I: The PCs are the crew of a PT boat at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attack, airplanes outta nowhere, fire and bombs and screams. They take their boat for a spin and learn its capabilities. After they shoot down one plane, the torpedo of fate lines up.

They are hit by the blessed torpedo. Big explosion, sustain damage to the hull, big hole on the port side. In the blink of an eye, the party is transported to the open sea. Weird but they have to stop themselves from sinking before they take stock of their situation.

In the distance, land. They won't make it far without repairs, the pumps are overloaded as is. They need to find a friendly port and at least get it seaworthy again.

Towards land they go, the diesel engine put-putting along. They arrive in what seems to be a mundane fishing village. Everything low tech, everyone tanned, speaking an odd language. The PCs probably assume they are somewhere in the South Pacific.
    >> Anonymous 10/02/11(Sun)03:03 No.16492119
    >>16492114

    Act II:

The PCs will do their best to fix the ship but it won't be enough. They will have to go to a bigger city. Through grunts and gestures, the locals point them towards the rising sun.

That's when they start to see odd things. Not whales in the water, something bigger. Not birds in the sky, something larger. Here's the first encounter with a magical beastie, something mid-level.

The pumps that were damaged are now shot, they need to pull into another island and make repairs. Cannibalistic elves who cast spells of seduction to lure the crew to stay there? I think so. But not over the top clouds of blue smoke, thundering voices "I AM CASTING A SPELL ON YOU!" Subtle, ethereal glammors at the edges of their vision, things changing when they look away. Paranoia influenced.

    Act III:

After the elves, on the crew ventures, perhaps with some lewt from the elves. Something to repair their hull, at least marginally? Something for fuel? They, after all, have only a range of 600 miles before being dead in the water.

They reach a city of moderate size. Fantasy elements abound. From there, play it by ear.

    THE SHIP:
    - Officially named PT-52 by the US Navy.
    - 80 feet of steel, with 3 Packard 1,200-hp engines. Top speed about 40 knots. Enough fuel for 600 miles, if you aren't going fast.
    - Twin M2 .50 cal machineguns on a rotating ring in the stern. 5000 rounds of ammo
    - A 5-inch gun on the bow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q0G_Sz2YZU for a demonstration). 50 rounds of ammo. No, it's not historically accurate because these weren't mounted on PT boats until later in the war, but whatever.
    - 4 depth charges
    - A small arms locker with two thompson submachine guns, two 12-gauge shotguns, and 4 browning pistols. Not much ammo for each.
    - A weeks supply of food.

I agree with the phases idea.

Phase 1) Get a handle on where you are, what's going on, learn languages, try not to get killed.
Phase 2) Make your ship at least somewhat self-sufficient. Add sails if needed, retool that bitch to run on steam-power. Perhaps Eberron to make it more tech-friendly?
    Phase 3) Acquire profit.
Phase 4) Rule the high seas in your >>16491784
    >>16491711.
Phase 5) Return to WWII with a fleet of your own making from the DnD alt-universe?

The ideas for sessions abound. I was kinda thinking that the first two phases should play out like The Odyssey. Phase 3 and 4 are more swashbuckling (think if Pirates of the Caribbean had a lovechild with Waterworld whose offspring then had a kid with Full Metal Jacket). Phase 5 is just zaniness.

I for one would use realistic fire arm rules....then run it very straight and with a lot of inspiration from supernatural settings. Imagine..hmm wait let me paint a better picture.

Imagine the PCs just got ashore. They got the supplies as detailed by >>16492127 on them. Which means they can easily carry everything but it isn't much in the long run.

The PCs are paranoid as hell right now and slowly advancing through the jungle. Suddenly Dire Ape. Fuckers huge but familiar. They drop it with one round of fire...one round of fire equates to a decent amount of ammo consumption. PCs likely too spooked to know any better. Looking over the corpse they know something is off. Apes don't get that big.

Maybe now they start regretting using up that ammo. Or maybe when an Ogre wanders out of it's cave to investigate the weird sounds, crashes through a few trees, and almost pulps someone before going down....

Make the guns POWERFUL. Make the depth charges POWERFUL. But they only start with so many and if the players don't get supply trains going they'll burn through it really quick. Have the creatures around them react realistically.

The game should go from almost a survival game with lessons from horror into pure awesome if the players earn it. (Quite frankly as a GM being able to tell your players how they blew apart a leviathan should be a reward for YOU as well.)

I'd....I'd kind of want to try to use Riddle of Steel with scratch built modern fire arms rules...Which'd basically come down to winning most fights by shooting things before they get close enough to use combat dice.

I wouldn't think D20 would be great for this. I'd rather see Unisystem or something else that's simple...and a lot of GM jurry rigging to make things feel right. Hell Dark Heresies system sounds like it'd work. (Fuck you get shifted to a feral world? Or WFRP? Sure why not)

Also has rules for APCs, if I recall correctly. Some quick GM jurymandering can manipulate that into a tank. One could make the argument that a modern APC is about equal(ish) to a WWII tank, but I digress.

Well, there are tons of rules for making zombies. I suppose that would translate into making fantasy creatures. One would need to plot out which ones you're going to see in a particular session before you see them, but I suppose you could be off the cuff if something shows weird. I fly by the seat of my pants alot when I GM.

OP's picture bothers me... mail throwing... it's just wrong. No way her hand should be that low after a throw that high, she'd have whipped it into the side of the ship. Which probably would have been a better throw than the one that's going to send both crew members into the water...

Just what kind of army courier is she! She should be shot...

Beautifully rendered, deadly in purpose, and incredible in devastation, it was with a hushed breath the world waited, all was silent, and then a roar of force that the two Locate-City-Nukes went off in a beautiful display of flame and force.

They went off, but did not explodes in fire and death and localized waves of undeniable force. They went off, but did not kill those who had come to disarm it.

No, killing would have not been a fitting end to those heroes who had risked so much to save a nation, to save a belief, to save the world from all who would see it burn, turned to their own ends without a thought to any crushed in their path.

No. A group of heroes stopped it - soldiers of the highest order - the elite guard who went where others feared, and used their skills in ways that challenged all belief of possible.

    Rangers.

Rangers, who lay in a field, under a strange sky, and tried to make sense of where they were. The wind was odd and it was much too cold for this time of year - and the fortress was missing, from where they had stood and looked upon an old stone place loaded with the most dangerously potent choice of weapons in this modern era.

    "Lamirez, you copy?"

A grunt, undignified, replied from a tangled heap of scale, coil, hide and hair, a creature bruised and battered and dizzy from a sudden rush of power and force. Her head lifted, golden-green eyes squinting, and one forced closed with unflattering bruising around the wide pupil. She grunted again and sat up - her armor battered, and her rifle strewn a few feet away from her.

Day 15 - I would give more details about where we are, but we haven't a fucking clue. Just the same blue ocean. Apparently civilization is this way, somewhere. Then again, Jenkins is the only one of us who speaks another language, and its French. What if they were pointing us the wrong direction? What if they said, "That way is certain death, make sure NOT to go that way?" I know I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Hopkins for one. He doesn't say anything. He doesn't have to. Just smokes in his hammock and stares at the bulkhead. But I can tell.

Day 17 - McKinley shot some kinda fish. It looks like a red-striped dolphin with really sharp teeth. None of us have seen anything like it. Tastes like mackerel.

Day 23 - Running out of fresh water. The CO is trying to rig up some kinda purifier that turns sea water into something potable, use that Yale education. Here's hoping he knows what he's doing. In the old days, when sailors were adrift without food and water, they would draw straws, murder the unfortunate bastard with the short one, then drink his blood and eat his flesh. Hope we don't get to that point. Hope I don't draw the short straw.

Day 24 - The purifier is working. Good thing, too. Hopkins was looking at me funny.

Day 28 - Have to stop for provisions. This island doesn't look sinister but I still don't look forward to it. Last time we stopped, we lost Galloway. My shotgun is down to 4 shells. Hope I make it back.

"Good, you are up. Anyone know where we are? Where's the Fortress? Where's the helos?"

It was quiet, but for wind, and the sound of thunder in the distance. A butterfly fluttered up from the long grass and landed on a serpentine nose, before the Lamia swatted it away and grunted, feeling a large wind brush on her. It was chilly. Thankfully, the inter-woven amulets would keep her warm. Rangers only got the best, in theory.

"Somethings wrong with the stars. I can't find the Eye of Broketail anywhere." Thompson sat up, looking away from the sky and the distant moons, then back to his C/O who fiddled with his radio, attempting to contact headquarters.

    "No idea, damn wizards."

Lamirez stared out with her 'nocs, the tri-eyed scopes settling in, giving a reading in heat signatures and in magical radiation - one more familiar for the lamia, the other a useful tool in some situations. The scopes zoomed in on the horizon, where a strange sight caught her attention. She sat up, wincing at a wrenched disk, and forced herself to stare out.

"Centaurs." She murmured into her transmitter. "Armed with swords. Heading our way. 1500 meters."

"Damn. Take perimeter, but don't fire unless they take hostile action." The squad assembled, ignoring their injuries to take up a firing line. Lamirez dropped her rifle and slithered prone, to take bead.

"They are in mail, sir. Light magical properties." She hissed, and clenched at her 'tags around her throat. She murmured a prayer for guidance, and waited for contact...

"Come in, come in. This is K-080-LD Crew. Anyone there, respond?" It was a small crackling, the distance would be vast, but there. Heard over the heavy wind and the thunder of approaching hooves, it buzzed the ear of Lamirez and the rest of the Ranger Squad.

"This is Ranger Squad 6, Identification 0f-1d-1a-1n, we are at an unknown site. We are being approached by Centaurs, and they are armed. Backup would be appreciated if you would be so inclined. We will flare, now."

And with a word, Rodriguez raised a small tube from his pouch and aimed it skyward - and murmured 'Mandlik', setting off the flare to explode into the sky. That would give the tank crew a chance to find them. It was friendly, they had been a help during a mission not a few hours ago.

The Centaurs raced closer on the flare of magic. But so did a great metal beast from behind the squad, with its great neck stretched and mouth open, preparing to launch death with but a word. A kobold sat on top of it with binoculars to his eyes, while painted along the side was a lurid image of a dragon in flight. Scrawled along the side was a rather rude message in draconic. Forged of adamantine and the finest of magitechnology, the tanks of the Kobold Engineer Corps were the most dangerous on the field.

If small and cramped for the average sized person.

    "Copy."

The Centaurs slowed, and a rather large one stepped forward, his sword lowered to rest against the earth, and a heavy spear to his back, set to charge if he needed to. It crackled with crude energy, a weak spell of power placed into it.

"Wer bist Sie? Sie übertreten am Bundesland über König Heinrich die Fünft-! Identifizieren sich oder auch sein getötet!" He spoke, his dark lips moving quickly. Brows furrowed.

    "What language is that?"

"German, sir. Er, sounds like it. It's not quite, uh, I am not sure." Rodriguez said, while squinting at the centaur. He rubbed the back of his head, the gnoll feeling itchy, but thankful for the warm fur that kept out the chill. The moons were on the wane.

"Sprichst Deutsch?" He tried. Heads tilted amongst the centaurs, before shaking at the obvious question. "Vos agnosco mihi?"

The centaurs paced, blades ready, while rifles remained down - ready to snap a shot off in an instant if they made a hostile gesture. The rumble of the tank became audible, over a hill in the distance.

Blades were raised, and words were shouted again, in the odd germanic tongue. Battle was to be joined, with these alien invaders, possibly barbaric Slavs or Poles. The lead Centaur snorted. He hated Slavs, and Poles, and Lithuanians.

And then the Tank breached the distance like the roar of an angry dragon, and the kobold-crewed vehicle thundered forward, to the relief of the Rangers, and fear of the Knights, who turned, and charged away.

No one wished to deal with a metal-covered war-golem! They had to alert the lord and the courts! War was coming!

"Just in time." Lamirez murmured, clicking the safety and checking the magazine before shouldering her great rifle. "Just in time."

I dunno. I just wrote until it felt like a good stopping point. Plus, being Rangers, they do have some magical items. Not unlikely that they can form ammunition via magic. Or even make their own rifles, with access to the right materials. Gunpowder is very easy to make, as well as rifling. Having engineers in the tank (adamantium tank?) would help.

Until they run out of fuel and have to get more McGuffin.

OP in order for your idea to work you would need a ship, and a decently large one. You would need a decent amount of NPCs who you could cram full of requisite skills and knowledge to handle all the shit that could go wrong with the technology to free up the players to actually play. Secondly you need a large amount of cargo for ammo, spare parts, etc...

If your a trek fan remember back to Voyager. That ship was the perfect size for a "fish out of water" story because it was large enough to be semi-self sustainable.

While it may seem cool to have just 1 tank and its crew transported to a high-fantasy setting, if they are there for more than a few days it won't work. Tanks run out of fuel hella fast. Also tanks are designed to fight other vehicles, they are not good at hitting horsemen, infantry, dragons, etc...

The only fish out of water story I ever did was using D&D 3.5 Eberron. I had an airship from 200 years in Eberron's future brought back to the present somehow and the players used it to try to survive a horrible shit-fest of a war in which they were always being hunted, and beaten on.

If you guys have seen Waterworld that is a good example of what happens when you put modern technology in a fantasy environment.

Long story short, most people used sails because gas was non-existent. Those who had gas used it to acquire other resources through powering armed boats and transporting troops. They didn't even use gas for transport. They had the Exxon Valdez and they rowed the damn thing.

    > You can't just get blacksmiths to make new ammo, you need industry for it

You can, it will be produced in homeopathic amounts, and shitty as fuck. Keep it for rainy days, and use scorpions with molotov cocktails/naphta for most enemies and you're set. Also...if you're not signing up for a deal with one of the lords that has access to unrefined oil, and bootstrapping him to XIX levels you're doing it fucking wrong you idiot.
Also, check the series Destroyermen, it's about...well, one old destroyer being thrown to alternative earth, where extinction never happened, and land is ruled by raptor-like intelligent reptiles, while the only sentinent mammals are descendants of madagascaran lemures, who constantly flee the raptors and live on giant wooden ship-platforms. Ooh, me likey.

I had a story idea based on a similar idea in my head for a while but I never get that far with it though. (Like most of my ideas.)
In my case it was a group of Army soldiers and one or two vehicles that got magically transported over to some fantasy land.
While the idea of an Abrams versus Orcs or Dragons was cool I just sorta settled for a Stryker as the main vehicle. I do admit I have a liking for that vehicle. And then possibly a supply truck to somewhat handwave away the whole ammo and supply issue for a while as well just saying something with the teleportation caused the engines to never run out of fuel.

    >>16493356
Well the best idea for that would almost be a Destroyer or a Destroyer Escort. Because using a cruiser or something bigger might be a bit too much size and crew wise but a DD or the older DE type are almost perfectly sized with not too many crewmembers.
